  • This video documents some of the operations occurring on the Cass Scenic Railroad on October 9, 1988 the day before "Railfan Day" on Monday October 10, 1988. Scenes include operations of excursion trains, watering and fueling locomotives, equipment moves in preparation for "Railfan Day", stored equipment along the former right-of-way, and scenes of the shop interior during a nighttime tour.

So much has changed over the years! Who would have guessed in 1988 that that climax would be operational about 30 years later?

Although not showing a "chase" up the mountain, this footage offers a lot of noteworthy sites--too many to mention, but I'll touch base on the ones that stand out to me. First off, the commotion at 1:06 seems apropo for the standard railfanning at Cass. There is always someone complaining about someone else being in their photo, no matter what day it is. Other more important things: a couple of great scenes with Shay No. 3 which is no longer at Cass, having returned to her home state of Oregon in 1994. The store behind the depot called Country Craft Junction remained into the early 1990s, while the petting zoo next to it (fenced in) was closed in 1991. The Toy Train Museum in the passenger car was gone by 1990, with the wording on the side of the car painted out with black paint, which remained until the car was scrapped in 2012. Employees still accessed the shop area by literally driving on the railroad tracks on an area of "high gravel" directly underneath the water tower's spout. Also, the concrete slab for the C&O's water spout is still in place here...it was removed when they moved the aforementioned shop access road to behind the water tower with a more standard grade crossing being installed. It appears obvious that the coal dock grade trackage had only recently been removed. Excellent shot of the remaining Mower camp car in the yard with two tone red paint (now on the company store siding rotting away), as well as the skidder in its "as delivered" state. The skidder is now at Whittaker displayed for viewing by guests. A great shot at 20:34 of Red McMillion fueling oil burner Shay No. 3. The yard maneuvers featuring Shay Nos. 4 and 2 beginning around 23:45 are most likely in preparation for a Carl Franz charter that would have taken place the following day (a Columbus Day tradition for years). You are right about BL2 #82...it still operates for D&GV on the Cheat Mountain Salamander/Tygart Flyer runs today, and returned to Cass briefly for repairs and repainting (changed to "fireball" scheme instead of speed lettering) in 2017. Many of the other cars that are shown surrounding the BL2 were sold off or scrapped out in 2012, including the Alco diesels, CN caboose (which had a tree growing in it), and the passenger cars that Shay No. 2 pushes into the scene at around 32:00. The wooden trestle the train is passing over at 33:51 decayed rapidly after this and was removed by the mid 1990s as it became a safety hazard. The former Mower log pond trestle on the other side of the steel bridge is today completely reduced to two rails dangling in mid air over Leatherbark Creek.
