- As part of Guitar Center's Master Class artist program, 10 winners around the country were hand-chosen by Synyster Gates for a private master class at Guitar Center, Hollywood. Check out this rare Gypsy Jazz performance from Synyster of Avenged Sevenfold.
It baffles me that anyone can say the Gates sucks. Only on the internet. Never heard a person in real life say that he sucks. One of the best of our time. Just cause he is young and plays for a band you don't like, don't mean much.
Nikita Prosin so true, people will say so much crap over the internet.
Nikita Prosin I personally can't stomach a7x. but it goes without saying that he has masterful hands and is an outstanding musician. it's really great to hear how well rounded he can be. a good musician is a good musician regardless of the bands music. his talent is real
Jeffrey, yes, yes they do! so dumb and immature!
And Brett, thank you for saying that. See I don't mind at all if A7X is not your style, but as you stated, Syn Gates is a such well rounded musician that he can incorporate one of many many styles he studies on his own time into Avenged music. He is just that good. Credit is given where credit is due. Hats off to you S. Gates!
Nikita Prosin this is the comment feed that american musicians need to delve in.
its just a american things. they heard a metallica songs, but only a master of puppets/enter sandman, iron maiden trooper and etc. american crowds its just sucks. if you a (musician) you'll appreciate what his or anybody improvised. american people cant even improvised a song. i mean not all of them, but most of them. my point is, they just follow the trend. thats it.
if you go to european tour, they will sing a long, not just a7x, they will sing all of their fav band.
american sucks.
The reality is that someone using the comments to criticise a guitarist hasn't the skill level to match the guitarist they are criticising. A great guitar player would never criticise a player beneath their level. Firstly, because they have nothing to prove. Secondly because they have been where the lower skilled player is at some point in the past, and understand the hard work and dedication we all go through when trying to improve our skills.
Therefore every person saying 'x player sucks' or any variation of this, is revealing they are not good enough to do the very thing they are citicising.
Since RUclips's creation some 11 or 12 years ago - I would wager there hasn't been a single 'comment hater' that has gone on to produce their own videos demonstrating a higher level of guitar playing than the person they have criticised.
Exactly, man! I'm glad there's someone here to make the same comment in my mind...But to me, these motherfuckers, the negative commenters and haters are just freaking stereotypes, prejudice or whatever they are...Like what's been said..."haters are gonna hate" ! These people will never ever understand, because they're not interested on understanding, they have the freaking CLOSED MINDS, that's all !
Could be said for all musicians except for Mozart.
never listen any video brian is a bad guitarist.
People should stop with this argument "If you are not better than him you have no right to criticize him"
Do you think people who criticize Trump know how to run a whole country ? I don't think so.
We don't compare the music, we enjoy the music. What I say is that there's no hierarchy.
BassistHK the people who criticize trump probably know more about how to run the country than he does...
I notice that Musicians with humble beginings always stay true in their music and demeanor.._.
My all time favourite guitarist
I love his voice
Genious and his techniques are ridiculous.
That little run at 2:13 is very similar to a part of httk solo
he kinda looks like christian bale
does anybody know what guitar he's using?
Synyster can play gypsy jazz as well if not better than a lot of gypsy jazz guitarists.
You haven't listened to much manouche guitar i take it? He's not bad but from what i've seen he'd have a long way to go before he could compete with the greats on an artistic or technical level.
morbideddie Mostly Grappelli with Django, I enjoy some of what Stochelo Rosenberg or Tchavalo Schmidt plays.
Stochelo does some really good stuff. I'm currently on a Dorado Schmitt marathon, such skill with a violin and his guitar work is impeccable.
On topic though I don't think syn is on par with any of the names just mentioned. He's ok but i doubt he could make a career in jazz.
somebody knows how i can improvise in gypzy jazz style.. or where i can found the scales
Lenin Perez K minor pentatonic scales (in this case the backing track is Django Rienhart's minor swing in Am) so A minor pentatonic with the addition of a flatted 5th so just add a D# into the scale
om telolet om
This is awesome!
Not quite Ola awesome though.
He's an amazing player! Gotta love some A7X!
Dude Ola A7X doesn't even compare to feared!
Also it make me happy you like Gypsy Jazz
Gates is one bad ass guitar player. Stop smoking crack!
wickedout2010 i dont like avenged sevenfold but i do agree gates is one hell of a guitarist but really if you think hes better than Ola you must be the one smoking crack
People shit on him all day and he goes home and plays this without sharing it. This is now he spites them and us.
+Hank Hill Exactly! I just watched this and was so thrown back. It's beyond amusing.
wtf hank hill every video I go to you're there. Love you though, say hi to peggers and bobby whos probably banging connie
Hank Hill I once saw an episode of Bobby head banging to hard rock music and you didn't seem very approving. So how the hell do you know who Synyster Gates is?
@King Greed then gypsy jazz ain't for you mate
@King Greedfuck you man
For anyone wanting to learn the guitar or any other instrument (or anything for that matter), the take home point of this video is at 0:40. "I used to love listening to it, but it just seemed like a very unattainable artform". Anyone practicing anything will at some point feel this, like it's impossible or unattainable, and it can be very difficult to overcome this feeling. When this happens to you, just remember that there is nothing to it except time and practice, lots of practice. If you do practice, you can't help but learn, the difficult part is actually taking time to do it.
So, when you see ppl like this, don't think of them as master musicians, think of them as master practicers. Now go play :)
Holy shit that was a good comment.
Very well said!!!
Music is endless so u can never truly master the craft.
@@logancrawford0319 Too true, and that's the funnest thing about it.
So true. I used to love the sound of guitar, but when i actually learn and play, it feels like i living a dream
I dare you to tell me this guy is a shit guitarist now, I fucking double dare you.
That was poor, not proper gypsy jazz at all. He's not shit, technically he's ok but as an overall guitarist he's pretty lacking
Klei Aliaj
and who are you?
cause you better be Eric fucking Clapton, if you wanna talk like that about guitarists like him... and I don't see master guitar players talk about about other guitarists like that, so take your self-proclaimed professional ass elsewhere
I'm not insulting him, technically he's good. But his ear for melody is rather appaling.
Klei Aliaj Perhaps it's you who are deaf. A-hole.
***** I never said anyone was deaf, if I offended your shit taste in music I apologise. Avenged sevenfold areas bad as slipknot or black veil brides, I don't even know what to call it but neo-rock seems to fit. And that performance of gypsy jazz, ask any experienced guitarist, was a pile of dissonant shite
He should release a whole album of this material. I'd buy it.
That is so true
Tsoni Ayala gesus on the scooter!
Herman Melville I'd download it from torrent.
He is playing over a song called Minor Swing by Django Reinhardt
mambo kings
The things that impress me most about Syn Gates is he still practices, learns new things and incorporates them into his playing. Most(Not all) musicians at Gates' level of fame just maintain their playing and stop growing musically.
Gates continues to get better as a musician and the new music he writes will reflect that. One more reason to love A7X.
A LOT of musicians, famous ones too, evolve their music playing as well, not just Syn Gates. It's just that they don't do promos for Guitar Centre showcasing this. Props to Gates, but I can name a dozen musicians who evolve just as well as Gates, most even better. Let's not overrate guitarsts, shall we?
Reynold Adamson I wasn't overrating him, or crowning him guitar god of all time. It's just a positive comment.
tried Tommy Emmanuel? ;)
MyworstEnemy only their new album sucked, their next album will be MUCH better, but if you listen to syns solos in this album holy crap, everyone is still talking about afterlife but man planets and heretic solos just wipe the floor with afterlife...
chazzy licks People don't understand that A7X is still breaking free of their influences. They will continue to grow as musicians and a band. These guys are a blue print for success, but also for creativity. They are positive and supporting of each other, and that is rare in any band. They are due for an Epic album imo. Great comment btw.
Imagine being in GC thinking "ugh this dude might be an old musician" and walking in and it's synyster gates
*plays like a God*
Syn: "But anyway.."
@OXYMORON I'm guessing you're the type of person that thinks lil Wayne is a great guitar player......
@@mrss9205 oof... Burn.. lol
Comments like this make me want to puke.
Jesus you guys are dicks for no reason
@OXYMORON You really showed why your name has moron in it
10 finalists out of thousands won the chance to attend a Master Class with Synyster Gates of Avenged Sevenfold held in the vintage room of our Hollywood store. *****
That shit ain't dark. This video does make me appreciate what he's able to do though. I guess sobering up a bit did him a lot of good.
Honestly, in my opinion, I think Synyster Gates is a guitar god.
Alex Virues I wonder about writing "in my opinion" or imo? Most of our comments/replies are our opinions?
It seems kind of redundant, but I agree stating it clearly saves you from criticism and unwanted debate.
Anyway, Syn Gates is the best guitar player of all time!!!
imo. : D (joking) and great comment btw Alex. I do not understand how there could possibly be a "Greatest" or "Best " Guitar Player? I play guitar to be better than I was yesterday, not better than my friends or anyone else.
upload the full solo with the schecter pls it would do a lot of guys good :D
what makes it rare?
I love these videos. Really shows a side of his playing that doesn't always translate with the things he does in Avenged. Sure, the jazz influence was always there, but it's cool to see him totally geek out on an acoustic!
the funny thing is that he is always geeking out on it, even on electric!Just take a look at the solo of Hail to the king! There is that lick(in the official video, its from 3:35 to 3:39)!That is basically gypsy jazz!
William Dow I am well aware that he has been doing gypsy jazz for years now... hence, "Sure the jazz influence was always there." It's just nice to see it in it's regular acoustic form, as opposed to being played on an electric guitar over (for the most part) metal. I've been waiting for another album like "City of Evil" ever since "City of Evil." hah. Without a doubt their most intricate work, on all fronts.
William Dow He's just happy to see some straight up jazz instead of fusing metal and jazz. Is it that hard to understand? wow...
Tom Whaley Yeah that and waking the fallen were my favorites from them. While i do like songs from all their albums, i think their talent was showcased more earlier.
Joe Laton Absolutely. "Waking the Fallen" and "City of Evil" are the two most solid records, by far.
Now I want to play gypsy jazz
Boom Boom
Yeah... Same here buddy..
Tommy Francisco Ayala SAMEEE
It's a massive tradition in where I'm from in Portugal I've been playing it since I've been a small boy
Me too I just started listening to this kind of music
0:49 So, what his skincare routine?
And Avenged Sevenfold and Synyster haters says he can only show off and play metal... haha
Jonathan Ernst that's all he did was show off?
He isn't playing an original song though. Anyone can cover a song. The guy himself said it's unattainable for him.
He's only playing the melody and he's play with a pick so...
Hatters is stupid, they suck cock each others. They very love it to do that.
@@holstorrsceadus1990 and...your point is?
He should release a skincare line. His face is glowing so majestically, I didn't pay attention to him playing guitar. I want the glow too, Syn. We all want that glow. Please.
Drink water... Lol
I'm not a big fan of Avenged, but wow, I have to respect who can play manouche jazz
Hah
behind any successful project, and avenged is just a project, there are usually very skilled musicians from all walks of life. always important to remember that.
Can just give the man a compliment and walk away, don’t have to bring up the fact you don’t like his band like what lmfao?
I’m convinced at this point that you A7x haters just love attention
how does he get that perfect shave?
Probably cant grow a beard at all
Ulises Valenzuela Im his barber, he has a smooth baby face so he really can't grow any facial hair
First with the grain, then against the grain.
Most likely a straight edge razor. My face is silky smooth after a straight edge shave xD
A very sharp guitar pick.
Prime example of why he is one of the most influential players out there today!
really?
nicky bareau yeah he is. his style is almost complerely unique. I mean quick licks did a synyster style solo. He's influenced many newer guitarists out there.
There are suprerior players. But I really like his style
While I am not a fan of Avenged Sevenfold, you gotta admit the dudes in the band are pure musicians.
They are. Amazing songwriters and composers too, especially The Rev.
They are such kind down to earth guys, its amazing.
Am i the only one who thinks that Syn looks like that russian dude in Ant man?
Lmao. now that you've mentioned it. I see it. 😂
+Edeline Kasen Villanueva Finally, somebody who sees it.
That is legit the first thing I thought when I watched ant man back in 2015 lmao
If you listen to A7X you will hear a lot of Gypsy Jazz influence in his music. It's really cool to see him incorporating such a different style into his own writing.
Are you sure its a lot?
@@Haewonmak24 Yes, almost all of his solos have gypsy jazz flavors thrown in.
I always wondered what made their lead guitars so much more melodic compared to other metal bands. But ever since I learned that he’s greatly inspired by gypsy jazz it all makes sense. Gypse jazz is a very smooth and melodic genre of jazz.
I had respect for Syn, but after hearing this I am truly speechless. Astonishing. Never knew he was into Django and gipsy jazz! Props!
I love reading all these comments of people agreeing with the opinion that Syn is shaping up to be one of the greats of his time. It's funny seeing people that were skeptics finally realizing that he is actually a really skilled musician. On top of being skilled he is so unique, and that's what I value most in a guitarist's style, including my own.
TheSamuraiApocalypse nah like there's plenty of guitarists that can do the same things as him, let's be honest.
you seem to be missing the point. there are thousands of People who can cover John petrucci, but does that make them as good as him? in my opinion, no. same With steve vai and satch or any of the greats really. the point is that there is not a lot of People who can Write like they can, and that musical individuality and compositional skill is what seperates a good player from a great one.
He's not as good as Mario from Chon or Tim Henson from Polyphia
@@medusa6491 tim henson is not better than syn lmao
@@Batman-qd1sr Tim Henson is overrated af
gypsy jazz and metal hmmm... awesome guy
Amir shah it was Toni Iomis favorite
Its not metal dude. Progressive rock.
Hi
@@HaziqNiel The stage would be progressive rock, self titled along with HTTK and Nightmare would be metal
@@HaziqNiel tell me the wtf album is progressive rock
Great to see a young metal guitar hero paying tribute to his roots and a legend like Django. And I love how he says "la pompe" with US accent :)
He is a total master on the guitar. No one can argue with that. One of the best in modern time.
Maxioff a total master is John Petrucci. Not this guy.
Brad CalwellProd He said of modern time. Petrucci is good also but not in the era he was referring to.
PaRe Slinky um wtf? You realize Dream Theater is still alive right?
Brad CalwellProd yea but he said modern time they were out in the 80's bro hes 50 rn
PaRe Slinky dude they have a new fucking album. 😂 they're still modern. Just because they FORMED in 1985 doesn't mean they were just popular in the 1900's 😂
2:13 that's one really cool part
Back in the 50s jazzy mood..
Synyster is one of the monsters out there, he plays with feeling. :)
50s?
more like 20s or 30s
He's one of everyone's favorite down-to-earth guitarist. Way to go!
Not everyone. But most of people
I hate A7X, but Synyster Gates is a fucking good guitar player.
why u hate
they are amazing band
so talanted!!!
off course you can hate a7x, but no one can pretend that Gates is a bad player, he is a good at this
Why
Why
The band is so talanted
I LOVE all their songs
well good for you, but that's not the case off everyone oO
even when I was into them I didnt think he was that great but wow.
Show this to everyone who hates on synyster gates and says all he's good for is playing fast
Shane Pettie
I won't see you tonight (part 1) had slow paced solo guitar
actually synyster is known for playing harmoniously and Zacky is the one who is bashed on for knowing only fast guitar solos
This is fast as fuck, what are you smoking
How did this video prove anyone of those "people" wrong?
@@HruaiaVaiphei3 Zacky was and still is not known for any type of guitar solo. They let him solo on Clairvoyant Disease from Waking the Fallen and it's a laughably simple pentatonic solo. Every other recorded solo from WtF and on has been Synyster Gates. He has always been the shredder between the two.
versatile he is...very very versatile
I love to go back and watch this video, he is simply amazing at everything he does
omg yes
What would u know about his skills!? Hahaha
This just gave me so much more respect for him, sorry I ever criticized you senior Gates.
I have to admit I didn't think much of Gates before this video . I take back all the bad comments I have made about him .
he had such a sweet voice im dead
has :3 he ain't dead :3
Syn’s legit. He’s got the Gypsy Jazz picking hand technique.
Not really. A bit of trivia: in manouche, you break the wrist (like flamenco players playing with their thumbs), you keep your hand above the table, you down pick every time you go from one string to another, including when going upwards. He doesn't do any of those things, that's why he sounds a bit weak compared to the backing track. Great player though.
He's got the chops, that's for sure. Not taking ANYTHING away from him, but imagine that played with only two fingers on the fretboard... that was Django.
He looks like Christian Bale + young Christopher Walken
Berly Tannyono Putra and Edward Scissorhands
KD Lang and Mark Hoppus
I was staring at a picture of Christopher Walken and Syn side by side for a good 2 minutes the other week thinking the exact same thing lmao
and Paulo Dybala, football player from Argentina
What... He can do swing.. wtf
just amazing but the "so, anyway" at the end made me want to burn my guitar
Damn I love gypsy jazz and Synyster Gates. Now I can have both in my life!
Ufff, que calidad que tiene Synyster. Necesito un álbum suyo en solitario
this guy just continues to amaze me.
Synyster’s picking tehnique was something else
He is definitely not the number 1 best guitarist out there. He is, however, my number 1 favorite. Keep doing what you do Syn.
This is why I love Syn and A7X ...very well rounded and talented motherfuckers. Their music has been a big part of my life for sure...big fan thanks for the video
Synyster Gates playing Minor Swing by Django Reinhardt literally makes me the happiest ever
You can only travel the same road so many times before it becomes mundane.
My hats off to him for spreading out and continuing his quest.
Oh my gawd he's so hawt ❤️
So relaxing, more of this please :)
mrwaxwing123
Believe it or not, my father showed me that player and I love Minor Swing! Its so spririted (i cant find a better word im not english)! ..and now I read you comment :D
Evolutionz Check out the guitarist Bireli Langrene. Absolute beast on gipsy jazz/jazz-fusion guitar.
Why so many haters? A7X actually has good musicians and get hate. So strange
Unbelievable Unbelievable
Him mentioning John5 makes me want to see a video of those 2 doing a jam session. Both with acoustics and Syn play playing his Gypsy Jazz and John5 doing his "chicken pickin".
is there anything this guy CAN'T play?!?!?! that was awesome and beautiful at the same. I was smiling throughout the whole video.
guy like john 5 apply country style in his metal music, paul gilbert apply blues in his metal music....and then here comes synyster gates who apply jazz in his metal music...you can hear that in their new song called the stage.... never underestimate slow music...
I'd rather see him do Gyspy jazz than go ta an AX7 show, seems he just exudes more musicality in this setting.
Like nothing!!! He's one of my favorite lead guitarist! A7X 4EVER =)
good, but look Bireli Lagrene
Mafia: The City Of Lost Heawen)) And...Gates look like young Rew.
I appreciate the fact that he's playing in the gypsy jazz style and is expanding his knowledge, but he's just not doing it well in this video. Very poor performance.
Lol, this is a masterclass. The point is to give knowledge and show his techniques, not to show off his amazing skills.
That's because he doing too much upstrokes. In the gypsy jazz it's not well, although there's so many sweeps doing by Sébastien Ginniaux, Yorgui Loeffler, Bireli Lagrene, Joscho Stephan, but those masters don't overdoing it. This guy still need to listen Django as more as he only can. If he would studied for few years Stochelo Rosenberg's performances note by note, and studied TRUE gypsy picking, he wouldn't maked master classes, because he realized that there is a tonnes of work for him first of all. He needs to study classic gypsy licks, lines with correct picking.
I don' think he's trying to imitate Django or anybody, I sort of think he's adding his own flare to it. Which is good. Copying is unoriginal and generally boring.
that was better than the past two albums of avenged sevenfold.
Dillion Stocker actually Nightmare album is awesome dude)
Dillion Stocker ahaha the sadness xD
haha so when haters can't still hate Syn, they start hating his band....
Best modern day guitarist imo.
I really think that he's the best guitarist out there.
Can't wait until hes old enough to be considered a legend
I wouldn't say the best, but he's definitely one of the best modern guitarists out there.
I agree. I wish their recent music reflected their talents more, though.
Emil Werstler maybe?
hey, check out Paul Waggoner,. best riffage ive ever heard. Type in 'BTBAM Best Solos' for a taste of the glory...see what it tastes like -nacho libre
he is a bad ass electric guitar player... acoustic not so much.. Mikael from Opeth he does electric and acoustic flawlessly..
He's a really good guitarist overall. Or at least I think so... lol
"Master class."
Wow!! My son was one of the 10 winners! He and another winner went to Nashville and formed a band called Archeons
if your into this check out angelo de barre
He's got a long way to go.
zacky v has left the chat
I see where Pinkley smooth got their sound from
Not a fan of Avenge 7X but this gives me a new found respect for synyster and his musicianship. It's awesome to find out that modern guitarists in metal bands like, listen and respect such a great art form like gypsy jazz.
If only he played in the 80-90s....He would be a god by now. (he already is actually)
Well I am not a guitar player, so i dont know the technical aspects of it. But I am amazed by the comments that say they are surprised that he can play this style. Do yall actually thing that metal players cant play other styles? Or for that matter any genre of music. Most of these players play all kind of styles. They may not be masters of certain styles, and they know where their bread is buttered at. He makes his living playing metal. There is no telling what he plays in HIS own time.
I guarantee you that 99% of professional metal guitarists today can't improvise jazz as well as this guy did, and nowhere near as well as a professional jazz musician
in an old interview he use to learn jazz tho
So talented he’s even playing the rhythm at the same time you just can’t see it
scales are about the easiest thing to do musically. He needs to work on his chord progressions.
mech pilot hey where's a vid of you doing easy scales?
It takes a level of insecurity to feel the need to post something like this that I genuinely pity you. Almost none of what he played was a scale. Gypsy Jazz style solos like this one use arpeggiated chord progressions to manipulate the voicing of the main chord progression. Pay attention to how often and seamlessly the tonal center will shift, changing where the melody resolves. Clearly he understands complex chord structures on a very deep, subconscious level given he is improvising this. Man I hope this was just a poorly-expressed joke bro.
Hate Avenged Sevenfold. Loved this.
1:07 lil pump
Nope. He said "la pompe". Nice try.😑
Anyone have this tab? It sounds like a fun little riff like the outro in Sidewinder
+Zackary P You don't tab jazz dude. Plus it's just an Am triad and a Dm triad. Chords are A-6, D-6, and E7
His attack is horrible
how so? just curious
he doesn't use the traditional gypsy picking technique, so basically, he can never really get that sound unless he changes the way he picks. but playing gypsy jazz is obviously just a hobby of his, so there's really no need.
This man, I gotta hand it to him. He is not only REALLY talented, he is my guitar hero. Love you, Gates
omfg Syn is the best guitarist in the world and a7x is the best band in the world!!!! deathbats 4ever
I only have acoustic guitar and i want to be fluent on playing lead solo like him. It'd be fun if there's an electric guitar. How can i be good like him even he played solo like that on acoustic
This sucks WAY less than AX7
***** lol listen to anything besides Hail to the King? Maybe some God Hates Us or Not Ready to Die?
Either way. So what? Just because it gets radio play doesnt mean they did that on purpose. I personally want another CoE type album too, but its whatever. *****
Yea it's obvious bands who make 7+ minute songs are just trying to be on the radio.
I hope that was sarcasm ^^ Caltack8
Nick Kapa complete sarcasm ... people say they tried to be on the radio with city of evil ... pretty sure the shortest track on there was probably 5 minutes long. did any of those people listen to blinded in chains, trashed and scattered, sidewinder, the wicked end, or m.i.a.? how can you hear those songs and say they're trying to be on the radio
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE ❤️ LOVE ❤️ LOVE ❤️ LOVE ❤️ LOVE THIS VIDEO 📹..BECAUSE HE MENTION'S UNCLE~MR.JOHN-5...PHENOMENAL GUITARIST 🎸....THIS IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE VIDEO'S!!!!!!
He is my type of guitar player... exposed to all different music genres! that was amazing!
Awful tone, why does he have to hit everything so hard? I think he's been using active pickups for far too long and forgotten what dynamics are.
There is no right or wrong in someone's own tone, melody or his own creativity...it may be awful to you but it sounds good to him and his fans...:) Peace !
It has nothing to do with his playing. That's the tone of gypsy jazz, and he actually does it surprisingly well for someone with a very different musical background. That tone is "The Pump" technique he talked about. It's where the right hand picks down any time you go from one string to another. It creates a louder volume and gives it a percussive effect that is tonally characteristic of gypsy jazz. I hope that clears things up a bit for you.
+ Dane H Thanks for that Dane, really good comment. I would add that I'm familiar with the pump but my concern is more for the regularity with which he uses the same strength of plucking. If you listen to guys like Django then I've always thought what made his playing so great was the lilting dance of his dynamics. Almost every note is played with a different strength to the last and you get this wonderful dancing quality to sound. That is what I was saying I felt Synyster's playing lacked. With that said I've watched it again and he does seem to settle in a bit after the first few passages so maybe some of it's just that he hadn't warmed up before he started.
I couldn't agree more. I noticed the lacking in tonal variance, as you did, but I thought the tone overall was befitting, so I didn't even think to mention that. But you're right Django was great with those lilting, dancing melodies, and this was rather stiff. Thanks for answering!
Another thing to keep in mind, while he may love and take influence from Gypsy jazz he isn'te a gypsy jazz player. If you'll pardon the Hendrix comparison, Jimi wasn't a blues player, I'm sure to Robert Johnson or Honey Boy Edwards he would have sounded far too noisy and notey.
Syn, is not a jazz guitarist
Way beyond John 5 for me , his got the groove and Django's lines going Beautiful. Great thing of music it's all selective
