The clarinetist's name is Michele Zukovsky. She has been principal clarinetist with the LA Philharmonic for a very long time, and is world famous among symphony musicians.
this makes the story complete. In the 1920's wrote Gershwin this piece, inspired by jazz and blues. Here we have a perfoemance by one of the greatest pianist in the history of jazz!
When a piece has been performed this many times…by so many different, world-class musicians…and been ruthlessly exploited in movies, television and, indeed, commercials…then as much as you may love the piece, it is difficult not to think of it as a “war horse”. It becomes hard to get excited about seeing yet another performer simply give the piece lots of respect, technical excellence, and energy. All good things, of course but at this point maybe not enough to inspire making the trip to the concert hall. I have been to many concerts conducted by Dudamel and have likewise seen Hancock in concert a few times. But man, am I ever sorry I was not at Disney Hall for this performance! Herbie’s phrasing and dynamics gave such a wonderful new life and breathing space to the much-loved old war horse. I hope Gershwin, wherever he is, got to hear this and give the (now seemingly) stodgy, original reading by Paul Whiteman’s Orchestra a rest. So great to see Dudamel spying on Herbie during the performance, able only to smile at what Herbie was doing and shake his head in admiration, which I’m sure was also a treat for the LAPhil’s musicians.
Grandeeeeeeeeeeeeee !!!!!!
The master at work!!☝️11:58 that back beat I've never hear it played like that , but it was perfect. Only a master jazz pianist would know to put that groove in there like that. Thanks Herbie.🔥
RHAPSODY IN BLUE... ESPLENDOROSO!!!...
The back and forth between Hancock and Dudamel is absolutely breathtaking. I remember seeing this on public television a few years ago and was so completely mesmerized by the almost sensual way HH teased the notes out of the piano. You know the notes are coming but Herbie makes you wait for them. It's beautiful! Easily the best performance of Rhapsody in Blue I have ever had the pleasure to witness.
THESE TWO GENIUSES PLUS THE. LA PHILHARMONIC REALLY BRINGING TO LIFE THIS RAPSODY. TO ME IT IS MORE VIBRANT AND ALIVE THAN NEVER BEFORE. DUDAMEL' JOY WHILE WATCHING HERVIE PLAY IS CONTAGIOUS. AT THE SAME TIME HERVIE IS SO IMMERSED IN EVERY NOTE IT IS SIMLY AMAZING G GERSHWIN MUST BE ELATED WITH THIS GLORIOUS NEW VERSION!!! TOO MANY ADJECTIVES? SORRY I COULD NOT FIND MORE!!!
Having listening thousands of versions last sixty years, this one ie the one I do love : so much life, so much expression and personnality in Herbie's play and the orchestre....
Wow! What a version of this classic and jazz standard. Loved the play between HH and Dudamel, who was clearly loving every minute of Herbie's performance and Herbie, man, swinging, honky tonk, backbeat, improvising... And that clarinet solo :-D
Christ on toast, this is phenomenal. And that clarinetist, wow. Just wow. I was expecting the excellent direction and piano, but she really took me by surprise in the best way possible.
Loved seeing the performers interact, the smiles on their faces, the chuckles from the audience. Rhapsody In Blue always struck me as a brilliant and beautiful piece, and one with a lot of humour; it was great to see that aspect of it come through. I've heard quite a few versions and this is one of the best I've heard! Liked Herbie's rendition, he gave it an interpretation that is uniquely his own while accentuating the piece itself.
100% agree.. I'm Classically-trained, but also play Jazz (and Pop, R&B, Ragtime, film themes) -- and studied/performed this in High School, College and continue to play it in my "down time" of performances in Boston... and always find new tempi and inflections in this piece.. This is American Music at its finest
This shows the difference between READING music and PLAYING music. Who cares if it's not technically brilliant. If I wanted technically brilliant I'd listen to midi. This is what music really is. Best rendition of Rhapsody in Blue I've ever heard.
This is the most amazing performance of Rhapsody in Blue I have ever heard and seen. And it is one of my most favorite songs. Herbie Hancock tears the keys up and Dudamel lets Herbie go. Hancock plays with, behind and in front of the rest of the orchestra to perfection.
This is THE pinacle recording of this piece. Never have I ever heard this piece played wuth as much soul and musical varyation. Herbie is one of the great masters and thd LA Ohil turns in an amazing performance as well. Bravi.
all those musicians of the LA phil can say they played with herbie hancock! That in itself is an impressive thing on a resume! Herbie hancock right now is probably one the most recognizable true musician we have today that can play all genres!
I have herd this Rhapsody too many times to count, however I never had so much fun listening to the pianist's arrangement as I did hearing this pianist for the first time. I absolutely loved this arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue better than any I've heard before including George Gershwin himself!
He started his career as a classical pianist performing with symphonies in Chicago and Boston as a child. He stepped out of his comfort zone in his formative years when he ventured into jazz and synth playing although he QUICKLY found comfort with that too lol
Lol anyone who thinks this is bad for technical over musical reasons should stop calling themselves a musician at all. Incredible performance of this piece. The best I’ve ever seen.
I noticed many imperfections, but also that this version swings more than most. It has gusto which I rarely found in other renderings, Its rythmical approach is jazzy, verging occasionaly on ragtime and why not, indeed? Now, Paul, if you know of versions with as much swing and groove and even better technical achievements, do point me towards them, please. If not, I'll stick to this one, despite its failings, because, in my humble opinion, the qualities overcome the weaknesses.
Gershwin was and is an underrated composer. He combines so many different elements in this piece. I especially like the Jewish Russian influence you can hear now and then.
Hancock played it nearly by heart, totally humbled, "jazzed" and just perfekt. My favourite performance
The clarinetist's name is Michele Zukovsky. She has been principal clarinetist with the LA Philharmonic for a very long time, and is world famous among symphony musicians.
She is amazing!!!!!!
That intro gave me chills!!!
I have heard many and this is the best!! Hancock has put soul into it. It should have a million likes.
Proof that playing all the right notes is less important than having something to say. Exceptional performance.
Out of this world!!! The most fantastic performance of Gershwin’s masterpiece I have ever heard! Bravooooo!

Coincido !
OMG how awesome this is! And how much Gershwin would've enjoyed this interpretation if he was alive. Excellent!

One of the best performances of the Rhapsody I have ever heard, absolute bliss.

merveilleuse musique et merveilleux artistes !
That’s the real spirit of the piece! Great Sir H. Hancock! Great Sir G. Dudamel! Great LA Phil!
I love this piece, and I can't imagine it performed better than it was here.
Try the Eldar Djangirov and Yuja Wang versions also!

BEST VERSION EVER!!
Marvellous performances! Congratulations to all! You gave us a great present.
My second cousin Kari shared this video with her son, my 3rd cousin, 5 year old Jack, Jack liked the applauding..
Both Dudamel and Hancock appear to be thoroughly enjoying themselves.

This is Alive! It is fun, it is sassy, it is bold. It is Jazz Baby. Well done.

ALucinante !!! Bravo Dudamel orquesta y pianista Fidedignos Totales ! Oh George sonríe 🙌🙌🙌🙌
I think it's really cool when people, like Herbie Hancock, step outside of their comfort zone and do something like this. Very nice!
He started his career as a classical pianist performing with symphonies in Chicago and Boston as a child. He stepped out of his comfort zone in his formative years when he ventured into jazz and synth playing although he QUICKLY found comfort with that too lol
Outstanding!
Enjoyed every moment, every second, every NOTE of this immortal masterpiece.
Jazz&classical at it"s best.
That intro gave me chills! Great Mme. Zukovsky on clarinet!
Me fascina ! Felicidades !!! Vives el sentimiento de la música !!!¡Dudamel
Pura maravilha!👋👋👋👋👋
Lol anyone who thinks this is bad for technical over musical reasons should stop calling themselves a musician at all. Incredible performance of this piece. The best I’ve ever seen.
merveilleuse clarinetiste !
Dudamel's hair is relatively calm in this performance. It's unusual
What a stellar performance. Just about note perfect. More, please.
This is one of the few times (Bernstein was one) that I here the Rapsody in Blue as a classical piece instead of a pop music feature.
You should listen to Yuja Wang, Eldar Djangirov too.
Right. this is what I want from music. Bravo!!!!!!!
Maravilhoso !
I noticed many imperfections, but also that this version swings more than most. It has gusto which I rarely found in other renderings, Its rythmical approach is jazzy, verging occasionaly on ragtime and why not, indeed?

Increible !!! Mucho talento en estos maestros
Obra genial,arranjo incomparável.
