As much as my ideal would have been the RAV4, the parking space I have in the Uk/ France (two countries I live in) are too small. So far my only regret with the chr is the boot size, but the fuel economy I’m having with it is so huge it doesn’t matter anymore! Would not trade my CH-R for anything!
I appreciate these kinds of reviews, as much as Dealers/Manufacturers I reckon woudn’t. Not that we should care much what they think. Here’s hoping for a CX-30 vs CX-5 or Sportage vs Seltos soon!
I had a C-HR 2019 and now bought a RAV4 GX 2022 model. C-HR is fancier inside and out with more features but 1.2 turbo didn't help much with the drive since liked a bit more power to start with. Space was another concern. RAV4 is 2.0L FWD and not as powerful as the 2.5L ones I have driven before. However now 2.5L is available only in higher grade models. On RAV4 kids can see the outside properly, unlike in the C-HR. For a family of 4 need some boot space so RAV4 is the better option.
Hey Tom, thanks for another thorough test. I have been running RAV4 GX AWD Hybrid on the fleet for 8 months now and having no problems to date. I like the GXL, but it’s too pricey for renters. Waited 5 months for delivery last year and the wait is longer this year for RAV4, Yaris Cross, Kluger and Camry Hybrids which we also run. I can however say its worth the wait for the RAV4, which is is a quality product with good resale.

I have owned a RAV4 Hybrid Cruiser AWD since September 2020 and my average combined consumption is 5.2 litres. I coast a lot before I brake and am always very gentle on the accelerator. I would consider the C-HR for two adults and lots of urban or country road driving, but for road trips the RAV4 Hybrid would definitely always be my first choice. I could not be happier with the RAV4 Hybrid, but do go for the Cruiser!
Its nice to hear it does good on the contry roads as well. I do 80% of my driving at 120km/h and about 35000km per year. I am considering the GX Hybrid.
I averaged 5.9 Litres per 100 klm in my 2021 GX fwd hybrid and that was a 1,250 klm round trip fully loaded mostly highway driving at 110 km/h so I’m pretty happy with the fuel economy
@@johnchapman2451 I have mine 5x months and 22000km on the odo. Over that period, my true average is 16.5km/ ( the car claims 17.3) Truly happy with that.
Put a Rav4 GXL hybrid on order her in NZ around a month ago - it should arrive in late January or early February. I know a lot of new competing models are coming for 2022 but it's hard to ignore the benefits of the hybrid system. I personally am drawn to it for the additional power as we live in rural NZ and drive on a lot of hills, especially if heading into Wellington. The better fuel economy is just a great bonus. As much as the new Sportage or Outlander look interesting, they just don't compete on value IMO, especially here in NZ where if you aren't going for the top spec models, you really do miss out.
This video would of been useful a month ago when I was seriously considering one of these. RAV4 is definitely best value for money you can get under $50,000 in my opinion. CH-R was nice but rear was very claustrophobic. Didn’t end up buying either of these though😂
We got new RAV4 petrol when it first launched at the beginning of 2020 and it is a great SUV but the one thing I would have done differently if I could at the time was to go for the hybrid for the extra power (when it first launched there was a 4-month wait on the hybrid)
Would be much more volatile if they allow the rear seats to be adjusted more against the boot size. Imagine having more room by just push back the seats when necessary.
Agree Tom the CHR has dynamic depth and finish I appreciate but can understand choosing the larger car if you need the room - in base 1.2 turbo form CHR a joy to drive so gets my vote 👍
I wouldn’t say get a chr because you’ll be waiting for the rav4. I’m in WA signed on the line in April for a chr Koba hybrid, not being built in Japan until July and I will not get it until end of sept so wouldn’t say it was the speediest option.

In other markets the CHR gets the 2.0 corrolla eng na and the in hybrid model it's 2.0 why do we in Aus miss out on the bigger eng instead we lumbered with 1.2 T that would pull the skin off a and require 95ron
Mate, I was supposed to have had my rav in august and now I’m pushed back to October. They should place more resources on ravs and stop sending the majority of them to other countries first!
For these family cars, are you able to show fitting a larger child seat? Eg the britax safensound bfirst? It’s always hard to tell otherwise. I was surprised to find this seat actually fits in my ISF.
I agree, i would love to see something like "does it fit a car seat" or "does a full-size pram fit in the boot" with cars like the RAV4 that are clearly aimed at families. P.S. We have a new RAV4 and yes it takes a Britex safe'n'sound just fine although I would like the rear doors to open wider but that is a minor pet-peev.

RAV4: 95 kW/t is quite acceptable using 4.8 L/100km (6 as tested) pushing 1745 kg thru a CVT 4wd C-HR: 62 kW/t is quite forgettable using 4.6 L/100km (5 as tested) pushing 1460 kg thru a CVT 2wd Where is that fuel going in the CH-R if it's not apparently making power and is considerably lighter? Weird.
The C-HR is using a little 1.2L engine matched to the hybrid drivetrain so it is going to be far less efficient at highway speeds which hurts the overall numbers. Or at least that is my guess.
@@CathodeRayNipplez given it has that older engine, and a larger, heavier wheel/tyre combo than the gen3 prius which weighs the same with thinner eco tyres, it’s actually good as that gen averages 5.1-5.4 real world (Fuelly.com) The new tech and efficiency in the rav4 is really leaps and bounds ahead of the chr given the weight disparity.

In Europe we get the CHR with a 2.0 liter hybrid engine. The same engine from the Lexus UX250. Its a quite powerful 180hp powertrain for the CHR.

This would have been a better test using the 2ltr Chr we have here in the uk. it produces 184bhp and is an absolute gem.

My C-HR having 377 liters trunk boot capacity , but is NOT having spare tyre, just emergency spare tyre repair set .

I think they would just fit as long as you don't have a giant golf bag! Not sure you'd get a trolley in as well though as the boot is tiny.
