I am running 12 TB on my gaming rig and have 70-80% filled I have games from the last 4 decades all saved to my rig. Then I have backups of everything so all said I have roughly 60TB of data most of which I will never use.
I have a 10tb hd thats 60% but most of my games from Steam are not even downloaded. I had to uninstall what i don't want to play yet just to save space. I found a Seagate 24tb hd but its still a little expensive.
@@Tomomoto9000bro don't use HDD's for game's. I'd say for videos or pictures sure. SSD's will improve loading times by x10, they really do for the games I play anyway. It was so annoying in eft waiting 2 minutes just for people's PC to load the game😡
back 4 to 5 months ago Drives got cheap . I snagged a 2 tb980 pro brand new for 80 bucks granted it was on sell but I could not pass that up .... I should have bought more than 1 is my only regret .
I always have 1 Hard drive, its just good for storing all sorts of stuff. i dont need work related stuff on my m.2´s thats space i can use for games `n stuff.

I just got a Samsung 990 Pro 4TB for $309 with next day delivery. I knew Jason would be upset with me because "it's not a gaming ssd", but I had to jump on it at that price. I do a bit of video editing as well, so I guess it wasn't a total waste :) Cheers
Is there any point in having an SSD that can read and write faster than the original? If so can you please explain what the benefits would be and how much more beneficial it is? Still looking into this correct me if im wrong. But i think as long as i meet the standard PS5 5500 read and write speed i should just get the best value for money. Making sure of course of the reputation of the SSD.
Why dont we just call it PCI now. Its 2024, the Express is a given at this point. Having to add the 'E' at the end just gums up the word. PCI just rolls off the tongue better.
I play a lot of games from a lot of genres. SSD all the way for FPS games, but I find that a good 7200 RPM hard drive is totally fine for 4X and Strategy games. I keep a lot of games installed, so,I still use both SSD and HDD in my computer. I have a 3 TB WD Black and I just replaced a 2 TB HDD with a new 4 TB Firecuda HDD. I have a 1 TB Samsung M.2 boot drive and my old 2.5" SATA SSD. I plan on picking up a 2 TB M.2 SSD before long. I mainly play single player games. I have a lot of games I've tried on both HDD and SDD and I didn't notice a difference while playing the game. Now, I've heard it matters more when playing multiplayer.
WD Black SN850X 4tb main drive lets goooo! Got an RX 7900XTX, 9 7900X, 64G of 6000 C30 RAM, 1000watt Seasonic, a 32" 4k 160Hz, a 32" 2k 165 Hz, Logitech G915 and G614, and a Klipsch THX sound system for the bumps when the wamens isn't home. So I think I'm good for a banger NVME. Light games, like Planet Crafters load in what seems like less than two seconds. Love the channel!
When buying NVME SSDs is it still important to buy from a reputable company? In the era of magnetic drives I tried to stick to better brands. Its such a pain if your storage craps out.
I doubt you'll see this but please do this for ps5 pro. Idk if the official specs for it has come out but some assume you can use the same ssd as base ps5 even tho the pro is a bit stronger than many realized once it was shipped to them. Base ps5 Face plates aren't compatible with pro and only found out by someone exposing it. I just dont wanna buy a ssd thats good for ps5 but it doesn't work with the pro because sony wants us to find out ourselves

"If this had two M.2's on it, I'd want to see a x8 connector, etc" I agree this is ideal, but for people who don't have a larger slot available, this only matters if you're using both drives at the same time. Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that as long as you only use one drive on the adapter at a time (such as when playing a game), x4 will work without performance loss. I've even seen a card with four M.2's on it.
One of the best performing SSDs at the moment is the Lexar NM790 and it's recommended by a major retailer I purchase my hardware. Great for dedicated gaming PCs.
So, I'm not really sure if I should get the CORSAIR MP600 PRO XT or something else. I'm going to be upgrading to am5, mainly for gaming, with Ryzen 7 7800x3d CPU, 32 or 64 GB of RAM DDR5, RTX 3070TI(Staying the same), and for motherboard, MEG X670E ACE. I found the Cardea "A440 PRO" 1TB for £122 and a 2TB "A440" (i.e. non-PRO) for £152. My guess is that the PRO version has DRAM and the non-PRO version does not (based on the price difference -- neither being marked down). You know what Amazon description accuracy is like! 😀

Size, it is small, no sata needed and no power cable needed cause it will sit directly to your motherboard. Cons: Very expensive, runs a bit hot cause of it's speed. Spend Wise, don't purchase something that you don't really need.
I have a few MX500s in my system, and they serve me well. I do plenty of reading, writing, and deleting large batches of photos, and they do perform better than cheaper ones I’ve used. I also use a single 4TB Crucial P3 NVME SSD for my travel gaming PC, and it’s plenty snappy, and runs smooth as eggs. I see no real need for anything faster.
I just want to say I found Jason and his videos in 2020 when building my first PC and he really helped me A LOT with my rig. His videos ALWAYS have great information!
Just bought a 1tb and 4tb samsung 990 pro. I thought I knew best that they were top of the line for just about everything, and while they seem to be for everything, except gaming, which is the one thing I do most... 😅
DRAM cache is really awesome. My (external!) harddrive has some and the only time it feels like a harddrive is when the cache is being flushed/written to the metal
Hi ! I might ask a dump question already answered, but is it a good two have two different SSD on your machine for dividing OS and Games ? Also if you are using VMs, which kind of SSD we should focus on ? Thank you for your video.
It is not bad at all but not strictly necessary either. What is almost never told in these PC build guides is that if the system has only one drive, to partition that drive is very wise, because if you would have to reinstall Windows (or install/upgrade to newer version) then you do not have to save the files (your games and possibly personal stuff, music, photos, etc.) from the other partition(s) elsewhere. Because of this personally I always use a small, separate drive for the OS only, for me it is more convenient setup.
Do your research if you are considering a pcie adapter for nmve cards. The x4 versions can fit in x16 slots if you dont have x4 slots on your board. x1 slot adapters will run at a limited speed but worth considering for extra storage - not gaming. Many boards do not have full bandwidth available to use all the pcie slots and nvme slots. My MSI board has a graphics card and 2 nvme cards installed. I can not use my second x16 slot or one of my x1 slots. They get disabled when the other slots are used. The motherboard manual will list your memory storage options.
Jason, can you please help me understand how a PCIe add in card (for an additional NVMe slot) affects the total PCI lanes/bandwidth on the PC? For example, I have a Ryzen 5700g, which has 20 PCIe 3.0 lanes. I have two NVMe drives and a full size graphics card (16 lanes). How does the PC divide up the lanes? If I insert an add-in card with a 3rd NVMe, will I reduce my bandwidth and slow down my drive or (worse) my graphics card? Thanks for any help you can provide. I have tried to research this and still don't understand....
Have already upgraded NVME a few times now. Current system has 3.75tb spread over 4 x NVME. Just 1TB now on Mechanical Drive. Had so many hard drives fail over the years have no hesitation going all NVME in the future.
Still using a Kingston 256 GB SATA SSD on one of my desktops even after I upgraded my Mobo and CPU. Still going strong, no reason to by a M2 NVME for that desktop yet.
In late September 2024, the Teamgroup MP44L SLC cache drive in 1TB capacity can be had for $57, a dollar less than its Gen 3 counterpart, the MP33. I'm going to run this in a Gen3 slot, at least for now, but it makes no sense to spend more for the slower drive given I might use it in a Gen4 slot at a later time.
Thanks for the comprehensive ssd video. My new laptop comes with a 4th gen 1TB SSD. Because of overheat + lack of space to add-on heatsink, I replace it with a rather cheap 3rd gen 2TB SSD & the laptop is much cooler now.
i had just one 2TB HDD for games and windows. I have got 1TB nvme for my main drive and made the 2TB as my G: games drive. but the loading of some games are slow. im guessing 2TB SSD would help, but im not sure which 2TB SATA/ NVME is best price to performance. anyone in similar situation, what did you do / choose. thanks 🙏🙏

Got me a sn850x 2tb for my local Walmart for ~$143 usd out the door the other day. Being in a small town if they have too much stock we will get local only sales, plus it helps when you know the cashier!
I'm that guy that will come and go on building PCs as prices lower ... 2016 .. I stopped cause they had 980 ti then a 1080 titan to .. think it was $1200 maybe more. But I was really skeptical about paying that much money for a video card... And when I do jump into the hobby, I like to buy the best of each piece. I want each piece to be the best they don't necessarily have to match. They just need to be the best of each piece. That's just the way I like to build ... I build my cars the same way ... But with PCs... They are starting to advance quickly... That I'm worried about starting a build getting the motherboard and CPU first . And by the time I get everything else I feel like my motherboard and CPU will be something I won't be happy with anymore because something better might have came out. So I keep not building because I can't get to a point where I could relax and go. This is the year to build it... It's moving to fast .. and motherboards are just really expensive... And I didn't want to settle with a gigabyte master ... When there's a higher tier .. Just like how I settled for the gigabyte 970 Xtreme gaming GPU in 2016 ish.. I felt like then I didn't have a good enough graphics card so I've been waiting and in the Bitcoin hit right after that. Aunt, nobody was going to be building the computer then that they liked for gaming without breaking the bank .. Memory and RAM are low prices right now .. But GPUs are still being made with hardly any video memory.. I would like to see dual channel memory on a video card just like how we have on a motherboard. I would also like to see 32 gigs of video memory on a video card... It's kind of where it should be anyways to be able to Future proof that thing for at least 3 years. They should be at least future proof for them for 3 years, but I noticed they're starting to release them almost every year now to every two years...
Just got a 2tb Lexar NM620 the other day, unlike before when i used to buy Lexar ssds for cheap to make older hdd pc's and laptops faster, these days they seem to be very reasonable budget products.
Very informative. Im looking for more storage to store games and you advising that the faster speeds or m.2 vs sata doesnt have a great margin when it comes to gaming performance is going to save me a lot of money haha

Your guides are usually legit Jason but you didn't mention the write speeds at all on this one. Also would love if you could talk about how different manufacturer matter for cards. I've decided on a 7900 GRE but I don't know if it really matter what brand I get. I understand warranty and cooling is important but in term of clock speeds, I can manually overclock even a OC fighter to red the Red DEvil speeds right?
I got a Crucial 2TB Gen4 for my build I did last week, and when I installed it, the sticker just kinda... fell off. Like the back of it was dried up and it was crunchy. So mine has no sticker. So far it hasn't had any heat issues, and all I'm using the little heatsink that came on my Gigabyte mobo. Just sucks that it voids the warranty. Cause I literally didn't take it off myself. It wasn't a choice I made.
I've been using Intel/Solidigm enterprise class & professional class SSD's (2.5 SATA & M.2 NVMe) since my first one over a decade ago. They have never let me down & even the oldest one is still running today at 100% health, after many years as a primary/boot drive & later a secondary drive on newer builds. I don't mind paying a bit more for extreme reliability & durability/longevity, because dealing with failed drives is a huge headache.

I've found that gen3 nvme drives mostly aren't even available anymore. When I find one of those it is more expensive than gen4 nvme. Also, anything smaller than 4TB seems to be a waste of m.2 socket. Those are best price/GB where I live. 🤷🏻♂️ Bigger drives usually have better endurance (TBW, terabytes written) ratings aswell. If you are doing write heavy workloads like video editing or transcoding, endurance starts to matter.

Is it just me or does anyone else only interested in the largest ps5 HD? There’s like 5 or 6 games that will max out the factory HD. Rebirth took 150GB itself, and I’m sure games will only continue to get bigger, so why waste time on a 1 TB? Grab the 4 TB and enjoy not having to delete everything for the next AAA title
Bought a 2nd drive last year. SAMSUNG 970 EVO Plus SSD 2TB - M.2 NVMe for $129. My 1TB NVMe was running out of space lol. 44C being actively used in a 70F room. Seems good.

So for Gaming both are overkill. SSD Speeds don't matter much for Gaming The 1TB Teamgroup MP44L would be a good choice for less. It's currently $58 right now.
I need a pair of good 4tb SSD's for my Alienware M16 R2, but im not sure which ones to get; like would a WD Black with heatsink work, or do i get something without a heatsink.

Serious question: I’ve had my desktop since 2018. Pretty much everything has been upgraded. CPU went from r5 2600 to r5 5600x. GPU from RTX 2060 to RX 6700XT. An original HDD for storage and 1 256GB SSD. BUT I kept adding on SSDs! First a 500GB SSD, then 1TB M.2 NVME… and ANOTHER 1TB NVME. Is there a limit or downside to having so many? I’ll probably build a new comp in a year or two, and don’t plan on adding more. Just really curious. Am I greatly reducing power efficiency or CPU output somehow?
And in case anyone asks, these are for games and a bunch of minor audio and video editing projects. I haven’t really run into any issues in particular. But also my PSU is pretty low and I have an older MSI x470 motherboard, the biggest issue I’ve run into is not enough power to USB slots.

I have a 1 TB Samsung M.2 boot drive and my old 2.5" SATA SSD. I plan on picking up a 2 TB M.2 SSD before long.
I mainly play single player games. I have a lot of games I've tried on both HDD and SDD and I didn't notice a difference while playing the game. Now, I've heard it matters more when playing multiplayer.

WD Black SN850X 4tb main drive lets goooo! Got an RX 7900XTX, 9 7900X, 64G of 6000 C30 RAM, 1000watt Seasonic, a 32" 4k 160Hz, a 32" 2k 165 Hz, Logitech G915 and G614, and a Klipsch THX sound system for the bumps when the wamens isn't home. So I think I'm good for a banger NVME. Light games, like Planet Crafters load in what seems like less than two seconds. Love the channel!

When buying NVME SSDs is it still important to buy from a reputable company? In the era of magnetic drives I tried to stick to better brands. Its such a pain if your storage craps out.
I doubt you'll see this but please do this for ps5 pro. Idk if the official specs for it has come out but some assume you can use the same ssd as base ps5 even tho the pro is a bit stronger than many realized once it was shipped to them. Base ps5 Face plates aren't compatible with pro and only found out by someone exposing it. I just dont wanna buy a ssd thats good for ps5 but it doesn't work with the pro because sony wants us to find out ourselves

I agree this is ideal, but for people who don't have a larger slot available, this only matters if you're using both drives at the same time. Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that as long as you only use one drive on the adapter at a time (such as when playing a game), x4 will work without performance loss. I've even seen a card with four M.2's on it.

One of the best performing SSDs at the moment is the Lexar NM790 and it's recommended by a major retailer I purchase my hardware. Great for dedicated gaming PCs.
So, I'm not really sure if I should get the CORSAIR MP600 PRO XT or something else. I'm going to be upgrading to am5, mainly for gaming, with Ryzen 7 7800x3d CPU, 32 or 64 GB of RAM DDR5, RTX 3070TI(Staying the same), and for motherboard, MEG X670E ACE. I'll be playing at 1440p 165 HZ. The MP600 PRO XT 2TB is around $250 CAD. I already have a MP600 M.2 2TB SSD.

Like based on this, and what I'm planning on upgrading to, will I see a performance loss with ultra or high quality settings in those types of games I listed, if I go for something else? Because rn, I can barely play at 60 fps on high settings. I even switched to using Microsoft Edge instead cz it was less stressful on the PC with games.

I found the Cardea "A440 PRO" 1TB for £122 and a 2TB "A440" (i.e. non-PRO) for £152. My guess is that the PRO version has DRAM and the non-PRO version does not (based on the price difference -- neither being marked down). You know what Amazon description accuracy is like! 😀

the 990 pro blasts everything compared to my other ssd which is less performant, even in gaming, I do not regret putting the price to it honestly :)

Pro's: Noticeable Speed difference if you were using a HDD before. Price? It is affordable. Price to performance is really worth it.
Cons: Can't tell any cons about this. This is really the sweet spot for budget gamers, budget pc builds and laptops.
M.2 NVME: Read Speed Depends on Generation.
Gen 3: 2,000 to 3,500 mbps
Gen 4: 4,000 to 7,500 mbps
Gen 5: 12,000 to 16,000 mbps
Pro's: Ultra fast read speed, top of the line. Size, it is small, no sata needed and no power cable needed cause it will sit directly to your motherboard.
Cons: Very expensive, runs a bit hot cause of it's speed.
Spend Wise, don't purchase something that you don't really need.
I have a few MX500s in my system, and they serve me well. I do plenty of reading, writing, and deleting large batches of photos, and they do perform better than cheaper ones I’ve used. I also use a single 4TB Crucial P3 NVME SSD for my travel gaming PC, and it’s plenty snappy, and runs smooth as eggs. I see no real need for anything faster.
I just want to say I found Jason and his videos in 2020 when building my first PC and he really helped me A LOT with my rig. His videos ALWAYS have great information!

Just bought a 1tb and 4tb samsung 990 pro. I thought I knew best that they were top of the line for just about everything, and while they seem to be for everything, except gaming, which is the one thing I do most... 😅
DRAM cache is really awesome. My (external!) harddrive has some and the only time it feels like a harddrive is when the cache is being flushed/written to the metal

These days you don't need to do that for regular gaming/use
It is not bad at all but not strictly necessary either. What is almost never told in these PC build guides is that if the system has only one drive, to partition that drive is very wise, because if you would have to reinstall Windows (or install/upgrade to newer version) then you do not have to save the files (your games and possibly personal stuff, music, photos, etc.) from the other partition(s) elsewhere.
Because of this personally I always use a small, separate drive for the OS only, for me it is more convenient setup.
Do your research if you are considering a pcie adapter for nmve cards. The x4 versions can fit in x16 slots if you dont have x4 slots on your board. x1 slot adapters will run at a limited speed but worth considering for extra storage - not gaming.
Many boards do not have full bandwidth available to use all the pcie slots and nvme slots. My MSI board has a graphics card and 2 nvme cards installed. I can not use my second x16 slot or one of my x1 slots. They get disabled when the other slots are used. The motherboard manual will list your memory storage options.

Jason, can you please help me understand how a PCIe add in card (for an additional NVMe slot) affects the total PCI lanes/bandwidth on the PC? For example, I have a Ryzen 5700g, which has 20 PCIe 3.0 lanes. I have two NVMe drives and a full size graphics card (16 lanes). How does the PC divide up the lanes? If I insert an add-in card with a 3rd NVMe, will I reduce my bandwidth and slow down my drive or (worse) my graphics card? Thanks for any help you can provide. I have tried to research this and still don't understand....
Have already upgraded NVME a few times now. Current system has 3.75tb spread over 4 x NVME. Just 1TB now on Mechanical Drive. Had so many hard drives fail over the years have no hesitation going all NVME in the future.
I went with a WD Black SN850X 2TB SSD M.2 2280 NVME PCI-E Gen4 for my new build. £139.98 or $177.37.
The most misleading thing about m.2 ssds is it's size. They look so big in the pictures, but they are barely bigger than your finger.

Still using a Kingston 256 GB SATA SSD on one of my desktops even after I upgraded my Mobo and CPU. Still going strong, no reason to by a M2 NVME for that desktop yet.
In late September 2024, the Teamgroup MP44L SLC cache drive in 1TB capacity can be had for $57, a dollar less than its Gen 3 counterpart, the MP33. I'm going to run this in a Gen3 slot, at least for now, but it makes no sense to spend more for the slower drive given I might use it in a Gen4 slot at a later time.

Thanks for the comprehensive ssd video. My new laptop comes with a 4th gen 1TB SSD. Because of overheat + lack of space to add-on heatsink, I replace it with a rather cheap 3rd gen 2TB SSD & the laptop is much cooler now.

When WD Black 4Tb hit ~$250 a little while ago, I picked one up. I don't think I'll need more internal storage for quite some time.
I saw a booger on the finger😮. Anyway I use 3 nvme 2T each, and I was running low on storage so I added a 8T spinner via usb-c. Works well.

Id get a cheat 480-512gb boot drive for apps and system files, and then a separate 1tb drive for nothing but games.
At the end of last summer i was able to pick up a 2tb 990 pro for 220 CAD (160 usd). Havent seen a better sale on it since.
i had just one 2TB HDD for games and windows. I have got 1TB nvme for my main drive and made the 2TB as my G: games drive. but the loading of some games are slow.
im guessing 2TB SSD would help, but im not sure which 2TB SATA/ NVME is best price to performance. anyone in similar situation, what did you do / choose. thanks 🙏🙏

Got me a sn850x 2tb for my local Walmart for ~$143 usd out the door the other day. Being in a small town if they have too much stock we will get local only sales, plus it helps when you know the cashier!

2016 .. I stopped cause they had 980 ti then a 1080 titan to .. think it was $1200 maybe more.
But I was really skeptical about paying that much money for a video card...
And when I do jump into the hobby, I like to buy the best of each piece. I want each piece to be the best they don't necessarily have to match. They just need to be the best of each piece. That's just the way I like to build ...

It's kind of where it should be anyways to be able to Future proof that thing for at least 3 years. They should be at least future proof for them for 3 years, but I noticed they're starting to release them almost every year now to every two years...
Just got a 2tb Lexar NM620 the other day, unlike before when i used to buy Lexar ssds for cheap to make older hdd pc's and laptops faster, these days they seem to be very reasonable budget products.

Also would love if you could talk about how different manufacturer matter for cards. I've decided on a 7900 GRE but I don't know if it really matter what brand I get. I understand warranty and cooling is important but in term of clock speeds, I can manually overclock even a OC fighter to red the Red DEvil speeds right?

I got a Crucial 2TB Gen4 for my build I did last week, and when I installed it, the sticker just kinda... fell off. Like the back of it was dried up and it was crunchy. So mine has no sticker. So far it hasn't had any heat issues, and all I'm using the little heatsink that came on my Gigabyte mobo. Just sucks that it voids the warranty. Cause I literally didn't take it off myself. It wasn't a choice I made.
I've been using Intel/Solidigm enterprise class & professional class SSD's (2.5 SATA & M.2 NVMe) since my first one over a decade ago. They have never let me down & even the oldest one is still running today at 100% health, after many years as a primary/boot drive & later a secondary drive on newer builds. I don't mind paying a bit more for extreme reliability & durability/longevity, because dealing with failed drives is a huge headache.

I've found that gen3 nvme drives mostly aren't even available anymore. When I find one of those it is more expensive than gen4 nvme.
Also, anything smaller than 4TB seems to be a waste of m.2 socket. Those are best price/GB where I live. 🤷🏻♂️
Bigger drives usually have better endurance (TBW, terabytes written) ratings aswell. If you are doing write heavy workloads like video editing or transcoding, endurance starts to matter.
4TB more TB/buck interesting :) Those silicon power are starting to pop up here in Europe now, so that's nice.

I've had a Samsung 850 500gig SSD since 2014 running at 6000mb.s.sec. Speeds from Samsung Magician.
It's almost as fast as my 980 Pro NVME.

Is it just me or does anyone else only interested in the largest ps5 HD? There’s like 5 or 6 games that will max out the factory HD. Rebirth took 150GB itself, and I’m sure games will only continue to get bigger, so why waste time on a 1 TB? Grab the 4 TB and enjoy not having to delete everything for the next AAA title

You don't need to buy two anymore, the only people I recommend that too are creators who have huge projects they want to keep separated.

Serious question: I’ve had my desktop since 2018. Pretty much everything has been upgraded. CPU went from r5 2600 to r5 5600x. GPU from RTX 2060 to RX 6700XT.
An original HDD for storage and 1 256GB SSD. BUT I kept adding on SSDs! First a 500GB SSD, then 1TB M.2 NVME… and ANOTHER 1TB NVME.
Is there a limit or downside to having so many?
I’ll probably build a new comp in a year or two, and don’t plan on adding more. Just really curious. Am I greatly reducing power efficiency or CPU output somehow?
And in case anyone asks, these are for games and a bunch of minor audio and video editing projects. I haven’t really run into any issues in particular. But also my PSU is pretty low and I have an older MSI x470 motherboard, the biggest issue I’ve run into is not enough power to USB slots.
Some boards will drop lanes if you populate certain spots. It is best to download the manual and check there.
