Cass Scenic Railroad - A Climax On The Greenbrier Express

- On August 15th I decided to make a last minute trip up to Cass to chase the Greenbrier Express from Cass to Durbin. With much luck the Climax made its first appearance on the Greenbrier Express while I was there! This is the Climax's first official regular excursion and it was awesome to see it. With loud stack talk, the echoing of the whistle, along with the mountains, and river it provided for a wonderful day for all who got to see this historical run. After chasing the Climax we decided to head up to Gum Road Crossing and catch Shay 11 wearing a original Canadian 4 Chime whistle on its way back down to Cass as well as caught it coming into the station and going back to the shops. As always thanks for watching!!
Love how she barks! I have a trip to West Virginia on my list some time in the future!
@@Pyrotrainthing She does sound good! Hope you get the chance to go and visit our great state!
It's wonderful hear and see this old gal running my grandfather fired one back in 1904 on the White Deer and logenton in Pa.
Thanks keep up the great work.
It's good to see them finally pulling excursions with #9. I had wondered when and if they were going to.
Nice to see a Climax going to Durban once again. I hope number 3 gets repaired soon.
Cool to see the Climax doing the Greenbrier Express run. Great video
@@calebbarkley3097 Thank you!
Great video. Got to see the Climax run for the first time the other day. Very cool to see it doing the Greenbrier Express run
@@Barkley512 Thank you! Glad you got the chance to see it!
Great Production Man! 👍 The Climax is such a Cool engine! If only the Heisler was Running too! 😂 Keep Up the Great Work!
@jacksonsdrones Thanks man!
Awesome video!! Super cool to see the Climax hauling some passenger trains; hopefully will be something they continue to do occasionally
@@PANortheasternRailfan Thank you! It was awesome to witness it.
Magnificent catches of the steam locomotive coming by and pass, I like it 5 stars.
Thumbs up.
Hearing that amazing puffing and chufing sound and cars coming through is absolutely crazy.
Keep up the perfect work, my friend, i just liked and subscribed your channel, Greetings from Portugal to the USA.
Thank you! Greetings!
@@cassscenicproductions8888 no problem, mate.
@@cassscenicproductions8888 the trains in your country are amazing.
@@cassscenicproductions8888 one day, i will travel to the USA and film the trains.
Beautiful train ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ I never seen train special beautiful like this God bless you and protect you
I went to the Cass scenic railroad in 2004 and remember when they were overhauling this locomotive. The whistle that is on it in this video was the same whistle that was on the heisler locomotive that double headed the trip to Bald Knob with Shay #2 that i took. Western Maryland Shay #6 was doing the Whitaker station trips
Great catches awesome chase and nice video
@@lashendawest7509 Thank you!
What an awesome video, i love the 4 chime on shay 11 it sounds so awesome and I hope to ride behind climax 9 someday because how incredible it is.
@@ajlaneve1822 Thank you!
@@cassscenicproductions8888 you’re welcome
Is good to have a day here online riding with yall. Be about 48 years since I first started riding Cass long ago as a teen behind number two to I think Spruce. Your brakies taught me about downgrade braking the way back down. I applied some of that to trucking time later in the mountains.
Am in hospice now ~ a certain amount of time but until that day I visit here online and ride along. The whistle on 11 sounds wonderful.
I believe the Climax did well today too. But wonder about the running gear on that second pax car under there. Then again they have people to keep a eye on it.
Nice video! Surprised to see the Climax pulling the greenbrier express!
@@StrasburgRailProductions Thank you!

Nice looking Climax and caboose. Hopefully the coaches will receive some fresh paint and proper lettering soon.
Good luck. Don’t hold your standards high for that place under current management.
Also, please explain why the 835 even needs a repaint and relettering? It’s true and genuine as the only original Western Maryland steel coach in existence.
Wow that is so cool I just got back from Pocahontas County I can’t believe I missed it 😂
Nice video.

This will be a good one. I saw some pictures of it the day before when it went for a shakedown run they used to. The 80 ton to haul it back
This and EBT are two examples of a tourist railroad restoring track that they never used in the first place. EBT is restoring it's main line west/southwest of Rockhill/Orbisonia that was last used in March or April 1956 and a half mile was used for speeder rides a few years ago south of the main station in Rockhill Furnace. The ex-Reading coaches that were used with the 2-8-0 that was once part of Quakertown and Eastern were for sale at NCTM and apparently they were just sold. Cass should have looked at them to go with the #4/604.
I think the whistle that the climax is wearing is the same 3 chime that shay 3 wore during the 80s and early 90s.
You're not that far off since it does sound very similar.
@@RJCormanRailfan pretty sure it's the same one.
With my trip to Cass now in under a week, I was wondering if you could help me with something.
Do you know the return times for Bald Knob, both Whittaker trips, and the Greenbrier Express?
PS - Lovely video!
Very nice! Are they still looking into getting a boiler for 604? I see it out there on the dead line.
@@billyrueckert5113Yes they are!
Very nice video. I would love to do this and film it at roblox cass sometime! (also that climax video is fully edited, so it will be up soon!)
@@EasternMichiganProductions Thank you! We definitely need to recreate this. Can't wait to see the video!
YAAAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!
Is it just me, or is Climax #9 hauling the train at a significantly faster speed than #4 and the other Shays? I don't know if I've ever seen the Greenbrier Express move like that.
@hawkeyeten2450 I was thinking the same thing at some points in the video the Climax was moving faster then the usual Shay speed on the Greenbrier.
Lookin' like that smoke box could use some graphite and linseed oil.
Does anyone know what kind of whistle that 11 is wearing?
@@maxm4375 CN 4 Chime
That bell sounds like Strasburg 90’s bell!
So it’s my understanding the other operation that had a climax years ago and a gas electric trolley (some diseaseals also) operates Cass. Is that correct? They used to have a Durbin train and a something creek salamander. Which from the looks of it was a really cool scenic line. Do they ever run those trains or is it primarily just Cass now?
Also wasn’t somebody maybe even these guys relaying a section of the old C&O line that was peeled that ran Ronceverte to Durbin back when I was a kid and even 2102 ran on it in 1971 as I recall.
Lastly is this a Cass Climax or the Climax that the Durbin Route chaps had.
@steamgent4592 Your understanding is correct. The old durbin train was the durbin rocket, which covered a couple miles of track along the Greenbrier. The Greenbrier Express follows the same route but with much more trackage all the way from Cass to Durbin. I'm not too sure on the creek salamander. I think something got washed out, and it's been washed out for many years. They don't run both of those trains anymore as the Greenbrier Express took over the Durbin Rocket. The climax in this video is Cass climax 9, which was restored in 2019. The other one is Climax 3, which ran the durbin rocket for many years.
It’s great to see the Climax pulling a revenue train! Nice video Walter! So the engine is doing better on water consumption? Did they install a water tank or are you pulling out of the creek?
Hello! My name is not Walter lol. But the engine must be doing better on water consumption. They do fill up with water at Hosterman on the way to Durbin and I'm not sure if they fill up on the way back too.
@@cassscenicproductions8888 my bad! Thanks for the information
@@shayfan05 No problem!
@@cassscenicproductions8888So they get the water out of the creek there?
@@RJCormanRailfan That's correct
Seems a bit balky in the low speeds.
Can I use a bit of this footage for a video if I credit you?
How much of the footage do you plan to use?
@@cassscenicproductions8888 Somewhere between 4 - 20 seconds of the engine passing by.
@@SodorFan15 Yeah that's fine
