    A note from Lawrence:
This is my second dialogue with filmmaker extraordinaire and force of nature, Werner Herzog. But after I read his amazing new memoire Every Man for Himself, and God Against All, which takes its name for the German title of his 1974 film The Enigma of Kasper Hauser, I had to have Werner back.
I have known Werner for almost 20 years. We met when I was a judge at Sundance and we gave his film Grizzly Man an award, and Werner, his wife Lena, and I have been fast friends ever since. He even allowed me to be a villain in the movie Salt and Fire, which we shot in Bolivia with Michael Shannon and Veronica Ferres. So, after all of this time I thought I really had a good handle on him. I was wrong.
So many people ask me about Werner, who has a reputation of being larger than life, and I always say what a kind, generous, pleasant man he is. All of that is true, but after reading his new autobiography, I realize that he IS larger than life!!
If it weren’t Werner, I would never believe all of the amazing stories and events. That he is still alive is alone almost a miracle. For this dialogue I decided that rather than following his story chronologically, I would read him various quotes from the book and ask him to elaborate. What followed was a rollicking conversation that is one of the most amazing I have recorded to date, and that I think presents Werner has perhaps few other interviews ever had. In the process we covered territory from science to philosophy to history to religion and beyond. And in the end, what arose most clearly from our discussion was that while he is a world famous filmmaker, what he really is at heart, is a poet. And we are all lucky to have him. Enjoy!

Werner Herzog is my favourite person in this world, he is genuinely the most incredible man alive, I’ve rewatched all his film’s dozens of times each, reread all his novels and watched and rewatched all his interviews, lectures, public appearances, on set footage, audio commentaries, read all the novels he has recommended such as the Geogics and The Peregrine, all his interview compilation novels, I haven’t seen much archival stuff, but am nonetheless such a big fan of Werner Herzog, he is my biggest inspiration, I’d do anything to talk about existence, history, and cinema with him.

I still wonder whether Werner Herzog trends towards meaning while being innately sociopathic, or if he is innately empathic in a world that attempts to trend him towards being a sociopath.
Perhaps that is the paradox? Idk.

We need better batteries, batteries with lipid concentration gradient cells (a lot like biological cells, but only the properties we need to store energy, control thermals, and rebuild oxidized damage of (ion pumps, ion pores) through molecular replication and "food" sources (amino acids and chemical energy). The food can be external components (chemical cocktails within cartridges) that feed the system, allowing it to maintain itself. We can move past the crystalline structures, (nature didn't evolve them for many reasons [they don't expand to deal with heat, they are not as fluidic and mailable as lipids, you can't replace broken regions because the rigidity, they have energy limits]). A mitochondria analogue could power mechanical properties of proteins that can operate the electrical concentration gradients (ion pores and ion pumps), and the electrical concentration gradients diffuse power to devices. To increase the thermal stability we could create highly folded hydrophobic molecules (designer lipids) that have many thermal energy states that they can expand into (expansion allows spatial redistribution of energy before the inertia breaks molecular bonds) while maintaining the concentration gradient as they expand. As the lipid substrate expands they come into contact with heat sinks that diffuse kinetic energy in order to reduce the temperature. When a ion pump becomes oxidized, this oxidized ion pump or ion pore can be repelled by a high positively charge inner sleave that has a hydrophobic outer sleave embedding within the lipid bilayer, while allowing it positive charge density to push out oxidized ion pumps, or receive new ion pumps are not oxidized, pushing oxidized ion pumps out of the lipid substrate to be broken down by other processes, or for the oxidation to be reversed. This is not only important for energy, but also robotics, where instead of current electrical motors, we can use strong artificial muscles that intermediate gears, joints, or any other mechanical system with far more torque and force and responsiveness. Think about it, we can do this, it's the way forward. Also, the nay sayers will end up going this direction in a few years anyways, because they AI systems will be smart enough to say "Look, your missing the greener grass on the other side", so why not just start researching and building these batteries now to save time.
