Ballard's right hand ride provides the rhythmic wash upon which the whole magic carpet flies.

So, this is funny: I always see comments about how some rando knew or knew of the celeb. This time it's true: knew of, that is. Mehldau was a year behind me at Hall High School in West Hartford. I don't think I ever spoke to him, but I do clearly recall a talent show appearance by him in which he started off with a Chopin-esque musing-exploration that he stretched out as long as he could till bursting without warning into a blistering bluesy rollick. To thunderous applause. Hall had a fantastic jazz program--Joel Frahm came out of that, too. I just went there--but being a drummer now I really wish I'd gotten that training back in the day. Wasn't allowed to play drums. Oh, well. :) Glad to see people making great music, for sure.

I don't think I've ever heard Jeff Ballard sound better than he does here. I love Jorge Rossy and I'm usually less fond of Mr. Ballard, but man, he really sounds fantastic on this date.

50 ways to NOT play a cheesy Paul Simon tune is a more apt title. The Very Thought of You works until it doesn’t(when the flow stops at Brad’s extended solo). On the other hand, Brad really shines with She’s Leaving Home where he demonstrates the art of playing softer but flowing louder(until he doesn’t). The other tunes are not worth mentioning. Overall, the bass and drums are annoying and do not compliment the piano enough to justify their inclusion.
