Wow this brings back some memories of a 10 year old little girl back in the mid 1960s with a beautiful steam train sitting basically in our front yard . I was getting curious as to why the regular freight trains I always watched daily weren't running that day . I soon found out why with my first sighting of a steam locomotive up close and personal .I heard it a great distance away and my grandfather who worked as a brakeman had kept it's retirement run secret from me .I did get to tour it and have a short cab ride in it across the state line to where it was on display .I am happy to say that same train and I are still going all these years later .So much for it's retirement .It was far too beautiful to just be abandoned .It was completely restored and I visit it every few years in Tennessee .Silly me thinking those diesels were impressive to my young heart and mind that was before I met steam trains .World of difference in the two .I am going to see this legend soon also .It is my absolute favorite train of all time .We might have been dirt poor but I was queen for a day riding in that old steam locomotive .Sometimes the best gifts in life are free, completely unexpected and a train is involved .May Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 roll on forever to brings us all joy and awe of it's legendary status ,beauty and power .

The best gifts in life are *never* free!!!!
They are so precious that they can- usually- only be PRICELESS!!!!
Think about it- the engineering/lives/science/dedication/resources/materials/craftsmanship/persistence it took for humanity to reach, perhaps, the produce the pinnacle of steam locomotives, coupled with the humanity and generosity of the folks that took time out for you (and, maybe others, over _their_ years).... this was priceless, and that is why you'll never forget!!!!

Got to see it at Rochelle, Il. Absolutely amazing. Over 50,000 people came to see it. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me. I'm not quite as old as the Big Boy but not far behind. My daughter and I drove 1 1/2 hours and there were so many cars waiting we didn't think we'd get to see it but we found a backroad and were able to get in and walk up to it and look inside one of the cars and talk with some of the crew. They blew the whistle every so often too. Yes, girls love trains too but steam trains are the best.

Took my 6 year old who is obsessed with trains (and the big boy specifically) to Rochelle to see it this past weekend. We saw it at the UP hub and then monday set up about 5 miles outside Rochelle to watch it steam by. It was a really cool experience and the kid LOVED it! 950 mile trip, but well worth it. Amazing piece of machinery.

@@voidjavelin23 Not necessarily true. In the past, some so-called "freight" diesel electric engines had steam generators added so they could be used for passenger service. And they have otherwise been used for passenger service such as the Southern Pacific using Fairbanks Morse Trainmasters to pull commuter trains. In the Amtrak era, for a long time it was common for the Coast Starlight to be headed by a GE P42 ("passenger style body) followed by a GE Dash 8-32B configured to provide HEP power for the passenger train. Sometimes you will see a UP SD70 on the front of the Coast Starlight. It is really how the engine is configured and how it is used that determines if it is passenger or freight. Although it is true that for the most part, cowl bodies tend to be used for passenger. But that is not definitive.

@Anitasemp I mean, they hurried the Big Boy through Chicago because they don't own the portion BB traveled from Bellwood to Dolton. An East Coast excursion likely won't happen, but I wouldn't totally rule it out.

I did not make it, either. 2019 seems a long time ago now, but it took a few years for me to be able to get to see it in person, and I live in the railroad's home city. It was back through my city, 5 miles away, and I did not go.

I live in the Netherlands and next year we will go on vacation to America, visiting my brother. I hope I can see this machine somewhere in real life then. In the Netherlands we can only enjoy this kind of machine via the Internet.
Can you find on the Internet where and when this giant can be admired somewhere?
