Hi - I am 11 years old and I am in School of Rock the Musical on Broadway and you are my inspiration. I just did this song as my first Rush bass cover and I learned it by watching your video over and over and over and over again. I hope you will watch it. I love your videos so much.
Hi Ellie. Thanks so much for your wonderful comment, it really made my day! I watched your video and loved it, I think you did a fantastic job...and on a full scale bass no less! I showed my wife (Lynn) the video and that was the first thing she remarked on, "Look at the size of that bass!" And, of course, how well you played that difficult song. Anyway, I have a birthday coming up and Lynn thinks we should go and see you perform as a part of the celebration. Will you be in the September 16th, 2:00pm performance?
TJH3113 Thank you so much for watching!! It means so much to me (you don't even know)! And I am so happy you want to come see the show!! I am a Swing in the show which means I cover 7 parts (including the bass player) but I am not on for every show. I go on last minute a lot and I also get some scheduled performances when others go on vacation. But I don't have any that I know of right now. You can still come on 9/16 even though I might not be on (I am still at the theater for every show) or I can let you know the next time I am on!! (My mom is so excited to meet you too - she is a big Rush fan.) 😀😀😀
OK, I just bought our tickets for Saturday, Sept. 16th - Center Orchestra, Row K, Seats 117/116, 2:00 show. We'll be coming down early and going to the Bass Lounge at Sam Ash so I can play a Sadowsky or two before the show (it's my birthday, you know)...shhhhhh. If your schedule allows, maybe we could meet there or anywhere else at you and your Mom's convenience, after all, you'll be on "on the clock" that day, haha. I'm going to send you a message containing my Wife's phone # so your Mom can call or text her. I think that's the most appropriate thing to do. Her name is Lynn and she's very nice. Much, much nicer than me. Look forward to seeing you perform or just meeting you and your Mom, or possibly both!
I love your note lengths... the way you deliberately place short vs. long notes is so cool. Musician at work! And how well you're able to lock into their timing in the rather free parts is amazing. So fun to listen to... oh and did I mention the killer tone? What can I say, it's just how it should be done. Pure Pleasure.
When you watch something like this, you start to appreciate that while you’ve been hearing, Troy has been listening. There’s SO much more to this than most of us thought!!
Some of the albums of this time frame I just go back and listen and am blown away. This album, Moving Pictures and Number of the Beast by Maiden... Just amazing.
Whenever I listen to Rush specifically Spirit of Radio. I listen to this That is playing !! Excellent perfect timing !! You play and phrase every note so perfectly and you play it with such ease. I am going to listen to it again , Thanks Troy ! Peace.
Beautiful. I've been playing along with this whole album for thirty years, but I've never worked through all the little ornamentation that makes this track so special and tasty. I never noticed the chords in the second chorus(verse?)! Thanks for this, warts and all.
Another great song - thanks! I watched it first on RUclips on my Roku so I had to get to my computer to leave this comment. I see that there are many positive comments about the Guild, and I agree with you and them. Thanks again!
Very Cool.. I started going to concerts the same year, I was a freshman in high school and my sister was a huge concert goer. I just grabbed onto her coat tail and away we went. Those were some great times..... festival seating.. $20/30.00 bucks for a ticket. I miss those day's. Cheers.
Can't believe that song is 37 years old. I was expecting something today from you , haha , nice cover . Great Album , it set up Moving Pictures success
I re-watched it and found the F-bomb and then you cracked a smile. Too funny! Still the note didn't stick out to me. Maybe I'm just not that quick. But, Valerie is a stickler for finding stuff that I never detect. I'll have to ask Her. Just kidding.....
Been watching you for years man, very sad hearing about Neil. You got me floored 20 seconds in. Gonna use this to help me figure the song out. Thanks for doing what you do, keep up the incredible work.
Has Geddy Lee ever weighed in on your excellent renditions of his playing? I"m quite impressed with your work and always look forward to anything new you post.
@@sharonlee4773 Why do you think that? Troy is really good but I don't think he would say that he is better than Geddy or anyone else for that matter.. Plus what is "better"? It is subjective.
up to 17 secs in and chops at 3:35 - always, ALWAYS so hard to nail that (with my band in the 80s anyway- probably for ANY). You seemed to do it really tight/clean, tho TJH! One of my most cherished nostalgia/childhood tunes, fo' sure sure.
I never get tired of watching you *enjoy* playing. Thanks for posting. Btw, I asked a long time back, but I'll ask again - would you be willing to cover Yes' cover of America (Simon and Garfunkel). Thanks for considering.
Rush used Spirit of Radio as their opening song for many years during their tours in the 1980s. I think they started using a different opening song on the Hold Your Fire tour. Was the song Big Money???... Thanks for another great bass cover!
Hi Troy- Is there any chance you could explain why you've characterised the thumb-rest you got from Zero-Mod as a "Near-Zero-Mod" mod? Did you need to drill an additional hole or holes to install it? Inspired in large part by your stellar playing on your B-301, I just purchased a 1976 B-301 of my own this past week, and can already see how a thumb-rest might be a good thing to have on this instrument. And thanks, as always, for investing the time, energy and effort that you do to share your wonderful playing and insights with the rest of us!
It was perfect in my book. I would have never noticed the hiccup except that your body language pointed it out. I do the same thing. It's something I need to eliminate. Great job.
Great work! I've been watching your vids for a couple years now, and I still expect one of those masks to start moving or singing or something, one day :)
I wouldn't see a problem with using all three, but let your ear be the deciding vote and then go back and repair the TAB/sheet music. I'm not sure if we've had this discussion before, but a TAB or transcription is only as good as the pair of ears that transcribed them. We're closing on on the completion of that Kansas/Leftoverture project and we've really put a lot of workin to making the transcriptions as accurate as we possible can. I'm going to talk to Tim about maybe doing a Rush song when we're done. I'll take a poll to see what song people would most like to see TAB'd/transcribed.
Unreal sound and fluidity. Don't know if you still take requests but I'd love to see the ESL version of Xanadu!!! Thanks for these amazing videos and note for note precision!
I have to do more RUSH videos. Because I’ve been Playing & Singing them in 1980. Way Before the masses who play but don’t Sing & Play them. We’ve got to promote. Not just playing an instrument. But Playing & Singing while playing the instrument. It’s becoming a lost Art!

That part at 0:05-0:20 where the rhythm section "gears up" is such a cool effect, but lining up the bass and the drums to do it has got to be damn near impossible.

Thanks for the kind words. Note length is something that does not get talked about much, but which is very important. Thanks again.
3:41 wow you are human lol great video
This is a really hard song timing wise for bass.
Haha, yes, I am all too human.
Thanks.

Nearly flawless! Of course without having to play pedals, keys and singing all at the same time!
Imagine that? Eesh!
One of the best opening guitar 🎸 riffs ever!!!!
Truth.
Definitely
Amazing as usual!! Permanent Waves is truly an incredible album.
Thanks.
Beginning of that bridge was sick. Holy moly.
Awesome job! You even had that "twang" that's characteristic of Geddy Lee. Really enjoyed this video!
Impeccable. You are tremendously gifted my friend. I am soulfully inspired by you. Keep them video covers coming Troy
Thank you very much for the kind words.
Thank's TJ. I miss the sound of Permanent Waves. It was smashing my head for a long time. Fresh air!!!

Nice. That Guild is very cool, too.
Thanks. I really dig the Guild.
Sounds pretty badass indeed!
Some of the albums of this time frame I just go back and listen and am blown away. This album, Moving Pictures and Number of the Beast by Maiden... Just amazing.
I agree. They really knew how to write and record back then, didn't they?
Amazing.. sound, tempo... everything. I applaud you Sir.

Thanks so much. Geddy definitely modified the way he played this one live over the years. I much prefer this way.

Nice job Troy !!! Loved it all...especially 3:35-3:39, which is no easy task lol.
Thanks! 👍
Fantastic! I'm not quite sure what was wrong with that note, but you sure let us know how you felt about it. You rush covers amaze me.
Damn dude you're really good! This song can't be easy to play. Awesome song, great job 👍
Thanks a lot.
Nice!! Love the Guild. For some reason, my favorite part of this song from a bass player's perspective is 3:49. Great cover.
Thanks. Me too.

Yeah, that's something, isn't it? I wasn't going to post anything but couldn't pass up the anniversary.
Thanks a lot.
Watched again Troy. Always nice to see you smile as well. Hard to find great music to make us smile now a days brother✌👊😎
Thanks so much, Don.
Like every new year, I play on YT your version first. Happy 2021 Troy. A big Hug from the far side of the world 🇦🇷
Thanks so much Sergio!
the tone of your bass is spot on, sounds really nice
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks.
Simply amazing! I can't get enough of listening to this bass cover! Rock on, man!!!
Thanks a lot.
as usual, brilliant thank you troy. i wish you lived over here in blighty, me and me mates would love to see you and yours doing a rush set live👍👍👍😊
Thanks so much! Unfortunately, I have no "yours".
I’m constantly amazed that Geddy Lee can play complicated bass lines and sing at the same time.
Me too!
Thank you!!! Enjoy what you do....
Thank you very much.
Better than the original version, Or equal, but never below, as always, The tone of the bass is incredibly the same, great great job Mr. Troy!!
Hey! Thanks a lot. I hope you are well.
Incredible!! Thanks for sharing
Thanks!
Quality as ever. Brilliant.
Thank you.
I was unable to detect the one big note you were referring to. I say well done!
If you find the F-bomb, you'll find the big note. Thanks Steph.

Guild B301, such a fabulous instrument
Truth! They are among my favorite basses.
First song I ever learned on a drum set. 1980 RUSH ON TROY !!!! Hard not to feel that one. thanks,,,,,,.......
Very cool! Thanks Don!
Yay!!! Nice to see you again, my friend! Great job!
Thank you.
Spot on!
Been watching you for years man, very sad hearing about Neil. You got me floored 20 seconds in. Gonna use this to help me figure the song out. Thanks for doing what you do, keep up the incredible work.
Yes, very sad about Neil, isn't it? Awesome! I hope it helps!
No need to thank me, it's my pleasure.
That sounds pretty damn perfect to me.

They've linked to his videos at the RUSH website. So they maybe aware...

Who cares if its not exactly like GEDDY did... It was great....no one here could say that they didn't recognize it..
Good job my friend. 2 THUMBS up.
Thanks.
You said f*ck.
I LOL'd.
Now I see your Human! Great Cover as always!
Haha... you saw that? Thanks.
this bass is amazing, such great tone! great video as always
Can never get over how awesome that Guild sounds. Somewhere between a P-Bass and a Rick. Sounds great. Good playing as well
Yes, that's exactly how I describe the sound and it really suits my taste. Thanks.
yeah, i can see how. it's kind of a dream bass for me as well. but yeah, welcome
Amazing you emulated Geddy's Sound perfectly on that Old Guild Bass!
I'm glad you liked it
You are an incredibly talented bass player. Which I don't think will come as a surprise to you. Greetings from Sweden!!
Thank you very much Peter. That was very kind of you to say.
Superb cover, absolutely brilliant. Rush are a truly special band. ✌️
Thank you very much! Couldn't agree more!
Saying this once more. Vapor Trails covers will be a great way for you to complete your "Great Work" in this life.

Love the album but then again I love them all and am hard pressed to name my favorite Rush album.

Thanks so much, Caio, I appreciate it!
