Buy special high gain antenna for your router which gets the internet from your neighbours. Better signal=better speed. I assume that Wi-Fi signal quality from your neighbour is a limiting factor. Or just don't steal and order your own high speed, reliable and secure internet connection. You probably connected to unprotected neighbours Wi-Fi (without a password) and you must use VPN if you want to be secure and private.

It was free with the apartment through a wireless router built into the wall, above a power outlet with an RJ45 socket between them. 10 gigabit was the best you could get but it was only through a paid service and required installation of fiber optics which costs a lot. I was happy to leave a 100gbyte download running while I went out shopping.

If you want higher you'll have to go with satellite that comes with 700+ms latency(ping) usually more like 1000ms. Oh and they all come with caps up to 50gbs of data. If you want no caps you will definitely be paying $120+ monthly. Its crazy to hear that people in EU have no caps and 1gb/s for like less than a quarter of the price.

I still remember 10 years ago when I couldn't afford to have internet brought to my parents' home too so when I was there I would use an usb flash drive that had been given to my mother by her employer. This usb thumb drive would allow my laptop to have a stable 124 kbps (not Mbit !!) internet speed that was not enough to play any video on RUclips or anywhere else BUT it WAS enough to play world of warcraft without any latency as long as I don't go into a 25men raid or a 40 men battleground - i.e. solo and smaller groups. I used it for more than an year and it was a life savior.

Its true: Gaming doesn't need a high bandwidth, but not having a high bandwidth can become problematic if you are running servers or have other people using the same internet as you. If you bump against the bandwidth ceiling, you will introduce artificial latency and dropped packets. If you want to avoid those lag spikes and high latency that appear randomly when room mates are in the other room kicking off a large download, you need to make sure that you have plenty of bandwidth for both of you. You can play video games just fine on a 10Mbps connection, until someone tries to Facetime their grandma.

I don’t live alone either, so anytime someone wants to use the internet, we have to negotiate a time because only one person can use the wifi at a time. I pay way more for my phones data plan because it’s incredibly fast compared to my home wifi and I don’t have to worry about low bandwidth. I can barely play online games, and it’s usually only reliable during off peak hours.

Although bandwidth isn't super important when playing online games, it is important when downloading games, or anything for that matter. For activities like web browsing, video streaming, or gaming, data usage is relatively consistent. But when downloading files, your computer will try to pull data down as fast as the internet connection will allow. So higher bandwidth will always mean faster download speeds. For example, a 100mbps connection will download a 2 GB file in 1m40s, although it will generally be longer because the bandwidth will be shared between devices and you likely will experience some slowdowns. Wheras a 1gbps connection will download the same file in 16 seconds, with the same caveats.

10 dollars for 1 Gigabit? Are you sure? Your VAT rates are highest in whole EU (27%) and you can get that speed for so cheap? I am from Lithuania so the prices should be very similar to the ones in Hungary as both countries are very similar in economical and internet infrastructure development. You can't get 1 Gigabit for 10 dollars (or even euros) in Lithuania. In Lithuania it cost almost 20 €/month (about 15-21 €/month) for normal user. I think the wholesale price is about this much for 1 Gigabit interet. Although you can easily get 300 Mbps for 10-15 €/month in almost all places where you can get fibre.

Linus, this is one the best videos I have seen on Internet speed vs. Latency. This was a common problem when I worked for an ISP. It was fun coming up with stories to explain internet issues to customers. (:

Considering my hometown was monopolized by dsl, which charged $60/month for 10 down 1 up, I'm more than happy to pay $50/month for 100 down 10 up. As a student who lives alone it's honestly a steal and more than fast enough for just me.

100mbps is perfect and honestly can't tell the difference between 100 and the 200 we have now 99% of the time, unless I am downloading games or videos. When downloading it's twice as fast. Most of my games took like 1-2 hours (sizes are sometimes 100GB and that took 2 hours) and now it's half that. But you can never be satisfied with download times as there is always room for improvement, but for video streaming 100mbps still allows 8k HDR which is the max quality on RUclips.
