Ben dont give up...depending on media...you can come up with great finishes on alot of things..... how about a stone washed hammer head??? Or knife blade...before a re-scaleing??? I know waiting sucks...but the out come can be spectacular... just saying...👍👍👍😎🙏🙏🙏
Rock tumbling is more of a set it and forget it sort of thing. It can yield some fantastic results but it does take som time. It could have a secondary use to deburr or derust parts with the right media.
I had a rock tumbler several years ago. I tumble glass. I picked up different colored bottles from alongside the road, smashed them, and tumbled them. My wife and grandkids loved the glass. They made jewelry and sun catchers.
Well, it looks like it works just fine. It's just not fast. I'm sure it will be fine for washers and screws. Great information on rock tumblers. Thanks, Ben have a great day
I had one of those years ago. I ended up giving it to my sister and now she has five or six of them! I didn't have the patience either😉 Thanks for sharing!
Hi Bin. Like many things that require an unexpected amount of time and mess cleanup, rock tumbling is definitely near the top of the list. However the rewards can be worth it. Patience is definitely a requirement. But hay, fortunately we can each enjoy whatever we choose. I enjoyed watching your journey of exploration. Keep your videos coming. You are a CHAMP.🤠
I did a bunch of rusty bolts, nuts & washers in my tumbler way back when using sand as the abrasive...My Grandmother who died when I was a kid was really into rocks and tumbling them, she had stuff from places all over she traveled, I think I have about 50 pounds of rocks that she tumbled, some really neat stuff.
My son-in-law has one of those tumblers…it runs 24-7 all the time, I guess he checks it about every week…he’s got some shiney stones but that’s about all. Fun video anyway Ben!
I tried this myself using interesting stones from the ground. What I found was that the harder stones would just grind up the softer ones and the ground up stones would become new abrasive that would keep the harder stones from polishing up nicely. I gave up on it, but I still have the tumbler. I was thinking about using it to clean old rusty hardware by putting some sand in with rusty stuff and letting it go for a while. Maybe someday I'll actually try it.
Good little machine Ben. I can’t see why it wouldn’t work as a de-rusting machine. Add sand blasting media and the rusty part. Same principle. Anyway great video mate.
Those things are handy Ben. I have an old one, not as nice as yours, but it works for cleaning up nuts and bolts. I have never tried it for polishing rocks though. Looks like yours works great but you are right, it take a LOT of patience. Best to you, Bill.
I feel you! I learned ya gotta run em all the way to max suggested time. Clean the snot out of them between steps and use the medium. Then the last step go even longer! I got one amazing batch, finally, that stayed shiny and put it away! Way too long for my ADHD brain. But fun to try
Great video Mr. Ben! I have always thought these were interesting and I get a big kick out of seeing before and after of anything really.. so I think is cool! Good stuff!!
Always wondered and wanted to try one of those…I have quite a collection of stones from gardening…their in a pile in one spot of the garden…I think you should try your rusty parts idea…ya never know…just set it and forget it…on a timer…🖖
Thanks Ben, I've wondered about buying one of these myself so was interested to see how you got on, I think I would also be impatient for the results, perhaps it would be better for things that just need finishing off (polishing) rather than transforming their shape ! I guess you mean an ultra-sonic cleaner, yeah, I've considered them too, a lot of people swear by them, particularly for small intricate items like Carbs and Clock mechanisms etc.

This IS neat! The old guys here that did this had a belt drive job that had several cans and used their rocks for bolo ties. We'll wait and see what you do! God Bless You, Buddy!
Thats funny that you posted this video because i was just thinking about picking up a rock tumbler over the last couple days. Keep at it as an idle hobby to check on every few days and youll probably end up with some really cool stones. Cheers ben!
Thanks Ben! Good to see you on your feet instead of relaxing in bed. I have always wondered what the deal is with those rock tumblers and as you opened it at the end I was like "What! That's days of spinning!" So much for fast gratification. You saved me from buying one, but I am curious if it's stout enough to put metal parts in it as you mentioned.
I have always wanted to see an honest review on one of those tumblers. I have the vibrating parts cleaner, it is awful. Im sure there is something it is good for, but for me it is loud and takes forever for even modest results. Thanks for sharing, this was fun to watch. Cheers
I had a similar vibration issue with my belt sander. I put it on a thick rubber mat and that hellp alot. I wonder if you tumbler would work to make "sea glass"?

I'll probably try more, Jim. Just not as a video.
Rock tumbling is more of a set it and forget it sort of thing. It can yield some fantastic results but it does take som time. It could have a secondary use to deburr or derust parts with the right media.
I may mess with it more. Just not making a video. Thanks Joe.

Now that is an interesting idea!
It is an amazing spectacle to see ordinary rocks turn into smooth attractive gems. 😃👍
It is. But I'll leave that to others.
Hello Ben it's always great to get new tools and equipment for the shop hope you get lots of use for it
Thanks Larry.
Rock tumbler! How fun! Yeah, I don't have the patience either. Thanks for another cool vid, Ben!
Thanks for watching!

I definitely want to try the nuts/bolts/sand thing.
Interesting machine, thanks for showing it to us, even though you don’t like it.
You bet, Larry.
Ben try tumbling them dry, instead of adding water... it should remove rust from small bolts and parts... thx for sharing.. take care and God Bless...
I will. Thanks Gary.

That media is EXACTLY what you said. Its meant to remove rust or coating from hardware sir. They're very handy
Good to know. Thanks!

Yes I'm going to try the hardware thing for sure.
As the wise old sage used to say, "Patience, Grasshopper!" This is a hobby of Patience. Looking good so far.
Thanks Bill
That little tumbler is magnificent! Can't wait to see the rocks when get them done one day......until then we wait 😂
Don't hold your breath. It'll be a while.

The good thing about a rock tumbler, you can put parts in it and tumble those. That's what I use mine for.
I might try that.

Yes, exactly. Fun to try. I'll add it to the collection of things I'll probably never use again (like my wood burning tool).
Good on you Ben👍
Thanks Scrounga!

I had one of those when I was 9. I guess I forgot how long it takes.
@@mrbenmall A while! Ran them 24/7.
Just set them and forget them for a few weeks and see what happens. Could be cool.
More experimenting needs to be done. But waiting around for a video is not a great idea. I'll do something on the side and post the results perhaps.

Long term results, but it looks like fun.
Thanks Dale.

Me too. Plus a previous commenter mentioned he tumbles broken glass. Might try that one day.
The Cowboy Hat would ease everything, thxs for sharing...
I keep forgetting to wear the cowboy hat. But I usually only wear it outside.
@@mrbenmall maybe if you wore it during the show, the seriousness of trying to whatever would dissipate some, have fun Ben and forget that other stuff
Always appreciate seeing new things from you Ben! I remember having one of these years ago and the noise from it running was enough to drive me crazy
Ah yes, the noise. I thought my new AC had broken. HA
Please do more!!
Thanks Shannon. Maybe later. On to other things for now.
You ROCK Ben!😊
haha. Thanks buddy.
Hey Ben!
What up?!
Up here in Oregon - it’s a beautiful evening, about 75 out. I’m out sitting on the deck. Nice to see you making videos.
@@ttfweb1 Yes, June; July and August are absolutely beautiful in Oregon. During the heat of the summer, I really miss living there.
My friend uses his to clean his brass for reloading.
That's a neat idea. I don't reload, but I get how that would work.
I have always wanted to see an honest review on one of those tumblers. I have the vibrating parts cleaner, it is awful. Im sure there is something it is good for, but for me it is loud and takes forever for even modest results. Thanks for sharing, this was fun to watch. Cheers
We're on the same page. Thanks.
I would love to know if you could use it for getting rid of rust from metal, maybe that could be another video.
Yes I think I might try that sometime.
I had a similar vibration issue with my belt sander. I put it on a thick rubber mat and that hellp alot. I wonder if you tumbler would work to make "sea glass"?
Yes someone else mentioned glass as an option. Might try that one day.
How about using on rusted sockets and parts?
I will try that sometime for sure.
What if you use a dremel? Nice video.
Yeah, that's probably next level stuff. But I like the idea.
Use a dremel to shape the stone first? Might be interesting.
True. Clever idea!
My dad loved his in his retirement. He searched beaches for material to tumble . Enjoy the videos
Thanks for letting me know not to buy one.
You're welcome.
