I've met people her age who don't know who Nirvana are..... Plus, RATM were not a mainstream band in the 90's at all. I was there as a teenager and a big fan of RATM but most people my age had no idea who they were. I'm a musician, not a drummer 1st but I could listen to any track one time and then play a decent beat over it. You guys are fucking clueless haha
I mean, realistically she was 7 years old when this came out so, it's possible she was listening to primarily pop radio. You only really heard this in the 90s if you were listening to rock radio or actively seeking harder music. I doubt she was doing that at 7. Entirely possible she's never heard it. Also if you have heard this song, there are some very iconic drum parts in this that she entirely misses. You would have some idea of the main snare hits if you've heard this. Asking about your friend's ability to play a guitar part is not a good example. Guitar is a much more complicated situation. It's much easier for a drummer to just find a solid beat and pick up on standard verse chorus queues.

For reference she's a pop rock drummer, not a rock drummer. More likely to be influenced by and listened to Blink 182, Green Day, New Found Glory, Less than Jake kind of lot than RATM and other 90's Punk/Metal. Doesn't seem that unlikely she doesn't know the song.
Also your mate is entirely correct in saying it's like saying you've never heard of freak on a leash. If you're basing it purely of stream metrics Freak on a leash has similar views on spotify and more on RUclips than Bulls on Parade, so it'd be stranger to say you'd never heard Freak on a Leash at least now days, which i think is a pretty neat indicator of how a songs reach can be misinterpreted.

Every video they put out is the same thing. They have drummers play way harder songs first try. She is just playing a very basic drum pattern that basically any drummer would play. There is nothing hard about this song.
