    RELEASE DATE: August 14
    DIRECTORS: Jesse Moss and Amanda McBain
    Every year, 1,100 boys head to Austin, TX. Only one will be elected Governor. Watch the trailer for Boys State, a new documentary film coming to Apple TV+ August 14.
    The sensational winner of the Grand Jury Prize for documentary at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Boys State is a wildly entertaining and continually revealing immersion into a week-long annual program in which a thousand Texas high school seniors gather for an elaborate mock exercise: building their own state government. Filmmakers Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine closely track the escalating tensions that arise within a particularly riveting gubernatorial race, training their cameras on unforgettable teenagers like Ben, a Reagan-loving arch-conservative who brims with confidence despite personal setbacks, and Steven, a progressive-minded child of Mexican immigrants who stands by his convictions amidst the sea of red. In the process, they have created a complex portrait of contemporary American masculinity, as well as a microcosm of our often dispiriting national political divisions that nevertheless manages to plant seeds of hope. Apple and A24 present Boys State.

    I actually thought this was a mockumentary until I googled Boys State and wow. It's a real thing. Boys and girls (there are girls ones too) participate in structured mock systems of government and it varies from state to state as to what the program is but it sometimes includes military training, electing government officials, passing bills, mock trials etc.

    Seeing boys state be taken so seriously in this makes me laugh.
    At my boys state we declared war on another city and invaded them in a massive pillow fight, passed a city ordinance that anyone who came into our area who wasn't from our area had to scootch in their butts until they left our city, and attempted to secede from the rest of the organization but couldn't get enough votes. Our state legislature didn't pass a single bill and our governor ate chips with his friends every day. But it helped me get into West Point so it was worth it.

    At my Texas Boys State we had a full blown pillow war. I'm talking two whole floors of the Jester dorm, the big guys using mattresses as shield walls or battering rams, and all the screaming to make a playful game as serious as possible. And you can bet that when the noise complaints starting racking up and various officials were sent to find out who was making all the noise, we vanished into thin air. I think out of 40 of us only 3 were caught, and they never snitched.

    So I went to Boys State in Idaho (there's one for every state) in 2013. Came back as a counselor in 2014. One of the best experiences of my life. And it was everything like what was described in that video right there. Except we had 150 (2013, 100 2014) people instead of 1100. Also it sounds like in the Texas Boys State they talk actual politics. In the Idaho one we focused more on the political process, so while our mock court stuff was based on real cases, our bills for the congress and city councils and stuff were like "It shall be required to sing at least one verse of one song in the shower. Anyone found to not do this shall have their towel privileges revoked."
    For reals. One of the best times of my entire life. One of the big reasons I got into humanitarian development (my professional field).

      @sandalssuck I've seen the movie and that is not the case. It wasn't scripted. You can't script what happens at Boys State. The filmmakers had a lot of camera crew trying to capture everything and they had a ton of footage to edit into the story. When you have people running for an office, natural drama is going to happen and they caught it.

    I wish they would have used Buckeye Boy State. It's the largest (1,300), and is the most comprehensive, even being the inspiration for a similar program in Israel. Boy State was amazing! I wish I could go back and do it all over again! It's not as bad as it might seem. It's really just a big camp, but there are some seriously motivated people who go, and teenage hijinks inevitably ensues. But you learn about each level of government, the caucus process, the primary and voting process, writing local, county, and state party platforms, circulating petitions, running campaigns, administering the law. You have to take a bar exam to be a lawyer or hold a judicial position, you have to cite case law in hearings and trials, etc. It's really a lot of fun. A little militaristic, but it's run/paid for by the American Legion, so that makes sense. But it was a fantastic nine days!

    For everyone saying this is satire, it's not! In high school I was in the NY Boys State! This Texas one looks kinda similar but of course it's being portrayed dramatically. During my week the hot water wasn't working so everyone took two minute cold showers. We also weren't allowed to have phones the whole week. We woke up around 5:30 each morning for physical training with our assigned marine, and then the rest of the day consisted of political alliances, bribes, etc... Really interesting to be assigned a county where you can run for office. And if you make it far enough you can keep running until you become a senator or even the governor! Lots of speeches and voting. And the whole thing was run by Marines and volunteers from the Army or vets. And the whole thing is put on by the American Legion! Can't forget them. Super fun week but there's a lot of marching, burpees (a few kids puked and one of the marines was happy about it, said he had "stolen another soul" each time), and following orders. Very little free time and a lot of the participants are already in rotc programs. Always super rushed to eat food in mess hall too. It was a chaotic week but it was really fun! Super excited to see a documentary on the experience!

    • @SpudSpudoni
      @SpudSpudoni 4 года назад

      Always interesting to hear about another state’s program. Palmetto Boys State in SC had some similarities of course, but I’d say ours leaned very far away from politics (in terms of what’s shown above) in terms of experience. A lot of it was city based. We’d make giant banners of our cities (each named after a river in SC) with some mascot or message. You’d do chant battles against other cities, have intramural sports, talent shows, and quizbowls against other cities, and would get awards daily based on how well you did in certain categories. The most awards by the end of the week, you won “All Marine City”. Of course there was the political side, voting, party meetings, speeches, etc. But rarely would anyone walk through the halls trying to “earn your vote” or try to pitch political schemes. Maybe the final two gov candidates for sure, but otherwise it was weird if you did lol

It's only 6 days, so absolutely worth the investment in the long run.

    Hawkeye Boys Stater 2016, this program was and is the shit. I make it a mission to go every year and be a counselor and make the week the best it can be for them rather than some super serious chore that they probably thought it was. There's always a few guys that make it as serious as it can be but honestly it's so much better having fun with the program and making weird asf legislation. I do hope the Legion and Legionnaires get credit and respect in this, they were one of the best parts of the program and they're the ones holding it every year.
