- Riot Games has been cooking. Over the last year we’ve gotten teasers for their upcoming 2D fighter “Project L”, but just last week we got the biggest content drop yet.
New gameplay details, and a ton of fighting game content creators got significant time with the game to share their thoughts.
Not only is this game shaping up to be damn good but it could potentially change the landscape of competitive fighting games… forever.

What everyone is forgetting is that the game isnt exclusively 1v1 or 2v2. It is built to be played fairly as a 1v1, 2v2, AND 1v2 game. You don't need singles and doubles brackets, they can be a unified bracket where solo players and hype duos can shine.
Yeahhh but like no because that isn’t really competitive because it just can’t be played fairly because 2 players have the fact that they both have their own habits and play styles for the 1 player to learn but the 2 players only have 1 player they have to get the download on while the 1 player has to get the download on 2 players to win.
@@nickoflegends1244 Actually, from all the content creators who have played the game, they said that the one player has the advantage over the duo currently. Just better cordination when you don't have to worry about a teammate. I am hoping that they do balance the game to make it fair for the duo though. That's going to be fun.
@@user-km7yr8wl6qi feel like that was only the case because they only had a few days to test the build. they did say that there are some things that only duos can do when it comes to assists
@@dubuious Yeah, I did also hear about some duo-specific stuff that is impossible on solo. The devs have said that they intend for both solo and duo to be equally viable, so I don't mind giving a bit of advantage to the duo.
Wait you an do 1v2?! If that's true then count me in
riot is becoming what blizzard used to be, i think the riot mmo will be just as popular today as wow was back then
*the words “used to be” are important here guys, don’t read this wrong.
yeah it means blizzard is boring now. Almost all lvl 100 and up players in diablo IV have nothing to do anymore and just done with the game. All that hype for just meh gameplay. Streamers played it for 2 days then went back to their regular broadcast content lmao.
so now riot needs to make an ARPG , an RTS and an MMO to become blizzard
@@cmja09 Diablo IV is fun at first but also gets boring quickly, none of my friends are playing it anymore. Game is overhyped.
@@fukmyself8178 ARPG is already in development is called Project F , MMO also in development so they only need to start an RTS
I play a shit ton of fighting games, go to my locals, hit up the majors in neighboring states, super hype for this but none of my friends were.. Until i told them we can play on the same team and now theyre genuinely interested. Kudos to Riot for that.
That final message at the end of this video of "which Esports do you show a non Esports watcher" was beautiful, and I agree, Fighting game Esports is a fantastic option.
But fighting game is hard to understand for none fan though. You only can see HP bar and that's it. CS would easy.
@@CallMNinja you only need to see 2 dude fighting each other, you dont need to understand the 100 jargon and fuckton of mechanic to enjoy the fight.
@@CallMNinja True but my niece and cousin dont play fighting games almost at all and yet anytime Tekken at EVO is on my screen they literally sit down and watch with me(which was a big surprise to me cuz they are really not into fighting games like I am, at all)
according to the IOC it's apparently tic-tac-bow.
EDIT: Also the esport any non-gamer can understand is rocket league. It's soccer with cars.
I'd say three right now:
CSGO and Rocket League are perfect.
Tekken specifically as the FGC coz it's flashier than the other ones.
Folks forget, this is four years + in the making just to get here with likely over a year to go to get to 1.0. Games at this level take time to make, so I just hope we appreciate the devs for taking the time here.
Riot has effectively unlimited funds/time for devs if they want, look at how long Hytale is taking/being given. Not surprised, but cool to see that it’s actually allowed by the higher ups unlike certain game developer companies (Gamefreak EA 2K etc)
@@AmalingHypixel is a under riot development?
There's going to be some sort of esport drama where a team of 2 has some sort of drama or betrayal and they split and then someone is going to swear off 'ever having a partner ever again' so he/she sticks to 1v1 until The One comes along and breaks them out of their solitude and later on someone's going to make a movie about it
Could just be like tennis tournaments, each one has a singles and doubles champion. Many players focus on one or the other but a lot of them play boths too
It's like Melee. Sfat and PewPewU were solid top 25 players but were undoubtedly the number 1 doubles team and it was beautiful.
i think this most likely in my opinion it makes the most sense instead of forcing viewers to watch just one or the other.
If it's online free service monetize on Skin, emote and other artistics. I think it'll be huge success. The game is short and casual enough that you could just drop in and relax without much thought.
I'm so excited for Project L. I'm Interested to see how it effects the scene. I really do hope they do stick to a more grass roots approach, if they do that I think it likely has a lot of staying power.
im so excited for the new project
I always say it and i say it again. Riot doesnt miss. So far they only put out quality games that have huge communities. Or smaller stuff that shines in their own right (LoR, Mageseeker etc)
yeah but i just hope that the mmo doesnt miss too. i think mmo is one of the hardest genre to hit right now
@@Noc25 for sure is. I dont think they will fk it up tho. they hired the right people to make it good and they give it the time it needs. i trust in it but as always we will see
except wildrift, the game is good. the problem is that they were too late to enter the mobile gaming scene lmao
@@fvjxznvueaepd8u You're not wrong, and also making this year's eSports scene Asia-exclusive fucked the hype worldwide.
Riot are like Apple, they look at a few feature or gameplay thing. They steal it and add their own characters into it and people just hype it enough. If you want a list of things they stole, you can literally start with league and TFT.
Official Riot tournaments will be 2v2, I have no doubt. It's such a huge differentiator to all the other fighting games out there and has huge potential for storylines, team drama, and hilarious moments which makes it so much more exciting for spectators.
They can do whatever they want with the official tourneys as long as it doesn’t get in the way of grassroots events like they did for league
People just don't want to play 1v1 these days. LOL It's all team-based or nothing for them.
Do you guys have Evo coverage plans this year?
Love The front bottoms thing in the background dude lol. I know a pop punker when I see one.
Id love a 2v2 fighting game esport to watch. I think it could be incredible with countless combos, pairs etc.
The tournaments that will come from this are definitely amazing. 2v2 with 4 people on stage that will be hype
Half the prize money per player, though.
Dude can you imagine the hype a 2v2 on the main stage at Evo would be 🤔🤩
cant wait to get railed in another riot game
Noe, I'm curious as to what they have in store for the other 2 projects they have
this has so mych potential for esport, asking players to communicate is a new thing for the FGC
Fighting games although have the most scope in theory never shatter the ceiling for some reason. I do not see this game matching sf6 viewership wise.
@@laxlightjpit could since this is pretty much the marvel of this era. Unless Capcom hits us with Marvel 4 out of nowhere
@@laxlightjpIt's a game made by Riot. It's going to have a wide player base of casuals and pros, much like Valorant and much like League of Legends.
2v2 would add more depth to the game then the traditional 1v1 imo.
I'd say the perfect eSport to show to a non gamer is actually rocket league. It's just easily understandable and aligns with traditional sports.
Agreed
Don't forget CS
I met Devin at Get on My Level last week. Dude was mad cool.
FGC scene is closer to a passion project, which makes it so enjoyable to follow.
I want some non-humanoid shaped characters.
that title was clickbait, but the content was surprisingly thoughtful, well done
They could do three separate tournaments, 1v1, 2v2 and mixed, my idea behind this is that, you give options to players and see where players performs better, not only that, you see the winner of 1v1 and the winners of 2v2 seeing who can win
You would be splitting the viewership way too much. And instead of having something like 300k viewers per stream, you'd be stuck at 100k or less. Make one single tournament and just let it thrive.
It was a bit of a late response from me, but I think there's no point in having a mixed bracket. People will just play whatever option is optimal, which will most likely be 1 player. You'll just end up having the bracket be 85% solo players. If that happens, it's just another solo bracket that defeats the purpose. Just do a 1v1 and a 2v2.
I wouldn’t say it’s going to change everything. It’s just taking from games already out there. It looks great and I’m excited.
They didn't "play 2v2 mode". As far as we know there is no 2v2 mode. You can just pick 1 or 2 players no matter what it seems.
1v1, 2v2, and 1v2 are all possible, so It seems likely at tournaments you will just be able to choose since there is no major advantage for either.
Yep, FGC is the one e-sport where the barrier between fan and competitor doesn't exist.
If you want to compete, YOU CAN JUST SIGN UP, and there's plenty of tournaments around the U.S. Whereas with a lot of the big esports, you have to move to LA/California, and even then you still need to get in somehow.
Also, yeah, like you don't need know a whole lot to enjoy watching competitive fighting games. You can go from fan to competitor at your own leisure, and the option is always open to you. That's the real draw of the FGC imo. It's depth as an e-sport is far and beyond most others, and that's because of its grassroots functions. You can go as deep into it as you want and the barrier to entry is paying the entrance fee.
theres plenty of tournaments worldwide, only problem really is getting word out that they exist in certain places
Almost every year at Evo, either Seth Killian or or James Chen refers to the audience as a "room full of losers." Most of the people in the audience on the final day have been eliminated and many of them went 0-2. But some of those people got a chance to play with the pros. Everyone has a chance to be that nobody online player that makes a name for themselves. There's really a sense of community that isn't present in other types of games.
I see Ekko so I click.
everytime riot game cooks, its reshapes the definition of michelin stars.
2 vids within an hour? im down
leffen is the first person you say have access to this game?
1v1 or 2v2 it will be franchised, and players will have to be in orgs that paid for a slot if they wanna compete
Game looks dope, is it available on PS?
If I'm not wrong, SF vs Tekken Capcom Cup was 2 players vs 2 players
Those fuse system need to be every well balanced, double assist and double tag seems much stronger than the others. Balancing a strong team in a certain fuse without hurting the other ones looks challenging. Hyper combos and the max mode/ roman cancel could be universal mechanics, I would like it.
Hope only cosmetics are paid and all characters and gameplay related stuff are free like CSGO and Dota2
Riot is full f2p
@@albertoaltahona88 Really 😃, I only have played a lil bit of LOL some years ago but at the time I didn't had access to all characters like Dota 2, witch I also played just a lil bit too. This game gonna be a blast💣
@@user-nr3ft3rr5u well all riot games have character lock, so u have to play for unlock but also there's so many champions that make same function. Pay to win not exist.
@@user-nr3ft3rr5u Character is locked behind some grinding, which isn't really that big of a deal because you'll get most of the champion you prefer to main by the time you're able to play rank. And maining just a few champion for ranking is pretty viable - even recommended - in League, because character counters are not that significant comparing to Dota2.
I'd even say the progression of character unlock itself can be enjoyable as new players, I can still recall my first new champion (Ezreal) unlocked back in S3.
Overall, the community really don't have a strong opinion about the grind wall, if you've heard anything bad about this it's probably from Dota2 community, they just love to hate LoL
@@maxiumlin6705 Hope they at least let players access all the characters "offline" kinda like Multiversus did. Not being able to lab against tricky setups would be rough.
Thx for the answer ❤, I played just a lil bit of LOL and Dota2 to check if I would enjoy mobas. I liked more having access to all characters right off the bat, interfaces, in game player guides and the individual skin customization "Tekken like" of Dota 2 but unfortunately it was not the case for actually playing the game in both cases. I remember that a flying white cat was just release when I was trying LOL, maybe I should try it again sometime in the future.
Can't wait to play Tryndamere and spam the same key the entire fight.
Regarding the 1v1, 1v2, 2v2 structure. All serious competitive play will be 1v1, especially since 2nd player controls burst, which is a very important defensive mechanic. Yeah you'll also have 2v2 tournaments which will be very fun to watch, but the most balanced will be 1v1, and also the most played. Any ranked system will probably be divided in two. I'm guessing every Riot game needs to have a carrying system so the ecosystem of players gets an influx of e-girls getting boosted 😂
Man i miss rising thunder for the super short time i played it
Vai estar disponível para consoles?
As someone only really interested in the LCS I 100% agree about fighting games being the entry point to eSports. I have ZERO real knowledge about fighting games beyond some characters I think are neat and I will occasionally drift over and watch a hyped match between two people I've never heard of and get psyched by what I'm seeing, lol.
definitely agree that fighting games should be the focus of esports. i don't play, but will readily watch almost anything FGC related. All the other online team strategy games hold zero interest for me. And frequently, there's a level of game specific knowledge that gatekeeps any enjoyment i might find in watching.
When is this coming out
I'm looking forward to Evo videos
Just give us a Pro Tour because I still I wanna go to events like EVO, CEO, East Coast Throwdown & Combo Breaker.
Future Ahri main incoming!
it aint going to change a damn thing
Valorant in its early closed beta stages was called 'Project A'
it would be good if it is team vs team e-sport where it goes 1vs1 then another 1vs1 and at last 2vs2
I highly doubt it'll overtake the likes of SF and Tekken, but it will help grow the FGC as a whole.
It probably will tbh
In terms of numbers? It may get close
In terms of real concrete difference? Probably not no, unless it's REALLY that good
I think the FGC really needs to stay independent with just support from whatever games are there. Grassroots is so much more entertaining that large orgs that don't care for the players or the game
you clearly don't know riot if you think they don't care about esports
can't wait for riot mmorpg, Racing, Battleroyal and fts games
I doubt u read the comments but the goal is to do both duos and solos together tournaments where solos fight duos and vice versa
Something in my gut is making me feel that this is the start of a possible separation of fighters aka more focus on their own game circuits rather than a collaborative effort of them existing together. But logically, on paper, while this does seem like just another addition to the FGC cog of content, the intention looks to be domination over the big 3.
Which it won´t, tag fighters and anime fighters are a niche within a niche in terms of fighting games. I don´t think street fighter diehards or tekken players will move over to this, not for a second.
@sofaking9404 At most they'll probably pick it up as a pocket game
@@sofaking9404 True, but I mean in terms of Riot trying to dip their hands into the market of a 4th profitable fighting game, although it primarily ending up on mainly PC most likely
2 v 2 should be 4 players at the screen at once
I hope they had Lux too so I can duo vs Ahri and Lux and plap them at the same time
My man
💀💀💀💀💀💀
darkinfolk energy
Bro how can lux even melee is she gonna slap them to death 😂😂😂
@@someonewhospams0w0inchat16 You forgot about Jinx?
Gundam versus does 2v2, but it never released outside of japan
Ok white armored Darius doused in cocain looked kinda funny
crazy that every riot game being made is somewhat changing the flow of the culture. Truely the video game company of all time.
I am not sure of all time but definitely with their ups and downs Riot has slowly changed the gaming landscape. First with League, then Valorant and now Project L.
Nintendo would like to say hi
@@pownder With the amount of RUclips strikes? Yeah, please stop lol
@@pownderThe culture indeed change
Nah, it'll be just another game with a lot of initial hype but once the honeymoon phase is over people will go back to their games. But, Project L will have it's own, big playerbase, and definitely a lot of casuals playing it.
I don't think it'll change much in the grand scheme, as a game. But Riot as a company might. Depending on how they'll handle it in relation to FGC and other esports.
Ahri looks beautiful in this!
whats goin on with your left eye?
Fiddlesticks and Sett waiting room...
I predict JHIN will be like Happy Chaos of Guilty Gear Strive
I hope they add a tourney mode like clash in league or premier in valo
"Core values of the FGC" lmaoo
Idk if that reference is intentional or not and if anyone caught that
Im excited about project L, but I hope that it wont make other fighting franchises dumb down mechanically while trying to capitalize on project L's popularity
Nice thumbnail
like what let me blame my teammates in a fighting game
Looks nice
Yes a fighting game, the most sweaty rage inducing genre of all, with two people...what could go wrong lol
I want to play this game
that final point is so real. LoL, CS, Siege, and other big esports are almost impossible to watch for an outsider, especially LoL. But fighting games and Rocket League tap into what everyone already knows about other sports. Fighting games are just MMA/Boxing- beat up the other person. Rocket League is just soccer with cars- ball go in hole.
1:32 Dragon Ball FighterZ has the feature
Isn't that just for vs the CPU? I know for a fact SFxT had that as a major mode. The first Evo it was at was actually ran that way.
Imagine how cool viego would be In a fighting game for the non league players viego whole thing is turning into other champions so he can use their moves
Mimic characters already been in fighting games
We see characters like this a lot already, and they do get to be pretty sick.
Project W
Project L has to be a monumental of a game just because it's going to fight amongst 2 very prominent title which is SF6 and Tekken 8 it better be one hell of a game if it's gonna be the big 3 of this years fighting game
no shot it's launching this year lmao. it's gonna have a beta a year from now most likely, and thats being generous.
No 2v2.
Brawlhalla : hey, why are we forgotten as an FGC esports?
Let’s not forget that MK9 did 2v2s
i got a feeling that the term "wombo combo" is going to be used a lot in the Pro Play Scene
It was born in the pro FGC scene??
@@ReceptiveRaptor i'm just saying that because not many fgc have 2v2. most of the highlights are 1v1 with multiple characters
What do you mean there no 2v2. Brawhala does 1v1 and 2v2
Project L looks really good, yet I'm sad to see it overshadow "Cerebrawl", (a fighting game centered around 2 players vs 2 players that has been in development for 7 years) as if no other game were doing this feature
.
tekken tag tournament 2?
If you're wondering. Roit isn't gonna make pro millionaire in fighting games from an old tweet. More aiming to make them into influences and brands.
Multiversus 2.0
Price?
Free?
the message in the end is true. Like try explaining dota2 to your parents
So when is the game gonna get... y'know... a name?
SOOOOOO FUCKIUNG HYPEEEEE
2v2 is like tekken tag tournament 2
Except Project L’s tagging system is kinda like how a split personality works in a person (at least on how you see it in movies); P1 will fight and other P2 will wait for a cue and when the cue comes the other one will operate and the former will sidelined in the middle of a fight.
I don't know why people are asking Riot how they want it to be played at tournaments. Maybe let the TO's decide what they want to see and how it goes.
they should call it project W
Is it free?
MK1 but its 2d?
I don't think they'll have to worry about income, cuz of one thing, skins.
If LoR isn't profiting.... how will the dev support in this project last?
I put a little money into cosmetics in LoR but not a whole lot. It's unfortunate but I don't think Card Games lend themselves well to the "F2P, funded mostly by cosmetics" model that LoL runs on, which is why competitors like Marvel Snap have very aggressive monetization. Fighting games do not suffer from that problem though. If Chun Li's 20+ alternate costumes in SFV are any indicator, they absolutely sell.
The fighting game scene is very different than the digital card game scene
Card game fans aren't well known for jumping between different games. Probably because of sunk cost into their cards. But the FGC has a history of hopping games. If Project L is good, the FGC will play it no question. The real question is whether it'll be able to attact a casual audience.
Through valorant, wild rift, and league
Which is sad really, the few card game that doesn't go into the whole meme of "you're better off with crack than TCG" and they're not doing well money wise.
Just makes you wonder what is up with the greater TCG community, I mean I have friends with the MtG community and tbh... I really just think they're in it for the money. Spending money, earning money. It's basically an economics sim to these guys...
Didn’t DBFZ have a mod were 6 players can play?
Man i wish it was platform fighter, holy fuck, we haven't had good platform fighter in YEARS
I mean Multiversus was gonna be good, just I have no idea what WB is smoking.
mmo when
