The valvetronic motor diy is notorious for the person doing it to not put it back in correctly. In the BMW forums there's always guys crying saying they're car won't start now after replacing it or doing a valve cover repair. Your scanner probably has a function to synchronize it after its put in to learn the max and min adjustments. Good diagnosis as usual Ivan!

When you build cars that are so complicated that only dealerships have the tools or proprietary data and information to repair them, it's all over for the independent shops. Then, it's a fortune to repair what once was simple and cheap. The ultimate goal is to shorten the lives of cars and sell more new ones.
I’m a 16 BMW master tech, nice diagnosis and good video. There is a service function to relearn valvetronic limit positions when you replace the VVT motor, not sure if you can do it with an aftermarket scanner. Also the eccentric shaft is known to bind and sometimes when it does it wipes out the DME because it puts to much load on the VVT motor. Thanks for sharing
You would think the computer monitors current draw and those pulses should be put to good use and prevent this kind of driver burnout by not applying current persistently.
Thank you for the detailed information, Brandon! Yes I was afraid that the root cause of the clicking issue is a seizing Valvetronic shaft... Hopefully it lasts a while longer for the owner, but wouldn't bet any money on that haha

Ive been bit by this once, the motor needs to be installed in midrange of the roostercomb gear of the valvetronic, its spring loaded and will want to fall to minimum. When the engine is started the valvetronic motor is checked by the pcm and parked at close to 80% and simultaneously the throttlebody is opened up to allow smooth start, the engine is then fully handed over to valvetronic after the pcm confirms the vanos timing is correct. My problem was a slightly moved timing on the vanos and wrong installed valvetronic, once everything was installed correct, engine started first key.

There is a specific procedure as you mentioned to set the eccentric shaft in the correct position before installing the VVT motor. Then after the valve cover is back on and the vehicle is running, there is a procedure that has to be run to learn the max and min locations of the VVT motor. I believe when the vehicle is turned off, the computer sets turns the VVT motor so that the eccentric shaft is at max lift. Hi Ivan, is there a chance you can make a video on troubleshooting the ignition system of a single piston motor bike (2 stroke, 4 stroke or a lawn mower)-- with the lab scope?. All the videos here in RUclips show you how to "test" the coil with the multimeter, give a "reasonable" resistance reading but none has tested it with the lab scope to show that waveform of the good/bad coil to troubleshoot it. It would be nice to just hook that Snap On Verus Pro's RPM or KV probe, pull the cord and see if anything is wrong by comparing it to a known good value and actually see those spark/timing waveforms. 😁

I know for a fact that every time any mechanical valvetronic repait you should learn the minimum valve lift reset with scan tool. You could have do that first if scan tool is capable of doing that.
Direct injection garbage. That design ruined a lot of cars. It just irritates me to no end they put that garbage in cars. I have two sisters that had to replace engines because the valves (intake valves mainly) start coking up and then don’t seat properly. Port and TBI fuel injection were a good idea. They made the modern engines run a lot smoother and washed the valves on the way into the cylinder. Direct injection bypasses the manifold and is injected directly into the cylinder. I sure wouldn’t mind going down the rabbit hole to see how this idea even saw the light of day. Don’t get me started on where they decided to put the water pump in some of the newer vehicles.
No need to install it in special position, just run the learn function for the valvetronic motor so it can learn the new end positions and car starts immediately. Not eurotrash, just a lot more complicated than american cars and bmw's want specialized mechanics not all :)
People doing their own repairs on Bimmers........big mistake. And the Valvetronic has to be relearned whenever it's removed. It has to learn it's stop points.
I was wondering how one would get the motor/actuator synchronized with the part it moved, but also thought maybe the motor would move it to a physical limit when switched on and then come back - kind of a self-learn thing. Nah, that would be too easy, wouldn't it? So "Valvetronic' means VVT by an electric actuator instead of a solenoid and oil pressure? Why? Because BMW?
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Sorry! Didn't think of that..... So the Valvetronics part handles intake valve lift and duration and Vanos VVT handles valve timing.... Those German names or translations can be so funny - I remember Graupner model airplanes named the "Sinus" and the "Donald".
As much as I love VW golfs and polos and BMW But when they break in electric wise they can be very complicated to fix that's the problem with Toyota and Honda you never get that issue even opel are fairly simple to fix and parts are cheap
No worries, the turbo will fail soon, the transmission will start having issues, and he'll be calling about various emissions related failures that will become constant. SRS modules could be next, but my money is on the turbo, then emissions, then the SRS system and transmission in there somewhere, who knows where. Good for the owner it's not a V-8, then it would already have had the engine fail due to rod bearings and cylinder scoring. Was the E36 3-series the last decent car BMW made? Cripes...
What failed in my N54 were the turbo wastegate actuators. Basically two vacuum pump valves to open and close the waste gates. Fingers crossed on my turbos! I've always let them cool down before shutting the car off and never really step on the car to abuse them.
i am in euro trash land i think it's more known how as anything . gm here in Holland is very bad eating chains ( i know bmw and peugot also ) but not learning the parts in the computer is a mistake , not bad quality ( i know bmw is not as good as before as all the brands ) i think as long the people dont complain these company's will not improve ther quality
As I've commented before one one of your previous videos, I think the Eurotrash label is unwarranted as any american car with that sort of mileage would be in a similar condition. The over complication of european car complexity is driven by emissions an fuel economy, something you guys in the states dont seem to have an issue with
BMWs are excellent cars if you know how to work on them. Never use aftermarket parts on a BMW!! Very much a precision motor that Hass to be treated that way!!
BMW are excellent at keeping a person's wallet in the red. Owning German is best when done with a lease. Owning anything German is a recipe for self annihilation
A motor dies after 160000 miles, the owner first does a heck job with a cheap part and then another heck job with an OEM part. I'd say this does not classify it to be called "Eurotrash". At least, not yet.
You have no right to call X5 to trash. Look previous mickey mouse owners, who never serviced the car! So, mickey mouse is bad, not X5. Watched the video, that small problem was DIY problem. Question remains, what happened with original part? These engines are very sensitive for oil changes and oil must be euro qualified oil, not mickey mouse garbage oil. There is more magic behind the scenes than just viscosity rating.

I check all fuse in the engen area I pull out the box under the glove compartment nex to the door and check it for burn or broken fuse also in the trunk nex to the battery and I pull out the side peace in the trunk and check those fuse as well but all looks good to me, the phues I check with a tester and I ask a electrician to test the black regulator that is in the engine bay nex to the inches on the car bonnet and he say it was working, also take out that little black box at the front of the engine that you have to cut open to check fuse and they all good as well
I know for a fact that every time any mechanical valvetronic repait you should learn the minimum valve lift reset with scan tool. You could have do that first if scan tool is capable of doing that.
Try the Keith wiggle test!
I knew it had to do with the owner not doing the re-learning process after the new parts were installed.
So another BMW gets called Eurotrash when the owner screws up on the repair? Nice one Ivan. ;-)
But repair was attempted because of "clicking" sound. Likely eccentric shaft and valvetrain components are worn and seizing up...big $$ JUNK!
Thursday, June 16, Keep an eye to the sky Ivan. You're under a tornado watch until 11 PM
It rained lightly for 5 minutes... No wind🤣
That's not a chime, it's a reminder that you should've had it crushed and bought a new one then crush that after three years or fewer.
That's almost as good as a happy ending
Euro trash it is Ivan, Ur BMW diags r becoming my latest addiction.
Ivan, watch thinktool do you have pro or pros or pros+ ???? I'm looking to upgrade from my launch.
Pros
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics thank you for the quick reply.
back on the road for now, next week or month, stuck again with the same issue. 🤣
get any pics of that chevy van
"gonna have it towed to my buddy's shop, who gives a f that he's never worked on a BMW before"
Ivan, which pico scope do you have?
I was wondering how one would get the motor/actuator synchronized with the part it moved, but also thought maybe the motor would move it to a physical limit when switched on and then come back - kind of a self-learn thing. Nah, that would be too easy, wouldn't it? So "Valvetronic' means VVT by an electric actuator instead of a solenoid and oil pressure? Why? Because BMW?
No VVT is separate, it's called VANOS.
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Interesting - so what does the "Valvetronic" part actually do, if not VVT?
@@dustcommander100 Google it!
@@dustcommander100 A teardown at about the 7 45 mark you get a nice view. ruclips.net/video/ODrETDBMv8k/видео.html
Throw more modules at it!!!
This is called progress?
Where can I get a PHAD T shirt?
The swag store keeps getting pushed back to the wait list lol...but it's coming sooner or later!
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I'd hate to have to get a Chinese knock off 😆
Good morning
No parts required 😁
Ivan it’s amazing how people don’t check their own work before calling for help. Good for you but come on. Hope all is well 😊
Hey! What's with the euro-trash talk? Seems this one was US-technician trash... 😛
cool
i am in euro trash land i think it's more known how as anything . gm here in Holland is very bad eating chains ( i know bmw and peugot also ) but not learning the parts in the computer is a mistake , not bad quality ( i know bmw is not as good as before as all the brands ) i think as long the people dont complain these company's will not improve ther quality
Good design but you got to know bmws I like the valvetrain motor better than oil that clogs in the things
BMW = Bring Money Wallet
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🌷
Why do BMW have so much trouble with valve matic It's nut's how everybody else they have no bother except for the 5.4 3 valve
As I've commented before one one of your previous videos, I think the Eurotrash label is unwarranted as any american car with that sort of mileage would be in a similar condition. The over complication of european car complexity is driven by emissions an fuel economy, something you guys in the states dont seem to have an issue with
Only worth that's easy on a BMW is signing it over to The junkyard
Ivan, stop insulting trash by calling it a bmw!
BMWs are excellent cars if you know how to work on them. Never use aftermarket parts on a BMW!! Very much a precision motor that Hass to be treated that way!!
Yes and don't forget to maintain the engine with the prescribed oils
BMW are excellent at keeping a person's wallet in the red. Owning German is best when done with a lease. Owning anything German is a recipe for self annihilation
Why do people keep throwing part's at stuff without paying somebody to do proper checks first
A motor dies after 160000 miles, the owner first does a heck job with a cheap part and then another heck job with an OEM part.
I'd say this does not classify it to be called "Eurotrash". At least, not yet.
Stupid Chime. Sounds like you're in a casino.
I'd sell that piece of junk as soon as I got it running.
Well, they are certainly better than the Russian Lada, Moskvich, etc. 😉
Totally different class of vehicle, each suited to its own purpose and environment 😂
I love how much you hate BMW and VW.. lol..
I concur
Cam phasers AND actualors need to be replaced every 100k. Same as Fords
BMW. Big Money Waisted
Broken Money Waster....LOL
Next video, they forgot to reconnect some ground wires.
Now it needs a new computer 😄🤣😂
"Eurolife"
Correction ‘over priced eurotrash’
Let the euro-trash be euro-trash...Fancy throttle body...What's wrong with drive by wire or cable throttle body...of course is BMW...
