Mehldau's playing here is like some kind of magic trick. Likening it to pulling a rabbit out of a hat doesn't really cut it though. It's more like he's pulling an 18 wheeler out an ant's ass.
Listen, Brad Mehldau was incredible in those days but this right here is a result of chemistry between these guys. They are all great on their own but this is alchemy!
Why doesnt everybody realize what a masterful saxophonist and creative improvisor this guy is. Hes a no jive, no bullshit player always in the moment and technically competent enough to go anywhere musically. He and Brad are musical brothers. There duets are astonishing. Amen
I have watched this performance many times. They are totally commited to swinging hard. Someone should put this in a space ship and send it out into the universe so others worlds can see what we are capable as humans!
What did I just witness. I've read many comments saying things like "how is Brad human", most of the time thinking something like "with enough practice anyone can reach that level". But this leaves me truly flabbergasted. What did he dooo, how does one get that good?? As another comment already said, it really feels absurd.
1. Opportunity (good teachers, connections, musicians in family, early exposure to music) 2. Hard work Talent doesn't really exist in the way most people think. Brad wasn't born with a gift, he just had lots of opportunities come together (started playing at age 4 because of parents), enjoyed piano and worked really fucking hard at it.
Normalmente he escuchado éste tema con orquestación completa... y no desmerece. Alguna nota se le escapa a ella, pero bien. Una gran versión de un clásico de siempre.
i’m speechless at every part. too much to say. the momentum in the drums, unreal classical ass out there piano solo, bass is just nailing it, the sax is from the heavens and what in the hell chord is the end??? probably the best thing i’ve seen. so much to take in
What a formidable band, and all so young! When Mehldau solos he takes you on a different planet far away from ours where everything is so much different from what we are accustomed to. He’s really the most exciting jazz musician not only of pianists but to me of any jazz musician alive right now.
Mehldau was a full blown junkie at this point, and it’s hard to watch him here, yet so extraordinary a performance.
5:04 Find someone who looks at you the way Christian McBride looks at Brad Mehldau.
