I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well ruclips.net/user/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.
Makes me feel better with my most recent reel purchase.. ordered a Revo SX online for $108 and they sent me a case of 2 rather than just one.. called them up and they said keep it. I was getting a lot of “don’t go for Abu just get a Shimano or Daiwa” Either way 2 reels for $108, can’t beat that🤷🏽♂️
Cheapest reel I have is a Lews American Camo. It's a great reel and works fine. I just like nice things, so that's really the only reason to bump up in price range. That and durability. A well maintained aluminum reel will last decades. I have a Curado K with a Scorpion MGL spool. Reeling it feels like running your finger across butter. I absolutely love it. But honestly I can do everything with the 50 dollar reel that I do with that, it just feels nicer.
@@sickassbeats I agree but Most of the time Japanese is better, in the fishing world anyways, in any other aspect of life AMERICA all the way baby. What is your favorite reel to use? And would you rather spinning or baitcaster?
@@mattolivo I CANT REALLY DISAGREE WITH THAT BCUZ ITS TRUE.. The reel is Japanese either way being an Okuma Helios SX wit a ST. Croix mojo bass. BAITCASTING
Lews tournament pro speed spool original TP1SHL from 2013, I get 35-50 yards out of it still and haven’t cleaned or lubed it from the day I got it in 2014
I think it was a fair test. Some of the reels were new and some had been used before. Now you have a good baseline but it would be interesting to do it again after another season of use to see how the less expensive reel holds up and performs after a season of use.
Thank you very much for this comparison. I just got a bait caster reel last year and I have been practicing a lot. I know it takes a lot of practice. I only cast 60 to 75 feet. But it takes time. I love this video. You are the only one who did this true test. You are awesome!
Great test. I agree with the results. My Abu Garcia’s are my farthest casters. Revo X casts just as far as the SX, not as finicky with just mag brakes and $69 less.
Great fun to watch. I look at value for money I'm very poor, sadly. That being said, my next reel will be the pacifun alloy m. This test not withstanding I like VERY MUCH features and benefits at its price point. I've paid more (mach crush, mach 2, speed spool lfs.) And been VERY disappointed. Speed spool lfs has been good. As far as the other two, I feel like I got duped. Some combos catch fish and some catch fishermen.
Watch Piscifun and Amazon, they sometimes go on sale. That's when I bought mine last fall. Love that reel, easy to cast without backlashes, smooth drag, and comfortable in the hand. I have it paired with a cheapo Shakespeare Excursion rod from Walmart, which was only $20. It's my favorite cheap combo.
Idk about distance but I have an older Lews (upgrade from the speed spool from a few years ago), SLX, and SLX XT and the XT just has the smoothest cast. I remember really liking that Lews a few years back but now that it’s almost 10 years old, it’s starting to really show it’s age. Still casts pretty well. The XT casts 1/4oz cranks with ease right out of the box. The SLX was rough but not bad. Curious if they make a newer version of the XT next year following the new A series.
Great test! Would love to see some Okuma baitcasters tested. Their Komodo is built tough but its permanently engaged levelwind wrecks casting distance, sadly.
Very good video. I've seen these test on various reels before, so I have a few questions concerning the casting process: #1. what is the load pattern of this rod (stuff or light)? #2 How much line do you have out before your cast? # What is the wind speed and direction during the cast? #4 what is your ABS setting at? I use mainly a Diawa Tatula CT and SV and average at least 130' to 150' a cast on a good day.
I believe your testing is valid for the recorded distances using the same rod for all the reels. However; it shows what the reels do on that powered rod. When you match the rod power closely to the lure weight the distances will increase. Rod power is as important to casting distance as the reel. You might try using different power rods on the top two reels and you will likely see the distances increase or decrease. Just because the rod maker suggests a recommended range of lure and line weight doesn’t always turn out correct. The length of the rod plays an important part in casting distance too.
Thanks for taking the time to do this type of comparison, it's a lot of fun to watch! I recently bought the Lew's Tournament MP Speed Spool LFS and love it, was surprised at how much easier it is to cast than even my Scorpion DC (and that's saying something), and the distance has been surprising.
I'm taking the often forgotten Revo SX. My regular Revo bombs lures. They have different lines but I'd say it outcasts my SLX XT and my Tatula CT. My Lews Tournament MP is probably my favorite so far.
Oh dang!!! I definitely think the Abu stuff gets overlooked with all the hype on Shimano and Diawa. I'd love to see comparisons with in each brand. From a budget range to the highest you can get your hands on. Then a final overview of all of the notable results. Love the casting comparisons!!
This was a fascinating test that required a lot of time and effort from you-and your dad!. Many thanks to both of you. I fish inshore saltwater exclusively and use a round reel. I would LOVE to see you repeat this test with a half-dozen round reels. My very inexpensive Kast King Rover has held up well and performs smoothly, but even with the friction brake backed way of,f its casting distances are disappointing. It would be great to find out what might be achieved with other round reels, like the Daiwa Millionaires, Abu Ambassadeurs, and Shimano Cardiffs and Calcuttas. Best, Chris (in Maine)
I would have thought Daiwa for sure cause that's one of their big sale points with that type line guide. Would be interesting to see a series of these vids like $99 or less reels , $100 - $199, and $200/up. Do a list for each price range, then a master list comparing all of them
Yeah I just bought the Diawa Tatula elite. And their big selling point on the elite is that it will cast further than other reels. I'm only able to get 106 ft out of a half ounce lure. I'm very disappointed.
I run my Slx xt with one centrifugal and 3 on the mag and consistently bomb it out. I’ve measured the casting distance and it has reached almost 50 yards for me before. I feel like it takes a bit to get it dialed in but once u have it it kills.
Curious do you have any videos that show the different actions of rods and what lures to throw on which, also what reel speed you prefer for different lures?
I have that Shimano SLX XT and love it. It may not cast far but the feel and drag are spot on. I love my Lews as well and does cast better than my Shimano.
I haven't tested 3 other casters I have, but so far the Black max, has been impressive with casts so far. Set to maybe 7, it launches to the other side of the pond I practice at. I have a Lews speed spool, and the Shimano SLX dc, can't wait to see who's the casting king of my bunch.
Nice job! I think I said it before but I’ll say it again: I’d love to see you out there with at least one other angler, eg, your pops, Dizzle, TJ, etc., taking turns casting each reel and averaging those numbers together to get a larger sample size. It would be awesome too if you do it indoors at a basketball court or something like that.
Marker flags… Just a couple of bucks at the ol’ depot, save a little time and running around for your pops, and gives a good visual, which is not a bad thing when making viewable content. Big fan of this style vid though, I love to see in action “real world” comparison. $50-$200 is a good all around range for regular folk, anything more is just a novelty to us. Not to say I wouldn’t still love to see a DC Battle Royal go down. All n’ all, good but surprising showdown. Can’t wait for the next one.
I like these casting tests. Very believable and repeatable. I practice casting in my yard and have found my experiments are very similar in results to your tests. I have been told there are professional bass anglers who can cast a crankbait over 75 yards with regularity. I just can’t believe it.
I've also used my Alloy M with 20lb braid, you really have to try hard to backlash. Maybe having 12 magnets is the trick? Smooth drag too, really a pleasure to fish with.
Would the tension that the line is spooled onto the spool make any difference on the next cast? The grass tuggs then the lure pop's up out of the grass then the line gets spooled onto the spool quite a few wraps without any tension then the lure gets tugged again by the grass🤷 where as the water pulls consistently on your lure the whole time and there for the fishing line tension is wrapped on the spool differently. Definitely interesting video.
i was surprised by the piscifun, but liked the Lew's a lot, especially for the price point. I'd like to see them spooled up with braid and a fluoro leader with the same bait and what the distances are on a low wind day.
Debo, really cool video, got me off my butt to go outside today and test it myself. I have 4 Tatula elites, so out of curiosity I took one outside and put a 3/8 ounce on, 50lb Berkeley X9 braid, got 133, 136, 136. I backed off the magnetic brakes to around 4, as I’m more comfortable with that exact setup. The magnetic brakes also have more effect on the end of a cast vs. the spool tension knob which has more effect on the start of the cast. That also might be why I got a tad farther than your tests.
Hey Debo, thanks for the comparison. You could have used a casting plug, they come in a bright orange color, and it would've made it easier for your dad to see where it landed, compared to the lure that blended in with the grass... Just a thought...
Love these "nerdy" videos lol.. I was rooting for the RevoSX!! Absolutely love mine. I also have a Revo4 ($99 reel I think) and I seem to get better distance with that reel. With that being said... maybe do a reel test from same brand🤔
With xt I put two brakes on the inside 3 outside and I open the tension knob where the side to side play is out and man I can bomb it I'm going to try and measure mine and see how close it is to yours
Nice video. I started with baitcasters during the pandemic. All of my reels are under a $100. I have the LFS, 2 Alloy Ms, and a Daiwa CA 80. I like them all, but the CA 80 might be my favorite. I don't see much about it, but it is very smooth and easy to dial in.
I purchased my first Revo probably like 15 years ago...haven't bought a different compact bait caster since. They are super solid, they are cheap, they are easy to service and as you can see they cast a mile. I still have my first Revo, and it still casts like it's new. Revo compact baitcasters, Shimano spinning, and Daiwa Lexa 300's and 400's for the big boys. That's my arsenal.
I was disappointed in the SLX because I love those reels. But my best casts so for have come from the Concept Z and my longest actually from the Origin C (I don’t know what I did different, it just shot out there like a bullet, but it always casts well though).I have some newer reels I haven’t gotten to use much (health issues this year) so I expect this to change.
I'm curious as to how the brakes were setup on the SLX XT. Do you remember if you had 1 internal brake on or 2. Also what was the external brake set to. I've seen videos of it casting much farther. Although i own the reel i have not even taken it out yet. Shoot i got like 5 brand new reel and rod combo's i have yet to take out for their first time. I have a bit of a problem spending money on fishing gear lol.
I have 3 of the standard Shimano SLX. Two of them are 8 speed and one is a 7 speed. While I really like the feel and smoothness of them, I have noticed that no matter how much time you spend tuning them, they are a little inconsistent on their casting distance. I've always wondered if it was an issue with the factory bearings or what but all 3 do it. Its most noticeable when you're trying to cast into pockets with like heavy reeds around and out of nowhere you're having to lay on the thumb much heavier than the previous cast so you don't overshoot it and get hung. It's annoyed me a lot to where I end up using all of my Lews reels more often than not, even if they don't feel as smooth as the Shimano.
The Alloy M looks like a super solid Reel and the Reel Test Dude had great things to say about it and loved the way you could skip with it, also Aluminum Frame….
Awesome vid, i was looking at a couple of these reels last night, the lews, piscifun, and abu, right on time !!! the Abu Garcia Revo SX is $99 on amazon !!!
You're right Debo, the test wasn't scientific at all. Personally, the cheapest one (the Piscifun) gets my vote for one main reason. IT's the Cheapest price!!
I had to pick up the alloy m. It went on sale for $60 and everyone keeps saying how well it returns for the price at $80 so i had to try it. Just ordered yesterday. I'm picking up a scorpion DC today as well.
What is the major thing you look for in a Baitcasting Reel to see if it’s a good reel other than an Aluminum frame, I wouldn’t buy Graphite unless it was a Shimano or Team Daiwa etc. the Tatula lol
Good video. Better than the one from last year. The test is fun for me to watch. I have a buddy that is always wanting to match me cast for cast. But we don't use alot of the the same equipment at all. I figured it would be a Lew's to take the title. At the same time, my Abu red max is one of my best distance reels. I end up favoring my Lew's over even my Daiwa. Then the aspect of single brake to a dual brake system,.... I feel there's no comparison. The dual brake is my favorite
Now I own a Lew's Mach Smash spinning combo. I've used it 3 times and I've yet to catch a fish on it. Of course the weather has been a nightmare to try to fish. Now it's going to be really cold before I get a decent chance. I actually can cast a bit farther than my other spinning gear and 2 of them are Daiwa Whisker's 1300!! Thank you Lew's
I have a few of the reels you tested (SLX XT, Lews, Revo SX) and a different Piscifun. They're all good for different things, but the Revo is the toughest of the bunch.
Love these videos Debo, like to see that new okuma hakai getting tested. It looks a lovely reel, not sure the 100 size would work for inshore fishing which is what I do, personally use curado 201 hg’s. but as I do bank/wade distance is massive for me, so I’d love to find a workhorse saltwater safe baitcaster that can really cover a lot of distance. To be honest I definitely still trying to find the sweet spot on my reels and can always improve my casting techniques. So your videos are very helpful.
I have a mix of Shimano, Daiwa and Piscifun reels and I while I haven't taken a tape measure to a cast it feels noticeable that the Shimano's don't cast as far as the others. That said, I have mostly Shimanos and I really like the way they feel to fish and they have good smooth feeling drag which while not normally important can sometimes be a factor. I was skeptical about the T wing thing on the Daiwa but it casts great even compared to my DC reels from Shimano. I think my next reel will either be a budget or high end reel from Daiwa just not sure which yet lol
Love the Nerd vids man! This was awesome, please more comparison vids! Maybe compare reels of same price point or features and maybe rods from same price points? Maybe even how well a reel does when you have less line, ya know after you have to cut some off a few times.
Debo I need your help figuring something out. What Lews Baitcaster is as similar as possible with a Quantum Vapor? Go Hawks that gotta win this weekend!!!
Would love to see you do cast review on company called favorite rods cause I use there rods and absolutely love them best rod I have ever used so far and would love to see how there baitcaster soleus ccs does
Really enjoyed this evaluation, you’ve just solved a problem as to which new reel I need. Since TJ at tackle junkie says it’s always your fault I also subscribed to your channel! Thanks Again!!
Excellent test. Of course, 5 different of the same brands will be somewhat different. But I really doubt the Bass. How far did you cast to catch him. J/K
I would appreciate and be thankful if you would review the 99$ combo's. I got two for Christmas (13 fishing origan fate and favorite army) I would very much like to hear your opinion. 13 fishing is so smooth its almost uncanny. Though it has been the strangest to dial in Favorite army has been the most difficult to dial in.
Out of the two different side retrieves of the real which one do you find you have better hook sets with? Your dominant hand or the other. I'm left-handed but my strong arm is my right however all of my reels are right hand retrieve. My next real will be left hand retrieve
No surprise with the Daiwa as you didn't make any adjustments on it like you did most of the other reels. I never set any reel at 9. The Bruin for a no name reel did well and the Abu Garcia and more of the high end reels were more consistent.
I recently bought a daiwa tatula 100. Thing cast so good I bought another. They look sick too. I’m a shimano guy but got the reels on discount. I hate to say they cast better than shimano reels in their price point.

Nice video. I started with baitcasters during the pandemic. All of my reels are under a $100. I have the LFS, 2 Alloy Ms, and a Daiwa CA 80. I like them all, but the CA 80 might be my favorite. I don't see much about it, but it is very smooth and easy to dial in.
I just bought a cr80 and it's amazing. It might become my go-to reel for future purchases.
I think there’s a wind advisory in effect-Deadpool 🤣
I purchased my first Revo probably like 15 years ago...haven't bought a different compact bait caster since. They are super solid, they are cheap, they are easy to service and as you can see they cast a mile. I still have my first Revo, and it still casts like it's new. Revo compact baitcasters, Shimano spinning, and Daiwa Lexa 300's and 400's for the big boys. That's my arsenal.
Great cast camparisons. For me I will stick to Diawa a mnd Shimano. There build quality and finish is unmatched.
Have to admire the accuracy!
You should review the Lew's Pro SP. Im curious how much it really helps skipping and I also hear it can double as a BFS reel.
I would like to see the bb1 pro in there. I wonder how the Curado K 200 would fair.
? Wonder what the width of each spool is. And maybe how much line they each hold.
I have the Revo SX and I love it! I bought a Revo stx today can't wait to set it up. These videos are awesome thanks for the content man.
Abu Garcia has always been the sleeper.Cant go wrong for the price.Great content as always.Greetings from lake ontario.
Love my Lew's and Abu's. The Revo is a great reel and I'm not surprised at all with the outcome because I've used the hell out of it!
As a shot put and discus thrower, and fisherman, this was a really cool combination of two of my favorite things.
Love all of your videos. I was wondering what you thought about Kistler reels.
It's good, i've got two and they are hard to backlash. Mabye a tad noisier than others. However, I think my Kistler reels came a tad dry.
Great information on all of the reels thank you
What is the major thing you look for in a Baitcasting Reel to see if it’s a good reel other than an Aluminum frame, I wouldn’t buy Graphite unless it was a Shimano or Team Daiwa etc. the Tatula lol
It's a super solid reel. I'm kind of feeling silly for not using it more...
Great video have you tested the casting distance on the Daiwa tatula ct? I was wondering how it compared to the elite
I'm really shocked that the tatula didn't do better, definitely keep doing these types of videos. Great work Debo!!!!
You and me both! I said at the beginning it would win. Maybe I need to take more time to test and dial it in.
I can only get 106 ft out of mine with a half ounce lure.
What’s that camo bag in the vid? Love that color camo
I have a newer version Diawa Tatula SV TW103 and they have shallower spools but it casts like a beast effortlessly!
Thanks for the idea!
I'm sold on Lews plus I like left hand retrieve. Thanks Debo I enjoyed this.
Glad you enjoyed!
Debo I need your help figuring something out. What Lews Baitcaster is as similar as possible with a Quantum Vapor? Go Hawks that gotta win this weekend!!!
Would love to see you do cast review on company called favorite rods cause I use there rods and absolutely love them best rod I have ever used so far and would love to see how there baitcaster soleus ccs does
I would like to see how the shimano DC models work!! Like the slx dc and the curado dc! Pair the slx xt with the slx dc! Thanks for the video
Really enjoyed this evaluation, you’ve just solved a problem as to which new reel I need. Since TJ at tackle junkie says it’s always your fault I also subscribed to your channel! Thanks Again!!
Would like to see this with the piscifun carbon xcs
Have been running the SLX for a while. This has me thinking of picking up a tatula or revo. Good work as always.
If you can and if it's possible the next one you do can it be DC reels in the mix?
I got my first baitcaster , a Lews custom XP and love how it feels , but can’t cast as far as I’d like . I need one that will send my lure a mile 😂😂
Great info, Debo. Pleasantly surprised the Piscifun Alloy X did so well. What was Stubby Dog's 5-cast average?
Not the first one to comment but man I can’t get enough of your videos. I’d love to see the shimano win.
appreciate that a lot!
Honestly really good reviews, you do it right.
Excellent test. Of course, 5 different of the same brands will be somewhat different. But I really doubt the Bass. How far did you cast to catch him. J/K
A DC reel like the SLX DC would have been nice to see in the mix and how it compares and at the price fits in with the other reels.
I'm wonky when it comes to this LOL
Lol i hear ya on that one. All my casting reels are right hand but my spinning is ALWAYS left handed. I can switch left to right with casting..
Spinning reel vs bait casting reel cast test would be interesting.
I have the Revo SX and the MGX high dollar. But want to try the Lew's. Good vid.
No surprise here.. love my revo's!
What about testing the Revo Beast X?
Nice reel review for all reels. Don’t have one over $140 but I like all of the casting I get. The diawa tatula ct seems to be the best.
your "testing" rod is very similar to my fishing rod. i use a Lews CARBONfire speed stick 7'2" med/heavy Fast action.
