Eric's prodigious analytical mind is clearly at times completely dumbfounded by the deep abstract thinking of Herzog. Fascinating to see him out of his comfort zone.
It definitely looks like introverted intuition at work, if you'll at least admit that sort of typological concept to the discussion. I don't know that Eric was out of his comfort zone, but I think instead he had a few of his own assertions knocked back and realized that he couldn't lean on existing conclusions (ie, "You're the unreliable narrator..." "No no no, I'm the one who makes sense!" 13:56). People like Eric are extremely adept at grasping the abstract, but they just tend to grab it outside of the conversation, when they're on their own and their subconscious has had enough time to fit the pieces together. But they go further by then locating the finished puzzle within a larger picture, and that, I would submit, is the ability from which someone like Eric draws greatest strength.

He's a living testament to the power of having total confidence in one's convictions, and of course, he is irreproducible, a singularity, a gift to humanity.

Around 32:00 Herzog claiming that he's very prudent and considerate of others, he lists a litany of people who never got seriously injured: his actors and production people who were very close to him. Is anyone going to mention the deaths and injuries of the local indigenous people who participated in the film? It's quite egregious that he would say essentially "no one got hurt in my 70 movies", completely ignoring all the actual people who got hurt, but who happened to be not his friends or actors, when he's probably the director with whom most people got hurt in movies....

Wow. One of the most important people of our time. How you managed this is beyond me. Many comments are critical, largely because this is their first exposure to Herzog. For those people I’d suggest studying this mans work, from the beginning. Without context, be wary of ascribing an identity or diagnosing pathologies. He’s way ahead of you, and is quite aware of the human as a collection of pathologies. To define him by any of them is already wrong, by default. He has integrated them. Rather than being blindly driven by any of humanities myriad of pathologies, he skillfully uses them each as they serve a purpose or expose a deep truth. It can seem clunky, or obvious here, but that should be a cue to look deeper. Not cast away. A fully integrated human cannot be defined in a RUclips comment. And to try is to be wrong by default, or at the least, likely just a reflection of the pathology you see in yourself. I’m very glad to see this man on your podcast. And I’d encourage those who’s first exposure to Herzog is this, to be wary of defining the man at all. There is incredible value in starting from the beginning. You’ll learn a lot.
I don't think it's one or the other. This dichotomy between art and science is so cliche. Art isn't un-analytical. Science isn't un-abstract, or even un-gestural. Weinstein is quite capable of abstract thinking, and Herzog is quite capable of analytical thinking.

Herzog is a genius. I love his point on technological utopias. I think the main question he is asking with his films is what will happen to explorers and heroes in a post modern world. Humanity was always kind of expanding. The USA are the land of the free for a reason. But now this has stopped. To which new frontier the poor will migrate now? Aguirre was looking for the Eldorado in Peru. Will we all become like the grizzly man who got eaten by a meat machine without a soul?
So far I don't feel hugely.. Rooted deeply in the relevance of these talks? But I'm super into seeing these insights I wouldn't otherwise normally encounter. Let's keep going Eric, I'm ready for whatever's next.

Herzog is one of my favorite film makers/artists. I enjoyed the documentary about the making of Fitzcarraldo called Burden of Dreams a lil more than Fitzcarraldo.
Yes at approx 37 min....Eric if you are going to insult your guest like that please at the very least keep a long shot on your guest so the audience is not aware of how big a dick you're being... just an fyi....I'm sure it was critically important but unless we understand the critical nature of it you might wanna hold off on Chess with Friends until after the interview....😋😁

I agree with Werner Herzog's admonition to travel on foot - that you see the world differently when you travel on foot. I don't do it long distance because of the time it takes, but it is often how I experience cities that I visit around the world, and it is a completely different experience than traveling on a tour bus. But for long distance I suggest traveling by bicycle. I once traveled a bit over a thousand miles on a recumbent, unsupported, and I got a completely different perspective than when I have traveled by car. But traveling on back roads by car is also a valuable experience, and very different from traveling by interstate. Each of these ways of traveling has its own advantages and disadvantages, but certainly they provide different perspectives and insights, and traveling on less traveled roads exposes one to experiences - raw material for thought - that most people never get.
@@SeanPlunkett013 - yes. I particularly remember the sounds and smells of nature when riding on back roads. Nowadays one might get much the same with an e-bike, but a traditional motorcycle would be too loud and smelly to allow the same perspective.
Hey Eric, I thought I would try and help you if you are interested. Please never check your phone. It looks very unprofessional. I would suggest airplane mode and a watch to keep time with. Style points for a pocket watch. The content was good. There were several things that I learned. The portal theme is really cool. I like the goal; to show people deep subjects, concepts or art to motivate them into becoming involved. You are almost like a serpent tempting with fruit that gives knowledge but comes with a burden. I wish you success.

I saw that, too, but assumed he was just scrolling up his notes to the next question he was going to ask. I don't think Eric would actually disregard his guest as simply as you are implying he would.
Bravo! From the audacity of his vision, through his pugnacity of conviction, and all the way down to the humility of his compassion, Herzog gets me right in the gut.
I liked the last interview. I've got a minor gripe about this one though. Let's see if anyone considers it reasonable. I think the numerous instances where Werner had to correct your assumptions about him shows you not only had a bad read on him from the start, but weren't able to adapt to the new information, at least not as quickly as your otherwise mercurial mind would typically serve you. Those assumptions were: he's a risk taker, and he's a bit mad, both aspects of him which he repeatedly denied, giving good reasons. It was a bit frustrating seeing how you didn't go with the flow but kept coming back to those erroneous assumptions.
Herzog is a contrarian. My guess is the creative part of him gives him license to be interesting by contradiction - I doubt many people come off well in interviewing him. Personally I'm ok with an interviewer not being well researched as long as their questions are interesting.

Nowhere near enough people highlighting the importance of reading fiction and the classics as Herzog has done here. More and more find myself surrounded by people who discredit such works in favour of pure science/non-fiction reading in the blind pursuit of truth. As Herzog noted, understanding the truth doesn't necessarily mean one understands the reality of things.

What the hell was so important that you would overtly use your phone while Werner Herzog explains, in a way only he could, how after reading a pamphlet at Carnac, he was driven to live like a neolithic human to prove early humans, not ancient aliens, moved and erected the monolith stones located at the site....which in turn gave him the confidence to move a 300 ton ship over a mountain. That's Herzog GOLD right there ... didn't seem your style to appear so unengaged to someone so legendary being his legendary self...so what gives?
I am not a movie or TV person, so I had never heard of him. I watched a few episodes of the "Mandalorian" because a friend forced me (until he believed me that I was not interested), but the only thing that stuck out was Herzogs character. His charisma instantly had me, like unreal. So even in such a small meaningless side-role in a rather boring TV series, he was able to capture my attention. Now I want to watch his movies...
I agree you should have your interview notes on a piece of paper or written down. Because that way the interviewee can see that you're looking at a list or notes that you've made for yourself. but if you put your notes on your phone your interviewee can't know that and he might just assume that you're not even looking at notes and that you're not paying attention.
Herzog is the best, but watching Weinstein grasp at keeping things in any semblance of a track is funny. With Herzog, you just grab his shirttails and hang on going down the rabbit hole.
Everyone *needs* to watch Herzog's "Encounters at the End of the World". It is a documentary in the Antarctic McMurdo station concerning the human condition (in my opinion). Best doco ever made.

One of the greatest filmmakers to ever walk the earth, right under his predecessors: Bergman, Fellini, Truffaut etc. Herzog is from another time, where filmmakers were not only entertainers but were thinkers, the Platos and Nietzcha's of the "modern times".

This is why people like Sam Harris are smart for not including video. People get way too distracted by the visuals, especially if they aren't interesting. You'll pay much closer attention and really appreciate the content more if you aren't devoting some of your brain power to watching stuff that doesn't matter.

Werner's comments about walking coincide with an author whom I heard speak within the past few years (I wish I could remember the name of the author, as I was listening to a radio show). That is: one of the things that virtually all geniuses had in common was putting one foot in front of the other, walking, for long distances. Whether it was Aristotle, Mozart, Einstein, or any other number of intellectually amazing people, a great many of them walked. A lot.
I found myself wishing for more back and forth with E.W. Clearly a difficult task with Herzog. Possibly Eric still finding his podcast "voice" early in The Portal, and or the dynamics of an audience? Interesting content nonetheless.

I agree with Werner Herzog's admonition to travel on foot - that you see the world differently when you travel on foot. I don't do it long distance because of the time it takes, but it is often how I experience cities that I visit around the world, and it is a completely different experience than traveling on a tour bus.
But for long distance I suggest traveling by bicycle. I once traveled a bit over a thousand miles on a recumbent, unsupported, and I got a completely different perspective than when I have traveled by car.
But traveling on back roads by car is also a valuable experience, and very different from traveling by interstate.
Each of these ways of traveling has its own advantages and disadvantages, but certainly they provide different perspectives and insights, and traveling on less traveled roads exposes one to experiences - raw material for thought - that most people never get.

Please never check your phone. It looks very unprofessional. I would suggest airplane mode and a watch to keep time with. Style points for a pocket watch.
The content was good. There were several things that I learned.
The portal theme is really cool. I like the goal; to show people deep subjects, concepts or art to motivate them into becoming involved. You are almost like a serpent tempting with fruit that gives knowledge but comes with a burden.

Bravo! From the audacity of his vision, through his pugnacity of conviction, and all the way down to the humility of his compassion, Herzog gets me right in the gut.
I liked the last interview. I've got a minor gripe about this one though. Let's see if anyone considers it reasonable.
I think the numerous instances where Werner had to correct your assumptions about him shows you not only had a bad read on him from the start, but weren't able to adapt to the new information, at least not as quickly as your otherwise mercurial mind would typically serve you. Those assumptions were: he's a risk taker, and he's a bit mad, both aspects of him which he repeatedly denied, giving good reasons. It was a bit frustrating seeing how you didn't go with the flow but kept coming back to those erroneous assumptions.

Herzog is a contrarian. My guess is the creative part of him gives him license to be interesting by contradiction - I doubt many people come off well in interviewing him. Personally I'm ok with an interviewer not being well researched as long as their questions are interesting.

Nowhere near enough people highlighting the importance of reading fiction and the classics as Herzog has done here. More and more find myself surrounded by people who discredit such works in favour of pure science/non-fiction reading in the blind pursuit of truth. As Herzog noted, understanding the truth doesn't necessarily mean one understands the reality of things.

What the hell was so important that you would overtly use your phone while Werner Herzog explains, in a way only he could, how after reading a pamphlet at Carnac, he was driven to live like a neolithic human to prove early humans, not ancient aliens, moved and erected the monolith stones located at the site....which in turn gave him the confidence to move a 300 ton ship over a mountain. That's Herzog GOLD right there ... didn't seem your style to appear so unengaged to someone so legendary being his legendary self...so what gives?
I am not a movie or TV person, so I had never heard of him. I watched a few episodes of the "Mandalorian" because a friend forced me (until he believed me that I was not interested), but the only thing that stuck out was Herzogs character. His charisma instantly had me, like unreal. So even in such a small meaningless side-role in a rather boring TV series, he was able to capture my attention. Now I want to watch his movies...

I agree you should have your interview notes on a piece of paper or written down. Because that way the interviewee can see that you're looking at a list or notes that you've made for yourself. but if you put your notes on your phone your interviewee can't know that and he might just assume that you're not even looking at notes and that you're not paying attention.

One of the greatest filmmakers to ever walk the earth, right under his predecessors: Bergman, Fellini, Truffaut etc. Herzog is from another time, where filmmakers were not only entertainers but were thinkers, the Platos and Nietzcha's of the "modern times".

Werner's comments about walking coincide with an author whom I heard speak within the past few years (I wish I could remember the name of the author, as I was listening to a radio show). That is: one of the things that virtually all geniuses had in common was putting one foot in front of the other, walking, for long distances. Whether it was Aristotle, Mozart, Einstein, or any other number of intellectually amazing people, a great many of them walked. A lot.
