I love Peter Bernstein's silences. He gives the notes time and space to resonate properly. Too many guitarists throw themselves into the instrument and overwhelm you with a flood notes. Bernstein has a completely different approach, and I much prefer it.
I noticed as much myself! He plays so simple; a note here, a note there, a phrase over there, a little repetition... but you can see it is coming from deep inside. Amazing player.
Nobody plays a melody on guitar better than Peter Bernstein! Before you get all excited, please note, I said "nobody is better", not "he is the best" - there's a subtle, but important difference. Anyhow, look at the focus he puts into every note. Short phrases that work together into larger statements. He delights and surprises the listener.
I admit I was unfamiliar with Peter Bernstein until now but you're spot-on with "nobody is better." He plays what's right for the music. Definitely a fantastic new find for me, will be exploring his stuff soon.
@Mr. Neuman Thanks. I admit I just now looked up sycophantic. Good word! I'm an engineer. We rarely go over two syllables. :). I'm definitely going to use it as it is perfect for situations like this. Thanks for the lesson.
This guitarist needs to practice a lot stuff like Giant Steps for the beginning. This man is completely lost in Mehldau's harmonical contexte (I talk about the first song, let's see "la suite")
No, he doesn't put any focus into every single note, it's just crispation and constipation. No liberation no exaltation, neither any dynamics, nothing is build up - that's wank-guitar with no release !! Horrible stupid notes having a horribly lovely sound - a summit of paradox !
I lived on 106th and Riverside for 10+ years so Augie’s and later Smoke was my neighborhood jazz spot, and where I heard Peter Bernstein. I miss those days! Brushing with greatness is definitely a regular occurrence in NYC if you make the effort to get out there.
Brad Mehldau is fantastic at "not playing"! Watch him closely and you see how he hears the notes without moving his fingers. His statements are 40 % of the melodies he could be playing. No noodling. Same for Peter Bernstein. Uniquely conceived.
One of the finest quartets ever assembled. Brad Mehldau is a virtuoso and Peter's solos are so tasty and melodic. Music so fresh you can listen to it over and over and find something new every time.
I personally think that this is one of the best quartet ever when down to guitar and piano together. Love both Mehldau and Bernstein unbelievable interplay between the two..
Excelente concierto!!!! Excelentes musicos!!!! Brad Mehldau tiene un estilo único y muy personal!!!! Muchas gracias por compartir esta joya de concierto!!!!!!
It’s called hard work, practice, more practice and passion for the craft. Throw in a tinge of creative genius and the “other-worldly” sensation that you experience only appears to come from an ethereal realm. It’s very much grounded here on earth.
I must have heard this for the first time 12 or so years ago. My first experience with each one of these musicians. (I’ve been hooked ever since.) The shifting, ethereal beauty of “Buddha Realm” gets me every time.
Pat metheny once quoted guitar and piano is a difficult jazz form.his time with Brad's trio was rather experimental. This is an example of wonderful playing ,I love it
Peter is quiet when Brad plays, and he don't use chords very much here. I heard Sco say that with another melodic instrument like piano you must be careful not to interfer. Sco plays a lot with chords, Pat does to, and with Brad it is quite impossible I think. And Brad has lot of difficulties not to solo while playing.
This is one of the most grateful jazz reunions of all time, in my opinion. A session where each musician has established a perfect part of an utterly singular moment, that unfortunately probably never will be re-edited anymore. A jewel, a unique piece of the creative genius of these four brilliant musicians.
What an astonishing band. Brad is absolutely amazing. I'm looking forward to listening to you in November in Athens Greece. The rhythm is so flawless. I wish to play with you sometime.
The cool thing I love about you awesome group is that none of you are stuck up and arrogant! You guys show respect for what you do! You fine men show a lot of humbleness and take heart in what you do! This is what make you cool band so sensational! You can tell how your audience is reacting to each mantelpiece you perform! Again, you cool, awesome distinguished guys are sensational!! You group deserves an 10 star rating!! God richly bless all of you fine, fine cool men! He loves you us very much, so does You audience! I could listen to you all day and never get tired of it! I am amazed at how humble all of you guys are and how your demeanor is while you perform! I love it! I am thoroughly and very impressed with your awesome group man! I ‘m telling you, you fine men are making history dudes! God richly bless you and stay strong! You have awesome audiences depending on you beautiful performances man! Take care dudes!!!👆👍❤️✝️
I could sit and relax with awesome music like yours always! You guys are awesome and sensational! Your awesome performance will make history! Awesome, cool, distinguished musicians man! Your cool drummer and your bass player are so, so cool! Your group is so blessed and wonderful! I hope you get invitations to perform all over the world! Your blessed piano player is so cool! We love your group man! God richly bless you fine, fine men!
A pity Larry Grenadier isn't a bit more forward in the YT mix. Jeff Ballard's playing recalls Tony Williams on Maiden Voyage. But otherwise perfect. I write as I listen for the third time.
Absolutely awesome performance man! I am partial to drummers! Your awesome drummer is sensational! Your group is very blessed and very talented dude! God richly bless you fine, awesome and very cool group! We love you very much man! Take care!
I highly commend you awesome, talented, cool, and very blessed drummer! God richly bless your awesome talent man! Coolest performance! I love your bass drum/ crash cymbal sync! Awesome, awesome sound man! I hope you get invites all over the world! You deserve it dude! God bless!!
Their jackets looked like they came straight from the drycleaners! No red wine or pizza topping stains on them. Nor cigarette butt burns in their shirts. Are they REAL jazz musicians? I think not.
Sorry, but this trio needs Steve Morris, not Peter Bernstein.. You can hear them open back up after his trite soloing. Every time...Peter takes it nowhere.
Peter Bernstein's solo on Buddha Realm is definitely pathetic (the equivalent of Tommy Flannagan on Giant Steps) but nah, the band members themselves are great.
So proud of you little brother! Can't wait till we can all get together again!
little brother? I thought gods simply emerged out of the ether and came into existence
wot in tarnation?!
POV: family get-together with Brad but there's no piano 💀 . "We don't have the space for it." 💀💀💀
I love Peter Bernstein's silences. He gives the notes time and space to resonate properly. Too many guitarists throw themselves into the instrument and overwhelm you with a flood notes. Bernstein has a completely different approach, and I much prefer it.
Yes he is never as good as the moments when he is not playing ah ah
I noticed as much myself! He plays so simple; a note here, a note there, a phrase over there, a little repetition... but you can see it is coming from deep inside. Amazing player.
Space is such an underestimated component in the jazz language

I grew up playing with all these cats, Every one a great player, so musical.
You grew up playing with Brad Mehldau and Peter Bernstein? How do you know these guys?
@@joshistyping playing around NYC. With Peter mainly at Augie's which is now Smoke; with Brad at Sweet Basil, then later w/ Dianne Reeves.
@@robscheps7722 Oh my god, if this is how casually you brush with greatness in NY I’ve gotta base a music career there one day.

i agree 100% i will also state that the same goes for Larry and Jeff (both are in total control here)
Hatts off to Jeff Balland

I am officially fan of Brad Mehldau: what a distinctive style he has!
The best music for a loooong high way trip - very, very nice 💗

I strongly agree.
Peter Bernstein did a good job this evening.
Yes he is one of the best guitarist in my opinion
Pat metheny once quoted guitar and piano is a difficult jazz form.his time with Brad's trio was rather experimental. This is an example of wonderful playing ,I love it
Yeah, may be Metheny did, but Scofield did not.
However, when I listen to this band, Metheny might be right !
Peter is quiet when Brad plays, and he don't use chords very much here. I heard Sco say that with another melodic instrument like piano you must be careful not to interfer. Larry Grenadier is my favourite bass player.

Drummer Jeff Ballard plays like Coltrane. Man it's not a sax or ... is it? You did it it's great music (Jive Coffee)
Good pianist
yes but a lot of ridiculous attitudes

Crazy performance!!!
Where's the double bass tho?
what Brad Mehldau can't do on the piano?
He can't play less notes
These guys are even better than Aerosmith!

don't know what to think about Peter here in this context wich i feel is not the good for him, phrases are short sounds not really affirmative.
Their jackets looked like they came straight from the drycleaners! No red wine or pizza topping stains on them. Nor cigarette butt burns in their shirts. Are they REAL jazz musicians? I think not.

This band is hinking behind the past. They're pathetic !!

Peter Bernstein's solo on Buddha Realm is definitely pathetic (the equivalent of Tommy Flannagan on Giant Steps) but nah, the band members themselves are great.
