When I was 15, I would play this LP before going to school. This is one of those big songs that is absolutely timeless. That everything comes together and makes happiness.
Best song during the first year of college. I was 19 years old when I first heard the promo over the radio in December 1979, then suddenly I heard the full release of the song and have been listening to it since then. Rush were great in the long run. Neil Peart is still rocking alive in heaven.
And such a perfect concert opener. The house lights go off, the crowd roars, the "Three Stooges" theme plays, Alex launches those sixteenth notes out into the still-darkened auditorium, and THEN...the stage lights blaze on with that first big downbeat. Flawless.

"We should play Spirit of the Radio!" said the guitarist in my band last week (we have less than two weeks left before the gig we're playing at, only two practices in that time, and we're all 15-17 years old)
Many rock lyrics are incomprehensible, but Geddy Lee's singing is as easy to understand as reading aloud. It's probably because Rush cares about the content of the lyrics.
My all - time favorite band period!! I cry everytime I hear a RUSH tune knowing that The Professor Neil Peart is no longer with us.😢🙏 He is in heaven playing in that great concert in the sky with Johnny Cash, Jimi, Jim Morrison, Dave Bowie, Lennon, Buddy Holly, George Harrison, Joe Strummer and every one else. He was a very intelligent person as well as an extraordinary drummer. Many of the lyrics he wrote were based on works by writers such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dorothy Parker, John Dos Passos and my All - Time favorite writer and the basis for Neil's lyrics Ayn Rand. By the way read The Fountainhead. This book 's theme is the basis for much of RUSH's music.
God, I just remember was on 1980 or 81 when I first hear this album, a young 17 Y/O guy discovering a whole new world in music by 3 incredible musicians.
I was skipping school with some friends to go listen to some albums at a friends house. We were walking down the road when a mustang fastback passed by with the stereo blasting this song. I was in 10th grade or so. This song and album changed our generation and everything else became irrelevant. History was redefined in the blink of an eye.
Begin the day with a friendly voice A companion unobtrusive Plays that song that's so elusive And the magic music makes your morning mood Off on your way, hit the open road There is magic at your fingers For the spirit ever lingers Undemanding contact in your happy solitude Invisible airwaves crackle with life Bright antennae bristle with the energy Emotional feedback on a timeless wavelength Bearing a gift beyond price, almost free All this machinery making modern music Can still be open-hearted Not so coldly charted It's really just a question of your honesty Yeah, your honesty One likes to believe in the freedom of music But glittering prizes And endless compromises Shatter the illusion of integrity, yeah Invisible airwaves crackle with life Bright antennae bristle with the energy Emotional feedback on a timeless wavelength Bearing a gift beyond price, almost free For the words of the profits Were written on the studio wall Concert hall And echoes with the sound Of salesmen Of salesmen Of salesmen!
It’s not from an old poem. It’s a nod to the final lines of the Simon & Garfunkel song “The Sounds of Silence”: “The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls / And tenement halls / And whispered in the sounds of silence.” That song was released in the late 1960s, and was included on the soundtrack of (as well as a very pivotal scene in) “The Graduate”. It is pretty genius how they (Or maybe Neil? He was Rush’s primary lyricist) adapted those lines into a commentary on commercialism in music. And they set those lines to sort of a reggae/ska rhythm that’s completely different from the rest of the song. (Edited to correct the lyrics I was referring to.)

Begin the day with a friendly voice
A companion unobtrusive
Plays that song that's so elusive
And the magic music makes your morning mood
Off on your way, hit the open road
There is magic at your fingers
For the spirit ever lingers
Undemanding contact in your happy solitude
Invisible airwaves crackle with life
Bright antennae bristle with the energy
Emotional feedback on a timeless wavelength
Bearing a gift beyond price, almost free
All this machinery making modern music
Can still be open-hearted
Not so coldly charted
It's really just a question of your honesty
Yeah, your honesty
One likes to believe in the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless compromises
Shatter the illusion of integrity, yeah
Invisible airwaves crackle with life
Bright antennae bristle with the energy
Emotional feedback on a timeless wavelength
Bearing a gift beyond price, almost free
For the words of the profits
Were written on the studio wall
Concert hall
And echoes with the sound
Of salesmen
Of salesmen
Of salesmen!
