Southern Railroad steam train excursion with ex Texas and Pacific #610

On Saturday August 22, 1977 I rode a steam excursion train pulled by Southern Railroad ex Texas and Pacific #610. On this excursion #610 never exceeded 30 MPH because the week before it had a bad pony truck. The new truck was being tried out on this trip so the speed restriction resulted. The train stopped frequently to check the new truck. This video contains numerous photos of the excursion t...

Neat vignettes from an important, but rarely photographed yard. There are a few Faively pantographs lurking in the pictures of the SD45's. These would be from E-33's or E-44's.

Wonder what the current status of the road is and if this trip was repeated. It would be great if someday they figured a way to reincorporate these tracks into revenue producers and help pave the way for future improvements. I really believe that in the future these kinds of tracks will end up back in commuter service to help clear off the overcrowded highways and give us a cleaner and cheaper alternative. I think it can be done, but you're going to need forward thinkers who want to make it work.

I just ran across your video, but thank you for catching SOU 2613w. I worked on her as a conductor for the Carolina Southern in the early 2000's. Quite possibly one of the best pulling locomotives we had back then. She suffered a minor fire in her electrical cabinet in 2012 while pulling a unit rock train to Myrtle Beach. Unfortunately, this would seal her fate. By 2014 she was scrapped. Amazingly, after her short career with the Waccamaw Coast Line, and her 17 year career with Carolina Southern, she never lost her tuxedo livery.

1361's bell sounds much better in this video than the other 1361 vids I've seen. When the locomotive was initially restored its bell was so worn that it didn't even sound like a PRR bell. It actually took me a while to realize that it was an authentic PRR bell. The crew must've given it a thorough cleanup by the time this excursion happened.

It's such a shame to be left in such a deprecated state, I mean it's in perfect condition by the looks of the video, That's the same a piece of hero wrote history is being left to rest away.

Attention everyone! Ignore all negative comments towards 1361. Here’s what been happening. From a Trains Magazine article on July 7th, 2023 “Work to construct a new $425,000 firebox for Pennsylvania Railroad Class K4s steam locomotive No. 1361 (PRR Juniata Shops, 1918) is moving along rapidly, with the inner wrapper sheets scheduled to be assembled late next month or in early September.” “The museum raised the money needed to fabricate a new firebox, the rear part of the boiler that uses heat energy to convert water into steam to power the cylinder-propelled driving wheels. The money came from large and small donors, a $100,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical & Historical Society, and benefit steam excursions on the nearby Everett Railroad and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in Cumberland, Md. For those events, the three-chime PRR Blue Ribbon passenger whistle from No. 1361 was fitted to the steam engines on each of those roads.” “The outer firebox wrapper sheets are formed and drilled for rivets and staybolts, and the fireman’s-side piece is temporarily fastened to the boiler barrel with bolts. The engineer’s-side outer sheet was fitted and then removed to facilitate the installation of the six inner-sheet parts.” “The new crown and side sheets are being fabricated at Greiner Industries in Mount Joy, Pa., according to Zach Hall, FMW general foreman, and will be delivered to Altoona in a few weeks. The new door sheet and original inner throat sheet are at FMW’s shop for patchwork and will be delivered in late August or early September.” “The design, fabrication, and assembly of the new firebox is “the largest single aspect of the budget,” according to Joe DeFrancesco, the museum’s executive director. When the pieces are put together in the museum’s roundhouse late next month or early September, he said, visitors will be able to intermittently watch the progress from a safe viewing area.” “The exception will be when a group of about a half-dozen workers, both FMW staff and volunteers, are driving the hundreds of rivets and staybolts, hammering pieces, or using impact wrenches. All are ear-splitting procedures requiring robust hearing protection, so the shop will be closed during those sessions.” “As the firebox reaches completion, DeFrancesco said, the museum will start its campaign to raise several hundred thousand dollars for the next phase - developing a budget and work scope for mating the boiler and firebox to the frame and running gear. This, he said, will include installation of the six drivers and the leading and trailing trucks. He repeated earlier advice offered by board Chairman Wick Moorman that the best way to support the project is to buy a museum membership.” Please make your donations to PRR 1361 today! This locomotive will draw folks from around the world. It will also be a valuable educational tool, a tourist attraction, and an economic driver for Altoona and Blair County, Pennsylvania. Invites/agreements are in the works with the Colebrookdale Railroad, Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, Everett Railroad, and more for 1361 to visit to for special events!

Unfortunately, she will never see the rails again ... She is in pieces , frame and trailing truck is in red primer , no work being done at all , never have fixed the cross head bearing that was misdrilled , axle bearing , bend frame , cross equalizing mount hanger .. Now , she would need her 15 year boiler update , which requires it to be completely stripped down , boiler course inspected , new flues and tubes , tube sheets , stay bolts inspected and the bad ones replaced... If she is ever put back together , she'll be a static display only ,,,, SAME DEMIZE AS U.P. 3985 YES ,, LOOK UP THE HORRIBLE WORK DONE ON BOTH OF THESE ENGINES .... BAD WELDING , ECT ... HORRIBLE WORK TO GET THEM UP AND RUNNING BACK IN THE DAY FOR EXCURSION PORPOSSES , and you have to remember that these engines were brought back into service back in the early 1980's , by people that were to "" GUNG HO """ to get them moving rather than the workmanship to do it RIGHT ...... THATS WHY 4014 TOOK 5-6 YEARS AFTER IT WAS STRIPPED DOWN ..... About 25% of the BIG BOY IS NEW MATERIAL , bearings , every airline , secondary steam lines , oil lubrication lines , all fittings are all ,,,,, HANDMADE AND BRAND NEW .... That's why U.P. did 4014 and not put in any effort for 3985 ,, she was to far gone ... And so is 1361

You’re wrong. Ever since Wick Moorman, Bennett Levin, and several other became board members since 2018 and with the new restoration campaign launched in 2021, progress has been progressing ever since. The 1361’s will have its new firebox completed very soon with new sheets and boiler rivets. Thats not all. The next work will go towards valves, steam chest, and running gear. Also, driving wheels will be quartered for smooth running of the rods. This project will get done. I have donated hundreds of dollars to this restoration and I’ll continue to donate until 1361 is back under steam again. You will NOT stop this restoration from being completed. Please delete your comment.

WOW , THEY GOT $100,000 BUT STILL NEED ANOTHER $2.5 MILLION AND THATS AN UNDER ESTIMATION AS OF RIGHT NOW IN 2023 ..... NOT TO MENTION 10 TO 15 YEARS FROM NOW (( MAYBE 2035 .... )) The 4014 coast 3 times as much as its estimation , as with most others restoration ... So to get 1361 up and running , estimate $2.5 million times 3

@@robertswickard8355 No, they raised over $400,000 to cover the firebox cost. Regardless, many people and I are donating to 1361 every week. It will operate again. If you’re not out trackside with your phone camera ready when 1361 rolls out, I’m going to be amazed. Even Everett Railroad, Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, Colebrookdale Railroad, and other railroads have agreements and invites for 1361 to operate on their railroad. This restoration will be 100% worth it.
