  • It is October 1991 at the Cass Scenic Railroad and my Dad was on hand to capture these iconic scenes of Shays 2, 3, and 5 working the daily tourist trains up and down Cass Hill. The whistles are as follows: Shay 5 has a Louisville and Nashville short bell 3 chime freight whistle, Shay 2 has a Nathan 6 chime (modified in the Cass Shop), and Shay 3 has a 6 inch 3 chime Crosby. The engineers are Artie Barkley, Danny Seldomridge, and Red McMillion. Special thanks to my Dad for allowing me to upload these films to the internet. Please like and subscribe! You know, I never really did like the shrill, higher pitched sound of the L&N 3 chime freight whistle. But this one actually sounds pretty sweet, and Artie does a FANTASTIC job making her sing!

If you are referring to #2s, watch Pentrax’s take on this when the shot during Railfan weekend in a year before this. Personally, that whistle is THE BEST on a shay!

Something to ask your Dad: when this was recorded, was it done in a single day, or was it recorded over two different days? The reason I ask is, in 1991, Cass Scenic Railroad only operated between Cass and Whittaker Station because the line between Whittaker and Bald Knob was being upgraded to 100 pound rail (the Cass to Whittaker portion was completed during the winter off season between 1990 and 1991). So, it is my assumption that the double headers in this video only went to Whittaker, and returned to Cass and doubleheaded again. When I went as a kid a couple weeks before this video was made (I visited in September), they were running both the Whittaker and Bald Knob train sets every hour on the hour at 11, 12, 1, 2, and 3. BUT they did not do any double heading, just two 5 car trains. I'll assume they went ahead and doubleheaded in October because demand was greater during peak color. Also to note, these were the final runs with the Bald Knob cinder car, which received a rebuild with a new roof added during the 1991-92 off season.

You are correct. It was recorded in a single day and the trains were only going to Whittaker. I appreciate the information on the cinder car as I wasn't sure when the last time it was used!! I was only 1 year old when this was taken. BTW love the interview videos yall did with Artie!

@@drpeerless1 Ha! Much appreciated. We actually still have some "new" Artie footage, I'd say we have 3-4 more videos worth, at least. I need to finally get those done but was having trouble finding good illustrations for the subject matter. My first trip to Cass was in 1990, the year you were born I presume. :P

As Nicholas pointed out, the Shay No. 3 in these videos was actually leased by Cass Scenic Railroad, and operated from 1972-1992. It was returned to its home state of Oregon in 1994 after a dispute between the owner and the WV DNR (they were offered the option to buy the locomotive multiple times but constantly tabled the motion). As of the last time I heard about the locomotive, it is now in operational condition in Oregon, but is stored as the railroad that has it leased hasn't been running excursions since 2016. The "new" Shay No. 3 at Cass was purchased in 2002, and will likely never operate. It had a partial cosmetic restoration about a decade ago and was displayed next to the depot until about 2018, when it was moved to the Greenbrier dead siding.
