When West Footscray was rebuilt, the bluestone coping stones from the old station showing its mileage from Spencer Street were preserved and are mounted on the southern side of the station. Unfortunately, the accompanying explanatory plaque wrongly says the mileage was measured from the Melbourne GPO.

Interesting video. - The hump at Preston Depot is used for passengers during diversions for the route 86 & 11. - Route 86 also has 2 of the same stops being "Smith Street" heading towards Bundoora. - Route 11 West Preston terminus has no toilet. However, there is a public toilet in a park nearby but not always accessible. There is also a staff toilet at the 'New Presron Depot' stop. - Like Route 48, 86 has different Depot trams. One 86d that goes from Warerfront Docklands along the normal 86 route terminating at Dundas Street and one 11d that starts off at Waterfront Docklands then travels partly along route 30 then route 11.

When General Motors opened (in 1956, as mentioned), there was only a single platform on the down line. The only trains that stopped there were Dandenong trains (the limit of the suburban service) that extended out to General Motors, then returned. The second platform, on the up line, opened in 1975 in connection with the extension of suburban services to Pakenham. It was a late decision, and the platform was still being built when it opened! This is why the up platform is of different construction and in better condition than the down platform. A few regional trains also stopped there for workers travelling from/to Gippsland. And a few passengers coming from Gippsland on those trains were savvy enough to get off there and change to the following suburban train rather than change at Dandenong to go to an intermediate station. Once when I was there, which was before there was _any_ industry on the south side of the line, I saw a passenger get off a train there, go off the up end of the down platform, cross the tracks around where you did, and head off through the fields to the south to who knows where.

Route 699 is based on the old "Panorama" bus route. Panorama was a bus company that operated that route. I don't know when the route started, but it was sold to someone else in 1949, and later sold to U.S. Bus Lines (based in Belgrave) in the mid 1960s. I still recall seeing buses branded Panorama running that route.

It used to be the case (and perhaps still is) that a large proportion of East Richmond's traffic is people going _to_ the station from the Richmond direction because they work in the area. I'm also somewhat surprised at the number of comments about the lack of service at East Richmond. It has a train (in each direction) at least every 15 minutes for most of the day, which is more than a lot of stations get.

Funny how, apart from the obvious "CRT" error, the most-commented on matter was whether Box Hill was unique in having McDonalds available in the paid area. Sure, a correction was warranted, but so many comments makes one wonder about why so many are so familiar with that particular detail.

(EDITED) To find the next train they used to have speakers on the Port Adelaide station that would activate at the press of a button (used to have them on most stations, they'd also auto-activate as a train approached) - similar to the one you press on the North Adelaide one. But haven't caught a train in Adelaide for a decade or more.... Wow Bowden looks different! I think extension past Belair is problematic because of a gauge problem. I remember trains going to Bridgewater and maybe Even Mount Barker - but not sure the old track is still there (at least not in the right Gauge).

I agree that the 72 is a poor line overall but it has one very good strength that was not mentioned. The 72 has interchanges with Belgrave, Lilydale, glen Waverley, Frankston, and P/C train lines. Meaning that if it is one of the few tram lines in Melbourne the can actually replace a car and unlock massive amounts of the city.

The older buildings at Belair were used when the dual broad gauge services were still in place, and metro trains ran all the way to Bridgewater. They even had a station in the MIDDLE of the national park then too (there were 10 more in all). I can't see them reopening back to Mt Barker on the existing service because it would take forever. At the very least they need to be able to get down the hill from Belair to Mitcham much quicker then they can now.

Completely disagree with 58's rating. It's my local route and I can't express how much I hate using it. The Toorak rd section is horrendously slow due to shared traffic and on-street parking which causes delays further up the line towards Coburg. Not only this but the Kings Way section is one of the most unsightly areas on our network and the stops are hard to get to. Lastly, the Royal Park section is nice during the day, but is essentially pitch black at night which makes it a terrifying place to end up after a night out.

Great video again mate! My two cents again 😊 Wowzers only 3/10 for the 72! It has a lot to offer in my view. Its main drawbacks to me are low frequency and the class of trams which are deployed. For me at least, additional pluses are that the 72 also connects to Camberwell station and Toorak Station (in addition to Gardiner station) and the fact that it services the Alfred Hospital which is always one of its busiest stops. In fact, all of the stops between Hawksburn and St Kilda Road are always extremely well patronised. It’s also not as slow as it might seem at first glance. Keep it up mate 😊

Thanks for the video. Being a "born and bred" Melbourne girl, it's lovely to see the trams from another perspective. Even my Qld hubby found it interesting, as I insist that we trams whenever we visit ! He kept saying " oh, I know that place!"😂 My favourite routes have to be the 86 and 96, but that's because growing up, they are the 2 I used the most ....although back then, the 86 used to just in from the corner of Spencer and Bourke Streets , and terminated at the northern end of Plenty Road, before it veered right. ....it was the 70's 😂😂😂

I remember there was a Facebook group about the 57 tram and its unsavoury characters. It was called “the good ship 57” or something like that.

I'm an 86er, and i have to agree with the rating. The shared Plenty/ High/ Smith sts just slow down what is quite a long journey. If you're just doing a short section, you probably wouldn't even notice.

Yep, the 109 is quite slow, particularly through Collins Street and Victoria Street/Parade... I use to work close to Southern Cross station and initially caught the 109 to work, however I then switched to catching the 109 to Box Hill and then train to Southern Cross. Occasionally, while I'm on the 109 to Box Hill, I would mental note down the tram number of any 109 I pass going towards the city to roughly gauge how long it takes to get to my office. Usually, I would be able to get to Southern Cross, walk to the office, go up the lift to my floor, setup my laptop, chat a bit, then go back down to get coffee and as I'm walking to coffee, the 109 I made a note of would have just passed! A total of 20 to 30 mins later!

Z-class trams must be extremely rare on Route 58, as I've worked near William Street pretty much daily for 18 months now and have yet to see one go past, mostly E-class and B2-classes, unless they run on weekends only which would make sense as to why I don't see the Zs.

the speed of plenty rd is only useful if you need to go out there, which most people don’t expect for the two unis. otherwise it parallels the much faster 11 and mernda line, especially on high st and the preston section of plenty rd.

I would agree too, despite being a busy route with a couple of a class trams running in this service. I would assume that the introduction of the new g class trams would displace some of the b class trams to run in the 109 service. That way overcrowding in trams ease a little despite the b class trams having double the capacity as the a class trams as well as them being the largest fleet member of the tram network.
