man the functionality part really just opened my eyes since I was only thinking abt like how stylish and cool some characters look like so thanks a lot, sir, this really helped!
Thank you, Margo Martindale for this tutorial. Ive been struggling with my character outfit for a while and i think I still need to go back to the drawing board for him. Thank you also for that mood board site. Ill be using that in the future.
Thank you so much Mom ! I would love a video about clothing floating, showing impact, wall crumbling and other stuff, but it’s okay if you don’t because you’re probably going to forget about this comment anyway if you even read this, but you have helped so much !
I really appreciate you talking about being mindful of culture over pure aesthetic when researching for characters from different cultures, definitely something that needs to be talked about more when it comes to character design!
i saw someone call you Martino, and honestly they could not be more right you're like the tutorial artist version of Martina/NerdForge and you both have inspired me so much it's insane-
Thanks a bunch, been struggling with clothing these days. There's this middleground between fancy and basic, that I need to hit with some of my characters, and it's really hard. Great video, Mario, take care!
Thanks, Marsupial! Lots of excellent points. It's good to see a video, because a lot of this I just understood in the back of my head, and it's really nice to see it all laid out professionally. I have more words now for things! Now I can just throw this video at people and it'll make sense to them. All I would add is just observe! Pay attention to why people dress a certain way in real life, but also in media. Clothes send messages, and we subconsciously can feel those messages, without having words for it. When designing, you have to force yourself to pay attention to those messages and think about it. We all need thinking lessons sometimes. It seems like many people understand a lot about art, but it's all subconscious. They don't realize just how much information is in their brains, and it's hard to put it on paper.
Thanks, Marven! I love how we all collectively thought it would be hilarious if we continue to mispronounce and get your name wrong since you were mad about it. Seriously though, your vids are awesome Marcel. I think I can speak on behalf of everyone to say thank you, that they're really helpful and your editing is seriously some of the best I've ever seen.
My gosh does James make the perfect videos that are exactly what I need to make the art that I'm still procrastinating on making and instead watching "tutorials" instead of actually drawing because moving my arms a little bit to make art seems too exhausting apparently according to my brain when I can play video games no problem, no effort at all, obviously.
Brainstorming is a really important skill to have as an artist! I really hope for more videos regarding exploration of ideas like this one. Thanks Mario!
If in doubt, include some sea-mine visual elements. Everything from Cloud to the Doom Slayer has used this for good reason. Once you know about the sea mine thing, you'll see it all over the place. Taking random visually compelling objects and slapping elements of their visual design into your outfits is really effective at mixing things up. See also: Reze's dynamite apron.
I don't know how but your videos make the lecture feel like a hype anime fight. That's the best way to describe my experience lol. Love your videos sir !
I recommend reading fashionpedia if anyone is strugling with clothes or looking for resources. The book is basically a fashion dictionary like what are different kinds of cuffs, sleves, colars, what are the names, eras and so on. There are other fashion and industry stuff related in the book. My only slight problem is the book doesn't teach you what look what you're going for. Like for example preppy fashion, boho chic and etc.
When i make character designs, i usually always have something to base it off of. i start with something i like and i tinker with it over a long time. ive been tinkering with some characters for years.
I really needed this tutorial as I have begun creating my characters, and I wanted a Victorian steampunk mixed with fantasy look. I'll definitely be using Milanote
When I was younger and designed outfits for my characters, I just things together because they looked nice, but as time passed whenever I do outfits I find references and research. I also tak a good look and get a feel for it. Sometimes I scrap ideas because it didn't feel right, like it wasn't good enough for my character.
The characters in the story im working on start out pretty blank slate, but I have a point in the story where they get to pick costumes and uniforms and im so excited for when i get to use thise scenes as ways to express the character-fashion design process!!!!!
The most underrated tip people dont use in character design is looking at fashion magazines. I know people think "oh fashion magazines are pretentious and only stroke rich people's ego" because most of them refer to Vogue but Vogue aint the only fashion magazine around. I usually look through the catalogue of Non-No (Japanese male magazine) and GQ (international male magazine) for male-centric designs and for female designs in Fruits (Japanese magazine), Vogue that is not American-based (I swear the overseas versions of Vogue are far superior than the American one, especially in France and China), and Ginka. Also if you're broke like me, you dont have to buy these magazines. More often than not, their front covers we can see on the internet can already give you ideas on what pieces to use for your character designs. Don't be afraid to explore some art ideas.
This has always been my biggest struggle in characters designs, I never know how to design their clothes outside of simple hoodies or sometimes a suit, it’s just hard lmao
Also when it comes to the functional aspect, it's important to question oneself about the purpose and feats of what a character is wearing. Thinking in terms of function pretty much. Examples : protection for legs -> greaves melee weapon that cuts -> sword, knife protection for chest -> chestplate Then you can question yourself about some more functional details, like, for instance, hybrid protection against both bullets and melee weapon attacks; the kind of armor that would fit for this functional aspect. Etc.
I LOVE your videos so much! Also, your humour is FANTASTIC, and I laugh so hard while watching your videos. I'm so grateful that u didn't give up and just started your English channel. I hope u are doing well there! U have all of my support here! Also, thank u so much for that recommendation. It will help me a lot while designing my OC or even in studying. I am new at this, and your films save me whenever I lack in smth! Have a good day, and be safe.
