Hello friends, I hope you enjoyed this sit down session with Barry. Expect many more tutorials with other master guitarist in the coming days. Enjoy your practice!
I discovered this rhythm in a subway of Paris while looking at the face of fancy stranger passengers and a 3 member band playing while standing up against our wagon. It was awesome. I paid like 2 euros for a nice ride and great music. I just needed my glass of bubbly champagne but...they would’ve thrown me out.
Strange thing, i've been meaning to pick up some Django for a while, my style has slowly been slipping towards gypsy jazz for a while. I watched this, and realised I pretty much already knew how to play this. Picked it up instantly, but the lesson truly gave it that push. Thanks a lot, gonna learn some more!
You can play la pompe on literally any acoustic guitar. And you can play lead on any acoustic guitar, or any other electric guitar can give a jazzy neck pup tone.
This video is excellent! I’ve have been a private guitar instructor for twenty five years, and I can’t stand videos where the instructor doesn’t reference the name of the notes. Thank you for being thorough.
Ha, it seemed to be the case for Django. Barry and I were actually discussing how many of these techniques were developed around Django’s injury. The limitations were in someways the catalyst for an entire sub-genre.
Yes. Certain things do work better when you have to play them with only two fingers. It also reduces the number of options your brain must choose from when you want to play a desired sound ( a lick).
always found gypsy jazz so compelling but confusing to play, this video made it so easy! thank you

Many thanks for this vidéo, i saw a lot of lessons about this song and the technic but here the most simple to learn the first chords and "solis" , once again, many thanks, cheers from france
I was literally waiting for this lessooooooooon! finally someone did a beginner gipsy jazz lesson thanks so much!super cool! only problem: I have no idea how to mute the strings in this chord (Am6) :'( anyone?
By six degrees of separation I’ve also learn from Stephane Wrembel. Stephane learned from one of the families who played alongside Django. Been playing since with a “broken wrist” since 2016. Cheers from FL
Please say "LA" pompe, La as in large in English. Because when you say "LES" pompe, with les as in "lessons" it's a slang word for ... shoes... But no matter, great video, thanks.
Hi, thanks for the video. Learnt my first gypsy jazz song because it. I have a question though. What kind of picks are recommended to play gypsy jazz? Or can it be played with any thickness/material of pick??
Excuse me guys but I got a question, in all other tutorials on youtube about la pompe they do a little upstroke+downstroke on the bass strings then a big downstroke. What you’re teaching here seems little different to me, only two downstrokes. Please can you explain? Thanks
Trying to get back into guitar. Why do you start at the fourth fret instead of at the bottom of the neck? I’ve watched a lot of vids and it seems to be the thing. Is it because of the key?
How are you silencing the first 2 strings? When I play it sounds nothing like yours because the first two strings keep ringing, but since I’m not fretting them they don’t silence.
Hi, sure enjoyed the lesson!. One question though, when playing the rhythm part, the strings should be muted, but with which hand do you mute?, the strumming hand or the fretting hand?. Thanks.
Late reply, but posting it for other folks who are browsing the comments. Often in jazz stuff the root is said to be 'implied', whether its from the chord changes in the song, or just from the bassist playing the root. The E7/B that we see contains a B (5th of E) a G# (3rd of E) and a D (7th of E), so we have most of the ingredients of an E except for the root itself, but we say that its close enough. If you are feeling spicy while playing you can bounce the bass note from the B (7th fret E string) to the E (7th fret A string) on each strum to really sell the 'E' nature of the chord. There are more reasons as to why it should be called an E7 vs a Bmi6 that barely matter in the end, but it has to do with the scale we are in and the relation that an E7 has to an Ami.

Great lesson :) Is the acoustic guitar with the smaller hole called something special? And Gypsy Jazz is normally played with nylon strings right? :)

So great, thank you!

Excellent tutorial, thanks for posting 🎼👍
Excellent lesson. I just ordered my guitar, and can't wait to play this the day it gets in!
Very very good. Thank you guys.
Does it work better with fewer functional fingers?
Ha, it seemed to be the case for Django. Barry and I were actually discussing how many of these techniques were developed around Django’s injury. The limitations were in someways the catalyst for an entire sub-genre.
No, the half diminished chord is pretty hard.
Yes. Certain things do work better when you have to play them with only two fingers. It also reduces the number of options your brain must choose from when you want to play a desired sound ( a lick).
Also, Django used all four fingers and even thumb for chords.
Hello Django Reinhardt

Thanks for this.
That guitar looks like it has a thin mustache
thats the whole point, the reason behind that design
In fact those are moustaches
These style guitars were modelled after a lot of Django's guitars
Oh bless you.
It’s actually called mustache too
Thank you ❤
Great!
Thanks for the lesson. Subbed!

Hell Yeah!!! Philly in the house!!!! Brushing u on my gypsy jazz, thanks for the lesson
Thanks for the great video friends! Really gave me a lot of help with “LE POMP”
"Ring / Chuck". I like that way to think about it. Great lesson. Thank you.

Outstanding lesson! Making the impossible, very possible!

Django Reinhardt was the guy who rejuvenated the popularity of playing Jazz on a Steel String Acoustic Guitar
It wasn't really jazz though was it! He invented a new style
@@haggishead7558 Eddie Lang and Freddie Green were known for playing Jazz on the Acoustic Guitar but Django Reinhardt Rejuvenated it.
Barry seems like a great guy.
Great sound, thanks for sharing!
Cool
Hi guys, thanks for the great video. Which gypsy jazz guitars are using? Company and model-wise?
Really enjoyed this. First thing I looked at when I started to learn gypsy jazz. Thank you!
My first try. Worked out pretty well. Not hard to follow. Thanks, fellas, this is what I've been looking for.
When masters collide...
Finally, the chords for Spiderman
Please say "LA" pompe, La as in large in English. Because when you say "LES" pompe, with les as in "lessons" it's a slang word for ... shoes... But no matter, great video, thanks.
La pompe is also the singular, of course.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Wow henial
That was great! A song that would be nice to see done is "The Third Man" theme.
If only I had a zither.
No doubt it's played on zither, but I've heard great versions of it on guitar. For example, Sungha Jung plays an excellent rendition.
are you muting the 2 bottom strings with your index finger on the first chord you did?
yes the bottom two and the A string are muted
You can also mute with your ring finger
Hi, thanks for the video. Learnt my first gypsy jazz song because it. I have a question though. What kind of picks are recommended to play gypsy jazz? Or can it be played with any thickness/material of pick??
genuine tortoise shell
Wegen pick 3mm
which guitar did Django prefer? the wide sound hole or tiny sound hole?
Gypst jazz is the bane of my existence..
Philly style? I like it already.
What kind of guitar and strings do you use for gypsy jazz
Awesome
wellllllllll good to know that i need to know how to do vibrato and bend notes in order to play gypsy- guess i need to start there :/

What guitars are you using? ( please tell us )
Excuse me guys but I got a question, in all other tutorials on youtube about la pompe they do a little upstroke+downstroke on the bass strings then a big downstroke. What you’re teaching here seems little different to me, only two downstrokes. Please can you explain? Thanks
There are numerous variations to the la pompe, different songs call a different approach... and some players prefer to fill in the space.
Great video. Not sure its beginner level though
Trying to get back into guitar. Why do you start at the fourth fret instead of at the bottom of the neck? I’ve watched a lot of vids and it seems to be the thing. Is it because of the key?
guess ill come back here when im more advanced in my playing 👶
This might help ya 🍼💪 ;)
Can anyone explain the process at 7:06 ?
How did he create that sound with hammer on?
How are you silencing the first 2 strings? When I play it sounds nothing like yours because the first two strings keep ringing, but since I’m not fretting them they don’t silence.
Use your fretting hand to mute the other strings....your fingers should lightly lay on the strings you want muted
@@tylerkeegan5615 thank you! as you can guess, I'm a beginner to guitar in general lol
Falou tocar a música toda com o solo
Hi, sure enjoyed the lesson!. One question though, when playing the rhythm part, the strings should be muted, but with which hand do you mute?, the strumming hand or the fretting hand?. Thanks.
How many years previous guitar experience is needed before beginning this?
Are the strings typically nylon or steel in the genre?
Definitely steel, though I’m sure there are exceptions
The man with the cream colored shirt sounds like a DJ. Do they have DJs for Gypsy Jazz?
Nope, most of the time gypsy jazz has no singing at all. Let alone Djing.
7:19 DOG! ♥
Hello Barry . Could you please explain why a Bmi6 suddenly changes name into E7/b evenwhile there is no E in the chord. I'am confused.

Otari mx 5050?
Do you have to buy a gypsy jazz guitar to play this music? What About a classical guitar
This looks so easy I’m gonna have a go tomorrow
What does it mean to deaden the strings? how?
Mute them by placing a fingertip over them.
Give that man a treble whiskey
What’s the song that was used as the intro music?
Never mind🤦♂️😂
How about some info on those guitars?
Yes. I have the same Question. I notice that they both have a zero fret. Also what are the strings?
Anyone know where to get these guitars ?
Google Selmer and Maccafferi guitars.
