  • Hi everyone! In this video I take you through everything that I do on the first day of school! It is such a crazy, weird, and honestly, sad time in the world. I always try to find happiness, but at the same time, this is a hard time for so many and it has made an impact on me. I don't know what the school year will look like, but I am happy to talk you through everything I like to do on the first day of school from the morning I wake up to the moment I step foot in the classroom. The first day of school is one of my favorite days of the year and I am so excited to take you through what I am planning. Let me know something you really enjoy doing on the first day of school and we can talk in the comments! Sending you so much light and love.

One thing I did with my class when I was teaching college English is create a collaborative behavioral agreement with my class on the first day, and they seemed to love it. I put them into groups and gave them each a topic, such as cell phones, class discussions, late work, etc and had them create 1-3 policies within their groups, which they then shared with the whole class. And then we all had a discussion about what they thought was fair and if they thought anything should change, and once everything was approved I would type it up and publish it on our class page. I found that it was a great way of building community on the first day and it also allowed them to feel some sense of responsibility to the policies that we had created, which I think helped them monitor their own behavior throughout the semester. It was a great way to get them talking to one another and eliminated the awkwardness of the first day too, I think.

I did this my student teaching semester! We were starting a social justice lit circles unit and I wanted them to understand that we would be tackling critical topics and that there's a way to go about it sensitively and positively. I had students work with a partner to answer the question, "When talking about critical issues, what things are important to remember?" The students wrote their thoughts on a sticky note and stuck it up on the board. I compiled those and wrote them on a giant sticky note, which we called the "community agreement" and was up during the whole unit. Some of the "policies" were, "I will keep an open mind," "I will not expect one person to speak for a whole group of people" (because the class was predominantly white, aside from 3 students of color), and "I will call people in, not out." I think it really set the students up for deep, meaningful, intentional conversations!!

I have been in such a funk lately and have just really not felt like myself (between my summer college course, being very vocal about the social/political movements in our country, and the scariness of the pandemic, I think I'm just a little burnt out). I can't tell you how much simply watching your videos and hearing you speak so positively about education has helped me the past couple of days. I've watched you for a while now (you probably recognize my name because we've interacted a bit on Instagram, too) and your positivity and friendly personality have always been so empowering and motivating for me. Just to hear you acknowledge how difficult this time is without putting guilt or shame into that feeling is so refreshing because I've seen so many people try to discredit the way that a lot of us feel right now. I'm so anxious about what my student teaching will look like this coming school year, but hearing your passion for teaching shine so bright, even right now, has renewed my spirit a little. It will be okay even if things look different. Thank you, Britt. 💛

Love this video! I also do an “about me” presentation. Something else I like doing on day one for 7th grade ELA is writing “six-word stories” about the first day of school. For example, “I am having an amazing day,” “My first day of school rocks,” etc. We write them on sentence strips using different colored markers and display them in the classroom.
Another thing I enjoy doing is making name tents on card stock with their name in their favorite color and then they write or draw different things about them in each of the four corners: A talent or skill, an interest or hobby, their favorite school subject, and a favorite memory. I have them flip it over and write their name again so that it is on both sides and I can see it from anywhere in the room. Every day for a week or two, they grab their name tent and put it on their desk so that I not only learn their names, but I also start associating things that they like with their names. I also make one for myself.
Sorry this is so long, but one more thing to share... I always share with them my “teaching toolbox” that consists of metaphors using candy. I have it as a slideshow with pictures. Extra bubblegum because I will go the “extra” mile for them and I have a “bubbly” personality to make learning fun; M&Ms for “Mistakes” and “Motivation” (motivation after learning from our mistakes) and the different colors represent our diversity; Altoids (curiously strong) because I want them to be curious about the world and strong in their convictions; and lastly Lifesavers because I know what it’s like to “tread water” at that age and I hope my class can be a lifesaver for them when they are having a hard time. Then, after they agree to abide by all the expectations and procedures that I had already gone over using memes, I give them actual Lifesavers candy.
I can’t wait until everything goes back to normal and I can do all these activities (and much more) again!
P.S. Just signed up for BOTM. So excited!!

I watched a video of yours a while ago about the one word project and adapted it into something that fits more for what I do! I’m a camp counselor and one of my favorite activities to do with my campers is to make beaded bracelets with their word so they can add it to all of their other friendship bracelets! They all get a chance to talk to the rest of their cabin about their word and every night before bed we go around to each camper and ask them how they embodied their word for that day.

I teach kindergarten so it's a very different experience but! We always go on a tour of the school because we are an open campus and there are different buildings we have to go to...not sure how that's going to work this year but we are doing half in person and half virtual! This year I am going to do an all about me project on the first day with each kid and hang them on the wall. Since my kids have to wear masks I am going to ask parents to send me a picture of their kiddo without their mask that I will print out and hang next to their project on the wall! I'm super excited to go back this year and make the most of what we have!

Under normal circumstances, I like to encourage the kids to work together with competitive team Jenga. Split the kids between 2-3 (or 3-4 depending on class size) Jenga towers. Each team has to try to keep their tower going as long as possible while taking turns moving pieces. They got really into it last year.

Ms. Brittany, The last few months of my middle school experience was virtual and I will be starting high school in September. This summer, I was a part of a writing workshop with Eduardo Santiago from Idyllwild Arts and I wrote a short story I was so proud of, The Charms of the Land Far. I have been thinking about pursuing high school at Idyllwild Arts Academy and specialize in creative writing. However, it would be a complete change and I am not yet ready to move from New Jersey to California. Therefore, I still want to study my ninth grade year at my town’s public high school. I love the first week of an academic year. On the first day of eighth grade, we wrote a letter to our future self in English class and we read those letters soon after we graduated middle school. I am dying of excitement for the first day of school even if I have to learn at home through a computer screen. I read and write with such ardor. I am so excited for all of my assignments in English class. I often forget that we are living in the midst of a pandemic. I am so determined to simply do what I love. I love you

I love this! do you have any advice for the first day and behavioural problems? Ex: if you're introducing the one word project but a student decides to write something inappropriate?

Julia, I'm sure Britt will have some excellent advice for you! I actually teach 7th grade, and my biggest piece of advice is to go in with an open mind! You never know what subjects, clubs, et cetera can change your life! :) Absorb as much as you can and have fun!!! I hope you have an amazing 7th grade experience!

This is really random, but I just realized when Britney had her hair tucked behind her shoulders/back, it looked like she had short hair.... and i'm kinda loving it??! It made me think of Lucy Hale's hair. I feel like she could rock short hair. Love her hair and the way she looks now (obviously lol) but just wanted to share that.

I know this is really weird... but as a first year teacher, I’m not too worried about classroom design or set up or materials. But I am worried about dressing professional while still being able to be comfortable (I’m a sped teacher) especially in the winter! Help! I have no idea what shoes to buy...

I’ll be a first year teacher this August and *drumrolllllllll* I’ll be teaching 9th grade English!! 😍😍😍After watching this video I definitely want to do the one word project. Question though! 🤔How much time do you allow for each activity? For example, how long is your slideshow, is the about me page their warm-up as everyone comes in? I only get 45-50 mins with each group of students so I’m trying to figure out my time for activities. 😂 Thank youuuuu! 💛🧡💛

I have done all of this with a 60 minute class period and a 90 minute class period, so it really just depends on you and your students and how much time you want to spend on material. The one word project could be something you start and then carry on to the next class period for the warm up!

I even looked up your IG on google & it shows up when I’m not logged into my IG. The moment I click follow, it asked for me to log in, so I did & then it says “sorry, this page isn’t available. The link you followed may be broken, or the page may have been removed”😭😭😭
