That depth map is pure sorcery. I have no clue how it guesses the depth. But from the examples I have seen it seems more accurate than it has any right to be.
I would guess that these kind of tools are implemented by using Neural Networks. They are very expensive to train, but incredibly cheap to use once trained
As far as I have read, it is a Neural Network (or Neural Engine as BMD calls it in Resolve Studio). So no guessing required. Though, I still regard it as kind of sorcery as these neural engines are more trained than programmed. I mean, this is in stark contrast to old workflows where you really can understand how it can look at RGB values and have threshold values where something should be transparent. There are well established and understandable maths around how blending modes work. How curve adjustments should behave. With Neural Networks... the folks at BMD can basically just shrug and say "dunno, We told it to git gud and it got gud. We have no real clue how it got there but it seems to work"...
I'm excited for this tool for two reasons: 1. Great for colour grading and having more customization 2. Being able to use this to make an alpha channel will potentially get rid of the need for roto work and it could revolutionise keying
The Depth Map is a great new tool. Along with using it the way you demonstrated, I’m looking at it as a way of adding layers of fog or smoke to a scene. Either way, it has a lot of possible applications to it. Great video.
This tool it's just mind-blowing, I guess it's using some sort of AI like the Magic Mask. I don't know if there's another tool like this one with this kinds of results and performance, but just not for color grading, I could see me using this a lot for all sorts VFX and compositing work. Awesome man, thanks for the quick look.
Thanks man, appreciate the feedback. I really would like to know how it’s working under the hood too but I totally agree it’s got a lot of practical applications. I’m glad to see people feel the same way I do i think it’s a super addition to the software!
This is definitely an AI process. I almost fell off my chair when they announced this one. There's a plug-in for After Effects called Depth Scanner which does the same thing, but it's so incredibly heavy for the computer. I'm so damn happy I can now just do this easily within Resolve instead of opening After Effects to get a depth map render. Seems like every DRV release there are fewer things I need After Effects for and I really gotta tip my hat to Black Magic for that.
exactly, I agree with you and Nathan too , I jumped at Depth Scanner when it came out thinking of both grading applications and vfx. At first the depth map was popping too much so it was like, too noticeable on the grade but then months later the algorithm got improved and it was like perfect. Fast forward to the other day and Resolve just plops that into their update, im like well hot damn Blackmagic. Really exciting stuff. And on your other note , yes. I paired it with another plugin in after effects to create a 3d displacement map and successfully created 3D depth from a 2D clip (Blackmagic RAW no less) which i'll starting to use to create content for the Oculus here in the next few months. Cheers to Blackmagic, insane tool to add to their already incredibly robust CC tools
@@NathanOrlick That's funny, I was actually searching for an Ae plugin for this kind of process but maybe I will wait for Blackmagic implementation in Resolve, because, as you say, outside of mograph, Ae it`s just a gigantic pain in the ass whith that lackluster performance. I hope Adobe, some day, decide to do a true revamp of Ae's render engine, at this point its's just archaic.
I can see myself using this ofx in my work. Thanks for showcasing it. Adding the layer and connecting keys. Would just adding an outside node accomplish the same objective? I haven't downloaded or tried v18 yet, but when I use a power window on a subject, I usually add the outside node at the same time. wondering if that works with this OFX. Great stuff.
It looks amazing, I really could have done with this tool on a recent project to do exactly as you showed, bringing an interview subject out a bit. Thanks for the demo.
Cool! But how use this map for Bokeh??? I cant search this example. All video only about change of color, but how make cool Bokeh, with real optics de focus - i cant see...
Thanks for this! Just curious, how do you create a serial node? When I right click to add a new node, I only get these options: corrector, parallel, splitter, combiner, layer and key.
Thanks for the video mate! Pumped about this new feature, haven’t had the chance to sit down and update my workstation yet so I’m living vicariously through RUclips videos until later!
Thanks, this is an amazing tool! I'll be using it a lot for the second example you showed when the background has an unwanted color cast while skin colors are correct, or also for similar problems with luminance to add more dynamic range. I can also see myself using it to add effects to the background for atmospheric purposes. Stuff like haze or fog, or anything really.
Can you use the depth map to insert FOOTAGE behind the subject? Be it an entire background replacement or a motion graphic, lighting effects (like streaks of light, light/shadow patterns, etc)?
Thanks! I added the node and then the effect and wondered why it wouldn't work. Damn it this program has some odd quirks that get you hunting around for ages wondering why something won't work!
Great work explaining this despite your initial disclaimer. I was just trying it out to add depth of field to some iPhone shots with a busy foreground and background and quickly hit a limit with it though I can see it working wonders with less ambitious shots from secondary cameras.
No problem! In the simple shots I used here no tracking was needed as the depth doesnt really change. Im honestly not too sure how it will work in terms of tracking as I havent gotten that far with playing with it yet. Someone else has comented saying the depth map doesnt work with the object tracker so for now it seems the tool is limited to a subject that only moves in x and y space but not z space.
I can see myself if ever I use m43 cameras and match full frame cameras by using lens blur. Probably make it look like “anamorphic” too through anamorphism in the Lens Blur ofx.
Begs the question why a video synced lidar depth maps (dji have the tech) are not a standard part of video work flows yet - it would be interesting to see an NLE add this as a feature.
Do you have any idea how to export the matte itself out with alpha? I've searched this for hours and still can't find how to not just create the matte, but export an external matte of the sene to use.
No tracking needed. It looks like theres no real way of tracking it for now (based on my extremely limited experience). If your subject only moves in the x and y axis your all good. If they move on the z axis then your going to have difficulty.

I will never understand why companies like Adobe ignore so many potential customers by not providing any meaningful on-ramp into their suite of products. They are turning away potential lifetime customers. I downloaded the trial version of Adobe Premiere. It came with three uploads. Adobe's goal seems to be: Here this should give you plenty of opportunity to try out our product and make your decision. Well maybe if you are already working in the video editing world this would be true. But what about all the people (myself included) who are interested in exploring video editing or who just want to make the occasional personal video. Adobe's monthly fee with no ability to pause billing is a no go for beginners, so Adobe misses out on that customer. Had Adobe made a reasonable on-ramp for someone like me, they could build a relationship and graduate the customer up into the full pay level over time. Instead, I installed DaVinci Resolve 18, watched a few how-to videos and published my first video yesterday and have already received a lot of compliments. Today I uninstalled Adobe Premiere.
In my experience this has happened when the foreground subject is too close to a background and the tool is struggling to make the separation. The example for me was a woman sitting in a chair right against a wall, just no real depth for it to use in its process I guess.
That depth map is pure sorcery. I have no clue how it guesses the depth. But from the examples I have seen it seems more accurate than it has any right to be.
I have the exact same thoughts! Cannot wait to put it through its paces and find the limit 🤗

If you wanna learn a bit about the tech behind it search for "monocular depth estimation"... pretty amazing stuff.

Hey Jim, I took a quick look this morning and you're on the money. Yes, Outside Node works perfectly!
Is Depth Map only available in the Resolve Studio (paid) version?
Yes.
It looks amazing, I really could have done with this tool on a recent project to do exactly as you showed, bringing an interview subject out a bit. Thanks for the demo.
Glad it was helpful!
I was looking forward to using this tool just like this! Thank you so much for the quick showcase!
You’re very welcome! Have fun with it 👍
Their named Black Magic for a reason. Would this work with lens blur to add shallow depth effect?
Cool! But how use this map for Bokeh??? I cant search this example. All video only about change of color, but how make cool Bokeh, with real optics de focus - i cant see...
Thank you! Did you by any chance experience any performance issues? I mean, the computer doesn't choke?
Thanks for this! Just curious, how do you create a serial node? When I right click to add a new node, I only get these options: corrector, parallel, splitter, combiner, layer and key.
Hey, that’s actually quite strange that it’s not showing up for you! The shortcut for a serial node is “alt s”.
This would be great for qualifying skin tones can't wait to try it out
I can already see how useful this feature will be. Thx for sharing!
Your videos are quite outstanding. Please, plan to do a detailed tutorial on this new feature. Btw, can this feature be used to blurr the background?
Thanks. Yeah adding blur is one of the examples that BMD used in their offical launch video as it turns out :)

depth map is really powerful!
I'll certainly be using this tool, for sure. I'm sure it will work wonders for action cameras that don't have any depth of field like my GoPros
great video! gives me a lot of inspiration for using these depth maps.
@Filmresolved Great video mate! Thank you :)
Question: Is Depth Map only working in Studio? In the free version I get the Davinci logo lay over.. 😢
Yes, you'll get a watermark on any feature that is studio verison I'm afraid.
@@FilmResolved Got it, will get my lifetime license then. Best greetings from Berlin
@@kirill030 Honestly, you wont regret investing in the studio version! Have fun with it :)
I feel that id use this feature to add some slight mist / Fog to the background. especially when being outside.
Awesome! Direct to point, well explained. Thanks!
is depth blur work?? good videos though!
inside the color page, is there a way to use a depth map image produced when rendering?
Clever, and well explained!
Thanks for posting, do you have to track the shot as well?

when i link to the new serial node it wont let me adjust and is not showing the key? is there something im missing?

Wow, this has really helped me out so much :] thank youi!
You bet 👍

Do you need the studio version to access the depth map tool?

How does depth map run on and m1 mini 16gig
Do you have any idea how to export the matte itself out with alpha? I've searched this for hours and still can't find how to not just create the matte, but export an external matte of the sene to use.
I’m afraid I do not. Interesting idea though and yet another reason this should be on the fusion page!

wish this was on the free version
Wish they let you use object mask but unfortunately not in the new update yet
I know and there’s no key frames either so it’s seems for now it’s limited to x and y axis movement only.
@@FilmResolved definitely want to try this depth plug in, I'm tired of Qualifying and not being about to hit what I need. So hoping this will work
