    Growing up in Footscray and Maribyrnong and this route being “my tram route” for both school and work, it never struck me as odd. It is a bit a strange, but I’m glad it survived because I don’t know where I’d be without it! And yes, that stop is really dangerous. It tends to be okay during school hours because lots of people will be getting off but if not… it is quite scary.

    Interesting description of 82 👍. The other non-city route (78) has one claim to fame in that it is the only Melbourne tram route that is entirely in a straight line with no left or right turns from terminus to terminus

    The tram stop you thought was weird at 5:21 was originally for the Ordnance factory. I spent 20 year working there and would often wait for a tram to take to me to either Footscray or Ascot Vale. It was well patronised back in the day.

    Great video, love seeing a spotlight on Melbourne's public transport. That explosive sidings section of the route is practically begging to be upgraded to a tram-and-pedestrian only street with shops and houses

    57 and 82 also didn't run on Sundays, between 12-12-1961 and 08-08-1993, and buses were used instead.
    The 357 was the 57 equivalent, and the 223 was the 82 equivalent, although in the 1970s, they had some odd ways of covering it then.

      Also a bus service on Saturday afternoons. When conductors were phased out and trams became driver only, route 82 reintroduced all day Saturday and Sunday tram services. The replacement bus services did not run down Gordon Street or River Street, passengers had to walk to Ballarat Rd or Rosamond Rd to catch the bus.

    I am so envious of Melbourn! In my city (London, UK) we have like 1 tram route (with few branches, but one main trunk). I wish London had kept its once very extensive tram network...

    I just wanted to say I am very impressed with this channel. With only two videos you have almost 500 subscribers and over 30K views. This is amazing. Not to mention the video quality is spectacular too and highly informative. When I started my channel on the Perth network my videos were pretty bad and the views were extremely slow. Even now I don't even have 2K subs and I've been making videos for three years, and you're already a quarter of the way there! I've subscribed and am looking forward to future videos, I always wished there were videos for transport in other Australian cities in a similar way to the ones I make for Perth.

      It was a video about Melbourne's tram network which there are a few already so most likely popped up in conjunction with the other videos and it talked about something a lot of others may not have delved deeply into and peaked the interest of many viewers. Keep up the good work and the history lessons behind some of these tram lines.

    The old Footscray routes always left from Leeds street, your map is a little wrong. Also missing the other Ballarat Rd route.

    • @davidbayley9588
      @davidbayley9588 9 месяцев назад

      Yes his map is wrong, the West Footscray line never went all the way to Ashley Street, and there was definitely no tram terminus or line in Hopkins Street at Moore Street
      into Irving Street. The line has always been from Hopkins into Leeds Street since 1921.

  • @davidbayley9588
    @davidbayley9588 Год назад

    There is an error in this video..there was never a terminus in Hopkins Street Footscray at the corner of Moore Street. The tram line at the current terminus in Leeds Street used to continue right into Irving Street and continue to Williamtown Road Yarraville (1921-1962). When the Williamstown Road route closed in 1962 the line was removed and the current terminus in Leeds Street was created.
