I like how you do reviews from the average consumers point of view. A lot of reviewers compare the cars they are reviewing to sport cars, when most buyers are just looking for a good reliable commuter vehicle.

Love this kind of "old school" sedan. Practical, not pretentious, comfortable and reliable ! Not like those stupid urban "stylish" SUV with their unbelievable price (VW T-roc, countryman, ds3 crossback...)
Toyota cares about their customers
I went out and bought one, gladly choosing it over any of the established alternatives in this sector! A friend told me that this car comes with the most effective anti-theft device in automotive history, so I said oh, what's that? He said a Toyota badge on the back and front! Oh ha ha, very funny. Well yes, it does have a Toyota badge on the back and front, and when I come down in the morning, my £30K car will still be there! Somebody else's RS6 or M5 or whatever might not be. I only have one word really for this car, and that word is outstanding. I read all the reviews, watched all the videos and inevitably, almost everyone compares the Camry unfavorably to a BMW, Audi or Merc. In my experience, pretty much any car that the motoring press don't really like will actually be a thoroughly decent car, and those will be the ones I will check out.
So, to this car. I have read many reviewers say that it could be more quiet. Well, not much! At 50mph I can hear my watch ticking, and at low speeds in EV mode, it's silent. I live on the side of a busy road, and sitting in the Camry, it's more quiet inside that car than it is inside my house. It's a haven of peace and tranquility. The ride is like a magic carpet compared to most of the offerings we get here in the UK, and roads that I used to dread driving along in my last car due to being bounced and bashed around on rock hard suspension, I can now waft along and feel hardly anything at all. The car is beautifully built, really solid and substantial feeling, not so much as one rattle or squeak, and I find the quality and design of the interior makes it such a nice place to be, I don't want to get out, the carpet mats are thicker and more luxurious than the carpet I have in my living room!
I love that it has proper buttons that you can physically touch and that will do exactly what they are supposed to do instead of jabbing away at some screen to try and control everything. I love that it has a CD player, I love that it has a proper gear selector instead of those rotary knobs or button press selectors. Over my daily commute, the Camry is returning 68MPG, and this is from a 2.5L, 2 tonne, automatic, petrol car. I think that is pretty amazing. Really the only gripe I have is that the folding door mirrors are not linked to the door locks, so you have to remember to push the button and retract them before you switch off, but other than that, I cannot fault this beautiful piece of engineering, and I feel very blessed to own it and have it to enjoy every day.

Wow! Thank you for sharing your experience! I agree with everything you said. I listened to reviewers for my last car and it wasn't that great. All they focus in is how well it does in a corner, engine noise, speed.. now i want to get something calm relaxing and this seems to be great. ;) I hope i will try it tomorrow
Had one first generation Camry Hybrid for about 9 years. I was very satisfied with this car, so last month I bougth the 2020 Premium model. Until now, my new Camry has more than fulfilled my expectations. A very comfortable ride!

It is strange, almost like a vesspa
Good to see a car that is not based on "sporting" specifications and offers comfort and economy. Long overdue
I still wonder what "sporting" really is: do they mean stiff suspension making you feel any 2 cm hump on the road up to your neck? Is it 6.5s 0-100? How is that different from 8.3s in real life? Is it tight seats that make your long drives a painful experience?
I care about internal space, reliability, low consumption, and good performance (8s 0-100 is perfectly fine). And sorry, I don't want all these toy electronics.
@@hrh2092 preach it!! I feel totally the same way. :D I made a mistake and listened to a lot of journalists in the past and all they praise are "sporty cars". I dont understand how making seats feel like a damn bench at the park makes it great... Or making the suspension so stiff you feel how bad the roads are damaged... If i wanted a sports car, I would actually get one.. Its rare to find a comfy car now, so this is a blessing and im glad i bought it. It rides like a dream, and 95 percent of driving is in traffic or slow driving. I wont sacrifice comfort for that 1 percent of the time where i want to be a retarded and go around 1 corner a bit quicker. Oooooh how much fun that is.
We have a 1997 Camry in the family with more than 200,000 miles on the clock and it just keeps going and going and going. I see no reason why the new hybrid version shouldn’t go on even longer, with replacement batteries over time. Nobody knows more about reliable hybridisation than Toyota. PS I agree the design aesthetic has something Mondeoesque about it, particularly in side profile.
These are the best, most realistic car reviews of them all. Not about a presenter's ego.....but the car! Another excellent review.
A friend of mine bought one of these this year, in Ireland. Nice car and yes, the info/tainment system is a bit...clunky. However, here in Ireland you CAN use apple car play/android auto.
Completely at the 'other end' of the scale my wife bought a Yaris Hybrid. I was initially sceptical but, as you say, once you adapt your driving style to the CVT it's not difficult and feels totally natural. Smooth and refind; push the accelerator pedal hard and it sounds quite raucous, but thats not the way to drive the hybrid.
Gentle acceleration and once cruising it barrels along, keeping up with - and often outpacing - other conventional cars. Quiet and smooth too.
As for fuel consumption? Lets just say LOTS of kilometres per litre. Quite astonishing. The electric and petrol motor working together.
Its brilliant. (And I never thought I'd say that)

In Australia we Get the 2.5/ 2.5 Hybrid/ V6, We also use the Camry as a Taxi and Work car as it’s cheap, efficient, good space and good for road trips.

I really like how both Corolla and Camry have addressed visibility issues by making front and rear side windows larger.

It has always boggled my mind this is considered a mid-range car. I have the Executive VIP trim. I've never come across a Passat or a C-class that has power reclining rear seats but whatever.

Thanks for the review, l have personally seen this car. One of my neighbours got this either late last year or early this year. As he parks it quite close to where the scooters, motorbikes are parked in the underground parking, l have had a chance to study it quite closely whilst warming up my motorbike. Sadly l have not seen anything of the inside because most of the times it is just parked there and once in a while when l see it moving l cannot see anything of the interior.
It looks very good from the outside, the version l have seen is a pearl-like, off white sort of creamish version with these sparkles in the paint, it suits that one very well. So naturally, l am very happy to finally see a review of a car l have been seeing for quite a while and been wondering about. Having also seen the new Lexus ES version which looks similar and which to me looks quite beautiful l think it is a beautiful car.
By the way, in the market this side you get about three sort of related products: you have one sold as the Mark X which has similar dimensions often two wheel drive, rear wheel driven or all wheel drive. Then this is the Camry which if l am not mistaken is mostly front wheel drive. The final one is the Crown.
All these cars are more less the same size l think the smallest engine you can get on these three is a 2.5litre going as high as 3.5 in the Mark X and about 4.5 in the Crown.
From the styling l summarise the Mark X is aimed at younger drivers who like a quickish car with good looks and which can be modified which is also quite different in interior from a typical Camry model. As our family owns a very old Mark X l can testify to this.
The Camry is seen as something for the more mature driver who is more interested in the comfort and reliability of the car. So the design is quite conservative and safe and even the interior is the same. This is totally different from the Mark X which is quite innovative, to me at least and experimental.
The last car, the Crown is more like the pinnacle of this class. l think in the Americas they get the Avalon. Here you get the Crown. This is a huge beast and basically the most comfortable and more powerful. Of the three it is the most premium in terms of pricing, features, power and overall brand positioning.
Having seen versions from the late 00s to the current models l can say the styling is bold and distinct and well-executed, it is not as aggressive or as divisive as the Lexus with that spindle grille. l like Lexus but hate that grill. With the Crown, they somehow manage to have all of that a distinct and well-designed car which is pleasing to behold.
Lastly, l just wanted to say here when it comes to SUVs the king for our market is the Highlander which is very common on the roads here. l think this would fit into what is called a medium-sized vehicle. l do not have much information as l have no firsthand information. However, it looks very good but there is one l have seen sometimes which l think is aimed at the US market: the Sequoia, now that is one huge and good looking brute from my perspective.
l hope at some point you could do a review or comparison of the Camry/Mark X/Crown and Highlander/Sequoia models.
Anyway thanks again, really enjoyed it, it has been a car l have been seeing a lot and been marvelling at. Keep up the great work.

Autogefühl, Camry used aluminum trunk and hood, it feels light for better materials, not a negative. Light but no effect on rigidity.

Hey Thomas, I would really love a comparison video about 'standard' sedans, thinking about Toyota Camry, Skoda Superb, Peugeot 508, VW Passat, etc. As you say, anything below them is on the cheap end and everything above them more or less luxury class. I think that's really a sweet spot in the segment.
I can't decide between this car and the Superb to do 50k miles per year as taxi. Any advice? Are maintenance savings for the Camry really that much?

I expected this to be not very good! It sounds very smooth and quiet. Maybe a little road noise. For what it is being sold for it also seems pretty good value.

We just bought the 2019 Camry Hybrid SL and we love it! $46K AUD for top-end model (we ended up paying $42K AUD). It's a comfortable car that's easy on the petrol. Our top-end model has a lot of automatic features (auto head lights, auto wipers, audible alerts, GPS, 12 speaker stereo etc.).

In all honesty, I wish auto makers pay attention to consumer's real needs such as space, comfort, reliability, and price and stop focusing on toy electronics such as ACC, self-driving, LED lighting, etc.

Good point. I got me a Camry because the ES 300h didn't convince me due to its price difference. The Lexus ES is a wonderful car though, no doubt.

Did not see it completely and therefore I am not sure whether you have mentioned that the following features are not available for the Camry (at least not available for German customers): tow bar (not even low duty one for bicycles), sun roof, roof luggage rack. No idea why Toyota is following such a sales strategy in Germany!?

I met a taxi driver in Dubai drover his cammery 4,5 million kilometres, he aid no major issues,
I bought a new 2019 Toyota Camry SE yesterday. I love the classic shifter as opposed to other manufacturers who get fancy with the automatic
shifter and you have to learn where the P/R/N/D is located; Buttons in Honda are even worse because you can't shift by feel. I don't like Honda's
turbo lag, high maintenance CVT, noisy interior, and stuckon iPad as the center console.

I don't understand the criticism on interior noise. You didn't show any noise testing / db numbers. Autobild (german, biased against Toyota, not in favor of them) test numbers: 68db at 130 km/h
. That means it's literally one of the quietest cars in this price range. Some people seem to complain only because the noise difference between cruising and acceleration is big or because you hear more wind noise because the engine is that quiet.

@@autogefuehl What "comments from owners"? I looked for them but only saw one comment from someone generalizing all Toyotas and Hondas, he didn't even pretend to own a current Camry hybrid. And even if someone did how do you know it's true? He could just be lying. The db (decibel) numbers are a simple fact that can easily be measured. RUclips comments are not...
db measures are useless unless you measure different vehicles on same day, same road, same tyres, same weather. "Simple facts" can also vary a lot. I can just say what I feel when I drive a car. And I didnt feel it was loud, but I did feel that it was louder than other cars I have tested at higher speeds. Again, not bad at all. I love the car.

I am a Camry owner (driven over 6000 kilometers with it and owned previously VW Passat 2015 1.4 tsi). As I have already commented elsewhere at this review, Camry is a LOT noisier car than Passat at the same roads. Of course tires, road condition, weather etc affect the result of the measurements. If we start from the wind noise ... Passat has almost zero wind noise at 100 km/h. Only at very windy weather you can hear something, other times nothing. This is partly due to the fact that Passat has lot thicker windscreen and extra thick side windows. Those make a huge difference to wind noise results. Tire noise has two different areas. When driving at smooth tarmac, Camry is relatively quiet car (not good but decent). In Finland, where almost all the tarmac is rough, due to use of studded winter tires, tire noise is awful. Noise is also at that kind of frequency range that really "stings" you, when you have to listen it for a long time. Unfortunately I do not have db measurements of my old car, but Camry's results (at 100 km/h real speed) vary from 65-67 db (smooth tarmac) 71-72.5 db (rough). And trust me, the latter numbers mean awful noise. Passat was a LOT quieter car, when it comes to the tire noise. The difference between smooth/rough tarmac noise was also a lot smaller. It is obvious that Toyota has saved weight by not adding sufficient sound proofing. I ordered extra noise insulation, and the people doing that said that the car skin is very thin which means that all the noise "comes through" the skin. And I believe them, since I was watching the trunk sound proofing. If one pulled the partially glued noise mat, the whole skin bent. Car doors are also very thin without proper sound proofing, which also adds to the noise. Door seals do not cover the whole lower part of the doors (more noise) Front wheel arches have plastic inner cover which is directly visible from behind the front doors (direct route for noise to the cabin) and so on..... The fight was between the fuel consumption by less weight v good sound proofing.... Sound proofing lost the match.

One of the main reasons I can't stand Toyota/Honda, their NVH sucks. They just don't focus on it enough. They're so loud on the highway from wind noise to tire noise. After getting out of a long drive in Camry, you will feel it.

Compare that to other cars. It's literally one of the quietest cars in this price range. Noise level testing numbers prove that. German journalists just complain about the noise difference during full acceleration.
Could not agree more. The worst thing with Camry is the awful road noise coming from tires. Wind noise one can tolerate. Wind noise could be solved easily by thicker windscreen and side windows, like in Passat ... But weight saving has gone over driving comfort, and the end result is not good. I would rather consume 0.1-0.3 liters more fuel than listen to the noise. I did extra noise insulation to the car, but it helps just a little bit 0.5-1.0 db). All that work should be done at design phase and at the manufacturing. There is no sense of dismantling the whole car, putting noise insulation there and rebuilding it again ...

@@harmdegraaf5579 Just basic noise insulation was done. Noise insulation spray (don't know the exact manufacturer for that) was sprayed to the car wheel arches and bottom. Sound deadening mat was glued to the car trunk, and a layer of removable sound deadening mat was also added to trunk (since it is the worst source of road noise). Did help a little bit, but the car is still noisy, when driving on rough tarmac. And tarmac is always rough here in Finland, because we have to use studded tires at Winter, and they "eat" the road surface. If you use Camry only on smooth/new tarmac, then the noise levels are OK. Not good, but not also too irritating. If you drive 110 km/h or faster, then also the wind noise will be an issue.

I am really struggling which one to choose, if Camry or Mazda6 2,5l. Both are beautiful. Mazda has more comfort features to offer, but Toyota has its hybrid system.

@@rvrabevska Camry won and I don't regret. The fuel efficiency is really as great as Toyota claims. But I am pretty sure I would'nt regret Mazda 6 choice too :-)

Toyota UK stopped Avensis production but replaced it with assembly of Toyota Corolla. Now, Toyota Japan exports the Camry to Europe (e.g. EU 27 plus United Kingdom)

@@VeikoPekkenen Interior quality in the ES is on another level however. And it's much quieter and refined. Keep in mind that the base ES already has more equipment than the fully loaded Camry.

@@VeikoPekkenen hmm I"m from Germany, lets not forget that every country has different prices. In your case I would take the Camry too
If you have that extra money in your pocket, do not hesitate, and go for the Lexus. Even if some of the components are the same, Lexus has a lot better build quality and comfort. I tested both Camry and Lexus, and had to choose Camry because of that small money issue :)

In the US the Camry is a much better value. Easy, cost free 300000 miles. Much less complicated & driver confusion. Huge. Not sure if Hybrid battery, power supply or CVT is as reliable as proven ICE with automatic transmissions. Doesn't have the $20k per car profit margin built into German cars. Nice family car.
Toyota have been building hybrids since the 1980s. Their systems are incredibly reliable. Some Prius's have done more than 500k without problems.

Great review Thomas, The wide arse is kinda "Panamerish" helps with the loadspace. The dash is typical of Toyota, completely incoherent compared to the sleek exterior, typical crappy Japanese buttons but at least you can control the AC with buttons (ahem Peugeot) Screen is too small for a 2018 car and below the air vents which means you need to look down and across and not just across, basic safety measure missed. I love it and it will last forever, finally a good looking Camry

Most Dubai taxis are one of these. I've seen many of them with 600 000+km on the clock and still going strong, and Dubai taxi drivers aren't exactly gentle.

Comparison to the Supurb proves to me that VW should just switch bulk sales to Skoda and keep VW for purist brand like Arteon, GTI, R, SUVs (course), GLI, plus cars we lost like eos, or ones we’ve never seen like Transporter, Golf Convertible, GTE (amazes they didn’t bring that INSTEAD of the e-golf for major US and egolf for Cali etc.

Toyota hybrids are nice cars, but lack of Android Auto is a deal breaker for me.
Why??? I've been using my Android and my wife's Iphone in my last 4 cars in various places including drivers' and other positions for last 10 years!!!! All one needs is some ingenuity and bluetooth. Iphone and Android play are only for technically challenged people who are satisfied with 50% of Iphone and Android features....plus, bluetooth and phone's casting capability enables the ability to cast your phone to a larger display...far better than the the fixed size of car display.
An excellent review. About photoles, I suspect they are noticed because using 18" wheels and 235/45 tyres. I'm thinking about buying an unit with 17" and 215/55 tyres (more comfort). Viele Grüsse aus Spanien!

I confirm. I upgraded aloys to 18 from base 17 and less confort observed. But looks is mich better :) i love this car.
I drove the 18 and it was good more unless the potholes where huge. So the 17 are alot better over bad roads? And overall do you like the car? Cause I want know whats it like to live with it. Thanks :D

I don't think Honda sells the Accord in Japan? Correct me if I'm wrong though. Seems to be a US/China/Thailand market car. If it's not made for the JDM market, I think it would be a very rare thing to bring it to Europe. My old superstitions of JDM/EU cars that are tailored for the US market is that they are.. worse. The Camry is a JDM car though. And I think they probably share some of the spare parts with the Lexus ES, that is already sold here.
I love Honda - but to be honest their designers have smoked something bad the last years. The current Accord looks like some low version of the ZD - an extra hideous car :P

They sell Accords in South, North America, China and some other Asian markets, I own 2018 Accord(10th gen) with 1.5 T engine,192hp, and I loved, in U.S we have 3 engine options, 1.5 T, 2.0T, and 2.0 hybrid.
If Camry hybrid get ok sales numbers in Europe, Accord, at least hybrid option, should get opportunity to meet European customers.

In Germany, the trims of Camry are stripped down, only two are available. I can't get one with electric seats but no toy electronics (lane assist, ACC, etc.).

Hopefully you will get the new Honda Accord in Europe sometime soon. It drives significantly better than the Camry in terms of road feel.

I already did that ... And yes those hinges can crush things. You just have to be careful when you pack something in the trunk. No high stuff to the trunk sides at the front of the trunk. It is not a big issue because trunk is that big.
I'd buy a Toyota, but personally I prefer the Honda because of the sporty driving, the engines are practically just as reliable if Toyota didn't stay a little better today!
I wonder if it is just me, but the use of different languages in the various menus (German and English) annoys me... Be consistent, my dear Toyota! Never paid attention to this before, but now I've seen it, I cannot unsee it... :P Great car though. Always loved Toyota for their products, productionmethods and quality(control). My parents have been driving Toyota's for over 30 years now. I can still picture the face of my horrified mom when back in 2005 the battery died in the '01 Avensis and the car wouldn't start... Absolutely terrible... ;) Oh, and I remember a flat tire in '15 in the '13 Verso S... A truly sad moment... :P Apart from that, no trouble whatsoever. Please Toyota, keep doing what you're doing.

As far as I know Ford is using the Toyota Hybrid drivetrain in the Mondeo. So it should be the same in that regard. Maybe software wise tuned a little bit different.

Why isn’t the 301hp 3.5L V6 offered in the European market Camrys? Is it because there wouldn’t be enough demand for the V6 in Europe?
Plus a lot of EU countries have taxation based on engine displacement. Where I live everything >2L is considered a luxury vehicle and that comes with significant penalties. Event this 2.5 hybrid seems ridiculous. The taxation system is made around the small turbo engines where even a very large car barely needs >1.6L.
@Tobi as Wrong . It would meet the emissions rules easily. They would just have to pay a lot of Co2 taxes and no one buys thirsty engines in non-performance cars in europe, those are the real reasons.

About the seats. I have a Camry with the same seats as in the Camry Thomas reviews. It was sold to me as if the seats are genuine leather. But they are not. It is some kind of imitation leatherlook. So Thomas, no animal skins here!
Both are available. In Germany, you only get animal skin. In the US, u get fabric, a sport leatherette seat and a sport animal skin seat.
So it depends on what is sold on your market and what trim the car is

Toyota need to put out a 4 wheel drive on high/low suspension in estate form. It would put it up to the exclusive of that club of Audi Allroad, Volvo V90 CC and Merc All Terrane. Lexus could make an a amazing estate powerhouse with the ES series model, forget the F word! just a very fast luxurious family estate.

@@autogefuehl Thank you. But there is still a range for the fully charged battery, like MB E300 has around 3km range with the 0.8kWh battery. I understand that Toyotas have a bigger battery and just wandered what would be the range of this car on pure battery and also how powerful is the electric motor itself.
In normal traffic, maybe few hundred meters, not kilometers. And EV mode is switched immediately off, if you accelerate just a tiny bit or drive over 50 km/h. EV mode is also only available if the battery is full (very rare case). To me it is a completely useless feature. Old Toyota Auris hybrid had "B-mode", which increased the recuperation and did "brake" the car harder, when releasing the accelerator pedal. That would be extremely useful feature at city driving, make using real brakes rare case , and charge the battery more aggressively.

Hi Max la menace - I think I can understand - it will be the simple fact that most car manufacturers now realise the benefits and believe in online media advertisement and provide new test cars for the press to test. And others don't. I guess Thomas has very good contacts throughout the entire auto industry in Europe (and the US?), but a few manufacturers don't release press cars to RUclips or online, and they release only a few cars to traditional magazine journalists - eg Renault, Nissan and a few others...?
