109 should be at least 9/10. You forgot to mention the best thing about the route:
    outside of box hill central
a man was sipping on cask wine
    heading down to balwyn mcdonalds
    i was on the 109
me and some guys from school
    heading down to north richmond
we had to go through victoria street
    where everyones on heroin
oh when i look back now
the tram always seemed to take forever
    stopping at victoria gardens
    with daiso and hoyts cinema
    all thanks to the 109
one man is sniffing on paint thinner
    another man smells like glue
i spent my evenings on the 109 tram
and thats when i met u
standing up at the tram stop
    opposite the kew tram depot
u had just been to the skinny dog
oh we got the tram together
and we both got a myki fine
    we were on the 109
    we were on the 109
    on the 109
    adahdahdahdahdahdah
    the 109

I would agree too, despite being a busy route with a couple of a class trams running in this service. I would assume that the introduction of the new g class trams would displace some of the b class trams to run in the 109 service. That way overcrowding in trams ease a little despite the b class trams having double the capacity as the a class trams as well as them being the largest fleet member of the tram network.

I feel like the 86 deserved higher. The two reserve track sections on the route, allow trams to pick up some speed (especially on Plenty Road). To be honest, it's actually very similar to the 75. Great video!

Just because it’s slow on High Street shouldn’t mean the route 86 should get a 5/10. Am I right?

    • @aahckxsse7007
      @aahckxsse7007 8 месяцев назад +2

the speed of plenty rd is only useful if you need to go out there, which most people don’t expect for the two unis. otherwise it parallels the much faster 11 and mernda line, especially on high st and the preston section of plenty rd.

I used to work at the RMH and live in North Melbourne. I caught those 59/55/57 trams so often. I’m living in Perth now and this video has made me so nostalgic! I remember there was a Facebook group about the 57 tram and its unsavoury characters. It was called “the good ship 57” or something like that.

I agree that the 72 is a poor line overall but it has one very good strength that was not mentioned. The 72 has interchanges with Belgrave, Lilydale, glen Waverley, Frankston, and P/C train lines. Meaning that if it is one of the few tram lines in Melbourne the can actually replace a car and unlock massive amounts of the city.

Being a "born and bred" Melbourne girl, it's lovely to see the trams from another perspective. Even my Qld hubby found it interesting, as I insist that we trams whenever we visit !
He kept saying " oh, I know that place!"😂
My favourite routes have to be the 86 and 96, but that's because growing up, they are the 2 I used the most ....although back then, the 86 used to just in from the corner of Spencer and Bourke Streets , and terminated at the northern end of Plenty Road, before it veered right.
    ....it was the 70's 😂😂😂

  • @andrewjlow

Yep, the 109 is quite slow, particularly through Collins Street and Victoria Street/Parade... I use to work close to Southern Cross station and initially caught the 109 to work, however I then switched to catching the 109 to Box Hill and then train to Southern Cross. Occasionally, while I'm on the 109 to Box Hill, I would mental note down the tram number of any 109 I pass going towards the city to roughly gauge how long it takes to get to my office. Usually, I would be able to get to Southern Cross, walk to the office, go up the lift to my floor, setup my laptop, chat a bit, then go back down to get coffee and as I'm walking to coffee, the 109 I made a note of would have just passed! A total of 20 to 30 mins later!

Great video again mate! My two cents again 😊
Wowzers only 3/10 for the 72! It has a lot to offer in my view. Its main drawbacks to me are low frequency and the class of trams which are deployed.
For me at least, additional pluses are that the 72 also connects to Camberwell station and Toorak Station (in addition to Gardiner station) and the fact that it services the Alfred Hospital which is always one of its busiest stops. In fact, all of the stops between Hawksburn and St Kilda Road are always extremely well patronised. It’s also not as slow as it might seem at first glance.
    Keep it up mate 😊

Z-class trams must be extremely rare on Route 58, as I've worked near William Street pretty much daily for 18 months now and have yet to see one go past, mostly E-class and B2-classes, unless they run on weekends only which would make sense as to why I don't see the Zs.

I'm an 86er, and i have to agree with the rating. The shared Plenty/ High/ Smith sts just slow down what is quite a long journey. If you're just doing a short section, you probably wouldn't even notice.

  • @gibletgravy

Completely disagree with 58's rating. It's my local route and I can't express how much I hate using it. The Toorak rd section is horrendously slow due to shared traffic and on-street parking which causes delays further up the line towards Coburg. Not only this but the Kings Way section is one of the most unsightly areas on our network and the stops are hard to get to. Lastly, the Royal Park section is nice during the day, but is essentially pitch black at night which makes it a terrifying place to end up after a night out.

96 is my favourite line too. Small correction though: I've been on C2 Trams on the 86 twice this week alone. So it's not true that line would exclusively use E Class Trams. Frankly I think the 86 and 96 both interchangeably use C2 and E

  • @shaunhately1868
    @shaunhately1868 13 дней назад

Your ratings and criteria seem very strange to me. You seem to think speed and capacity across their entire lengths are the most important factors in classifying tram routes. But most people aren't using trams to travel an entire route, but for shorter trips on those routes. Whether they work for those short trips seems significantly more important to me.
I mean, you're entitled to any criteria you want. But - just as one example - the 16 is highly useful in getting people from Melbourne Central to Melbourne Uni. A short trip, but one a lot of people use. Or from Flinders Street to St Kilda (as you acknowledge). Judging it based on how long it takes to get from Melbourne Uni to Kew makes no sense, because most people aren't going to use it for trips like that.
(And if you think the 16 isn't used much, I suspect you haven't used it before or after school times)
