    You have a clear natural aptitude for teaching. Not only with teaching people techniques with art, but in general. You are an excellent communicator, you have a strong ability to make concepts understandable to your audience, and the way you present information makes it easy to retain.
    Whenever I have someone teaching me something, I generally have to ask them to explain it to me several times before it really "clicks", so to speak. However when you explain a concept or reasoning for something, I understand it immediately.
    I'd like to thank you for sharing not only your gift of art with us, but your gift for teaching as well.

    I just discovered your videos this morning, and I love them. I've tried to get into drawing a few times in my life, but I've always gotten frustrated and distracted by other things. Recently, though, I've resolved to start trying again. Vids like yours really keep me invested!
    A problem I keep running into, though, is my age. I'm 26 years old, with almost no skill whatsoever yet. Little better than stick-figure stuff on a *very* good day. I keep running into a wall where I start psyching myself out and telling myself that there's not much point, because I'm starting so "late". It sucks. Objectively, I know it doesn't matter! But the brain does weird things... Lol
    I know you've been drawing since you were a kid, but do you perhaps have any words of wisdom that might help a total beginner in my position feel better about getting into comic / manga art....?
    Thanks, Jazza. You rock.

    • @Jazza
      @Jazza  9 лет назад +94

      Go easy on yourself. If you enjoy the process you'll have motivation to progress faster, and there are many people who bloomed late and succeeded. To illustrate: elearninginfographics.com/wp-content/uploads/It%E2%80%99s-Never-Too-Late-to-Learn-Infographic-1000x2989.png
      Watch some videos on my motivation Playlist, i talk about this all quite a bit there, but main point is try and go easy on yourself, and enjoy the journey.
      Also thank you for your kind words and for watching my videos :)

      Draw with Jazza You, sir, are a fine human being. ^_^

    • @balls261
      @balls261 9 лет назад +29

      Caffeine Swordsman To add to Jazza's points, you've just got to find out what YOU would like to draw. I mean it all really depends on why you'd like to get back into drawing, would you like it to simply be a hobby or are you looking to make it a career? Regardless of either you're going to need to get the fundamentals down (channels like Jazza's are great for learning this) but after that you should begin to ask yourself how you'd like to draw if its just for your own enjoyment. When you look at someone what features pop out to you? Do you have a lot of artists whose work really inspires you? What kind of of art are you most interested in, drawing characters, scenery, or patterns and abstract designs? Of course you can dabble in all of them, and I highly recommend doing so because experimenting is a great way to learn what you like - and more importantly what you don't like.
      Don't misunderstand, I'm not saying developing your own style is everything, and if you don't enjoy doing a certain type of work that doesn't mean you should avoid it from then on as much as possible, but once you can enjoy portraying the world or your ideas a certain way you'll enjoy drawing overall. I suggest looking to other artists and really analyzing what makes their style THEIR style, y'know? How do they extenuate the eyes, what kind of atmosphere does their artwork have...questions like that help us get a footing in terms of what kind of stuff is the most enjoyable for us to make. After you've established that, then you can really go wild and try going into territory you haven't yet ventured, whether it was originally because you thought you weren't good enough or because it isn't entirely appealing to you.
      Basically what I'm rambling about is to get over this initial obstacle, you basically just need to find what you enjoy. It sounds like you like comic and manga, so obviously start there if its a passion of yours, however I must stress not to get hung up on what you think you "have to" do. If you want to start breaking conventions go ahead. Like I said experiment, but just make sure you know the basic 'rules' before doing so. I find that when I just draw without over-analyzing exactly what I want it to look like I end up having the most fun. That may sound contradictory to everything else I've just written but what I mean is while you should be looking to others for inspiration, don't compare yourself too much to others. If you're the kind of person who really needs to have a structured process in the work that you do, take a blank sheet and paper and set a very arbitrary goal for yourself. For example, I might think to myself "I'm going to try and do some old people in a sort of Will Terrel style" and then just draw and don't look back. Fill up multiple sheets of paper if you'd like. Afterwards you can pick and choose what you think worked and what didn't (that is, aspects of the drawings not the entire drawings themselves - for example if one comes out looking like crap but I like the way I drew the nose, take note of that and then move on.
      Self expression can be both the most painful and most rewarding process in the human brain. You already know this, but don't get too hung up on whether or not you're a good artist, or whether or not you've started 'too late'. Keep moving forward.
      Ira Glass has a fantastic quote on this phenomena, look up "The Gap by Ira Glass" on RUclips and he explains it all pretty well, and much more concisely than I ever could haha. Essentially when you begin making art in some medium you aren't familiar with, there is a gap between what you see in your head and what you can make with your hands. It's all about closing that gap with patience and persistence.
      Anyway, hope this wasn't too much of a wall of text. Good luck my friend!

    Right now I am designing a character's visual design, so this was very helpful to me. My character is an elf and often wears very muted greens. She is associated with nature and is naïve, so it's funny that you mention green as being a representation of that. Green definitely suits her, because throughout the story she is constantly learning and growing as person. Her experiences are the main focus of the plot.

    I create many characters with many designs. Some things that help me decide is if it is related to a fandom and the character's parent(s) are a character in the fandom, then you've got a foundation to work on. I do that and it helped reduce the need to pick out some colours.

    Jazza, I'm a new Photoshop artist and I've been trying to use your clipping mask process to do a good job in art. However, you know a lot more about the shortcuts and such, and I was wondering if you would do a beginners guide to Photoshop kinda thing. You could show all the keyboard shortcuts, inform what all the tools do and how to use them, etc.
    I think there are others that wouldn't mind a video like this. If you're one of those people like this comment to see if he will put in the polls.
    Thanks!!

    • @mnArqal93

      Joker is also about chaos, I guess breaking the rules of colour too works in the character's favour. I suspect Joker in a white/yellow outfit as opposed to his iconic outfit would work just as well with his character.

      Did you know that the colors for boys and girls used to be the opposite until the 1940s? Blue was seen as a calm color for little girls and pink, as a lighter form of red, a strong and bold color for boys. This is why we see Alice in Wonderland, Dorothy and several female Disney characters in the early movies wear blue dresses. So the idea that pink is feminine is a rather recent one.

The discover/research we do however, is a mix of pictures from the net and pictures we have to take by ourselves. Anyway thanks for the video and keep up the good work.

    Hi Jazza. Love the videos and especially those regarding your design process. My comment is on the stills/ images used for your videos and using final images/concepts. I enjoy watching the design process and feel that this could be enhanced having not already seen the final outcome used in the videos image/still. It's really interesting going through the discovery and experimentation process during your videos and would love having the final concept or design as a surprise perhaps. Regardless love your stuff and your videos. Cheers!

It's incredible how much effort and time you put into this kinda videos, but it reeeaally pays off. Seriously, thank you, I didn't draw for a whole month because I was so friggin demotivated, and now I already have my pencil back in my hand :)

    For an easy way to remember the color communication thing just remember that all of these are based on human psychology.
    Red = Blood (Intense)
    Green = Plants (Growing)
    Blue = Water (Tranquility)
    It is easier (at least for me) to remember what they are associated with rather than what they communicate XD

    How can you say the last one is the best?? To my eyes each one is perfect, I definitely could not chose one. And the same goes to my own drawings, I make the first sketch and I am happy with it. It is so hard to decide between your concepts!!!

    The Swashbuckler and Boomer. A two person superhero team. One with the ability to telekinetically control precious metals and the other with the ability of super strength and to atomically charge an object with explosive kinetic energy. Basically Hazel from Heroes of Olympus and Bandit from X men.
