Thanks for the Audio Monitoring tip! This led me to my a solution for recording the ATEM Mini video output on a Mac. If you do a "New Movie Recording" instead, you can choose "Blackmagic Design" for the Camera and Microphone setting and then hit the record button. If you set the Quality setting to "Maximum" , Quicktime encodes the video using Apple ProRes 422, for the "High" setting it is encoded in H.264. If I'm not streaming, just want to record the ATEM Mini output and want to avoid having to use OBS or Wirecast, using Quicktime Player seems like a cool trick too?

Great videos thanks! I am trying to use your monitoring trick but I can only find the quicktime player for windows which doesn't allow the new audio recording option. Is there a safe place to download quicktime pro or an alternative program that will work for windows?
Thanks for the video Alex, appreciate the time taken. When you turned on flying key at 10:35 I was wondering if you could switch between the onscreen record and full screen camera view of yourself at the touch of the camera/preview buttons... as opposed to them being overplayed simultaneously? But I think you done it at 15:15 I'm just not sure on what setup you did to make the screen an input? Great work as always ant thanks again!
Thanks for the lovely comment. I think your questions is basically can you change camera angles and have the chroma keyer / flying key stay on screen? The answer is yes, it is an option in the ATEM setup utility. I currently have mine set to take the key off air when I switch camera, but this can be changed. Hope that is what you were asking, if not, let me know and i'll try help more :)
Alex Pettitt thanks mate... no that’s now what I meant but I realised I over complicated the question so that’s my bad... simply... can I in a live stream switch between a camera facing me and my screen so if I’m doing a tutorial I could for example for the 1st minute do an into with a camera facing me then press a button and then my screen is being streamed?
Thanks for the video Alex. You have given me more reasons now to want the ATEM Mini. Blackmagic Design makes some great products. I notice you where filming this video with a BMPCC 6K or 4K. At some stage could you do a video with your studio setup and equipment used to make these video? I have the BMPCC 6K and want to improve my very, very basic studio setup.
Excellent stuff Alex. Re-watched it today after trying to get the chroma key working the other night unsuccessfully, your video is excellent. Question, is it possible to save a macro so each time you use the ATEM, perhaps on a different computer? I’d ideally like to store macros on an Elgato Streamdeck so the chromakey A, B and Full have a button, and also show start and FTB bring up music level.
I also came for the audio but all tips were great. Regarding audio, I assume the HDMI out right on the ATEM is going to the little black magic video Monitor?. Another question, so matching cameras for at least common black point saturation etc., I’m considering using the scopes built-in to the Black magic video monitor and using them PGM verses M/V video out to isolate , Get a full screen on each feed. Wonder if there any other solutions to get some kind of video scopes (Vector, waveform, RBG parade etc.) to do just a touch of camera matching. I’m actually using to old-school 4K Black Magic‘s coupled with the modern 6K pocket and they all are great but just needed the tweaking to sync The look between them. 😃
Alex, love your videos! Definitely the best ones to learn about the ATEM mini. One question: I have to capture two hour classes in a 500 seat hall with picture in picture of the powerpoint. (see link for example of final product) Now I do it by shooting the instructor to on a videocamera and using Adobe Captivate to screen record the instuctor's slides on a separate laptop while clicking through the slides when he does. I then plug them both into Premiere Pro to resize and export as a two hour long mp4 which is then put onto youtube. Very time consuming with processing and upload times and sort of backwards but it does work. His laptop ppt goes to the projector via a wireless hdmi system. Do you think I could do this all live by splitting the hdmi signal from the wireless receiver (which is right next to my camera) as input 2 on ATEM, picture in picture that to the correct size, use the video camera as input 1, and record straight to Quicktime (with Macros set to fade in first 10 seconds of still image with name of class, fade up audio, fade in camera and powerpoint as you can see in my example clip). Seems like I would not have to edit at all (as long as I don't screw something up). I would save to sd card on camera in case I did make a mistake or if hardware fails of course. I have audio through a soundboard that normally goes to my camera but could go straight to ATEM mini instead at line level. I would monitor audio on laptop with headphones thru quicktime as a movie recording. Does this make sense? Does quicktime have a problem recording 2 hours straight? I tried before doing hour long screen recording of powerpoint and it crashed. Or could I save even more time by running the class as a youtube live stream and recording that? Then I wouldn't have to upload from quicktime file to youtube at all. I'm nervous without backups however. thanks in advance ruclips.net/video/2JqQm8XaNtE/видео.html
Everything you have said here you can do and it certainly would save a lot of time that your currently spending in the edit. My biggest advice would be to test your setup thoroughly before using it for one of these classes. In my experience QuickTime may not be your best option for recording a 2 hour session, as your file is going to be huge (if recorded at pro-res). Maybe try downloading OBS and recording at H.264 through that. OBS is used to handling hours of recording and streaming. The idea of streaming to RUclips is a good one... but it will heavily depend on if you have a stable internet connection. Hope this helps!
@@AlexPettitt awesome. thanks. and yes, always plenty of testing. you're right about using OBS instead of quicktime for sure. unstable internet in the venue as of testing yesterday so maybe not youtube livestream either. i will also record to sd card on camera itself in case some snafu happens and OBS recording fails at least i'll have the video of instructor and can fix in premiere pro later. i tried it yesterday with just a webcam recording one hour as mp4 offline and that worked well. now just have to get my hands on an atem mini and start tinkering around.
I use a mixer with XLR microphones. What is a good way to get this audio into the ATEM mini? I've gone from the mixer to the XLR input on the video camera but that doesn't seem optimal.
ronnyg1dc thanks 😊 At this price point, it is unlikely that BM will be able to bring a Multiview to the unit as I believe it will require hardware and not just software upgrade.
@@AlexPettitt thanks for the reply. Dang don't want to pay 400.00 more for just that one feature. Still you can preview each camera before making it live correct?
ronnyg1dc It doesn’t appear to have separate preview and program buss monitoring. One way around this is to monitor the preview buss via HDMI and treat the stream as your program buss. That won’t allow for quick switching like sport because of the delay. The only solution for that is individual monitors for each source. It’s not perfect but then it’s cheaper than most of the standalone single channel encoders. And unlike a lot of them it actually appears to work.
Great video Alex! Very helpful. I wanted to know if you can change the size of the picture in picture to allow for presentation material to be show on half of the screen and the next half can allow for the multiple camera angles?
@@mccleish Because I've wirecast I don't know the exact answer for OBS related things. But, in this case use the ATEM only for camera source switching and in OBS add another capture card for screen source. I bet you can resize and mix them in OBS.
@@MeetupvideoUK Thanks for your feedback! Purchasing a capture card such as the Blackmagic mini recorder for setup should work? Do you have a sample of the layout?
HI Alex I love the videos. I am working on a set up for our church and as it only have one HDMI out I was hoping to use a video splitter to send the signal to monitor and then off to TV's in other parts of the building. I have purchased a cheap HDMI splitter but when I plug it into HDMI output and then take one of the signal from the splitter to monitor it now longer can see the HDMI output. Any thoughts? Is the problem with the splitter or the way the HDMI output works? Have you successfully used a splitter with this product?
Love this pro video, thanks a lot Alex. I was wondering: is it possible to control the macros of the ATEM Mini through a Streamdeck? I just got the Elgato, but I couldn’t find a way to do that... Thanks, Stephan
Hi Alex, I work for a small charity and we have had to change the way we support our clients, due to COVID restrictions. We have started using MS Teams and are doing some meetings and training on line now, but are seeing the limitations. I came across your channel and demos of this interesting kit. I have a few questions: 1. Is there much training needed to get familiar with this kit? 2. We are considering kitting out a small webinar suite for course delivery and live events - could you recommend a list of equipGabment that would suit this task? Thanks -
Hi Alex! My setup includes two pocket 4k’s, a bmcc and Atem mini. For audio, Sennheiser lavalier. I’m using Zoom webinar->Facebook LIVE and I’m noticing a major audio delay on my side! (no voice delay on my guests side (they are simply using iPhone). 1. What output settings should I set my Pocket 4k’s to to prevent voice delay? 2. Should I plug my lavaliers directly into my Atem mini or into Pocket 4k’s? 3. Should I be using something other than Zoom to livestream interviews w third parties? Would appreciate any advice!!! Cheers, Alisha Ramsey
Hey Alex, Awesome video man... My QuickTime doesn’t see my Atem Mini Pro as for audio... So I have to connect Cat5 from computer to Atem to recognize Atem as an Audio Output?
Alex still waiting to receive my Mini that I ordered a while back. These videos really are giving me a jump start on the device before I get it. One question on the Macros. I noticed that as you select what you want to do, the timing is not contingent on how fast you make the selections, so you can take your time with that. also you can select a delay between transitions or effects so that when you play them back they will fire in the order you selected. Is that right? Frank
Franklin Gorora hey Frank, glad to hear these videos are working. Basically the pauses are for all actions, not just transitions... if you were to record a macro without any pauses, all actions would happen at the same time. So for example, in my demo, we want to add a pause of around 2 seconds before taking the DSK on... if we didn’t, it’s likely the DSK would come on air when we still have the holding slate in the media player. So pauses are an important part of macro building :) Hope this makes sense :)
Any thoughts on how the operator can view the individual video feeds? I guess you could split each HDMI signal coming in to the ATEM mini - but wondered if you've thought of a better approach! :)
Hello! Thanks for tips. I'm curious about the audio mixer. On blackmagic website there is a screenshot of Atem control software shows audio mixer and you can clearly see that you can tweak any of 12 channel individually (left and right channels of each input separately). However I don't see such a possibility in any review, looks like you can't really split a stereo channel from mic or hdmi to two mono channels. Can you please check this thing, maybe there is something in audio tab in settings?
Hi thank you very much for your video: Can you stream simultaneously 2 different hdmi audio input? I mean .. if you have 2 microphones connected to 2 different cameras with their audiovideo signals into HDMI inputs, Can you keep both audio signals while switching only video?
Hi, 1. is there any delay when monitoring via the mac and apple quickime? 2. If you have the ATEM mini PRO, can you monitor the sound from external displays or mac the samr way when multiview is active? Thanks for your great content! :)
Thank you for sharing your tips! Q: Is it possible to use the USB-C as a program out via a usb-c to HDMI adapter and use the HDMI out as a preview? (I mean USB-C program out to a projector or TV, btw) I specifically want to know if this can be done WITHOUT the addition of a computer, just from the switcher. Thanks.
Hey Audiomajik, really good question! It isn't something I have tested, and I'm almost sure this wouldn't be possible but it's a cool idea! I'll try and test it and get back to you!
@@MeetupvideoUK THANK YOU!!!!! Now, how about if you run it from the USB-C into a computer and out of the HDMI port/adapter to the HDMI port of the computer into a projector? Do you think that would resolve it? Most laptops are made to go directly into a projector/tv that takes HDMI. I'm thinking that if you are taking the output from OBS or something to screen, it should seemingly work. The bottom line is, I'm trying to figure out how to use the HDMI port as a preview and still be able to get the program to a larger screen.
@@Audiomajik In Wirecast is easy. I've a Macbook Pro, so I assume you have the same. If so, then Output menu --> Multi-Viewer Output --> Configure displays... In the newly opened window: Monitor: select your HDMI output Layout: 1 Slot - Full Screen Labels: Do Not Draw Labels then on the big gray area select your source. Done. Peter
so I really want to be able to push camera1 and get MP1 with chromakey Camera 1 as it's fill source -- you know so I can switch back and forth between camera two on a guest and back to camera 1 but keep my chroma key on me. Any ideas?
When you are streaming and using your GoPro, are you having to push record on the GoPro itself in order for it to stay awake and not fall asleep during the stream? Do you have to push record in order for it to not show any card or battery info on the stream as well? I'm trying to set up my GoPro 9 but it falls asleep and I can't figure out how to keep it awake. I appreciate the help!
Pepe The Desert Boy Thanks, glad you liked th video. You can plug up to 4 cameras in the device...but as there is only 1 upstream keyer, you can only use one input for PIP or Chroma key at a time. Hope this helps

Hi...! Thank you for your videos, very helpful! 🙏 I still have a challenge with audio when in zoom I can hear myself and the background music but not the participants on zoom. I’ve tried quick time audio recording as you suggest but that creates a lot of eco. I tried my Feelworld LUTS7 which has an audio output for headphones but it didn’t work. I bought an audio extractor, it didn’t work. I don’t know what else to do. I’m using Rodecaster for audio, ATEM mini Pro and MacBook. My camera is Sony A7 Marc 3. I really appreciate if you could help me to solve this mystery! 🌸🙏🌸
Hey Alex. Thanks for the video. I've been struggling with the audio for some time. Right now I'm using a mic that goes directly into the camera instead of going into the mic input. What would you recommend? Thanks
Here is the challenge I’m facing: I’ve connected my wireless microphone ( Saramonic) to my Sony A7 III, then I connect my Sony camera to ATEM mini Pro, then I connect my Rodecaster through Mic 1 to ATEM mini pro for music, then I connect my ATEM to my Mac Pro. From Mac Pro I connect to a big monitor to see the people on zoom, from HDMI monitor output I connect to mini monitor, then I connect my headphones to mini monitor for feedback an monitoring.the problem is that in my headphone I hear myself and the music but not the participants on zoom. In zoom setting I chose black magic as camera and mic. What am I doing wrong. Btw, on ATEM I put mic1 to on and even camera mic to on mode in cam 1 Really appreciate if you can solve this mystery. Love & light.
Hi Mate! Thank you for your videos! Please help me, how do I connect a Logitech 4K Brio to my Blackmagic mini Pro ? I have got an usb-c to hdmi cable, but the camera is not being showed... Which kind of adapter do i need? Thank you!
Hi, Thank you for the informative video. This is all new for me. I want to use the mini for lifestreaming with two camera's. The camera's don't have audio-in so i'm forced to use a external audio. It's my understanding that if i plug the audio into the mini there will be a delay and audio and video will be out of sync. Do you know a solution for this (other than buying new camera's :) ) ?
Audio should be in sync if you plug direct into the ATEM mini, you might find one or two frame difference depending on what camera you are using but this is usually unnoticeable on a live stream. :)
How can I setup all 4 cameras with a Multiview option without complicated wires with ATEM Mini??? Is there a software that can give me Multiview??? Or is there a less expensive monitor that can doo than? I am in India and not everything is available here. Kindly help!
Agwanda I've also been checking all the regular dealers in the US. Done people have already gotten there preorders delivered. I'm ordering mine tomorrow, hopefully there will be some sort of Cyber Monday sale. Not likely but I'm hoping.
Did you connect your Gopro through Hdmi to Atem mini? I would like to build a setup with Atem Mini and three GoPros7 Black - I wonder if it will work. Thank you for the video!
Yes that's exactly what I did, you just need a HDMI to Micro HDMI cable and then to set the GoPro's auto off feature to 'never'.. that way it wont automatically switch off after a certain amount of time. Hope this helps
Hey Alex, I have a question. I using my ATEM Blackmagic for streaming. I hope I'm saying this correctly and it isn't confusing. The setup for my ATEM goes like this. I have a Dell computer. The USB-c is coming from the computer into the ATEM switcher. I have a 4k Canon camera plugged into HDMI #1 of the switcher and also an HDMI output coming from the switcher to two 60th TVs. I'm using the 1/8 inch headphone jack from the switcher being plugged into an analog mixer quarter inch. I would prefer not to use the 1/8 inch headphone jack because so much noise can come from that connection. Looking at your video, you're not plugged into the headphone jack your using the audio from the camera. Is there a way I could use the HDMI as an audio source instead of the 1/8 inch headphone jack? I hope this message isn't confusing. What got me to ask this question was about your video about computer monitoring the audio. Also, I'm using a Focusrite Solo that is plugged into the computer USB-C for audio from the computer. I really want to Illuminate the 1/8 inch connection if at all possible.
Very informative - thanks! One question: Can you not monitor your audio using the 3.5mm jack on the macbook? Doesn't the software's audio page have a virtual knob marked "headphones?" I'm waiting for this product on backorder and I'm trying to imagine why one wouldn't be able to monitor the audio with the laptop's audio. Thanks, again!
Honestly, five months after my initial comment, I've forgotten what the issue was. I ended up getting the ATEM Mini Pro, and all is well. Thanks, all the same, @@mikevazovski9160
Alex, many thanks for the videos on Atem Mini Pro, I am receiving mine today. Question that I have is for using Macros and the downstream key, at start of my streaming, can I have the logo on the right top constantly together with camera 1 content with green screen with image background, then I have the lower third fade in after 5 seconds of start for 30 seconds and then fade out. Hiw can I do that and can it be done using with Macros?
I’m ordering an ATEM Mini when they come back into stock. Is it worth going for the Pro version or will the standard one support a software multi-view despite being without the M/V keypad?
💥 Please, can you explain how can I resize the input cameras ? I have 4 Canon cameras, a 5D mark II, and 3 T5i, which runs magic lantern, so, I got a "clean" HDMI output. The problem is the size of the HDMI output images. I get the imsges inside a box. On OBS I could zoom in and fill exactly to 16:9 aspect ratio on each camera. But how to adjust the sources sizes on Atem mini Pro ? Is there any way or do I have to sell my cameras and purchase all 1920 x 1080p clean output cameras ? 😮😮

Wow! Animating from keyframe A to B is so cool! I have following idea. From full frame view of person talking -> keyframe A as just a cover to then scaling to smaller version on the left so that there is space for displaying presentation on the right. Too bad there is no circle PIP ;/
Is it possible to superimpose a powerpoint presentation on a camera feed during live broadcasting. If it can't be superimposed is it possible to have the powerpoint run on picture in picture?
If your host has a green screen background, you can absolutely key him/her on top of the presentation with ATEM Mini. If not, PIP will work just fine too :)
Do you think its possible to set up the atem to take screenshots and save to media pool without using the software? I mean set it up in the software but not have to use the laptop during a live event.
Thanks for the excellent tips Alex. I tried the audio monitoring through Quicktime but there's such latency it's unusable. Any way to fix latency problems? I'm using OBS with an BMD ultra-studio mini and Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. I know slightly off topic. Thanks in advance!
Alex, one thing that isn't clear to me as I try again to get it working. If my chroma is on Camera 1, and I want the background to be the image in the media player, how do I get the image to show? Can you walk me through that part? When I hit On Air, I get more of a pale blue color and not the background image.

How can you use lower thirds and/or motion graphics with the ATEM Mini. Thanks again for your time!! Keep up the good work...
Still lower thirds can be created and loaded into the media pool, you can then bring them on air using the DSK :)
@@AlexPettitt amazing!
Hi Alex. Great videos, thanks. Does the 'capture video' record to your mac? Thanks.
Great video and well explained. Thank you.
I'm nervous without backups however.
thanks in advance
ruclips.net/video/2JqQm8XaNtE/видео.html
I just bought Atem extreme ISO still learning
I use a mixer with XLR microphones. What is a good way to get this audio into the ATEM mini? I've gone from the mixer to the XLR input on the video camera but that doesn't seem optimal.
Very detailed video thanks. Any word if it will have a multi preview feature?
ronnyg1dc thanks 😊 At this price point, it is unlikely that BM will be able to bring a Multiview to the unit as I believe it will require hardware and not just software upgrade.
@@AlexPettitt thanks for the reply. Dang don't want to pay 400.00 more for just that one feature. Still you can preview each camera before making it live correct?
@@ronnyg1dc Yes, you can preview each camera before making it live.
Peter
ronnyg1dc It doesn’t appear to have separate preview and program buss monitoring.
Thanks for making this video! Totally buying one of these. 😍
Glad it was helpful Victor :)
Hey man, great video...Can we record the video directly into a 3rd part field monitor? do you recommend any good budget field monitors?
Great video Alex! Very helpful. I wanted to know if you can change the size of the picture in picture to allow for presentation material to be show on half of the screen and the next half can allow for the multiple camera angles?
Sadly you can resize only 1 source.
Peter
Meetupvideo United Kingdom ok thanks. Do you know if obs can help to bridge the gap?
@@mccleish Because I've wirecast I don't know the exact answer for OBS related things. But, in this case use the ATEM only for camera source switching and in OBS add another capture card for screen source. I bet you can resize and mix them in OBS.
@@MeetupvideoUK Thanks for your feedback! Purchasing a capture card such as the Blackmagic mini recorder for setup should work? Do you have a sample of the layout?
Which GoPro are you using? Do you need adapters when plugging up a GoPro Hero via the HDMI inputs?
HI Alex I love the videos. I am working on a set up for our church and as it only have one HDMI out I was hoping to use a video splitter to send the signal to monitor and then off to TV's in other parts of the building. I have purchased a cheap HDMI splitter but when I plug it into HDMI output and then take one of the signal from the splitter to monitor it now longer can see the HDMI output. Any thoughts? Is the problem with the splitter or the way the HDMI output works? Have you successfully used a splitter with this product?

I was wondering: is it possible to control the macros of the ATEM Mini through a Streamdeck? I just got the Elgato, but I couldn’t find a way to do that...

Funnt question, how did you rig up the gopro? Any decimator? Constant power or battery?
Hi Alex, I work for a small charity and we have had to change the way we support our clients, due to COVID restrictions. We have started using MS Teams and are doing some meetings and training on line now, but are seeing the limitations. I came across your channel and demos of this interesting kit. I have a few questions:
1. Is there much training needed to get familiar with this kit?
2. We are considering kitting out a small webinar suite for course delivery and live events - could you recommend a list of equipGabment that would suit this task?
Thanks -
Can you bind a macro to an Atem unit button so you don't have to have a screen dedicated to showing the software controller up all the time?

Yes to confirm this IS possible! Please check my channel for my initial ATEM Mini hand on review, and you will see I mention it in there 👍
Thanks for your video!
Thanks for the video... I'm wanting to live stream and record but having problems with OBS. Is the BlackMagic Video Assist a possible solution?
Hi thank you very much for your video: Can you stream simultaneously 2 different hdmi audio input? I mean .. if you have 2 microphones connected to 2 different cameras with their audiovideo signals into HDMI inputs, Can you keep both audio signals while switching only video?
Yes absolutely. The audio doesnt have to follow video... I can remain no matter what camera you cut to

Q: Is it possible to use the USB-C as a program out via a usb-c to HDMI adapter and use the HDMI out as a preview? (I mean USB-C program out to a projector or TV, btw)
I specifically want to know if this can be done WITHOUT the addition of a computer, just from the switcher. Thanks.
Hey Audiomajik, really good question! It isn't something I have tested, and I'm almost sure this wouldn't be possible but it's a cool idea! I'll try and test it and get back to you!
Hi @Audiomajik ! Tested. Not working. :(

@@AlexPettitt you can adjust audio/video delay via the software in the audio panel to sync them up.

Very, very helpful with the chroma, made my day! :)
Is there a chance to put some network source in? Some webcams from an other place?
Alex, one thing that isn't clear to me as I try again to get it working. If my chroma is on Camera 1, and I want the background to be the image in the media player, how do I get the image to show? Can you walk me through that part? When I hit On Air, I get more of a pale blue color and not the background image.
Can I send the signal to multiple TV screen around different rooms ???
