  • Instead of posting season three, episode five of The Good Values Podcast, I decided to launch a new project, 'The Dirty Corner'.
This is an idea I've had for a while. After discussing the concept with several people and getting mostly positive responses, here it is, my account of what I consider to be the worst Fine Art school in the world!
I intend on sharing stories from my time at art school in the hopes of warning others against the suffering I, and several others faced while trying to improve upon our favourite thing to do, Art!
I hope you enjoy it and find some of the stories useful.
    Thanks.

I watched your latest Patreon video and it was so interesting and impressive. I'm gobsmacked that the tutors on your degree course didn't celebrate your achievement as an independent, self-taught artist and really get behind your ambition and talent. While I could give the Dean's wife the benefit of the doubt about suggesting you skip the Foundation stage, on the basis that she wanted to fast track you onto a degree course as a mature student, that would not normally be a good thing, in my opinion. People usually develop exponentially on Art Foundation courses, although it clearly depends on the course. You get to try many things to identify where your strengths lie. I would say that I learned most during my Foundation year. After that, I kind of got on with it. The teaching was sporadic. It seems like the Dean's wife was less concerned with what would be best for you than with filling up places on the degree programme. However, if other students seemed to have benefited little from their Foundation year, then maybe it was for the best. Highly significant that the your institution's Foundation programme was deemed dispensable by the Dean's wife: an oblique comment on its quality, methinks.

Thank you for watching my latest Patreon video. It was an important one for me, as I'm sure you can imagine!
Yes, the time we all wasted at art school would have been better spent exploring different materials and practices. It wouldn't have hurt to have been given any lectures on art history, but there we are, that's what was missing in my opinion.
I just feel bad for the students who went through the system not realising how large the gaps are in their knowledge and experience. It doesn't feel fair at all.

      @@simonsez_artwork It's a travesty.

@@simonsez_artwork I hope that creating this series has helped you process the experience, or at least, aspects of it. It sounds like daylight robbery and students deserve better. Nothing can fix that now, but it can at least serve as a motivating factor. I feel that something should be done about the faculty because they are way too lightweight to be running a degree programme. However, they could be indicative of a bigger problem on UK's fine art degree courses.

Exactly, no one cared that the guy was upset about his stuff being stolen. Maybe it was threatening to the thief??? The fear of being rumbled? Moreover, why wasn't it similarly concerning that people burned crude oil in the studios? Or that people's studio spaces were graffitied? Or that students' work was damaged?

Thank you. As always, your comments highlight the issue perfectly and I couldn't have said it better myself!
