"Genuine leather" can refer to any type of leather. The subcategories of "genuine leather" are "full grain," "top grain," and "split." The reason that the term "genuine leather" is associated with low quality leather is because when companies make products from the cheap/weak lower splits, they can't call it top grain (top grain is also split leather, but it's an upper split, therefore good quality) and they definitely can't call it full grain, so they have a choice between "split leather" and "genuine leather," and these days they usually choose the latter because they think it sounds good. "Full grain" is leather that includes the outer surface of the hide, the part that hair/fur grew from when it was on the critter. It may be a layer cut off the top or it may be the entire hide thickness, which, in the case of cowhide, is quite thick and would only be used for something like shoe soles. "Top grain" is an upper split that doesn't include the outer surface, but it's still high enough to be in the grain area of the hide. "Split" overlaps "top grain," but it also includes the garbage splits in the lower non-grain areas of the hide. "Genuine" overlaps everything, but when the term is used by itself by manufacturers it nearly always refers to a crappy lower non-grain split. There's also "bonded leather," which is even worse than the lowest genuine leather split. It is like particle board or Spam, i.e., ground-up leather scraps that are pressed/formed/glued into a sheet of leather-like substance. It's commonly used for cheap furniture and cheap Bible covers.
that Starking was my first ever auto. I still have it and it still works almost 2 years later. I honestly think its a pretty solid watch for the money.
I think the inside is a Chinese cloned movement based on the Miyota 8125 with hacking and hi beat added. There's a very wide range of quality but in the best case, it might be good for a decade before you need to service it.

I've bought a couple of Starkings, one broke down pretty quick and the date wouldn't change properly, a couple of others worked ok but the dials looked a little flat - I think there's a lot of variability but sapphire is definitely nice
While the starking has sapphire and is decently built, their in-house Hi-beat movement is really quite sloppy. Mine works and keeps decent time, but as was stated in the video, the rotor is very loud and using the crown to set time or date feels a lot like using an unsynchronized manual gearbox that has been driven to hell and back. I do not think the watch will function for very long. Also, the watch repair channel did pull the movement apart and it was clearly poorly built in unclean environment, and I have heard many cases of them arriving DOA. Would not recommend getting one, even though it is a high-beat automatic with sapphire at a very low price.
I have had that same Starking model for a year now. I bought it for €40 on AliExpress, delivery from Spain in 8 days. The movement is in-house, but it is a copy of the Miyota 8215. Hi Ben, Thanks a lot for your content! Found you 2 days ago and I am binge watching your videos! I am "blessed" with a super thin wrist of 15,5 cm (6,1 in) ... finding an affordable watch that suits my wrist is hell. If you could do a video that would cover that issue I would love you till the end of the days.... Thanky you & keep up that great work!
I Actually bought a Skmei G-Shock-ish style watch some time ago. It really worked great for what i needed it for (the army). Yeah its cheap, but it has all you need in a digital watch. After all this time it still works.
I bought that Starking along with another $20 Chinese automatic watch, an Ochstin. Neither ran for more than a few months before stopping and never running again and neither were accurate. The Ochstin was off by 10 minutes every hour. On the other hand, I bought 3 of those Skmei watches to give to my grandkids a couple of years ago and they're all still running. Funny part of of it, is one of them sat at the bottom of their backyard pool for an entire weekend.
I’ve had the Starking am0184 for over a year and it still makes me happy. It is a high beat movement and if you take out the bracelet it is a strap monster.
Do a review of the Skmei 1358. $30 on Amazon US, and has altimeter, barometer, compass, thermometer, pacer, two alarms, dual time, Chrono, 100 hour countdown timer, and its strap is way better than Casios at this price point. Check it out! 😁 Casio needs to step their game up...
To set the time on that Skmei, you just need to press and hold the touch area. And yes, Invictas are Miyota-based, as well as most cheapest analogue Casios.
Can't help thinking you didn't give any of these watches a chance Ben. The Starking is very likely the best of the bunch and has had some very good reviews. I had the casio MQ-24 and used it for work for 5 or 6 years until the strap snapped. For a £6 watch I don't think you can knock it.
Yes, and I cannot really understand the point of the video because if you are a bit a watch fan, you know what they are and I am pretty sure you can get even worse if that is your aim... Was he expecting to find something out of this world? Something different to what clicked on? I mean, for real, what was the point?
@@Trex100 idk, I'm quite confused why he immediately disregarded it as rubbish since I rate it similarly (or higher than) than the Pagani he liked in his review.
I bought myself a Peugeot watch and am mostly happy with it for the price. It is a decent affordable I think, but somehow one of my arm hairs actually got under the crystal and I have no idea how... funny that.
I've got a one handed 24 hour dial, Slo Watch. Hours graduated in 15 minute divisions. Sits with midnight at the 12 position, noon at the 6 o'clock position. I like it.
Tbh, I tricked myself into buying a Swatch, because it was from a NASA/Space collection and I have the Casio DW5600NASA20... ... mate, it's bloody aweful the thing. Loud Quartz, doesn't line up, smudges and scratches easily, feels plastic fantastic. And it was like 90 bucks. I doubt it would be much of a challenge to offer a memewatch that's better value than that.
The movement inside the starking is something quite curious. It is basically slight modified DG2813, which is a derivative of the Myota 8205 movement design. However it is 28800 BPH and outer dimensions are the same as the ETA 2824. Even the hand pinions have the same dimensions as an ETA classic.
U where outwitted already by the wrapping and it just got worse from there. u have no clue whats in your hands. Love ur show thx 4 the work no down votes here.
hey ben, lately i've been bombarded with ads on my instagram by a watch brand called "Stührling" it claims its a microbrand and its swiss made watch but some people says its made in china. the watch does look pretty good in the pictures while some watches are a homage of Orient Kanno and Mido Ocean Star, specially the colours of the watch. it'll be great for a watch expert like you to take a look in that watch.
I have an anticlockwise watch I bought on amazon about two years ago. It's the only anticlockwise watch I could find, and it was about 20 USD. It's called the 'Time Fly Back'. It's alright looking, like a basic dress watch. The band is garbage but I've yet to put a decent band on it. She's a funky little watch and the anticlockwise feature turns heads when people look at it.
There were some stores here in Norway that sold anticlockwise wall clocks around 25 years ago. I think the point was that you could hang them in the bathroom and watch them through the mirror. Almost bought one because they were so weird, but they disappeared quickly, so probably not too popular.
same, mine's sapphire with the weird chinese movement. Unfortunately after a couple months it stopped and would only start if you bumped the case (sometimes with some force) and would stop again shortly. For some reason though it now hasn't stopped in months.
As someone who owns a Casio watch, I was thinking the same thing. If they replaced "Touch Here" with "Touch Watch", it would be something straight out of Casio's playbook.
I'm about to watch - and no doubt thoroughly enjoy - this video, but i just wanted to say first off, thank you for your support of Jody over at Just One More Watch. Was terrible what RUclips did to him, how they went about it, but i'm sure that he and the rest of the watch enthusiast community appreciated your support. You're awesome Ben, love your work!
9:29 they can get away with saying "genuine leather" because, in leather grading, "genuine leather" isn't a real term and, when used, is generally very VERY low quality leather. "Genuine Leather" is more often than not bogus because they can call basically anything leather adjacent "genuine leather"
I love your videos. Peugeot actually made very nice watches for an affordable price. I had one when I was in High School. It had the phases of the moon, and a couple other dials like a Chronograph.
He went in there totally prejudiced. What did he expect from watches costing a few pounds? He should have been looking for things to compliment at this price point. For instance the solid steel bracelet and clasp on one of the watches was real quality. I've seen less quality on quite expensive watches (pressed steel clasps for instance). Not everybody can afford to spend £400-20000 on a watch. I have amongst my small collection of watches a £112 casio in titanium, radio controlled, 6 alarms, stop watch, dial light, solar powered day/date, power reserve, 100m water resist etc from Amazon a few years ago. I wear it all the time on my right wrist and wear one of my bullheads on the other wrist, swapping them about. I don't know what his qualifications are to give him any creditability to make judgements (none I suspect, except a big squeaky irritating voice) I don't know why he bothered doing the review if all he wanted to do was rubbish them all (anybody got a bin bag?). Probably to 'big' himself up. I won't be watching any more of his reviews. Don't think I could stand his squeaky, scratchy voice again, for starters. Eeeh, eeeh, eeeh!😂
Yeah, a bit more of consideration about the price range and understanding that people can't always buy 1000$ watches or even 100-200$ watches would do his channel good
I think the weirdest Chinese watch I own is a Temeise... it is an actual full chronograph but instead of hands there are spinning coloured turbines, however a design oversight meant they forgot to put a reference on dial and turbines so good luck trying to actually understand the chrono turbines or the 24hr wheel. What else is weird it is bigger than an Invicta Bolt II Zeus Magnum, seriously super heavy and I got mine in the gold chrome and it looks like I got some rappers arm when I wear it. Its bigger than my Invicta Russian Diver or my TW Steels Chrono...
Now I'm sure that I repaired a Peugeot watch from the late 60s/early 70s and it had a very similar movement to Ingersolls of the time. Looks like they've managed to go downhill even from there
Fun video, thanks. A one hander can be fun but definitely NOT this one for sure. I've never owned a Starking, but I have heard people do enjoy them along with Cadisen. Was hoping to see the Spaghetti Scametti.
The busted up box for the Lancaster is part of the marketing. It's to make it seem like "Well, damn. That watch survived whatever happened to the box!" ;) lol
A great list of watches! 😜 We actually got , would be believe, a Peugeot Salt and Pepper set in İstanbul a few weeks ago!! Same pp Peugeot on the box!!
1st: read the instructions... I expected it to need at least a half second touch. Last: I'm just STUNNED that they would put an actual miyota guts IN a casio....
I've got a Skmei touch watch (same module, slightly different, more retro-looking case). Cost me about £12. I think it's a fun little watch, but you're right: the touch response is a bit finnicky, the hand logo is annoying (might try removing it with solvent) and the animation before displaying is pretty annoying. But hey, it looks retro and it is bright.
that single dial watch (24hr dial) is what I'm looking out for now, some timepiece that let me live time a little stress-free, I saw some more usable version online, of another maker, french... I'm also interested in the compass implication of such a dial.
I know this comment is super late to the party, but I HAVE to talk about that Skmei touch watch. The "button" is at the bottom of the screen, which is why it can sometimes seem unresponsive; you're just not tapping the correct spot (unless the watch is dead or really dirty). You set the time by holding down the "button" until it enters the time-setting mode. Then you can set all the values one at a time, holding the "button" whenever it's set correctly. It's not super intuitive, but once you figure out there's only one button, you can usually figure it out. Or just read the instructions that came with it, haha. Anyway, the reason I know all this is that I've used strikingly similar watches in the past. As in I'm almost 100% sure the watches I used have the exact same movement and display that this one does. They're sold by Dakota Watch Company, a chain of shopping mall kiosks in America that does watch repair services and also sells their own watches. The ones that (probably) use this movement and display are sold under their Fusion brand. They're little one-piece silicone/rubber watches sold in various colors, and the material covers the display. It looks like a rubber bracelet, but when you press the "button" (which is much more responsive, I think), the LED display shines through the material and shows the time. I'm not gonna act like they're revolutionary, but for $15 mall watches, I think they're neat. Probably better for kids than adults, like you said. I definitely think it's a better use of that movement and display than the Skmei; I see no reason to use cheap-ass metal when rubber or plastic would both look better and make more sense for the price.
The MQ-24 from Casio is great though, cheap as hell and very comfortable on wrist. As a curious fact it is known for being the watch Pope Francis uses. I like this video format a lot, I’d love to see more obscure/quirky watches from the depths of Amazon
Thanks for getting these "Dogs". However, I got Skmei, and Peugeot! The Skmei was heavier than one would expect and difficult to operate! It has different color LED lights. The Peugeot is a gold "President" style, with fluted bezel. (I liked it for the price); Another one I got was "ESS" "Minimal" Automatic for $20!! I do like the Dial and Lolly Pop Seconds Hand.

I bought a couple of Ochstins. Only wear them on very rare occasions but I think they look ok.
I’ve had the Starking am0184 for over a year and it still makes me happy. It is a high beat movement and if you take out the bracelet it is a strap monster.
It’s not high beat. That term is for 5hz movements.
@@Bob_Smith19 well 28800bph is better than most automatics in that price range..
@@Bob_Smith19 28800bph is 8hz
The Casio MQ-24 is great: very small (almost 34mm in diameter), extremely light, inexpensive and very precise.
The watch with 1 hand is actually neat once you figure it out. I have one made by "Luch". Its constantly on my wrist.
Instead of a Lancaster bomber you throw these heavy watches out of a Boeing 737 and hit people with it
To set the time on that Skmei, you just need to press and hold the touch area.
And yes, Invictas are Miyota-based, as well as most cheapest analogue Casios.
I couldn’t take my eyes off that beautiful polo mate, may I know what brand is it?
Humbly, I could definitely see this becoming a regular feature of the channel!
I have that Starking and rate it higher than a similarly priced Seiko 5. It’s certainly a budget watch but you get a lot of watch for not much money.
Ben seems to think that anything made in China is garbage.
@@Trex100 idk, I'm quite confused why he immediately disregarded it as rubbish since I rate it similarly (or higher than) than the Pagani he liked in his review.
I bought myself a Peugeot watch and am mostly happy with it for the price. It is a decent affordable I think, but somehow one of my arm hairs actually got under the crystal and I have no idea how... funny that.
I've given up keeping my Starking running. The power reserve is less than a day.
That quick Seiko burn. 😆
Man, I was searching for a new video of yours 10 minutes ago. And now I see you have posted a new video. You just made my day brother.
The one-hander looks intriguing. Do they do one with a GMT complication??
I've got a one handed 24 hour dial, Slo Watch. Hours graduated in 15 minute divisions. Sits with midnight at the 12 position, noon at the 6 o'clock position. I like it.
We want to see Spaghetti Scametti, but like make the joke that it's an actually good microbrand.
@@shiznuts
You are better off with the DW5600.
Had a couple of Swatches when I was a kid.
Noting to write home about.
Swatch the watch that saved the Swiss not much else
7:20 Lool that's like wearing a piece of a metal tube on a bracelet! 😂
Love ur show thx 4 the work no down votes here.
hey ben, lately i've been bombarded with ads on my instagram by a watch brand called "Stührling"
it claims its a microbrand and its swiss made watch but some people says its made in china.
the watch does look pretty good in the pictures while some watches are a homage of Orient Kanno and Mido Ocean Star, specially the colours of the watch.
it'll be great for a watch expert like you to take a look in that watch.
That Starking watch is fantastic, sapphire crystal and solid built quality. Rotor is loud as it’s a miyota movement.
Hey, I got myself a Luch One Hander and those are pretty cool
No mention of the fake pushers and dials on the Puegot?
Which brand is better: Spaghetti Scametti or Stoke Italia? Maybe do a head-to-head comparison.
I'm a simple man. I hear a Colin McRae reference in a video about watches, I press like.
"Who brought this to me, Colin Mcrae?"😂😂😂
was looking for this comment. xD
You know, I am wearing this same model of Starking while you were reviewing it. I am quite happy with it.
same, mine's sapphire with the weird chinese movement. Unfortunately after a couple months it stopped and would only start if you bumped the case (sometimes with some force) and would stop again shortly. For some reason though it now hasn't stopped in months.
Your the Hubnut (I really like his channel) of watch reviewers, even the Casio look weird, can't wait for another episode. Thanks 👍
Sorry, but for someone doting on Casio you don’t get to complain about another company putting instructional text all over the screen 😉
A very diverse selection of watches. That was fun.
I’ve had a Peugeot quartz for 25 years, a few batteries along the way and it’s still going strong. No small feat.
That one handed watch is actually a brand icon from Luch. Belarusian watch company. One handed watches are for miners to see time as a AM, PM
A LCD watch would serve the same function without the faffing about. A LED watch would be even better. 😉
Lancaster. For when you need a watch the approximate size and weight of a Grand Slam earthquake bomb
Question: Do you know what time it is?
10:02... (squinting)
Answer: 3 o'clock...plus or minus half an hour
He went in there totally prejudiced.
What did he expect from watches costing a few pounds?
He should have been looking for things to compliment at this price point.
For instance the solid steel bracelet and clasp on one of the watches was real quality. I've seen less quality on quite expensive watches
(pressed steel clasps for instance).
Not everybody can afford to spend
£400-20000 on a watch.
I don't know what his qualifications are to give him any creditability to make judgements (none I suspect, except a big squeaky irritating voice)
I don't know why he bothered doing the review if all he wanted to do was rubbish them all (anybody got a bin bag?). Probably to 'big' himself up.
I won't be watching any more of his reviews. Don't think I could stand his squeaky, scratchy voice again, for starters. Eeeh, eeeh, eeeh!😂
Yeah, a bit more of consideration about the price range and understanding that people can't always buy 1000$ watches or even 100-200$ watches would do his channel good
Seems like you're not aware that the Casio MQ-24 is the most popular watch in Japan.
Where is the leopard print Daytona? Disappointed.
Ben what strap is that you have on your Casio A700? Thanks
That little Casio is the same line as the watch the Pope wears. I got one at Target on sale for $8 a few years back. I love them.
Actually the watch with 1 hand is kind of a cool idea. I don't know why you gave it so much hate.
Now I'm sure that I repaired a Peugeot watch from the late 60s/early 70s and it had a very similar movement to Ingersolls of the time. Looks like they've managed to go downhill even from there
My wife went swimming with a gold Lip watch on and it stopped working. I took the back off and the movement was an Ingersoll.
@@targetglen they were ridiculous movements. Built ten times better than a timex and somehow still worse
That Colin McRae joke is so good and will go over so many people’s heads lol. Well done, sir.
That Starking has a special place in my heart
A great list of watches! 😜 We actually got , would be believe, a Peugeot Salt and Pepper set in İstanbul a few weeks ago!! Same pp Peugeot on the box!!
1st: read the instructions... I expected it to need at least a half second touch.
Last: I'm just STUNNED that they would put an actual miyota guts IN a casio....
The Lancaster box is a nod to the ejection system of a Eurofighter Typhoon.
Bloody hell mate you got me cracking ever since that Stoke Italia Joke, subscribed! Wonder if you ever reviewed those bizarre Russian aviator one's.
"Who brought this to me, Colin McRae?" 😂😂😂
6:01 Or Pennsylvania. Though since Hamilton is now based out of Switzerland, I’m not sure how much use the Amish have for wristwatches.
Ben is wrestling with a Skmei watch … hilarious 😂 great video ! You certainly have your way of reviewing those masterpieces time and again.
I have a Peugeot mechanical pocket watch from the 60s.
Ben, my eyes couldn’t help but noticing your casio A700wm-7a with new strap on ur wrist. Mind to share where u get the new strap?
Lancaster was pretty famous in Italy in the 90s with other brand like Sector, Lorenz and Lowell
I bought a dozen starking 2 yrs ago to see what's up. I returned most of em.
Please let me know where you bought the wooden-handled case back opening tool.
Think he said Etsy
"I accidentally started touching it and it turned itself on." - Every man ever.
Got the casio with orange markings as my work watch , 3yrs old battered and scratched too f..k i work in a warehouse (heavy lifting ).Great watch , only cost me 14 quid , and it shows me what time too go home .Love it too bits , and i have many watches in my collection some 500 pounds or more , but i just admire this plucky little watch . Love the vids , only just found you on the tube .Keep em coming .
Seems like you were not touching the right place. When you touch the bit that says "touch", it seemed to be fine. Looked like when you touch randomly on the screen, not where it says "touch", it doesn't respond.
Starking has gotten better, even using Seiko NH35/36 and Miyota 8217 automatic movements in some models along with their own automatic movements.
I have a cheap Starking and for the time I last wore it,it was fine.I also have a Russian mechanical one handed watch brand name is Luch.Reading it is an acquired skill but the instructions help............................................
Expert reviewing watches has seen the 24 hour watch for the first time.
Abraham-Louis Breguet turning in his grave and screaming: “watch expert!!!??”
Owned the Casio watch for a few years, didn't have a problem and it was very durable for what i put it through highly recommend that one.
That Casio, at the end, is a proper watch. Yes, it's absolutely basic, but it will be precise and it will last.
my favorite watch.. God tier.

That first one really stumped you with having to double tap to turn the screen on, rather than dozens of one taps.
