There is no comparison to the many ups and downs on this journey, physically, mentally and emotionally. This is going to be the best time of your life, be mindful of each day and focus on your wellbeing. Your resilience will be tested, there will be sunlight, there will be respite, the trail provides many more rewards ahead of the last. It's been 2-years since I through hiked the AT, I still can't shake it and knowing what I know now I would've slowed down and stayed longer. You will see hikers that can't be done fast enough, to get off the trail and why it's a shame, let the bastards go and KEEP SMILING!
Congratulations on your start! You are not only going to have an incredible journey heading north but this trail will change your life! geek A.T. '90 & '02, PCT '08
Please don't push too many miles too quickly. I learned that lesson the hard way. Ease into the trail gently & before you know it you'll be bagging a lot of peaks in short order. You're GOT this!! I'm looking forward to following you along on what promises to be an EPIC adventure! Be safe & by all means happy trails!
Same. Did a week hiking in Scotland and absolutely wrecked my knee on day one doing 15 miles and limped for another 85 over 6 days total. It was a dumb, optimistic assumption I could go straight out of the gate like that and man did it hurt
Nice weather for the start. What was your bag tag number? (other than the cold) I like the idea of a New Year's Day start. It will make it easy to keep up with what trail day it is.
Haha it's been wonderful. In 2020 the bubble was a nightmare so that's what I was trying to avoid. My # is 6 but they won't have tags until February 15th
Congratulations on your first day!!! Keep it real keep it about what's in your head!!!! That is what sets you apart from the crowd!!! Keep it going and I am now a follower!
Well good luck with that thru hike , I’m glad I saw day 1❕My question ; is this the regular time folks start thru hiking? Keep warm & stay safe , forsure❕🔆〽️❄️
No haha. Usually people start in March but lately February. I started Jan 1 because "new year, new me." And I wanted to avoid all the people. I started February 20, 2020 before covid and there was 100s of people out here and it was no fun. Also in January it's cold but fairly dry. March sees lots of rain, sleet, and snow.
Let’s go Sam! It’s THE MARLIN, miss you brother! Would be sick to see you in jersey when you get there. I’ll call ya sometime soon. All the best. Your boy - FS
Congrats man, sounds like you're on the right track. I have a lot of respect for your open sharing of your thoughts, it must be hard put that out there and I'm sure it'll help a lot of people to see you doing this and keeping it real. I'll be out there late April so I'm sure I won't catch up but I'll be following your journey.
From a fellow 2025 Thru Hike participant , I am sending you positive thoughts and prayers for your journey I will be starting March 23rd 2025 and look forward to be following in your footsteps on your quest to conquer the A.T. Enjoy the quiet and peace of Gods Creation I am also very sorry to hear the loss of your dog, they are always so much more then just an animal They really connect to a part of our soul that is very real and once it’s their time to go, it’s always difficult, speaking from personal experience My German Shepherd Sadie and I will be thru hiking the A.T so hopefully we can meet up at some point on the trail Anyway thanks for your videos and keep the going 🙏🏽 God Bless , Liam and Sadie
At the beginning of the video, I assumed you were in a hammock from the angle and what looked like a camo print tarp. Best of luck, and one day at a time.
Crazy your from shamokin pa I currently live in Sunbury. I hike often and do section hikes on the AT. Get ahold of me when your done with your journey we can hit some trails!!
Love your attitude brother!

Congrats on your start. Having done both, I would prefer a shelter every time.
Congratulations on your start! You are not only going to have an incredible journey heading north but this trail will change your life!

Hurricane helene blew through north ga at the end of September.
The blow down is way worse up in western nc and northeast Tennessee by erwin and roan mountain areas.
That something big through here was the hurricane. Wait til you get to Tennessee and North Carolina.
Sam - what state do reside? How long did you plan for this?
Pennsylvania. And years many many years. Covid ruined my first attempt in 2020
Good attitude ✅️ , good gear ✅️ , poop ✅️. Doesn't get any better.
Yes it has been seriously cold out here.
The recent super cold temps had to be brutal.
-4 has been our coldest so far. Now it's 34 and we are sweating
@ Downright balmy! As long as it is not accompanied by rain!
Let’s gooooo
Crazy your from shamokin pa I currently live in Sunbury. I hike often and do section hikes on the AT. Get ahold of me when your done with your journey we can hit some trails!!
