Is Fiber Internet Really Better for Gaming?

- Gamers are passionate about their internet - I should know since I am one. Gamers say a fiber connection is the best, but is that really true?
----------
See our picks for BEST ISP's here:
www.reviews.org/internet-serv...
www.reviews.org/internet-serv...
----------
The Basics:
- DSL
-Been around the longest
-Runs along your phone line
-Basic internet users
-Primary weakness is distance.
-Cable
-Much faster than DSL
-Runs through your coax connection
-Doesn't rely on proximity for signal strength
-Weakness is the shared connection and subsequent reliability.
-Fiber
-Glass/Plastic wiring (means its REALLY fast!)
-Generally symmetrical (matching upload & download speeds)
-Attractive to gamers & twitch streamers.
But speed isn't the most important thing! Here's what is:
-Latency (ping)
-The time it takes for data to make a round trip between you and
your ISP
-LOWER IS BETTER
-This is why Satellite Internet isn't great for gaming
-Packet Loss
-Data bundles being sent back and forth between you and your
ISP
-Don't want these getting lost or corrupted
-The closer to ZERO the better
-Jitter
-The change in latency over time
So... Does speed matter for gaming? You bet, but not as much as you might think. Gaming actually doesn't require lightning speeds!
What matters more is how reliable your connection is when it comes to Latency, Packet Loss, and Jitter. Any internet connection type (DSL, Cable, Fiber) can deliver great results in those categories.
So is Fiber the best? It's newer, more reliable, and tends to deliver the best speeds, as well as Latency, Packet Loss, and Jitter. The only problem is it's REALLY expensive and not available everywhere.

Thanks Dude
bro i have spectrum right now and they hav coaxial where im at and if a bird farts on the line i lose internet connection, im goin back to fios with gigabit on monday
I agree with the bird fart part. Same here
This comment made me laugh more than it should’ve
Coax is powered by fiber and converts to coax on pole or box at your house

I also have spectrum rn and im switching to 1 gigabit soon and I can’t wait, jesus im sick of spectrum
Where are u guys located I have spectrum here in central FL... only 100 mbps y’all making me start to second guess lol

Lol
It's not that I don't want to, I only have 5 mins left on my break...

Thank you
Fiber internet is really reliable. I've had FIOS for 10 years and internet has only went down like 3 times tops. When I had Time Warner Cable before that, internet went down randomly every month.
fiber internet in and of itself isn't more reliable it is still prone to the same shortcomings that other internet technologies are prone to. For example, if there is an issue with the headend that the fiber internet gets routed to you will suffer a outtage, also in the case of residential fiber it is still shared bandwidth from a node. Believe it or not cable companies like Comcast, TIme Warner, etc actually have more Fiber deployed than a smaller provider like FIOs it is just that last mile in the home that is serviced by coxael at this point. Plus DOCIS 3.1 can support 10Gig download and 2Gb upload speed so the limitation falls back to again the headend and the node you are connecting to in terms of bandwidth.
All in all the obvious choice is Fiber to the home because it has infinite potential as far as speed and the lowest possible latency will come from fiber but the real-world results in terms of performance are not really noticeable at this point because your internet connection will only be as good as the weakest link in the infrastructure
@@dennisp8520 sooo which wifi internet provider should i go for gaming with?
@@117HALOREACH honestly it won't really matter, if you have a Fiber provider with symmetrical internet go with them, just try to get like 100/100mb if you have Comcast or Time Warner in your area they are fine choices as well. If you plan to get TV service I say go with a cable provider because they bundle much faster internet speeds with their TV offers. I personally have 1 gig internet with Comcast and have no complaints
@@dennisp8520 awesome thanks for the info 👌

Yes. Fiber to the Home is amazing for gaming.
Oh god no it isnt, the amount of lag compensation i face for having 1gbps down and up is crazy. These days the worse your connection the better you will do

FTTH IS GREAT, EVEN IN STRONG WINDS OR HEAVY DOWNPOUR!
For those out in the boonies and getting fed up with DSL; if you have a co op electic company, look into having them be your ISP. Ours is currently running fiber to 14 counties of rural customers and we're going from DSL, wireless, and satellite straight to fiber. The project is slated to take 4 years to complete but we're getting service that many don't have access to. It's not impossible, there just has to be a demand and good cost-benefit analysis. Ours won in the favor of implementation. To say I'm excited to go from paying $75 a month for ATTs table scraps of internet via 25/2 DSL to gigabit fiber is an gross understatement.
Same. I been on Centurylink 3/.45 DSL since I was in highschool. Im 28 now... My electric provider is running fiber as I speak. 1gb up and down for $80 a month. So excited...
they have att fiber all around me asked a guy in a att truck the other day hanging by the cable boxes in my part of the neighborhood how long it would be he said it shouldn’t take to long since they were putting some up the road do you have it yet it’s been 3 years?
My co-op finally completed this project. I get my internet install tomorrow!
I'll be posting a reply of the results when I test it and see how good it is than the Hotspot I used there the last 2 years!
you will see a brand new world happy for you.@@ripper00ski420

One of the advantages of fibre is you don't need a crazy high speed for a good experience, it's the upload that provides many more capabilities. A personal Nas for let's say cloud, or game streaming.
Going from DSL to frontier fiber soon. Lots of fiber construction in rural PA
You are partially right on the coax I'm a cable guy, cable also has fiber nodes that send signal out to amps then to taps and if you have a good cable provider you shouldn't have any problems like that
Preach my friend
I was a cable guy for Time Warner Cable between 94 and 2000 ...
not only that, but fiber also uses coax. In short, this video is an extreme exxaguration. Fiber is not better, its just a buzzword for millenials
@@artyomarty391 Haha. Buzzword for millenials??? WTF? You people are so angry on this site.
@@justrandomthings319 calm down, dont get angry. Fiber is a buzzword because when the conversation is about cable, everyone assumes "Fiber" is some nanotechnological advancement from space and its best for everything. Nobody knows its characteristics, or in what way it is better. or what speed it offers, or why many companies choose not to work with it. I install cable, and I see youngsters, especially IT professionals, throw this word around all the time without knowing a dam thing about it
Yes it is. Fiber Optic Internet always has far lower latency and higher speeds. I've had fiber to the home(FTTH) since at least 2014, and for online gaming, it has always been far better than cable and especially DSL. It's very reliable as long as you have good access point to support, which the newer models from Comtrend certainly do. I consistently have the lowest the ping in my lobby, and only lag if playing with a bad host. If I'm host, it never lags.
How many people can it handle at once
@@madvillain5732depends on the plan but for mine is 50 devices
since 2014 man that’s crazy considering i still don’t have it and i don’t live in no where i live in a neighborhood and everyone around me has it literally there is a church behind my neighbors house and abt 6 houses right next to it and they all have fiber abd you’ve had it for almost 10 years be lucky my friend you have a great advantage on your side
@@iamnobodyy_Oh, when studying in a different town here in Norway, back in '05/'06, I had fiber to the apartment i lived in. Back then, it was asymethrical. Then, finally fiber started to get deployed around '10/'11 in the town I was from
I wish there was a way we could do some kind of crowd funding to help ISPs achieve placing fiber everywhere. It sucks that in my area we don't have fiber available and it would be nice to have it since I have multiple servers. :/
Its called taxes, isp barely ever lay their own fiber with their own money.
Well in the UK you can do two things, one of them is called a Community Fiber partnership which is where you sign up for a Community Fiber partnership account from Openreach, and get as many people in your neighborhood as possible to sign and help fund for Fiber installs. Or you can do what is called FTTPoD, which is where you get a quote from a provider like Cerberus Networks which usually cost about £250+VAT so they can check out your street, the nearest node, your home so that then they can give you the pricing for the installation which is usually about £5,000 to £39,000, you don't have to pay it, but you can if you want to and you can then get Gigabit Fiber that way.
Yeah, I just had visionary broadband come in and destroying my lawn laying their fiberoptic line.
i wish frontier/ spectrum internet providers for tampa could make this of videos for costumers on thier own website
Residential fiber is often PON which just like cable is shared. However unlike cable, fiber is immune to interference and you can increase the capacity just by changing the devices at each end.
Everything is shared at various points in the network. For PON vs cable it's the split ratios typically being much lower at 32 : 1 vs 80 - 100 : 1.
Thanks for the video!

How is that fiber working out for you?
How was it
I actually stream on my old 9-year laptop (i7 Processor) with powerful 2MB upload, goes out around 1MB, can't imagine what i can do with 3MB upload 😊
77MB upload here.
Finally I get my burning question answered. Thank you.
I do work for an ISP who has both coax and fiber connection and I go with the competition.
what kind of gimble/camera stabilizer are you using?
I have fiber from Gonet speed and this is actually interesting. Frontier is advertising in our area and I'm sure in other parts of the country as well but from what I understand talking to go net speed frontier does not have any of their own fiber lines on the streets. They're literally leasing fiber lines from go net speed so if you're offered fiber from frontier and you know that go net speed is in your area, I would go with go net speed.
I've been able to make my LTE hotspot fully optimized and can use tricks to get more throughput which fixes my packet and frame loss and I can cloud game without compression. It's either my isp or the service I'm using or both that is throttling the throughput which causes packet loss and frame drops. I would have thought I just need better internet or fiber. The main problem is I live in the sticks. So only satellite or LTE hotspot is available. So it took me literally years of testing and trying different configurations to find out how to stop packet loss for cloud gaming. So it is not the connection LTE issue? If I can use this trick I found and it fixes it right? I'm still a little lost as why I can do this trick and fix the packet loss. It's like a bypassing technique I have figured out and it evidently does give me more throughput and fixed my packet loss and frame drops.
just asking do you work for Deloitte by any chance your office cubicle looks a hell lot like them and at 2:21 a guy with an office badge walked pass behind you with a id similar in Deloitte

My thing is alot of people live in my house and use my internet.. In fact my wifi speed is sometimes 0.99 mbps and I'm afraid that even if I buy Elevate it won't make much of a difference
Fiber vs dsl/cable is basically using sound for signal vs using light for signal
I have 1gb/s, and the upload and download speeds are all over the place. They're not even the same. DNS settings can change a lot as well. Still not reliable at all.
Bro this is crazy I love in the country in the middle of no where and somehow the electric company got multiple grants to put fiber in the county, and now I am getting it this week
That's actually wild, wtf? Hahaha
Question. How is 100M Fios (Frontier) vs 400mbps (Spectrum)??
getting fiber this morning we game on!!!
Having 1000+Mbps Fiber connection isn’t going to make you a God at Fortnite. Having the lowest latency is what matters and decent internet speeds like 25mbps. And Always Use LAN cable never WiFi. People who complain about lag are the ones who are on WiFi and their routers are far away from their console at the other end of the house 😂
Does fibre reduce latency is what I wanna know
@@umerakbar1095 good question
well since I have 25 Mb per second and an ethernet cable and I'm still getting 60 ping? I also live in Ohio which is right next to the Fortnite servers (there in virginia)
oUgh-FN he says we need 25mbps for good ping but i get 250 mbps which isn’t great and I get 20 ping. I also use ethernet
Jose P exactly it’s just the ping and packet loss for the gamers but fiber connection is for gaming and streaming 4K and good for speed testing and if you have 940-1000 your internet is fast if you have 400 mbps the internet is fast and it’s it doesn’t matter.
I use cox internet and for some reason in our house I have these long periods of time where I have 200+ ping and packet loss. I don’t even have fiber where I live yet
Skies put the router closer to you, for packet loss and better ping, trust me. I used to play wireless now I play wired with a LAN CABLE I average 40- ping with no delay nor packet loss. Playing with LAN CABLE is way better then wireless. If you cannot do that then buy mini pods which make your wifi stronger in the desired area.
Fibre is great and reliable in my area the infrastructure is capable of speeds up to 500Mbps and I believe that's more than enough for gaming, streaming and downloading. I have never been kicked out of a server while gaming. I play online for 6 hours on average and it has never lagged at all.
ATT is adding fiber to our neighborhood. Can't wait!
The problem with cable internet like Xfinity is because it runs off 1 shared line throughout the neighborhood. Not a dedicated line to your home. The cables that are wired within your neighborhood causes down times when many people are using the internet like between 5 pm and 9 pm.. you will experience down times. Thats how they get you.. they advertize 1000-3000 gbps but people dont read “up to”. Their speeds are not dedicated. If you want dedicated.. get fiber.
OK, so the older cable is shared, fiber is separated per apartment ?
I am about to get my first fiber modem couse my older modem died, i figured i upgrade.
They all die over time.
I been playing with 4g wireles actually, and it matter what your neighbours are doing with it.
And i been playing with the adsl also.
I rather have solid latency with low end speed than high end speeds with shiet latency.
FTTH is shared too. It's just with a much smaller split ratio for the FTTH splitter vs the cable node. It's also easy to flip customers at the splitters to another splitter if it becomes congested.
I’m sitting here with the lowest form of internet Satellite internet. At this point just dreaming because I have no other choice.
On the bright side Elon Musk is releasing star link next year. I imagine you live out in the rural due to your outdated internet choice (or lack of choice) areas where it will preform best.
That is the worse for sure been there bud lucky to watch a movie
I’m in the same boat can’t play anything because I have 150 ping. Also get 1mbps download speed tops.
Starlink?
Me too
In Tamil Nadu, India..I got BSNL Ftth...its..really good...100mbps down and up...costs really cheaper than the ..limited plans of mobile data...i appreciate fiber..
can the use of a microwave interfere with the fibre connection speeds?
How do i find other ISP's than the one i'm on though? I'm on spectrum, wanna jump off because modem power cycles for no reason and they've never fixed it.
You'll have to look in your local area. Try looking at your local phone company. Though in some areas there is only 1 provider which is very unfortunate.
I use cable WiFi and get 30 mbps download and 4 mbps upload. And in West Virginia there is only two internet providers, Suddenlink and Frontier. Frontier is pretty much unusable and sundenlink is ok. I got the best Suddenlink internet you can get and it’s only that fast 😕
I have never come close to having the same upload speed as download speed on fiber. Maybe I’m doing something wrong.
Either the ISP cheeped out and went with non-symmetrical optics so it would be expected or there is something very wrong.
Been waiting for fibre for ages, our adsl infrastructure is super old and really unreliable. Fibre is finally being installed in my neighborhood and I'll be getting a solid 200mbs up/down in the next month 🔥

My apartment has 1000mbps fiber available, is this vdsl2 or just the basic vdsl ?
I can only find vdsl2 modems nowdays, i hope they are compatible with this building connection.
Kinda like usb ports, new port can take older sticks.
Old ports can detect new stick but they only give you lower speeds ?
You're confusing fiber internet with DSL. VDSL is a variant of DSL. Fiber internet is a totally different technology. You cannot use a DSL modem with fiber internet. Fiber optic internet uses a light to transmit data whereas DSL uses copper wiring and electrical pulses. Does your internet provider no provide you with a gateway?
@@JJFlores197 There are modems that have both acces ADSL/VDSL, so no, i am not confusing these connections. Some apartment buildings sadly have contracts to use only one operator, is why single customer cant choose their favor operator, the building managers always choose the cheapest shiet, and chiepest shiet is not a gamer choise, therefore i am always stuck with frikkin 4g.
Needs to be your own house, then you can choose your favor operator.
The bigger operator the shittier it is, all they care is profits and not on quality product.
@@mazz85- Not sure what you mean then. You say your apartment has fiber internet available then you start talking about DSL modems. So what is it? Do you not want to use fiber internet and want to use DSL internet? Or what am I missing? I would gladly get on board with fiber internet over the archaic DSL internet service.
wouldn't fiber optic have a vulnerability to extreme cold weather or water seeping into the casing and freezing? I'm in MN and it gets cold here.
Same we might get it
How much does fiber cost in the us? In Lithuania you can get 1 Gb/s for 25 euro a month and around 40% of Lithuanians use fiber
You failed to mention the fiber only goes to the outside of your house and the in a lot of cases they you coax to the modem. Yes sometimes the can run a ethernet cable from the fiber box to the computer but most times they do not
Recently got upgraded to fibre here at my house and for my connection at least the fibre connects to a service box outside and then they run fibre inside the house to a Network Termination Device "a box inside the house" and from there I run an Ethernet cable from that to my Router and then Ethernet to my PC. So apart from my home network its all Fibre. I could also just connect my PC straight to the NTD if i wanted to via Ethernet.
One thing it's allowed me to do is to move all my gaming to the cloud - and it works much better than any PC I've ever had and I don't need one I can game on my old laptop and kick ass still
My ping is not stable it jumps from 100ms to 150 ms every now and then It even Jumps Upto 300 ms or 250 ms on my PS4. Does fiber will help me to get stable ping ???
I was wondering if getting 200mbps fiber optic for 5 people would still give me low ping or if I would have to get the 500mbps or 1 gig can I get a good ping under 20 with 200mbps with fiber
Is Fios Frontier 50/50 plan enough for 1 person??
I just game & stream 4k movies tv shows etc.
Yea its around 25 for most 4k streams but 35 is what i recommend.
What is a moderate speed, do you recommend 10Mgbs/Sec or 20 ?
Keep in mind difference of price between 10 and 20 speeds yearly subscription
1,000 Mbps from At&t... never have experienced it though. Usually only get 150Mbps on wifi... up to 800Mbps down on hard line. Jitter sucks though

This is 99.8 % accurate the .2% is that with cable even though it’s shared long as your using a docsis modem that has 24x8 the traffic to ur home should be fine but even these days I don’t even think the 16x4 modems give issues and it goes up to 32x8
Does that mean if there's high traffic on the modem or so many ppl connected to it That I will get slower speed in peak times?!

I find with AT&T fiber it slows down below 100 mbs when everyone gets home from work.
So true just got fiber and so fast I went on the road and it's only 2 bars love fiber
Download speed has very little to do with gaming. Latency is what affects gaming massively. That being said I work with Fiber, Coax Cable ,and Fixed Wireless. Fiber is definitely more reliable vs Coax. But that being said all of them are to the point where you can pass tons of bandwidth. All can push over 1Gbps if the provider wanted to. Fiber latency is very low but also is fixed wireless with LOS. Getting around sub 10ms ping for both if it’s setup correctly. Personally is pointless to have 1Gbps speeds cool you can download a game faster but for 95 percent of the time you will never utilize more than 20Mbps unless your doing a download.
Finally someone who understands. I wish internet servicer providers would stop marketing their faster plans as being better for gaming. Increasing the bandwidth on your cable subscription will not reduce your latency in most cases.
Thank you so what should i do ? Should i get fiber for better ping. Im a clueless duck
I just got Shitcinatti Hell Fiber Optic wi fi a few days ago and it sucks ! I went to download a small 5 gig patch for a Playstation game and the download speeds were between 6 mbps and 20 mbps 😡 they advertise 750 mbps! it took at least 5 times longer than it did with my regular non fiber Spectrum wifi. Oh and also I talked with one of the rudest unprofessional customer service representatives I have ever encountered in my entire life and they couldn't fix it . Garbage ass company!
What if you watch a lot netflix/CR and you have a lot of devices connected? It definitely helps to have higher speeds.
Cable is still struggling to offer upstream speeds that are not a complete joke. Would never consider cable with FTTH available. Ya, that's the whole point of having a faster connection is for downloading and uploading.
I have fibre internet but the latency is 40-70 ping
What type of connection do you use? Is it reliable enough for you?

How is it going?
Does anyone know if Starry is good for gaming? I cannot find much data on it, so I’m afraid to cancel my Century Link
My ISP offers a 1Gbit network connection but only 50 Mbps upload speed(advertised!) though. I feel ripped off (again) :( Seems like eventhough fiber can support the speed both ways, it's not a given.
Some ISPs cheap out and go with non-symmetrical optics. Most are not that stupid.
I moved into a house 2 years ago all most and still haven't got fiber
I have Spectrum and we have the best plan they offer. My latency goes from 33-200 every match when I play COD...
Same. I have the 400mbps with Spectrum and I'm wired into the router....I always have a bunch of packet loss with Rocket league and Modern warfare.
Serchum i do too, just ordered the att fiber this afternoon. Coming to install next saturday
Fabricio Williams is your latency down with the fiber?
Spectrum is not that great for low latency. Their routing is not very direct and it increases latency significantly.
Is 100 mbps good from google fiber?
In homes where 3 kids have ps4s a pc and mum and dad streaming 4k to the TV yess you need fibre...
Lee Matt you just named my house perfectly stalker?
If I have Fiber on IPv4... is that good? Or is Cable on IPv6 faster?
They won't be faster on either protocol, it's just sent in a different form. It also depends on what plan you get, like 1000 Mbps Down / 54 Mbps Up on Cable or 900 Mbps Down / 900 Mbps Up on Fiber which in this example, the Fiber broadband would win on the upload, but the Cable broadband would win on the download.
I can get AT&T Dedicated Fiber anywhere in the US but it’s not cheap
I get fiber where I live and it’s amazing when gaming
Do this have a data cap
I just moved out and trying to find the best internet service for gaming. My parents internet was completely garbage
I live on a island in Southern Ontario. The island i live on only has 1 wifi provider and that is eastlinl and man they're shit. We don't even have any other option. So we are forced to stick with eastlink. My parents don't even wanna move off this island. My parents told me we are getting Fiber-optic internet in spring 2021. So i hope i can get into live streaming with this wifi.
What os the best fibre internet in bristol
I have att fiber and have been EXTREMELY mad with my service. My internet is absolutely great as long as the sites I’m going to att likes. Att doesn’t like RUclips so now RUclips and basically all google services are just about unusable. I have to use a VPN to “trick” att to not knowing what site I’m looking at and then I can get useable RUclips. Still not full speed though because the vpns take a hit on speed. So I’m paying full price for full speed but can’t get full speed.
I got att fiber to... what mbps do u have I got 100mbps , I had cox paid $110’for gigablast now paying $60 for 100mbps with att fiber... it’s confusing lol...
does fibre work through the telephone lines like dsl
No. Fiber requires special cables.
Good info but I do believe that you downplayed the importance of speed.
Yep, that's me I'm one of those gamers 😎
Hopefully Google resumed laying cable in Your area.. If South Salt Lake can get it.. SLC proper by all means should have it 3 years after this vid was published. It nice having 800+ down, 950 Up :)
I live in Salt Lake and it seems Google fiber has started back up!
Please explain. I have 40mbps fibre. So why do i get 300 - 400 ms ping? I mean I have a smooth (really smooth gameplay) So i dont understand. I know my internet is fast enough
How far are you from the servers and is your routers good
@@supersop1367 server for the games is in another country, thats probably the reason
@@kylejackson7176 we legit play on the same servers lol
How much ping would att fiber give you in fn
I've got fibre had it a couple months and couldn't go back. I have symmetrical 600mbps it's more than enough.
alot of you are saying fibers good but after I got it my games always times out, and my browser is really slow!
Entire comments underappreciated with the internet they have. I'm here struggling with $90 wireless hotspot 50gig plan that runs average 7-12mbps. Patches can be 1-3gigs for my games and run 100-300mb per hour gaming. Ping is average 80 plays fine in the country side with no cable here, honestly plays all game fine under 100 ping, unless you're playing shooting games then that's a difference. While everyone complain that they're lagging cus they see a 60-90 ping as high to them... Smh. I would love cable or fiber internet just to get them cheap plans with high data and lower latency :/
I feel you brother I have fibre internet being built on my road finally I’ve had wireless for 8 years now and I cannot online game simply I have 4 siblings who all game so we lag immensely
Can someone tell me if it’s worth to get at&t fiber at 75mbps for two people living in a house who game and stream movies.
@Mymm2gameplayisthis you know that speed doesn't have anything to do with his ping when he games right?
