I actually like this Sony lens a lot. Reason why I gotten it back in 2016 was because it was the best 24-70 mm lens for Sony at that time before Tamron and Sigma started making dedicated mirrorless lenses. And im still using it today. Its light weight, versatile, has OSS, and great build quality. Would definitely rate it a 4/5 stars. Yes, not having the f/2.8 is huge as that can help gather more light in low light shots. But for sure I do love the OSS as that helps me a lot with video recording. Combine the OSS with Sony's IBIS and a gimbal, the shakey movements are almost non-existent. The other reason why i got the lens is because of the fast auto focus that tamron can't keep up with especially for videos. With run-n-fun situations, i do need fast auto focus and this lens never fails to impress me on its fast auto focus. For $800 U.S. dollar, it is the most affordable 24-70 mm zoom lens right now. Tamron is 28-70 is at $900 u.s. dollars while Sigma is at $1,100 u.s. dollars. I do own the sigma DN art zoom lens too and i prefer that one for photos for sure. overall, Sony 24-70 mm zoom is still worth picking up today for $800 or less.
Hey man, I'm having a hard time deciding with this lens. I got the A7c, so I'm looking to keep my lens size down as well. I understand that we need to have bigger lenses to go f2.8 zoom. I'm fine with the f4 sacrifice. But the problem is I see videos on YT that demonstrate how this lens is soft, has unacceptable distortions (opposite curvature at wide and telephoto)... and I really don't wanna pay several hundred for something like that. By size, this wins automatically, but nothing else. I have gotten spoiled on incredibly sharp, small lenses, since I used to be on Panasonic Lumix. I never had to worry about distortion or sharpness on those. I guess I have to be more careful when shopping full frame. Do you have any recommendation for this lens or similar? Size in mind, as well as the autofocus (I am also a video person like you); keeping me from going tamron.
I bought this lens a couple a months ago brand new from Sony. I paid 498 dollars! You can't go wrong at that price. I use it on my 7RII and it performs surprisingly well at anything from 30 to 60mm. If you take into account that this lens can replace the Zeiss 35 f2.8 (by using the OSS) it's a bargain! It's not particularly sharp in the corners at 24 and kind of soft at 70, but as I know its weaknesses I make sure I use it between those ranges and get excellent results!
I use the same camera and lens! I’ve always noticed that the image quality wasn’t up to par for some reason. What lens has superb quality with a good range of focal distance?
Thanks, Stefan! A fair review, even for 2024. I think it is very import to consider this lens and its companion 16-35 f4 ZA OSS were designed for the original A7 and A7r which did not have ibis. I purchased mine for that original A7 and I still use it to this day, along with the 16-35mm ZA for landscape photography. It pairs nicely with the A7 which is smaller and lighter than my A7III and A7rIIIa and I like that. The 24mp sensor is still very good IMO. If the corners are softer than other competing lenses, I've never noticed, but I'm usually shooting at landscape apertures f8, f11 etc. I'm sure the new Tamron 28-75 is a better lens, but I would miss the 24mm on the wide end. I travel with the Tamron 28-200mm and my A7rIIIa and am always missing the 24mm . (considering the Tamron 20-40 as a travel companion) So I really don't think there is a lens that we can fairly compare with this 24-70mm f4 ZA. The competing lens are larger, heavier and pricier and have no Ibis -- even the new 20-70mm f4G (which I suppose would be the best replacement, but not for the original A7) is a couple hundred dollars more. And as some mentioned, the other lenses you mention are all more expensive and mostly bigger and heavier. Then there is rendering which might make a difference to some users. I have always liked Zeiss rendering myself. So this lens, especially on sale or a good used copy might be a good choice for some. Oh, and I always prefer lenses with the 67mm filter thread which this lens has -- as well as most Tamron lenses. I don't shoot video, so I have no idea how this one compares with other lenses for video.
I’ve seen a few bad reviews of this lens, none of which I concur with. I have a 2020 copy and maybe Sony improved their q.c., but I find it just as good as the 24-105 over the same focal length range. I wish it were a ‘G’, but it isn’t and apart from that it’s fine. I think you only find sharpness issues if you pixel peep, and even then they are not serious.
I have this lens and i really like it. It's really sharp and makes you happy. F4 also enough for portrait photos. I give 5 star :) Zeiss is the best....
Man I just bought this lens today on Ebay ..... Brand New in the Box $500.00 shipped ...... Can't wait ....It's replacing my 28-70mm that came with my kit on my Sony a7iii
Idk. Did not find a lens as versitile as this one for cheaper or +- the same. Im thinking hard to get this one, but it might be the move. Could pick it up for 500.- while the tamron goes for 700 or more
Bhphoto: "Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures."
This must be why there's a bunch off on it where I'm getting it but because of that it makes it price competitive enough for me to get it. I like seeing a more critical review, this looks like it'll do nicely for my price range (otherwise I was recommended that Tamron)
What options would be there in terms of size and price besides the Tamron, I don’t see any. I own a Sony 24-105 G Lens, which is great in quality. Tu heavy as hell and very large, so I think twice before taking it...
Hi there my FE 24-70mm Lens Cap got broken so I ordered a 55mm sony lens cap. Is it the right mm size for this lens? I'm worried I ordered wrong coz I saw from this video that the size is 67mm. 😑
Hi Stefan! I would like to know if there is much difference in image quality between this sigma 28-70 and the zeiss 24-70 f4?... in my country the zeiss costs half the price of the sigma... is the zeiss worth it in 2022 ? i have an a7c. Thanks and regards
Thank you for your film. It is very helpful for me to know about the lens. May I ask you a question? 5:17 there is oranges and strawberries. Did you do color grade? Did you use picture profile ? if you did, would you let me know what setting you used? Because I am film how to cook at home and it is very difficult to show the original color of food on my videos.
@@StefanMalloch Thanks for confirming my take on it too. Just purchased one to replace my 24-70 f4. Was able to pick one up as a demo for $740. Was a no brainer at that price. Demo or not. I was waiting on your message but I couldn't pass that up. It's actually replacing my 16-35 and a macro that I hardly use.
The price must have gone down in USA. I Norway it cost almost as much as the 24-105. I like the sice of it. The Tamron is not much heavier but it is much longer. And 24 instead of 28 means more than 75 instead of 70.
Exactly , many people only see the bad corner sharpness of this lens, but they intentionally ignored the seize and weight and most importantly the 24mm instead of 28mm. I got Tamron 28-75 but immediately return it and turn to this 24-70 f4. Tamron hunts ridiculously much in low light, never trust Tamron again
Yes I know it’s not a prime I’m saying there’s nothing in that focal range for Sony FE Mount for less then $800 unless you go Rokinon Samyang prime correct me if I’m wrong... I would really like some good/descent glass for under a $1000 with autofocus for street photography nighttime cityscape landscape etc. So what’s better then this for under a $1000.. Thanks for the quick response 👍🏻
Hypnotik Photography I’ve heard it’s nice but I really like the extra 4mm wider from the Sony I guess I probably should just get the 24-105 but then for that money maybe get a 16-35 f4 lol Sony is expensive but then again so are all the other brands when you get into higher end glass I wish 3rd party would get on the FE Mount already still waiting for Tamron Sigma 150-600 fe Mount
How do you like the 24-105 not real thrilled about f4 on any of these that’s why I was asking about a wide angle prime seems they don’t exist for under $1300 or more with af
Not true. I own both lenses. The kit lense is definitly less sharp and the contrast much worse. The kit lense shows as if there would be some fig in the air. You see this very clearly when you shoot the same pic with the two lenses...
Just got this. I can't say that the kit lens is better but I really can't justify paying this much more for not much more. If money's an issue, the F4 ain't worth the often difficult to see improvement. Color saturation is a bit better. I have not compared the two at night.
Not even close. Kit lens lacks behind this zeiss lens for sure. and kit lens doesn't even has OSS for crying out loud. I wouldn't spend $300 on a sony kit lens but for sure the kit lens is great at video recording

Agreed! This is a beast of a lens and definitely the best bang for your buck for a 24-70/28-75 focal range for song!

2 years later, the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 is very light and small for full frame. It's about the size of the Zeiss 24-70mm f/4.
Very honest review. I almost buy this lense, since it is Zeiss. Thank you Stefan ........... give you 2 thumbs ...... hehehe

I have the Sony a7rii what lens do y’all recommend for super sharp, crisp image quality with the same focal length around 24-70?
Pretty much any 24-70 or 28-75 available except this one..

Yes!
your video says 2020, but was recorded in 2019. ????

Great video.

Yes. You can put any sony full frame lens on their crop camera. It wouldn't be 24 to 70 tho. It'll be more like 36-105.
