I bought the Aries II back when you first reviewed it, and recently updated it to the 12th anniversary firmware. It's an awesome DAC. The sound stage is indeed extremely wide and immersive. I am very happy with that purchase. Denafrips has sent another firmware update that I haven't had the opportunity to install. Love their customer service!

Can attest to Geshelli's customer service. Bought a J2 used from Ebay, and one of the channels went out. Called Geshelli thinking maybe they'd repair it for a fee, if at all, with no warranty. Turns out their free repair policy covers all items-pre-owned or new-even if purchased from a third party. They replaced the board at no extra charge; only had to pay roundtrip shipping. Thanks for the rec 🙏🏾

I just received my Geshelli J2 DAC (AK4493) - less than three weeks to my door from the time of order. It opened up my Elac Debut 6.2 speakers. It's like I went from listening to mono to stereo. Detail is amazing. My progression of DACs was Hifiberry DAC+ to the Schiit Modi+ (v2) then the Geshelli. Love, love, love the Geshelli DAC! For the living room with my Vandersteen 2 speakers I am considering the Denafrips Ares 2.

I own both the Topping E50 and the Denafrips Ares II and I love them both, it's great having two different but excellent options. Then if they're not going into my main system, they're going into either Topping L50 or Geshelli Archel 3 Pro headphone amps. Spoiled for choice. The great thing about high quality inexpensive options is that you can often get two or three (or ten) for the price of an expensive option.

  • @auroman302

I’ve had both the Schitt and the Topping discussed here, and just recently bought the Chord Mojo 2. I know it is designed to be a headphone dac (maybe why not mentioned here?), but I have it connected to my stereo with a high quality 3.5 to rca and well, for me it is better than both of the ones mentioned, by a bit. It has the dimensionality that Randy mentioned about the Denafrips, and with great punch and detail. I got it used for $550, but even new it is well under 1K, with volume control, EQ, etc. Should be considered.

I commented on your review for the SMSL SU-1, that I just ordered it the day before you posted the review. You asked what I think about it so here it is. I replaced my SMSL M100 with it because the micro USB connection is failing, so this is only compared to that DAC. I have it as a secondary set up connected to my laptop and going to a Monolith Liquid Spark headphone amp. It's not night a day different, but there is subtle but noticable difference. Mainly ( for me ) it has improved soundstage and imaging. ( went from an ok 3 to 5 blob locations ( depending on headphones ) to a almost perfect smooth transition from left to right and back again ) Bass impact is a little better and overall it is a cleaner sound all together. Nice little unit.

I concur fully with the Geshelli J2S being a reference DAC - it is my reference. I use the big Sparkos SS2590 dual mono module on the RCA socket (1 riser required); and I use a 12V 50W linear power supply.
I have compared this to the Ares II (OG) with the 12th Anniversary firmware update - and my J2S is significantly better, in all aspects. Even with the Sparkos and LPS, the J2S costs half as much.

Neil, do you have the 4493-S or 4499/4491 current-based chips? Your thoughts on the high output 2590 Op Amps and LPS pushing more heat through the board infrastructure and pre-mature failure of the DAC? New Dayzee is factory optioned with 2590 (x8) and I am curious if upgraded to handle more juice. Geno says newer power supply but no specs on any of this just yet. Dayzee is sexy @ $1500 base +++, but is too high for me and J2S fits my comfort zone better under $800 with goodies plus LPS cost.

I am wondering if an external DAC would take care of it. But also don't feel that the node should be this disappointing. thoughts?

I have a Yamaha A/V receiver with integrated Tidal app and am enjoying streaming music to this receiver. It's output is "only" CD quality FLAC 16 bit / 44.1, although the receiver is capable of outputting 24 bit / 192. I have the Tidal subscription that now includes high res audio. Does it make sense for me to get a DAC, play Tidal from my laptop or phone to get all of the 24 bit / 192 resolution. What is the chance I will notice a difference from my current setup? Interested in your thoughts and those of your viewers.

I still find DACs a bit mystifying. So I'm planning on dumping my sound bar and going to some CSS Torii's as my TV/living room sound. I was going to go optical out to my WIIM Pro and then to a Fosi V3 amp. It seems he's saying the DAC inside the WIIM is best bypassed for any of these options. I'm guessing you'd go optical in and out on the WIIM and then put a DAC between the streamer and the amp?

    • @cheapaudioman
      @cheapaudioman  Год назад +2

For Tv duty you’ll do just fine with the DAC in the WIIM. If you really want to get into more music then an external DAC would give you higher resolution for sure. Better instrument separation. But for movies and tv what you described will work great. Maybe hold off for tomorrows video too. There is a product that may be perfect for you

      You like tubes, I see.
If you tube roll and own a great pair of 12au7, you may want to look into an Xduoo TA22.

@@tubefreeeasy I went with a Gustard R26 Dac. I’ve bought $2500 in tubes for this amp on top of all of the great tubes I’ve collected for 35 years that relate to tube guitar amplifiers.

My amp is a Xduoo TA30.
I have Shuguang Black Treasures in those and a pair of 12au7 in my TA22. I may have purchased the last BT tubes in existence for purchase.
Also in my TA30, I have a Sophie Electric Aqua 274B rectifier tube. I figure, who do I get to compare my system with? If I think to myself, how can a DAC have a better sound than this?
      I mean, it’s $500.
For some reason, Xduoo is the only company anywhere that uses 12au7(s) plus utilizing a 274b/5u4g. Whoops, Woo Audio does as well but I’d rather pay less.
I’m in the process of re-cabling switching from silver-plated to silver-core.
I’ve created an anti-vibration platter for my tube amps/DAC. That’s a step many audiophiles ignore.
I wish us, our ultimate upgrade futures awaiting us.

@@tubefreeeasy I’ve got a pair of Psvane Acme 805’s, a pair of Gold Lion 300b’s, a pair of Psvane CV-181’s, a pair of Svetlana black plate 5u4g rectifiers, a GE red tip black plate 12ay7 pre tube, and a Sophia Electric 274b Aqua 2. I’ve got some Isoacoustic Orea pucks for my heavily modified upgraded Rega P2 but I didn’t even think about isolation for the tube amp and the Gustard R26 Dac. I will have to look into that but for now I’m trying to find a stand that will allow me to put that 100 pound heavy Wilsenton amp on it safely and maybe have racks in it for everything else. I have a Tascam rack CD player and a power conditioner. I think when you start getting into r2r designs, as compared to Delta Sigma dacs, I think you need to spend a lot more money so maybe for an r2r dac if you want a great one, maybe you’re looking at spending $2500 or so, I don’t know.. my take is that a good multibit design is a more expensive proposition than a good Delta Sigma design, and a good r2r design is a more expensive proposition than the others..

Since I started to follow your channel, I already bought the Topping e50, the Modi 3, The Modi Multibit and a Geshelli Labs. You are ruining my bank account : )
I love them all, and agree with every comment about them. I would place the Modi 3 a hair behind the others, and the Geshelli a hair in front of the group.
But I should suggest you to try out the Drop Grace Design SDAC. I Don't know it they are still available, but it fits very well in this category, just beside the Geshelli.
