This Sonic 2 hack features cut zones added as secret zones. Each secret zone can be found by falling into various bottomless pits except Sand Shower which is accessed with an object that launches you into the sky. Bottomless pits that don't send you to a secret zone have been blocked off aside from the oil/quicksand pits in Oil Ocean and Sand Shower since you can jump out of them. Made by CamManS5.

imagine gaslighting a 90's kid by swapping his sonic 2 cartridge with this, him finding a secret zone, then swapping his cartridge back to regular sonic 2 when he tries to show it to his friends
Long time no see, Satan!
is this really called a "secret level"-_-
and this is not a secret level is non level
and I agree with Red of the BG
You are a madman
The idea of bottomless pits leading to alternate routes instead of death gives me big Rondo of Blood vibes, and I’m all for that.
I just love how the scrapped zones (even Genocide City) had this organic flow and felt like they were always there hidden until sonic ventured off the path and discovered a whole new hidden world.
well moreso sonic fucked up and fell but accidentally found this
It's been too long since I've seen a creative take on a ROM hack. I hope they update this with improved art. This may become my definitive way of playing Sonic 2 if they build upon it.
When most video games have secret entrances to hidden levels, the entrances are usually locatable through the player's own observational skill, not by jumping down a random bottomless pit. Why would you take an obstacle which is usually made to punish incompetent platforming, and now make it a reward?
I'll say this though, I like the Oil Ocean --> Sand Shower secret. It's clever how at 17:11 the pathway right before you take that green elevator has a small glimpse of the bottom of the secret platform. It was a smart way of hinting to the player that a platform was floating there, without straight up showing us the platform in full.
That’s an issue I take with the implementation of hidden palace in the remakes. Putting it down the mystic cave spike pit is a fun nod for returning players, but it’s going to be completely random for new players. And an entire level is a pretty significant thing to hide in a non-obvious place like that.
@@xtremexavier4822 new players fall down the thing accidentally all the time though
It's forgivable here, since they removed every other bottomless pit.
A lot of secrets back then were supposed to be real secrets you stumbled upon, not actively hunted for.
I just love how the scrapped zones (even Genocide City) had this organic flow and felt like they were always there hidden until sonic ventured off the path and discovered a whole new hidden world.
Specially the fact with some zones like Sky Chase or Metropolis Act 2 where you had 3 whole acts of Metropolis, here instead if you fall into the secret Cyber City zone you skip Metropolis Act 3 entirely and in sky chase if you fall into Snowy Winter zone not only you get a whole new zone to play with but the second part of Cyber City which leads to a totally different way of getting into the Death Egg, love how tails gets behind to operate the computer that allows sonic to being teleported into the Death Egg making more sense why Tails gets behind in the first place.
The only thing i can nitpick about it is the lack of level transitions make them feel very disconnected from the regular main zones, the main zones were already very disconnected from each other without proper transition, but its just a nitpick because it fits with how Sonic 2 was made and because level transitions werent a thing until Sonic 3, but if you the creator of this hack ever read this it could be cool to have level transitions that makes the already nice flow the secret zones have even nicer if you ever want to revisit this and add something up to make it even cooler that is.
Eh, I wouldn't really complain about a lack of transitions. I mean with that logic, I'd like to see them in Sonic 1 and CD as well. A bit unfair only Sonic 2 gets them, right?
@@Medachod counterpoint: Sonic 2 is a better game than both of them
@@superstarblue2706 True.
Another Way Tails Gets Left Behind Is In The Wing Fortress
(The Plane Gets Hit By The Lasers)
i think my only issue is that the cyber city level IS Metropolis act 3. The level itself was finalized, and they just merged it with metropolis, thats why act 3 has stuff neither act 1 or 2 have
0:43 bro really going so fast he phasing through springs
i like the hidden paths, their entrances fit really well within the level
The idea of expanding the secret entrance of Hidden Palace (Of the 2013 version) with the other deleted zones is quite epic
Wow, this hack is pretty accurate with the music and zone decision
True. Still would've used MPZ2P as HPZ's theme
@@Pol74698 Agreed, because that’s what it was meant for originally.
@@robbiewalker2831 Yeah. Song 10 was supposedly for a cutscene related to Hidden Palace.
Well, i think rock world should have been accesed through hill top
@@Raems08 I honestly think it makes sense, this INCREDIBLE version of Wood Zone seems to use vertical wrapping, so it is a ridiculously tall level, so think of it as a gigantic forest. Also I loved the fact that the scyter enemies don't shoot their claws no matter what in this level.
Definitely the best rendition of the level in my opinion.👌
Who else prefers the look of the beta version of Casino Night Zone? It just looks much more vibrant & inviting to me.
Something I like about this is the fact that, despite the new zones, it's still Sonic 2. You can play through the entire base game, and not go out of your way to discover any secrets, and it would still work!

The hill top to wood zone makes so much sense. Hill top is basically a mountain so falling into a forest below it makes so much sense
1:34 rock world zone 7:19 proto casino night zone 10:27 wood zone 14:29 hidden palace zone 17:20 sand shower zone 25:35 cyber city zone 26:50 snowy winter zone 27:34 cyber city zone 2.0 28:34 death egg zone 2.0

imagine being a time traveler and going to the year 1992 and then showing everybody this alternate version.
Then it inspires the creator of this mod to create the mod
1:37 rock world zone ( was supposed to be a past version of sand shower zone and sonic 2 was supposed to have a time traveling feature and was probably scrapped to be in sonic cd it is not in any old builds of the game)
10:29 wood zone (Simon Wai build)
14:32 hidden palace zone (2013 iOS remake but a bit different)
17:24 sand shower zone (was supposed to be named dust hill zone I think also only is in Simon Wai build and nick arcade also was in sonic cd as desert dazzled and in sonic mania as Mirage saloon zone)
25:38 cyber city (was changed because of a word RUclips wouldn’t like also could be a cybershell reference cyber city was a mechanical based zone and was scrapped for act 3 of Metropolis zone it was also reused for the Machine in sonic cd)
26:57 snowy winter zone (was supposed to transition from sand shower zone and was based of of sand shower zone)
27:37 cyber city zone (again)
28:57 death egg zone (not a secret level but is way different from the actual death egg also was supposed to be called the last battle in space and was remade into sky chase was in the Simon Wai build)
There are also these unused levels : Ocean Wind Zone (was meant to be the second stage in the game after Emerald Hill Zone and would've been a coastal area with piers)
Tropical Plant/Tropical Sun Zone (a rather unknown stage with only concept art available)
Blue Lake/Blue Ocean Zone (also rather unknown of a level and only has concept art was also reused for wing fortress)
Madness Mountain Zone (ANOTHER rather unknown level and only has concept art available also possibly a early version of mystic cave)
Emerald Isle Zone (a scrapped stage similiar to Aquatic Ruin Zone It is unknown if this was an early name for the level)
Olympus Zone (one of the most unknown stages and only having proof of its existence is an early map of sonic 2 Hirokazu Yasuhara identified it as "The Shrine" given that his timeline notes a "Hidden Shrine" it’s possible this could be a earlier version of hidden palace zone)
This took a long time so please like. 😄
Edit: 14:32 @kalpana gurung reminded me in the reply’s that hidden palace zone was actually not a modified version of the 2013 Christian Whitehead remake it was the proto palace secret where in the rerelease if in the sound test you played the sounds 3 3 3 B 10 10 10 4 and selected the hidden palace zone then it would load you into the original hidden palace zone or as it’s called here proto palace zone where the layout is the some as the original there is even a tails monitor and when you step on the otherwise breakable emerald you teleport back and I find it interesting because lots of people believe this was originally how you get super sonic and a similar green emerald was used in sonic 3& knuckles which also gave thing like meca sonic a super form so is this a coincidence? I don’t know but it’s pretty interesting!
Also in 25:38 @certified gamer also reminded me in the reply’s that this wasn’t a cybershell reference it’s was changed because the Japanese developers where trying to make a cool name for a level and when they translated it it said well I’ll just say cyber city.
And also at 7:24 prismatic prongle reminded me about the old casino night zone it’s not really scraped they just changed the colors probably because there was way too much color in the level and also changed the layout I mean look at all that pink.
Cool 😁
How about early casino night zone
Cyber city was a rename after the Japanese side of STI figured out genocide city was a mistranslation
2:03 Hidden Palace zone: YOU STOLE MY TRACK
Thats proto palace because the music is different + there is no fall at the start.
They should have put these zones in Sonic Origins
And in the mobile version too
At least we have hidden palace
With a new boss
reminds me of the Sonic The Hedgehog 2 "Complete" Edition, which wedged in a bunch of "cut" zones. It was never actually completed - Wood Zone was missing a bunch of level geometry and Genocide City just reused Casino Night's layout - but the "restored" assets were nice at least.
Aaaah, very clever reference to Mario 2: The Lost Levels.
very clever 👏 👌
... This guy has played this game since 1946 y'all man has some serious memory and luck
Nice idea to have beta casino night accessible through regular casino night, it’s like a second floor.
And second floor is bit too 18+ for sonic and tails
They ACTUALLY called it Sand Shower. Props to the creators of this hack.
Wouldve been really cool for cyber zone to be the Act 3 Metropolis zone as it was intended to be
Well it would have been 2 acts, just like all the cut zones
@@arzfan29 No. Cyber City was intended to be a one-act zone, which was later scrapped and its layout was reused for Metropolis 3, which is why it has 3 acts.
I heard they recycled some of the artwork from Cyber City Zone to use for a Sonic Spinball zone.
Love the idea - basically expanded upon Sonic 2 Remaster's method of getting to Hidden Palace
How to make a secret zone: take any infamous part of a sonic zone ( like an unexpected pit ) and make it lead to a scrapped zone when you fall for it.
The nice version of S2, idk what to say
Fun fact about the original Cyber City, the graphics that we're going to be used in the zone got repurposed for Sonic spinball in the level the machine
poor Doctor Ivo Robotnik, don't matter what hidden level there is Sonic always messes up his plans
1:35 a question about special areas
I mean, emerald hill are above rock world?
7:21 In casino night I remember that there were many areas with different colors or aspects
First time I'm seeing a hack with wood zone with a good level layout.
This hack is awesome! the idea of finding an hidden level that is an alternate route in the game it's so cool to me
i love the detail where the tornado doesn’t have the rocket cause it didn’t get shot down
I hope that this mod eventually makes its way to the 2013 remaster of the game
The transition from cyber city to death egg is really interesting
Just saying for sonic mania 2 if it ever comes out I just wanna see these cut zones fully realized
They did that originally with mirage saloon
New transitions for secret zones, huh? Sweet!
Rock world looks like the past hill top
I love how prototype casino night looks!
This should feels like it should of been made 7 years ago, not 7 days
I like the transition to the death egg
It like the 2013 remake of Sonic 2, but expanded in more secret levels! Great job!
honestly would’ve like some unique bosses but i have to admit, this is a pretty cool rom hack
u change my statement, because of lore, robotnik/eggman didnt expect sonic to go to those areas.
Huh he used different machine in sonic 2 mobile hidden palace
When you fell somewhere you werent supposed to fall, but you didnt regret that.
This is what Sonic 2 8-it should've been. Not that 8-bit Sonic 2 wasn't good as it is, but it would've been cool if the sequel had some consistency with 8-bit Sonic 1, where we have stages from the 16-bit version, with some new ones sprinkled in to make the experience unique. Another cool idea is that if you played as Tails, when you reach Wing Fortress and the Tornado is shot down, Tails would be taken to Snowy Winter Zone, similar to Knuckles' route in Mirage Saloon in Sonic Mania, and have to fight a new final boss, like maybe a computer that controls the Death Egg, or a modified Silver Sonic.
We are so damn close too getting a sonic 2 that the team originally wanted too make. This might as well be called sonic 2 definitive edition
1:37 Rock World zone
7:24 Casino Party zone act 1
8:36 Casino Party zone act 2
10:30 Wood zone act 1
11:30 Wood zone act 2
14:33 Hidden Palace zone
17:24 Sand Shower zone act 1
18:15 Sand Shower zone act 2
25:37 Cyber City zone act (A)
26:58 Snowy Winter zone
27:38 Cyber City zone act (B)
28:58 Death Egg zone prototype
This is the best hack about the missing zones that I have seen.
Secret zones in: Emerald Hill, Casino Night, Hill Top, Mystic Cave, Oil Ocean, Metropolis, Sky Chase, Snowy Winter
Fun fact: did you know that Metropolis 3 is a scrap level of genocide city.
Fun fact 2: colorful casino night is actually in the prototype
This is really clever.
I was worried they might've not used the hidden palace zone song for it... phew!
Secret Zones:
Rock World Zone 1:35
Proto Casino Night Zone 7:19
Woods Zone 10:27
Hidden Palace Zone 14:30
Sand Shower Zone 17:21
Cyber City Zone 25:36
Snowy Winter Zone 26:56
Damn this is cool, i hope someone ports these to S2(2013)
Good ol' proto palace. Its even finished!
Every single sonic extra zone hack no matter which game it is: hmmm ok imma borrow bosses from existing ones and call it a day.
that's cuz creating entirely new ai is more difficult than adding new stages, esp since there's already existing tools for adding levels and the like
Secret zones:
Rock World Zone
Old Casino Night Zone
Wood Zone
Hidden Palace Zone
Sand Shower Zone
Cyber City Zone 1
Snowy Winter Zone
Cyber City Zone 2
Death Egg Zone
To be honest, while the stages are cool and surprisingly accurate in some cases, I don’t like the way in which they were implemented. They feel incredibly arbitrary, and too short for something I had to jump down a random bottomless pit for, especially with the fact it isn’t consistent (Winter leading to Cyber for the boss fight, Dust Hill found by cannon,Death Egg being a full stage like in the concept regardless). While I get Hidden Palace had you do this in the taxman port, it was under a bridge where you could jump under because it was closed in front of a pit, meaning multiple players could reach it accidentally- plus, it’s called *hidden* palace for a reason.
From a game design standpoint, some people could play the entire game without finding any of these if they didn’t have a guide or something. I also don’t expect the dev(s) of this mod to make it a grand experience like Sonic Delta, which had new bosses for most of these zones (even backporting the Taxman Port boss to Hidden Palace), but I’d rather it at least be more of a showcase rather than a scavenger hunt to find which random hole I have to jump down to access the thing I downloaded the mod for. The devs should least re-arrange the level order and include the new stages in it or make it so the game kicks you to Level Select immediately, or something.
quick note: all other bottomless pits have been removed
8:15 Perfect beat
Cyber city actually looks cool
Wood zone and rock world are my favorite (EDIT) i like hidden palace too
fun fact: hidden Palace was called blue lake in sonic 2's concept art
Hidden Palace zone looks so good
1:35 Rock World Is Taken Place At The Bottem of Emerald Hill. And Has The Hidden Palace 2P Music.
Fun Fact: 14:29 That Hidden palace zone entry exists in Android remaster
Yeah, but there's no "descending" transition.
This hack makes Sonic 2 feel more open
fun fact: aquatic ruins have a secret zone and in the secret zone you play as amy
Plot twist: Tropical Plant fades into reality
This is actually pretty cool
I dont like Snowy Winter Zone. It's a reskinned Sand Shower Zone with generic presents. Only thematically appropriate one time a year. Plus it's too easy of a level to be put at the end under Sky Chase
Plus these don't seem to be put together with any challenge in mind. Nice aesthetically, but they kind of play themselves right?
New Death Egg sequence is cool
if this was real sonic 2 would be the actual perfection of the mega drive
I noticed that many of these extra levels have an appearance in sonic 3 or sonic and knuckles.
If the secret zones were in sonic origins.
Ye
I tried to how to get to wood zone because I thought this was in sonic origins but in then I died and I was like oh
Hidden Palace is the only one secret level what got restored in Origins
@@Davo255_ and that's only because it was in the mobile port. Sega should actually make ports worth buying...
Looks alright. Rock Zone looks pretty lame though.
Huh. Aquatic ruins theme kinda works for a desert setting.
They should've utilized some of the prototype music for the hidden zones.
This is just a normal sonic 2 playthrough if these zones werent scrapped
i want an edgy version that keeps genocide city instead of cyber city
Did anybody notice that all the Unused zones have the same bosses as the One that replaced them
Yeah kind of sad we don’t have new bosses for each zone
25:37 HELL YEAH CASINO NIGHT ZONE 2P VERSION MUSIC!!
yoona casino night he turned out to be one of the 3 custom stages
Spoiler: the second and the green version
Hey, I saw that sometimes when Sonic jumps he completely turns into a blue ball. Why?
Sonic's jump animation didn't have any diagonal sprites in the original games; it only had up, down, left, right, and used the blue ball for the in-between frames. Sometimes, Sonic just kinda spins so fast that the game doesn't process the other sprites and just turns him into a blue ball.
WHERE’S GENOCIDE CITY?
Cyber city IS GENO. City
@@b.r.c7544 FAKE

They had the option to let you skip metropolis zone and didn’t take it, sad. Otherwise great mod although the levels are a little short
I do like how in emerald hill in the normal game in that put you die but in this hack it takes you to rock world
my guy taking clutches and no dmg, giga chad
Cyber City looks so beautiful oh my goodness
Idk about that whole sand shower Zone own thing. Those are all of the stuff for dust Hill Zone. Sand shower Zone what's the difference is zone. They got the music right, just not the name.
"Dust Hill" was actually a name intended for a ruined present version of Emerald Hill Zone when the game was intended to have a time travel based plot (in other words, extremely early into the games development. most of this stuff was scrapped before the nick arcade prototype). For some reason, the name got attached to Mystic Cave Zone and persisted until the September 14th prototype, only being changed in Beta 4. (interesting side note: the september 14 prototype introduced title cards for the zones, which means that dust hill could have been intended as mystic cave's final name before someone realized it wouldn't make sense and changed it.)
Meanwhile, the name "Sand Shower" was intended for a desert-type zone since this time travel plot. If I had to guess, the "Dust Hill = desert zone" misconception came from the name being in the stage selects of many of the prototypes and someone, for whatever reason, stuck it onto the desert zone mockup.
tl;dr: Sand Shower was the original intended name for the desert zone since the beginning.
@@conlia oh goodness. Long reading. Lol
@@conlia sand shower was supposed to be a separate Zone then Dust Hill. Saint shower was developed before dust Hill Zone. Is something weird that you can do, I don't know what it is for sure or how to explain it, but when you select the levels to the most earliest version of Sonic 2, you'll find that there are two desert zones. Instead of one.
@@conlia The Dust Hill title card was changed in the CENSOR Prototype. Also, the Title Cards weren't fix. On Censor, SEVERAL Zone names were changed.

You can go to rock world zone in to bottomles locations of emerald hill
May I ask why rock world is not accessible through hill top? Because that rock world background certainly looks like the bottom of hill top zone.
I played Sonic 2 a lot when I was younger and never even knew these secret stages existed. Which format release where they on? Also when you finished a secret zone did you return to the one you bypassed from or just proceeded to the next?
