If u wanna struggle - 4gb
What you need - 8gb
What you should have - 16gb
What you want - 32+gb
Why would you want something that you don't need?
@@ProPrince Reasonable people won't. Some of us prefer to utilise what they have, rather than to have what they cannot utilise.

Not at all true. RAM is based on what you do, not what you want or need. A lot of programs for my engineering classes will crash with under 32GB of RAM, and only run smoothly with 64GB. As for video and photo editing, things will not run smoothly without 16GB of RAM at least, and 32+ is required for complicated projects. I could go on all day but your comment is just wrong.
16 gb is enough for gaming. And if you need more you can always download more.

"Back in my day, my computer had 8 gigs of memory, and I didn't even need that much"
My grandkid: "What? I have 16 terabytes of ram on my computer, and that's not even a lot."
70? You are an optimist :) 30 years ago 16 MB was a lot and 60 years ago 16 KB would have been HUGE
I still have my first 2 flashdrives.
One is 128 MB and the other is 256 MB. lol
@Andy Young
I still have my XPS desktop with Pentium D and 1 gb of RAM. I recently bought a compatible 128 GB to back up my 120 GB HD. I'm finally retiring the desktop.
Another cool old tech I have is my Creative Zen Vision:M mp3 player which has a tiny sized 30 GB mechanical HD. I still heavily use it to this day. I just need to replace the battery at some point.
I would hope in 70 years we don't need RAM anymore. It's basically a cache component. Maybe we'll have storage devices with cache that makes RAM obsolete, or something like a RAM disk, only terabytes and petabytes, meaning RAM and "storage device" become one. You'll be telling kids they used to be two different things.
If VR gaming is going to get bigger and we transition into 4k gaming yeah definitely.

Hey, is 8GB enough for a person who works in Data Analytics?
It depends on the operating system and what you use it for. In the old days I created a ram drive and loaded a particular app totally into ram and ran it from there. The performance increase was insane. But that was DOS, yes, DOS. I used that example to show that it depends on how the computer uses ram. If there is a ton of ram available then more ram can be used by any particular app. If the app always does it the same way no matter the free available ram, then that's another thing and likely the most common. So do most apps actually benefit from tons of ram? I don't really know. But I am saying that there is way more than one way to skin a ram cat. Is the trend towards flexible ram usage or towards faster, common development cycles. I imagine that there are code templates available to make them most of whatever the ram scenario is. Wouldn't that be the best? Then tons of ram would be taken the most advantage of.

@@cuddlecreeper8 I highly doubt you see less actual ram usage from a different browser... the ram usage depends mostly on the content on the website you're browsing... Chrome might show high ram usage in task manager when it's the only thing running but that's because it holds all your tabs in ram for as long as there is free ram to do it, but it doesn't keep them in ram no matter what... it releases that ram the moment another application needs it so it doesn't actually affect anything other than making chrome more responsive up until the point you run something else at which point nothing would be responsive...
@@RWoody1995 you wanna bet on that one?

Yep. I see 52% usage of my 32GB most of the time when I'm playing SC and I know that if I only had 16GB then the system would either use the pagefile or just wouldn't allocate as much but I'd rather have the ram there available to use instead of resorting to the other lesser methods.
The most I've seen being used is 66% but that was after 8 hours of SC and it's probably down to some unoptimized memory leaks somewhere
@@Drinnan isnt ram usage based on the other componets of your pc. I highly doubt you'd go over 16 gigs of ram if you were actually using 16 gigs, I think the system just tries to use as much ram ad possible
@Pan Darius Kairos what is the point of 4k vr, it's such a small screen
Right now at least having capable CPU is more important than lot of ram, 16 GB is enough even for 1440p unless you running SC in 4k
Anonymous Boi The screen is very close to your eyes, so 4K is probably where end up with VR

@@dadjokes8963 He said VRAM
When it comes to RAM, I generally understand it to be:
4 GB for something like a Chromebook that's intended primarily for light web browsing, e-mail, and word processing
8 GB for a general use PC or an entry level gaming PC
16 GB for most gaming PCs beyond entry level
32 GB for a workhorse PC
Seems accurate for today's software.
I got 32 because VMs and VFIO.
Docker containers easily eat 20+GiB
I agree
Even 8gb is enough for gaming you may take a tiny hit to performance but not much, honestly 16gb is good for future games
Even relatively moderate cad or app development can eat up 32, 64 is much more safe for any kind of workhorse
bruh i was about to watch it but then before the video played an ad with linus popped up and i thought this was the acctual video LOL
Imporatant thing: Every time data is read from a file, it is first copied to RAM, and it is removed from RAM only when free space is needed.
this means that if you play games that load the same assets repeatedly (Total War with the campaign and battle views, Warframe with its quick missions etc) certain files might stay in RAM between the loading screens, meaning that disc gets read only once, which could be a serious performance boost for HDD users. (this effect becomes visible starting from 32 GB of RAM)
of all places to find someone talking about warframe

The answer is always mostly like depends on what you have on your pockets

When I build a gaming PC probably Q1 or Q2 next year I'm considering putting in a 16GB stick of high speed RAM to have room to upgrade. Depending on my budget I may also put in two.
You would be better off with 2x 8GB modules than 1x 16GB. If you only have one module, you lose out on dual channel memory and sacrifice 50% of your memory bandwidth.
Finally I know how much ram I need for my Christian minecraft server
16 is usually enough for gaming, until you launch Cities: Skylines 😂
For real, that's why I got 32gb... Just entering my last city gobbles up 22 of it though.
Dude the game even eats up 64 GB of RAM + 8 GB of VRAM and still only runs at 20 FPS once you modded it. A game can't be more poorly optimized
lol. Cities Skylines is actually the reason why I got pc. I thought 16 GB RAM was enough, but after I realized this game ate all of my memory. I bought more 16 GB.

I see what you did there.
Nice.
When you cough and touch hand sanitizer before and sanitize your hands after, the sanitizer itself is contaminated
Clearly the answer is to never leave your home without a full hazmat suit
Thats clickbait, too dump to ignore posting an answ..... ah crap.
You seem to forget that while this is true, you're contaminating yourself literally moments before disinfecting. You're pumping the solution into the problem.
You're an idiot
well then stay at home
everyone who subsequently touches the "contaminated" hand sanitizer is just about to save their own lives by SANITIZING THEIR HANDS..... dumbass.
The two games I play primarily are DCS and MSFS. Both of these eat tremendous amounts of memory. In DCS when I had only 16GB, a reasonably busy multiplayer server or complex mission would use all the RAM there was to use. I would experience a serious hang if someone joined the server or went Rambo on a SAM battery, sometimes causing a CTD. 32GB fixed this, and I almost always see memory utilization up into the 20s. In VRAM too, 8GB has proven to be adequate in 1080 but flat out inadequate for 4k. Without the change to go buy a 2080ti or something with more, I've had to disable all AA entirely in order to get playable frames in 4k (4k helps tremendously with spotting planes visually). Really looking forward to that sweet sweet 16GB of VRAM that comes on the new Big Navi cards.

Recently upgraded from single 8gb to 2x 8gb of ram. I think for gaming nowadays you should have at least 12 gb of ram.
Thanks Techquickie. I now know what I require for my RAM so I can game pretty easily (8GB RAM should do me fine!)
