It blows my mind that when the lower floors were flooded, you still had electricity in the building. Man, that is some quality infrastructure.
I work for metronet fiber and I can say that it’s very handy for not only speeds but when you call in we can see the signal level and have control with rebooting and seeing what exactly is wrong if you have an issue. In my opinion working with fiber and hearing feedback from customers with our service fiber is the way to go and if you call in we take care of the issue 93% of the time
Your download speed is LITERALLY 500x faster than mine.

100% with you on the gateway thing. Although I'm sure the ISP provided equipment can supply the speeds on the contract. At least you can put your own router in DMZ if you can't set the gateway to bridged mode and have to deal with double NAT.

Interesting video! I have an important question I'd like to ask which I have been curious to know for some time. Does a pure fibre connection sort out multiplayer latency with faraway countries? For example playing a game like FIFA UK or US vs Australia is associated with serious latency delay where after you press the button the ball is passed 2-5 seconds later. This is extremely frustrating to the point where I have to avoid being matched up with people from Australia, New Zealand, India, etc as the online gameplay experience is totally unplayable.
Now the question is if I had a pure Fibre to the premises connection and the opponent from Australia/New Zealand also had a pure Fibre connection, will this solve or improve the latency/lag issue online with these players so the online gameplay experience was smooth as if you were playing in the same continent? Or is the technology still not advanced enough to face such players online from faraway countries? If fibre broadband does not solve the latency issue in multiplayer online then I would have less regrets about not having it yet!
Matchmaking is determined by the game server algorithm not the type if internet you have. The servers usually look at your geographical location based on your IP when matchmaking. If both you and your friend had pure fiber it's possible the latency would be lower but there would definitly still be higher than desired latency
I have AT&T Internet, fiber optic and it’s a really good experience. The last time I had Internet in my name before 2020 was with Frontier from 2016-2018 and that was 5 Mbps. I could barely play any games a lot of times on my PS4, then for a couple of years when there was someone’s house I was living at that one was 40 Mbps through U-Verse, good but not great. The 1000 Mbps has made such a huge difference for me especially since I have multiple devices connected to it although most of it not simultaneously. My phone, tablet, PS4, PS5, and security cameras all work well within the system just fine. Of course it helps that I live by myself too but still, fiber Internet is definitely the way to go if you can afford it.
It depends on the game. From the time I joined Verizon Fios when I play BO2, mw3 or bo1 my bullets hit so hard. I can hear other players say "this guy eats bullets and doesn't die". I can tell the difference for sure. In newer games like bo3, bo4 I don't notice any difference at all.
The thing i found is some providers might have the same speeds as others but the ping might be worse , the ping is vital that its the best it can be for online gaming as the actual data that is transferred between games is not that much at all so a relatively cheap dsl package that has decent ping is all you need of course that's where you need to do your homework and know what your provider is actually providing.
Yeah, that is true I always had very decent pings with comcast
Hey John what’s the best kind of router to use when you have multiple systems in your home playing the same game
I rely on good packet trace routs for the game I play and I currently have Comcast’s 1,000 Mbps down and 30 up and it’s not all that different from the 350 down and 15 up. Granted I believe it’s still cooper-based. Now AT&T’s 1 gig up and down via fiber was pretty much the best love of my life. Until one of their trunk lines ate it. Then I cried.
I used to have Comcast too until I discovered, after upgrading some network equipment, that their connection was bottlenecking my network...
I was getting some terrible bufferbloat and I didn’t have a good QOS in place. Which, you don’t actually need on a gigabit fiber since it’s highly unlikely you will be saturating that connection so you aren’t really losing anything much. I find QOS to hurt my throughput more often then it helps. I get consistent 900-950Mbps upstream and down with it off but will dip into the 800’s with it on.
Also, I advise against using upnp, it’s convenient but at the cost of network security... Port forwarding would or even triggering would be a better choice. Still not secure, but less vulnerable than upnp... The best way, if you can afford it, would be to invest in an extra router and switch and isolate them on separate VLAN from any important devices.
As for the “required” gateway issue, that one was pretty trivial to sort out... I’ll send you a message about that one if you’d still like to use your own router... 😏
I dont know man, but from my experience everytime I've upgraded speed wise my ping has gone down. Maybe it's because they upgraded the equipment at the same time. My isp sends fiber to the node and then copper from the node to house. They call it a hybrid internet. It has been very reliable, not much to complain about. Soon though another company will be installing fiber in my area so I'm very anxious to try it out. Also it seems that my overall performance in multiplayer games have gotten significantly better with each increase in internet speed. With that being said I live out in the sticks far away from any servers so if I can get an internet speed that shortens the time it takes to send information to those servers then sign me up. In my opinion faster is always better as long as quality is there to.
Dang spent so much on the internet, he can only afford them cheap tables

Hey a heads up
Your OS and network card need to be compatible with gigabit speeds
You need a good cable
Use that quantum router they offer
Make sure you actually do router set up to optimize
Use 5ghz bands for priority devices
If possible, try manual prioritization or using DMZ

Internet speed doesn’t matter for gaming. ISPs say that just to make the sale. Gaming hardly uses any data so as long as you have at least a consistent 10+mbps you won’t notice much of an improvement. You will want more bandwidth if you have other people doing other things on the internet at the same time as you. Ping is your best friend for gaming and you can’t pay for a better ping. Ping varies based on location, ISP, equipment used, etc. nothing really in your control.
Internet speeds of 1Gbps is good for downloading or uploading large files very fast. It can download a game fast, but if the game is already installed on your computer you aren’t going to get any different of an experience. It’s also good if you want 200 people on your network to be able to stream Netflix at the same time. I can’t see any reason to have 1Gbps in a home unless you are really impatient and need to download a 4GB file in 4 minutes instead of 30 minutes everyone now and then.
Yup
You're right, but most people generally want higher speeds just for consistency.
You’ve obviously never played games competitively
@@SirTazTTV Hes right in some way. Ping is all that matters. Higher speeds is just for more consistency.
Sir Taz I do play games competitively. I am also an IT professional. Ping is has the greater effect on your gaming experience. Download/Upload speed has a minimal effect on gaming. Yes you will want a slightly faster speed than you need for a consistency cushion to leave enough bandwidth available to whatever other people or devices are using your network, but that doesn’t mean you will need 1Gbps. 50-100Mbps is a good cushion range for most families. If you live alone and just use a LAN cable 20Mbps is the most you will need for consistency in gaming assuming you don’t have a bunch of IoT devices on your network and aren’t trying to stream video at the same time . There are many variables and every household is different, but if you lived alone and your PC was the only thing using internet you could actually game just fine with a consistent 5-10Mbps. The only reason you need higher speeds is to allow background internet using processes on your PC and/or people and IoT devices on your network to do what they need to without taking away from the bandwidth you need.
Most people I know that have internet issues this is their main problem. Every ISP I’ve had they have had consistent speeds almost exact to what I am paying for. The router/modems they provide have terrible WiFi though and that is what most people overlook. I have friends who have paid for 20-100Mbps internet and only use the ISP provided router and complain they only get 2-5Mbps. It is because they are using the crappy built-in single-band WiFi on the router and a family of 4-6 people are all trying to use it at the same time at different edges of the house. However when I plugged my laptop into their router’s Ethernet port I always got the exact speed they were paying for. I know Ethernet cables don’t work for everyone based on router location and computer location, but you can still get a fast wireless network working with a decent tri-band router.
I have a family of 4 and we currently have 60Mbps. I can game with 19ms ping on Overwatch with zero interruptions while my wife is watching RUclips on her phone and my son is watching shows on Netflix on our TV. I could probably live with 40Mbps for my family’s usage, but 60Mbps is the lowest option my ISP has. 1Gbps is a huge cushion that most households will never need unless you have 100 kids watching HD cat videos at the same time.
That feel when I have to pay 120 for only internet at 25mbps. Com south RIP off

Glasscock so after continuing to watch your vids, I am pretty certain that my distance to travel is pretty solid, and my lines are pretty solid. The bufferbloat however is absolute turds. Due to not having qos settings in my router and the frustration with customer service, I’m considering the N600. Or am I stuck with the gateway?:/ if so any qos software? Thanks for the help bro
I would only recommend getting an N600 or something like that if you have slow speeds. Check out my recent gaming network setup vid
In my opinion there is a bit of an advantage with fiber compared to cable. It’s a bit subtle and I’m not confident it’s not a placebo thing but I’m pretty sure the shot s registration feels more smooth and consistent. I especially notice it with csgo other games not really so much. I had an internet a cable internet provider called NewWave, KT was 200 up and like 30 down and only had like 2 or 3 days in 4 years without service so I was very satisfied with their service. I’d still prefer fiber just because of ping advantage.
Bro ur not wrong
To me ping and packet loss are much more important than bandwidth. 100 mbps is honestly enough for anything, most servers won't even let you transfer 1 gigabit nor would it make a difference if they did. But 0% packet loss and a tiny ping make things feel so much faster and snappier... and that is why fiber is best.
You can’t connect your night hawk to Fiber? Ugh gonna get it when I move cuz spectrum is garbage and I have a ac5300 x8 😩
You can but it's hard to do without causing issues. There are work arounds but they are complex. Check out my gaming setup video to see how I have my equipment set up
Glasscock thanks brotha, keep up the vids very informative 🙏🏼
You have to put your router in DMZ mode on the fiber modem/router combo.
@@TheDebo7291986 it's not a perfect work around but it works for most things
You should look at century link there TRASH.
Hey bro, great video, just a tip, put the gateway in Bridge mode (will make the gateway work as modem only) and keep your personal router in "router" mode, you should be fine....
There is no true bridge mode within at&t gateway. DMZ will still result in double nat. The only real way to get an actual bridged connection with at&t requires you to do a complex setup to trick at&t authentication while using your own router. I've looked into it but it's not worth my time. I'm actually very happy with how my network is currently set up
wow thats shitty... I have xfinity (Comcast) myself, the gateway is pretty good... Thank you for the reply. Great info. I have a few friends with AT&T... this info will come in handy
No, do it the other way around. At&t router in router mode, your extra router in bridge mode
I recently just got my gigabit service and I'm loving it cause before I had DSL internet which was really a pain. Only running at 7 down and 1 up was a nightmare and now I got 1000 up and down it really made a big difference.
I'm glad to hear that
I am one of 285.000 people living in my city who have pay an insane amount of money for 4G internet in order to get better speeds than crappy cable speeds, and trust me, it is really frustrating. For some reason even newer buildings like the one I live in which was built in 2009 there is no chance to get fiber internet. If you want faster internet than your DSL, VDSL line offers than your only option is 4G, if you're lucky you're one of the very few people who live in a part of town where there's LTE-Advanced, in addition to that, 4G speeds heavily depend on which floor you live in. I for example live in the middle floor which is basically the worst, I have to place my router right next to the window in order to get full 4G signal strenght even though according to my provider there's 4G+ all over the place I've only seen the router switch to that once and that was when I had it on my balcony. But hey 4G speeds aren't bad, you can get up to 150Mbit in theory, at least that's why I pay 45€ (50USD) per month. Can you guess how fast the internet really is (my PC is directly gonnected with the 1gigabit ethernet port of the router)? Exactly, I have never ever seen it reach 150mbit download per second. I sometimes test the speed when I'm bored and here's what I can report: During the day, I only get about 50 Mbit average. That's a third of what I'm paying for. The fastest I've ever seen it reach in the afternoon was when I used a MIMO 2X 4G Antenna basically line of sight to the next 4G station and I only reached 100Mbit, but after using it for several days I noticed that the average speed was about 80, basically half of what I'm paying for. Without the external antenna, using only the 4G routers internal antennas I once reached 65Mbit and that was because it was 4am where basically nobody uses 4G. You might ask yourself now: "dude why doesn't he talk to the provider about it?". No chance, the provider doesn't give a shit because somewhere in the contract they say that the speed you're paying for is the ideal speed and it can be different depending on your location. Yeah thanks, I live 400m from the next 4G sending station away. According to the contract the speed can drop down to something like 30Mbit, which is a fith of the speed I'm paying for and it would still be accaptable according to them. Somethign else I love about the 4G internet story in my country is that we're in the middle of europe, not at the edge of the world. Oh and they force us to buy a overpriced locked router when signing the contract, a contract which lasts for 24 months, with a 4G router which is decent, but you would save about 200 bucks if you had the chance to say no to a device. I would happily chose a better router instead of being forced to buying one. Well that's my internet story, can't wait for 5G, it will probably take ages until we get it, since I lost hope in the country providing fiber internet. For now I have 12 months left until I can get out of my 50 dollar 150mbit contract which only provides me with a third, maybe two fith if I'm lucky of the speed.

I live in a rural area, surprisingly enough there is a buissness about a half mile down the road that (I beleive) has fiber internet, right now im using a hotspot through Verizon to play xbox, I'm lucky to see 7mbps download on a good day.
My question to you, would it be worth me paying to have the provider run the fiber to me .5 miles down the road? I have no idea what this would cost but living with basically no internet has killed me. I beleive they could tie into the fiber leading to this buissness?
Also, is the speed of fiber that high, as mentioned in the video, no matter the location? Basically if I spend all the money I think i'm going to spend getting the internet here, will the speed be good for gaming still?

I live in a mountain town and am straight up convinced that the path up the canyon is badly made, because pinging Denver which is about 40 miles is 22-25ms. I imagine there's some packet loss that adds to the issues as it goes beyond that too.
I hope that living in Longmont with fiber internet will cut ping by roughly 30ms for most servers. Or I guess if I had gigabit fiber I could run a server if I was willing to pay $10 a month in electricity.
I have 3 smart tv , 4 alexas, 2 consoles , 2 laptops , 2 phones , 4 iPads , 10 Arlo cameras . 80% of this is mostly connected to the internet and working. The biggest advantage to fiber in gaming is the ping. It will be slightly less compared to other circuits

PING is what your looking for, not more bandwidth
Kawoaa when you get about 3mbps down sure tell yourself that kid . Takes about 8 days to download a game another 6 days just download all the updates . I get 30ping at this point I could give two shits about ping give me the fastest bandwidth possible so I can download single player games and programs
YourMomDotCom19 try sharing 3mbps with 3 people my ping is 30ping which is amazing for gaming but once they get on the internet there goes the bandwidth 30 ping will shoot up to 100-1000ping . What I need is faster download speed so I can share the bandwidth

5mb down 0.5mb up 😂
You can change that gateway into passthrough mode where it'll allow you to plug in your own router and use your own router instead... Not too hard to do either
Pretty good video love ur channel m8. I got fiber internet myself 100/100 mbit but i don't need a gateway because i just got a switch in my room which converts the signal and then you can use your own equipment. There is one wan port for internet, phone and tv but i just use the internet service. Then im in an open fiber network where you can switch isp depending which you like the most so you arent't locked to just one big isp. I live in Sweden btw on the countryside and pay only 35 euros for 100/100 mbit and free vpn. Very satisfied i get about 20 ms ping in most games. And i got the d link exo 2600 gaming router which is pretty good too! Keep up the good work!
That is how all fiber connections should be it's a shame ISPs want to lock everyone down on gateway connections
got att fiber, 1gb up & 1gb down @ $70 a month.
Very nice
quite expensive
@@pow_ext for the USA that is not expensive at all. 3 years ago I was paying $125 per month with Xfinity for 105mbps download
yeah i was comparing the price internationally, here in Italy the cheapest plan costs 20 euros per month
i know some people still $60 a month for 6mb up/down so i will gladly pay $70 a month for 1gb up/down and fiber too. here i. the US we have some of the poorest choices for broadband, especially depending on where you live. i live out in a county / rural area and consider myself lucky for my broadband options cause just about 5 miles down the road your options are very limited.
He be having 0ping while I'm using Plusnet..
Just joking I don't use Plusnet
I use Lycamobile
you can probably make that gateway thing just pass the internet signal through to your other router. it would be in the settings somewhere.. No idea what it is called but I did it years ago on a cable modem/router
Here in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I pay $75 per month for 1 Gig up/down. We do not need a gateway either.
Speed has nothing to do with online gaming❗ Latency / ping count in online gaming❗
People are dumb and don't listen
Well you're right and you're wrong. Latency is the most important thing in gaming but if you have really weak Upload/Download, and other people are connected to Wi-Fi using the bandwidth(watching Netflix/RUclips) then that will ultimately affect your ping... making it spike very high.
Conclusion. Low download/upload = high ping when others are using bandwidth, but higher upload/download won't necessarily increase your ping, just make it more stable when others are using internet cos more bandwidth.
your ping is partially based on how fast your internet can upload information to the gaming server.... so yes, it has a lot to do with gaming.
Do i really need 1gps for gaming?? I see many fortnite pro streamer complain about their ping. And alots of them says 0 ping makes its easier to build wall faster?? Does higher ping means better gaming??
Is that available in India?
I don't know if india has fiber internet. I dont live in india
TIME WALKER Yes, it’s available. 100mb both download and upload
@@JohnGlasscock jio Giga fiber is there
Comcast gigabit let me use existing equipment which was awesome
Interesting, i had ATT Fiber installed Dec 2019. My ONT is installed inside of the house. We have that black gateway as well but the tech that installed the service patched my router into the gateway. So i still get to use my router. You may be able to use your router now.
But you are still using the gateway right? Don't you have to set up your router so that it connects to the gateway? How did the installer do it?
Grand Master Mawile yeah I’m still using the gateway. He just patched my router into one of the ports 1-4 on the gateway. The router grabbed a DHCP address and just worked from there.
Is AT&T 1000/1000?
Yes
@@JohnGlasscock how much a month?
Hey how much is it
@@modelotime3608 $80 if its available in your area
Watching this video at 144p and laging
You can use your own router. Tell them you want to swap out to the Arris BGW210 gateway. It has an IP passthru feature, which can be set to the MAC of your own routers WAN port. If your routers LAN IP is 192.168.1.1 you will need to change it to 192.168.2.1 to avoid conflicts. Disable the 2.4g and 5g WiFi radios on the BGW. From there your routers WAN port will get handed your Internet IP address and it works just like the Ethernet port on a cable modem, UPnP, incoming traffic, etc all work just like the ATT gateway device isn't even there.
I should have watched this beforehand. As you said you get 100-300 when downloading games. I wish you would say this during the videos that you create because its still kinda misleading but im glad you're heavily informed on networking. Why do you think that is though even with a wired connection? I get that through the 5 ghz you're going to get around 300-400 because of the limitations of that band and being a wireless signal. I am a Junior in college studying computer engineering so Im pretty informed on networking. I have gigabit internet in Dallas but I just honestly dont get why they even really offer it if the majority of devices cannot handle those speeds like the ps4 and xbox one. They can handle near gigabit speeds on speed tests but applying it to anything you get no where near the actual speed... When downloading games I find both consoles are limited to around 300 mbps. Idk if its because they dont have a gigabit ethernet port on the back or not but its super frustrating having that good of internet and still having to wait forever for massive games to download
Just saw your comment. Thanks for your thoughts. The reason you will usually only see 3-400mbps when downloading from psn and xbox is for several reasons. #1 is the distance between you and the server. The more hops and routes between you and the server you're downloading from, the more diluted the actual throughput becomes. You seem like you will understand what I mean without any further explanation #2 is that the consoles are not designed to write to the HDD at 1000mbps. The internet is overkill for what the console itself can actually handle. There are other factors as well but those are the two biggest
Ok, I am from Iowa and currently have a 3mb dsl connection. It’s the most we can get through dsl. We are planning to get cables to our house and get the 60mb plan. Anything better than 70 ping and 3mb/s I would love. Can someone inform me about the ping and problems with mediacom at the moment? I was getting really exited but then saw lots of reviews about how mediacom is shit. Can someone fill me in because I’m getting mixed inputs about mediacom.
In Spain only one or two ISPs use cable and the rest of them use fiber, even for 30 Mbps. I love my fiber 300 Mbps internet because the latency doesn't exist (or almost) and the speeds are symetrical (same for download and upload).
Frontier and Verizon FiOS don't require the use of their gateway. Of course, they won't support you if you use your own equipment, but it will work perfectly well if you plug your own router into their ONT.
If you’re not a fan of the gate way, log into the IP and put it in bridge mode so you can use your own modem.
Yea I’m definitely switching to fiber internet tmr. My current ISP is optimum and they had a “network outage” in my area for 8 days now, and counting (I’m using data to type dis)... Like bruh the service is so unreliable, and how long does it take for a big company like optimum to fix a network outage for their customers?!?! Don’t they wanna keep their customers? This action from them just made them lose a customer.
They use a gateway because it's a one-size-fits-all type of thing. We used to set it up with just the modem and the cost of the router would be on the customer, but they simplified it. You can set up a secondary router, just set your extra router up as a bridge and not a master. Custom settings can be input into the router(at&t) via 192.168.1.254 which is on the side of the gateway. ~ AT&T technician
Yeah I've looked into it and tried it, wasn't a fan. DMZ Plus is not a true bridge mode. I had IPV6 and speed issues while using it. It will work perfect for most people but it wasn't for me. I hope someday At&t atleast offers an ONT that doesnt require a gateway with special authentication. Even if it meant paying more per month I'd be glad
Hopefully I’m getting fiber soon.
It would make a huge difference if you played games that require precise inputs like fighting games.
Are you referencing fiber internet to ziply fiber? Because I get very bad lag spikes in every game to the point where I can't move and can't do anything. I don't know if it's just me
What provider do you use, and how much did you pay to get it setup?
I’m in Houston too so you got a new sub
I mentioned it all in the video its at&t
Whatt you’re in Texas !?!? I’m in Houston lol yeah att is amazing. I love it. I just moved to a new apartment and had to get xfinity. I’m in a 1000mpbs plan with Blast speed. Idk how I feel about it. My ping is 45-55. Latency is about 48.
I had comcast for years with no problems. Been in houston for over 10 years
Im 5 years late but everyone i just want u to all know the internet john is on is not a residential connection its a dia connection this means basically that its direct internet access and its dedicated this is why he can run around and gun down other players with little to no lag something people dont understand is that when your on a residential connection your connection is shared between u and ur neighborhood this means that the reliability rate is about 10% main while john on a dedicated business connection has about 100% reliability i just want to point this out as it was never talked about in the video alot of RUclipsrs are using this knowledge to gain a advantage on other players in games and it should be talked about thanks for your time fellow gamers and stay safe and aware out there
Now just to understand the gratitude of this incase people dont know what i mean when i say reliability rate it means how often u get hit markers when u shoot a enemy target theres three ways u can test your internet to see if its a shared connection number1: if you do a speed test and you see u have a bunch of random jitter u cant explain like you tried reducing your upload and so on. But the upload or download jitter is extremely high then this means your on a shared residential connection/number2: another way u can tell if your on shared residential connection is if you play any game and notice u have horrible hit reg issues and terrible desync from the server like its impossible to play the game even with a low ping/ and finally number3 your download speeds and upload speeds you never get the full amount your paying for and your download speeds randomly plummet at certain times of the day all of these are vaild reason and just know you dont suck at games people like john are just cheating you im not mad at John im not everything he says in his videos are mostly true but this is the only thing him and most youtubers arent honest about and it needs to be brought to light we love u john but u gotta start being honest about this connection stuff ok seriously ur hurting peoples lives not giving them this valuable information ive had friends commit suicide being bullied so bad because their connection wouldnt let them play at their full potential and they didnt know that it was because they were on a shared connection ive had friends who wanted to become pro league but youtubers are too afraid to give up their spot as number one so they keep this knowledge from people another thing and i guess u could say this is number 4 i forgot to mention this but if you cant foward ports thats another sign the thing about a residential connection is everyone behind a cg nat a cg nat is a bigger router thats over your router and everyone elses that u all connect to and as john has mentioned in his other videos buffer bloat is a serious problem so what do you think would happen when you have the whole neighborhood on one router
