Minecraft is a power hog, in every right. I have 64GB of low latency DD4 ram, a RTX 2080 Ti, and a Ryzen 3900, and still I have to make major trade offs in the settings to get frame rates I find acceptable. FTB is even worse. Throw in some machines into your world and hit those areas and watch as the FPS nosedives. Much of it comes from the fact that modded Minecraft relies on Java, which is not nearly as optimized.
It depends on the operating system and what you use it for. In the old days I created a ram drive and loaded a particular app totally into ram and ran it from there. The performance increase was insane. But that was DOS, yes, DOS. I used that example to show that it depends on how the computer uses ram. If there is a ton of ram available then more ram can be used by any particular app. If the app always does it the same way no matter the free available ram, then that's another thing and likely the most common. So do most apps actually benefit from tons of ram? I don't really know. But I am saying that there is way more than one way to skin a ram cat. Is the trend towards flexible ram usage or towards faster, common development cycles. I imagine that there are code templates available to make them most of whatever the ram scenario is. Wouldn't that be the best? Then tons of ram would be taken the most advantage of.
Its not even that bad I think it consumes 6 gigs at max settings. Compare that to a game like black ops 3 which was release 5 years ago and can use up to 12 gigs of vram at max settings
Yeah I'd personally recommend 6GB for 1080p gaming in 2020, especially if you're looking to buy new hardware. Right now there are already several games which really struggle on 4GB at high settings on 1080p, and that's only going to get worse with new releases (especially when the new console generation comes out and cross-platform games will be able to require more memory).
wierd, COD warzone with FHD Max settings eat almost 11GB VRAM, on gtx 1080ti so i think new graphic card should get at least ~50% more than actualy it's (for high end)
@ i'm actually finding a cheaper RTX 2060 right now, it's fucking hard buying online cuz they're not risking taking cash on delivery and i don't have a credit card. Im looking at an underground seller right now cuz i can't save money after all of this cuz it might be use for an emergency.
I found my RAM cheaply enough I didn't have to worry about choosing how much I really need. I just maxed out my motherboard with 32 GB and never once regretted it. In fact I had a DeusEx game that was performing horribly when I had just 8 GB originally. It really was recommended to have 16 for that. It was very choppy and loading between levels took forever. Now with double the minimum recommended RAM it is a thing of the past! All my other requirements for the game were met except I didn't have enough RAM before that upgrade.
Really anything with modpack. Skyrim, Cities Skylines, GTA V, Kerbal Space Program, mods as a general rule take up much more ram than they should because they just aren't optimized well compared to the game itself.
Yep I did the same, and surprisingly if you leave session open after a week or two there will be so much memory leak that 32 won't be enough and it will crash. It's laughable

When it comes to RAM, I generally understand it to be:
4 GB for something like a Chromebook that's intended primarily for light web browsing, e-mail, and word processing
8 GB for a general use PC or an entry level gaming PC
16 GB for most gaming PCs beyond entry level
32 GB for a workhorse PC

'4 gigs of vram is good for 1080p gaming'
Doom eternal: allow me to introduce myself
Yup. Doom Eternal wants resources.. and delivers well with those resources.
Wasn't 4 GB vram the requirement for Wolfenstein (2014) ultra settings?
wierd, COD warzone with FHD Max settings eat almost 11GB VRAM, on gtx 1080ti
