    When most people think "Brass", they think loud sharp notes played in a band. This performance shows that Brass can be soft and subtle as wel.

      These guys are schooled in the classical approach to playing. Everything smooth, refined. Very different than a jazzer's approach.

    • @uliutz
      @uliutz 5 лет назад +3

      You have to keep in mind that they play with eb trumpets and you most certainly play with bb trumpets which makes it a lot harder. Highest note in this is a c, from what i'm hearing, not too easy playing that note nice and smooth.

    • @bikkies
      @bikkies 5 лет назад +4

      It's probably not too controversial to say many believe J S Bach to be the finest composer of fugues the world has yet seen. I know this piece from the organ score but this works superbly for brass, each voice adding a unique and complementary tone, strengthening the whole while underlining the counterpoint. Excellently delivered.

  • @pedrod.7576
    @pedrod.7576 7 месяцев назад +10

    The fact that you need 5 brass players to play this shows how much of a genius you have to be to play organ. Mad respect for organists. Great performance by the bass band, too, of course!

    • @youtuuba
      @youtuuba 11 месяцев назад +1

      Amazing how somebody can write a comment with so little knowledge of what they are writing about.
      - Bach wrote this as a 4 voice fugue for organ. It is not at all amazing that a brass quintet can play all the parts when they have five instruments to do it with.
      - Why would they NOT stay 'true to the original melody'?
      - Why would they NOT stay true to the harmony (which, BTW in a fugue is buried in the contrapuntal interweaving of the parts), so it would require a major recomposition to NOT have the harmony come out the same as Bach wrote it?
      - There are no original dynamics. Organ parts are not known for having dynamic markings, as the similar effect is achieved by how the part of written and how each organist sets up the stops on the organ. The brass quintet pretty much just plays each part at the same dynamic level throughout, and lets Bach's writing take care of the dynamic effects.
      - There are no original tempo markings in the sense that there would be for many pieces of ensemble music. The organist performs at whatever tempo they feel is appropriate. The brass quintet does likewise.

    In 2017, every week after my gen psych class I would go down the hallway and sit outside the music appreciation class and listen to them play this through the closed door. Idk why they made them listen to it every single week but I never knew the name of it all this time and I loved it. It's lived rent-free in my head for years and I never knew the name. I just hummed the tune into Google and it sent me here. The nostalgia is unreal. What beautiful music 😍
