  • I'm repainting (yes, REpainting) my kitchen cabinets after only three years. See what I did wrong the first time around, and what I'm doing now to ensure a durable, long-lasting finish.
    I wouldn't have even attempted this project without my trusted Dewalt palm sander:

    I did want to say that the Zinsser BIN product that you showed was the ADVANCED. There's a BIN and a BIN Advanced and the Advanced formula is **synthetic shellac** and not the one rated the highest at locking in wood tanins (the browns that seep through, especially on knots). I've unfortunately run into this mistake myself when I used BIN Advanced on my cabinets and saw seepage a day after painting and had to look up to see if the formula had changed.
    Get the regular BIN, folks!

    I’m in the middle of painting my cabinets too. Wow….such a big job. I have about 40 doors and drawers which is a lot of work. I’ll be sure to allow them to dry for a good 2 weeks before reattaching them. 🎉

  • @alanthomasgramont

    I started trying to do something like this in my kitchen, but ended up redoing my kitchen about 4 times in parts to find what really worked for me. Thankfully I tested parts before actually painting everything and having to actually redo everything. Like, I painted a door and left it overnight before doing anything else. My steps for the finally process I went with are:
    1. sand everything down to the bone. I used 150 git sandpaper. This was a lot of work but vital
    2. Prine everything. I used a primer made for cabinets, but almost any primer will do I think
    3. Spray the cabinet doors. Honestly, I was afraid to do this and it cost me many cycles before I gave up and did this. I picked up an airless sprayers for about $250 (don't go cheap on this. get a solid one), and a spray tent for about $40 off Amazon. Seriously, spray your doors! It takes time, but you'll have your cabinets for a decade at least. Also, use a good paint. I used Emerald Enamel from Sherwinn Williams. Its expensive (about $70 a gallon), but you get what you way for. Also spraying wastes a lot of paint. If you want to spend $350 on a kitchen paint job, expect a $350 kitchen.
    4. Prepare your kitchen to be painted. Cover everything. I used a thick paper to cover the floors even. The paper costs $40 for my entire kitchen an I have a ton left over. I didn't tape the insides of the cabinets, just pulled everything out and did a tape around the inside edge to keep paint from bleeding into the cabinets. I covered sockets, etc to keep dust out. I pulled out my fridge and over so I didn't accidentally get paint directly on them.
    5. paint the frames with a brush after you prime them. Get several brushes, and make sure the brush is smaller than the frame your painting. Expect to do about 4 coats on your frames. The first two are just coverage. Then do a third topcoat. Sand between every coat! Do a 4th coat on sections you mess up. If you're using Enamel, even your top coat needs to be a little thick. Here I added M1 extender to the paint to allow the paint to level out on its own and pretty much eliminated all brush strokes. If you run your hand over it, sometimes you can feel a little wave, but its not noticeable unless you really look.
    6. Finally, for enamel using a satin or semi gloss, use a 400 git or more sandpaper and barely rub over the surface to "shine" it. It takes away any "Chalky" feel to make it feel like glass. I do mean barely. You don;t need this unless you want it to feel like glass all over. I did. But be careful. If you press hard you'll wipe away the gloss and end up having to redo it (thus the 4th coat)
    My kitchen cost me about $900 to do, including all the paint, sprayer, etc. But it looks the closest I could get to a professional paint job.

    • @alanthomasgramont
      @alanthomasgramont Год назад

      @@inna1633 assuming it’s real wood, you should have no issues stripping them down and restraining. In general you’ll need new hinges and hardware. If the sides of your cabinets are not real wood, you could just glue and finish nail a think wood to cover it and stain that wood, or Prime the sides and put a roll of lament wood over it (like it probably was originally). Assuming you have an average kitchen, the process will probably take you 3 weeks if you’re a beginner. Of course, take all the doors off and scrap/stain them separately. Use the orange stain remover. It will take about 4 applications to remove all the stain. I did this to bathroom cabinets many times. Just remember to put the stain on light and wipe it thoroughly and I would recommend a satin sealer over a gloss one. If you want to get fancy, pick up a sprayer to do this. They run about $300 but will make your seal coat way better.

    You did a wonderful job and used both my favorite primer and paint. ( I built a drop zone for my daughter and used the same paint combo, no scratches in 2 years ). My daughter and husband relocated near me about a month ago. Her house is relatively new and beautiful. The only thing she hates is her kitchen cabinet color, yellow-white. A pro gave her the price of 3000.00 to repaint and said it would take two days. I'm afraid he's going to just clean the cabinets and then spray them without priming, a real no-no according to paint manufacturers I have spoken with. Anyway, you are a very talented lady and you should use some of that 2800.00 you saved to get the appliances you want!

    • @ChickFixUSA
      @ChickFixUSA  3 года назад +2

      2 days???? Sounds like a sheister to me! The price tag is in line with what I've heard it costs to have them done someone else, but never in two days. They wouldn't even be dry enough in 2 days, if you were to put as many coats on as you should.

    You are so enjoyable to watch. This was informative. I just did my cabinets and didn't think about those little silicon dots that should go at the back of them. Gotta get myself some of those to make it even more polished! Also, I didn't take all of my hardware off, I just took the doors off so that the hardware could stay in place and I didn't have to worry about matching hinges. It means I used a brush just around that part of the frame, but rehanging was a breeze 🙂

    I’ve painted a lot of cabinets (both kitchen and bath) the easiest and longest lasting solution was “patio paint” it’s a craft paint sold at Michael’s in 2oz or 8 oz bottles in about 20 colors, in a very matte finish. It’s super pricey but goes far. Sand surfaces, clean, no primer, RUB patio paint into surface, 2 coats is enough coverage usually, keep extra on hand for occasional touch ups (because of matte finish touch ups are seamless - just dab a bit on and like new)

  • @mwrcrft

    I am sure by now someone has mentioned that your hinges have different overlay distances depending on the type of cabinet, the overlay is the amount of cabinet door stile that hangs past your cabinet stile. Ie a cabinet door is 25 1/4 wide and cabinet opening is 24 wide your hinges need to be 5/8 overlay to cover the overlay on each side to balance out the door to opening . Anyway watched all three of the cabinet door videos and really enjoyed them. Good stuff

      @krickette5569 3 года назад

      @@ChickFixUSA I left my cupboard doors attached to their cupboards when I sprayed. I just made sure to keep the sprayer far enough away to not have drips. I did a light coat of paint and then went back for a second coat. On both coats of paint I had the doors opened slightly so there would be no spaces without the paint. I did the uppers in an almost white grey color and the lowers about 3 shades darker. After they were dry I painted the interior of my cabinets a cheerful turquoise color. I love opening the cabinet doors and seeing that color. I did a whole kitchen remodel when I did the cabinets. It's a basement kitchen and the walls are cement block. I bought red brick wall board at HD and hung it, I even installed it as my backsplash, and then I did a light German Schmear on them to make them look old. I've had family members who have been here many times before look at my walls and tell me they never knew this house was built of bricks. Best feeling ever!
