Lovely environment for your work!
Thank you! We'll have to visit it when you are next in town, they make great food
Tom uses stick figures now instead of 3D models.
Love the painting: the palette and how responsively you have painted it! I am just catching up with your videos now.
Thank you. Sorry for the late response, I have been stretched thin lately and haven't been able to keep on top of basic things like comments! I hope you're well and hope you have a lovely Christmas and New year. Xx
@@simonsez_artwork I feel terrible that I haven't been able to keep up with your videos these past weeks! I gathered you were really busy, which is a good thing, isn't it? I have loved your oil painting videos. I think oil paint is a really special medium, which is why it has stood the test of time, literally! So versatile, resilient to the passage of time and effect of he elements, and vibrant in its pigments. Whatever painterly talent is in a person, oil paint will bring it out like nothing else because it has all the textures, all the moods. I can see you have taken to it naturally and move across its attributes quite freely. Unfortunately, it isn't so convenient to use and gets pretty expensive. There is a level of commitment required which is not available to everyone because of sharing living spaces with others, or living in an apartment/bedsit, or due to budget. Still a powerful medium of expression though, which can make efforts to get round these problems worthwhile. I hope you and your family have a lovely Christmas and are all powered up for an incredible 2025! xx
Big thank you for these Simon Educational entertaining and every single one was an encouragement to get up and do something. 👍
Thanks Mike! Sorry for the late reply. I have been unreasonably busy lately. Hope you're well and hope you and your household have a lovely Christmas and New year! See you soon
Loving every video!!
Very beautiful outcome. The discussion of the process and your calm voice makes this enjoyable to watch. Thank you. I think the 100 day challenge is a great plan for myself also, creating in the moment instead of wasting time thinking and planning, but just get something going every day and enjoy the process.
beautiful ❤
How I solved my problem with oil paint.. Simple... egg tempura and acrylic.
Love this! I don't think there is anything wrong with using linseed if that suits you. I just have never found it useful. The smell of turps or whie spirit is awful though and I can't really use it an apartment.
Thanx for posting but please do skip the irritating repetitive 80's video game music. It is distracting from what you're explaining and turning the volume down means one cannot hear what you're explaining.
Thank you for your comment. This series will all feature music throughout the videos, but there are about 370 other videos on my channel where that isn't the case. Enjoy!
Very good!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🇧🇷🇧🇷👍
Thank you!
Love this piece!

Nice plein air painting, but please get rid of that awful music. Hard to listen to the commentary with it droning on too.
I have good news and bad news for you! Bad news: this series (100 day art challenge) will have music behind the commentary. Good news: there is about 370 videos on my channel which aren't part of the series and don't have music throughout the video. Thanks for your comment.

Great to see you out in the field! Cracking spot. I think you did a fine job capturing that scene 👏🏻
Thanks Rich. I'm never satisfied with my plein air painting, but I suppose that's a good thing!
So sorry to hear you have been ill but glad you were seen so promptly. This is when you know you are really in the flow, when whatever the circumstances, you find a way to make some art. I hope you are feeling better.
Thank you. Yes, they were great and treated me as well as they could considering the circumstances. I'm still recovering, but I've got work to do so no time for rest!
Love the outcome. It is very baroque! Also makes me think of Alphonse Mucha!
That is high praise! Thanks
Totally agree with your commentary. It reminds me of what Francis Bacon said about the difference between painting and illustration. There's another level of engagement when drawing from life; it's an expérience of 'what is' and does not attempt to describe.
There is one more coming up tomorrow!

OMG! Stop the music!!!
I'm sorry it bothers you so much!
@@simonsez_artwork The ear can be pulled in two different directions as it is here. We have a person speaking and in the background,we hear music. Especially when the music is something we are familiar with, the ear focuses on it to the detriment of the speaker’s message. When the human ear hears both music and speech at the same time, it can pay proper attention to neither.
Trust me... The talk is interesting enough. So, the music is redundant and, frankly, annoying!
I understand. Well, I have good news and bad news! The bad news is that this series will have music playing along with the commentary. The good news is, I'm pretty certain every other video on this channel doesn't have music playing except for the intro and outro. So it's only this series. I appreciate you letting me know and I know how it feels to dislike something like that. It can ruin a video for me, so I will give your comment some thought. Thanks
I have a friend who flits from one endeavor to another. She has tried learning the cello, drawing and Italian. After making just the minimum effort, she dropped them all. She wanted results that bring her praise. When she realized that such results come only after, dare I say the word, effort she became disenchanted. I speak from experience. Before I decided to begin painting, the only brush I'd ever used had Oral-B stamped on it. My efforts were uninspired, but like a child, I was delighted by my pathetic productions. When I drew a cup lit from the side showing shading that gave the cup 3 dimensional volume,, I ran to everyone I knew and declared ''see what I have done'' like a three year old. I suppose that's understandable, but I was a 63 year old man and I was blessed with friends, who were encouraging and supportive. I pressed on. That was 15 years ago. I paint and draw now for my own pleasure. Some admired pieces I give away. And I've had a couple of well received exhibitions. The big surprise is that the final product isn't what gives me the most pleasure. It's the doing. Being so focused and absorbed so that everything but the work before me disappears. Knowing how to draw or even just loving to draw is a pastime that is always available and it doesn't require other people to be present. It kept me sane all through the Covid lockdown. Funny, I still show my work to friends and say ''see what I have done’'.
That's a very interesting comment, thank you!
Brilliant Interview!

Hi Simon. Absolutely well done for having a go 10 out of 10 mate. I thought about 10 mins into your painting it was going well. Atmospheric background were the mountains hit the sky was very good imo. Wet on wet I always find difficult. I thought your end painting was more than acceptable as a start. Bloody well done 👍
@@mikedavies313 that's very kind of you to say, thanks, Mike! Although, it gets worse before it gets better! Tomorrow's video is a stinker, but it's part of the challenge and my pathway through to where I am now, so enjoy!
Hi! I had a set like like this from the Works, I hadn't seen them anywhere else. It's a really good idea to start with something on the paper or canvas. A white ground can be oppressive. There's such dirty chaotic weather in Wales right now, your picture really captures the atmosphere. I agree about the brainstorming-rationalising process. I have had an intense couple of months and gave up trying to get any artwork done, but I arrived in Wales yesterday. I'm here for a little while and will then go on to Vienna.
@@francafila19 ah, we'll have to try to catch up whilst you're here! Yes, I am making the third piece today and I will post the video tomorrow, so I can't procrastinate any longer! I look forward to seeing you while your here if you have the time. Thanks
Why not show us the model so that we can see more clearly where you're going? It's lovely but not that enlightening. But thank you.
That's a fair comment. There is an explanation, this video is from 2 years ago and since then I have periodically discussed the idea of publishing the image of the model along with the video with the model. I have, this week, just secured permission from 2 models to publish the images with the video. How this will work on RUclips, I'm not sure. It will definitely be posted on Patreon and I will probably post a pixelated version on RUclips for regular viewers. Thank you for your comment and apologies for the long-winded response!

Lovely to see scenes of your local area and have it collaged with music, painting, and music. I liked the colours in your painting. I'm afraid, I just haven't had much time to myself to make art this summer. I have done stuff here and there, but nothing I would post, as it wouldn't seem meaningful on its own. Seen a couple of exhibitions though and will do a blog post soon, once I get a load of work out of the way. Your abstract landscape made me think of one of them, by Monique Frydman. She did a whole series of monotypes during lockdown, and these were collected in a book in the exhibition. It would have been easy not to do it and miss the opportunity, but she did it and it stands a s a unique testimony. I think Frydman works from external references in some way, but her work is abstract. It's that impressionist/expressionist dichotomy with abstraction I think; the artist needs to identify where they are on that spectrum. I love the discovery in your painting, and the colour in the end result. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Gwen! She is a great abstract artist so that is a compliment! Don't worry, it is hard to make art when life demands other things from you. I look forward to seeing what you make when you get the time and can inject the meaning you want into your art. Thank you as always, you are greatly appreciated
Enjoyed your video. Thanks

Just catching up with some of your other podcasts. Really enjoyed this, thank you. It's great to listen to film conversations. I love Jacques Tati too, very poetic. I think this episode is one that a friend of mine mentioned, Deborah Kelty. She has jus done a degree in media stuff and film-making at Llandrillo. She had heard of you in reference to this podcast. I have known Deborah since she was a small child and caught up with her family the last time I was in Wales. I thought it was really positive that people in the arts in Wales get connected in all kinds of ways.
@@francafila19 that's lovely to hear! I remember being quite excited to talk to Andy. He's a really nice guy and a talented chap. I will be uploading more episodes soon. Thank you
Very few people are awarded Firsts in Fine Art. In my experience, they tend to be earmarked for a First quite early on, so it is extremely doubtful your friend's outcome would have been different. Moreover, if she had been heading for a First, the faculty would have made sure she got a great exhibition space, and that everything was set up correctly. She would have been among the 'most favoured', as it were. I still think she was right to appeal, as an objection to the clear failure of the institute to protect and showcase her work, but their minds were already made up on that one. With regard to the degree show, I remember we all had to prepare our space ourselves, with the help of students from the lower years if necessary. Sometimes, the space was where the artist had been working and it meant coats of paint, new partitions, screens and so on. It was quite intense. Some students didn't have such great work (in my opinion), but they were really creative in how they presented it, which I think is a skill in itself, and they had a lot of freedom to apply it. Maybe that doesn't happen so much any more for various reasons. Anyway, you are building a great portfolio now with all your activities and if you wanted to do a Master's further up the line, you will be ready for it and you will then see what a silver lining it was that you didn't do it straight after a BA. You will also choose the institute and programme very carefully and go in with your eyes open.
I agree, although there were several students who received a first for what appeared to be professional boot licking! If anyone should get a first it should have been students like her who's work was really impressive and transformed the space. Obviously the space she was given made that difficult and the platform being broken aswell as her ipod and speakers not being maintained as requested were all factors in devaluing her efforts. She definitely deserved better. So did many others.
@@simonsez_artwork Yes, I agree, and Firsts should be awarded through objective grading, looking at a student's learning and growth across the three years. The weighting is always greatest on the final year, and that seems reasonable. What's unreasonable in Fine Art is that people tend to be the beloved from beginning, and not always based on talent or any objective criteria. I agree it's horrendous what happened to you and your friend, and I am glad you challenged the decisions. My comment was more that we question these things because we imagine that these are instances of unfairness in an otherwise fair system of assessment. I would say that the basis of academic awards in the arts is already skewed from the beginning, and so it becomes nearly impossible to use the system against itself to achieve a fair outcome. What helped on my MA was the verbal feedback and the use of a clear rubric for all the assignments, including the final project. I also contacted my personal tutor with some queries and I was satisfied with her answers. It contributed to my learning.
@@simonsez_artwork Not just licking boots either at the risk of being crude. It is likely that the faculty came through art education at a time when there were unsackable staff who disappeared to the pub around the corner every afternoon for a drink with their favourites, and these favourites tended to get the Firsts and the recommendation letters for funding and further study. There was still some evidence of that around when I did my BA, but what was more common was for conceptual work to be rewarded way above painting and draughtsmanship. I believe this is just a foible of art education, in that it intersects with the art and art education industries, where money and trends dominate. Nevertheless, I do think that your account of events at your institute reveals one of the worst set of student experiences I have ever heard. It's an absolute travesty there isn't a thorough investigation and staff reshuffle.
Thank you for this series and well done for getting your case heard. What baffles me is that the faculty didn't want to showcase all the student outcomes in the best possible light as a reflection of the Department and Institute as a whole. Reporters may have gone to the show, or bloggers, and they don't write about the work of individuals being poor; they comment on an overall impression, for example, a poor exhibition environment, not having sound, exhibits not working as they should, or being damaged, stuff stuck in corridors... This reflects on the institute not the artist. You can put small enough paintings and 2D in corridors, but rarely audio-visual, sculpture, installations, or large pieces. If I am in a gallery and a piece isn't functioning as it should, or is stuck somewhere that doesn't allow it to be viewed properly, I automatically think it is a curation and gallery issue, never the fault of the artist.
It's funny you should say that. I do have a story (with evidence) about journalists and the degree show, but I'll put it in the bonus patreon video along with some other short stories!
Also, thank you for watching, supporting and commenting. It means a lot to me
@@simonsez_artwork It has also been very healing for me to hear another person's experience. It hasn't been talked about enough. Mostly, students who have a bad art college experience are so damaged by it, they just close the chapter. Others feel it's their fault, many rationalise or just hold onto the good bits. I think young adults straight from school and more mature students suffer in different ways. I know what it is to have been a teenager going to art college and so it was formative for life. Ironically, I would say the life part was more positive than the professional part. These are the years when you need to build a bridge between your hopes and dreams and reality. I just think I have had to wrestle with those gaps ever since. There just wasn't enough teaching or mentoring on the degree programme. I think mature students tend to be more disappointed, aside from the financial hit, but miss out more on the education side, especially if it's their first experience of higher education. However, I have known a few mature Fine Art students, including yourself, who have not let that deter them and they have pursued a career in the arts in some way, regardless. I compare with other university study I have done, which actually changed my life, changed me as a person. These programmes were so well put together and the faculty were at the top of their game. Maybe I was just lucky, but all academic programmes should be this, even in visual arts.
@@simonsez_artwork I'm sure that it will be enlightening to see write-ups from visitors and the press!
Thank you! I only wish that I could be a fly on the wall for the experience of other students in schools across the country. My hope is that the efforts we made have had some sort of lasting affect and students who are there now are doing their part to push back against the bad behaviour.

OMG, sorry, just responding to this as I listen... referring students to the module handbook when anyone asks anything... Nowhere, just nowhere, does anyone think this is good teaching practice. This call certainly wasn't a waste of time though. No one who spoke up was 100% happy. Even Bully 1, and that person mainly seemed to be happy because of the interdisciplinary scope, not the course per se, or else excused it because of COVID. Everyone also flagged the discrepancy between the workshops listed on paper and what was really experienced on the ground. So sad that the young student finally resorted to that stock idea of under-served communities, which is 'Got to be grateful what we get', like you have to just accept whatever crumbs are thrown at you if you can't go and study in a more established, more overtly 'prestigious' place. The whole idea of external moderation is to eliminate these discrepancies, so that the degrees awarded have some meaning, irrespective of where they are achieved.
Yes the module handbook was a sore point for a few of us. I'm so glad that you also picked up on how absurd it was to feel lucky to have the university! I had several weird interactions with that student and sadly she sided with bully #1 by the end of the course. It was tiring trying to push back against the positive feedback, but I'm glad that I did it and that I recorded it!
@@simonsez_artwork Yes, well done for your courage and initiative throughout all of this, even by doing the series.
And the crawling too, from the Bully, trying to get brownie points for bigging up the course and University. It's quite blatant. If the external examiner was really trouble-shooting, he would have picked that up. The truth is, these examiners are not looking for trouble. They want to keep hassle to a minimum. Moreover, even though I think the uneven communication is a huge deal, especially during the pandemic when it was a risk to come into the studios, so many excuses can be made about how it was a crisis that tutors weren't prepared for.
That was great for me to share with anyone watching. I found a few students to be quite sycophantic so the fact that a small amount of this was captured in the meeting was strangely validating!
Thank you for sharing this. I have never met an external examiner or been around that external supervision process, so in my experience, it has always been a closed-door one. It seems that one way your institution implements a student feedback loop is through a meeting with the external examiner. On paper, this sounds marvellous of course and potentially, it is. However, this is evidence of how that can pan out in practice, with gaslighting and so on. Just ridiculous how one student undermines the lived experience of another just because it differs from their own, which is what you said anyway. You said that things were uneven. Bully No. 1 jumped in and dismissed your experience, instead of echoing what you said that experiences varied. I definitely gained a better understanding of the role of the external examiner through this video though. It's all about the overview, and what can be done to improve highlighted issues for next time. If individuals are treated unfairly, it is unlikely to be flagged in just this one visit. It would have to recur over years in obvious patterns with enough people for that to happen. In that sense, the external examiner's visit is for the most part a formality. External supervision is still important, but for individuals who feel they have been treated unfairly, it looks like there is no option other than an independent appeal, up against the institution, finding your own defence. No one will come to save you from within the institution, which is completely backwards. The institution should be there for you as the student not for the tutors.
Thanks for your thoughtful response. I just wonder what would have happened if any of my fellow complainants were at this meeting with me. I was supported by two students who had their own issues with the course. That was a relief because I felt terrible being so negative every time I spoke!
@@simonsez_artwork Actually, you didn't come across as negative. You sounded like someone with carefully considered and legitimate concerns. The baton was being extended to students for their honest feedback and it seemed like that this was mostly achieved and in a respectful and civilised way. Maybe others with things to add were more disillusioned or intimidated, and so they chose not to speak up? I believe that it was a constructive meeting. In subsequent years, if these issues are not addressed, things could heat up for the people in charge. It might not be as radical as is required, but even this level of accountability is important. On the face of it at least, it's on record that the degree programme did not meet students' expectations, communication was erratic and uneven, and the reality on the ground did not live up to the hype on paper.
@gwenlewis4443 thank you for saying that. It was difficult for me to edit this video for a few reasons, first it was a lot to type, second it was hard to hear and remember the sentences as they were said and third, it was unpleasant to relive the experience of feeling outnumbered and disliked. I'm glad that it seemed civilised because it felt emotionally chaotic!
It's clearly an issue that the only way to gain any power against institutions is to create a big enough storm, when just saying something about it to a person in charge should be enough. However, when the storm is created, you end up being caught in it too. It can follow you. The art world is so small. In other words, when the sh*t hits the fan, everyone gets a spot on them. Those faculty staff ain't moving. They have so little else in life. They will do anything when their backs are against the wall. Their mortgages and pensions depend on it.. You were able to walk away, start a RUclips channel, exhibit, become a videographer, do commissions, you can take your career in many different directions. You may have lost out, but only through the deficits of those who were meant to deliver a service to you,. They had no more power over you than that. I think what you have done in creating this series will have more impact, and it's just the beginning. It's cannier too. No one can demand it be taken down, it mentions no names, and it can be generalised to other art institutions. If the university had cared, there would have been a 'restructuring' of the faculty. for the subsequent year. People do what they are confident they can get away with. For some reason, the staff involved appeared to feel immune. You might not be 100% sure of the basis of that immunity. It must have been pretty solid for them to get away with not acting in the face of racism and bullying that caused a student to leave and a complaint about sexual assault. The journey might not be the one you packed for, but you will ride into the sun.
Thank you Gwen, you're always so generous and kind! I am looking forward to finishing this series and drawing a line under all of the grief, but I am glad it's out there. Onwards and upwards!
Did your university request your anonymised feedback on a regular basis?
They did towards the end of the course, but quite a few of us were too disillusioned with the school. We didn't have the energy to take the opportunity to relay information. In hindsight, I wish we had.
Yes, I get that. Too little too late and it becomes a joke after all you witnessed.
Nice one Simon keep on doing what ya doing
@@mikedavies313 thanks Mike. I'm glad you like the video
