The best thing about Project L is seeing the FGC and League communities interact with each other in the most hostile way possible
The only difference being that the FGC has like 1 or 2 LTG's here and there, where as with League there's millions.
It's still a win for the FGC to get traction. However, retaining the traction when they bash the league community is probably not happening.

The thing I love about fighting games based on different series is being able to look though and see how they could possibly fight like with the stuff they have
I mean, you're not wrong but it definitely puts it into perspective to consider that in competitive, there's no mirror matches. Having multiple characters that occupy the same niche/role is really important. Imagine if you had to draft pick your characters in a 3v3 fighting game and someone could block you from picking your main.
If you want to do an extended cut, I'd recommend checking at the list of characters they ported over to the card game. League design gameplay wise puts characters in boxes A LOT since they have clear roles to fill. But the card game fleshes them out a lot more on thematic level.
There was an article back then about "Runeterran truths" from the Project L devs, saying how you don't want to translate the gameplay, you instead want to pin down the gameplay fantasy of a character and start from there.
Jax, the guy that fights with a lamp post, in the card game is depicted has having encountered and inspired people around the world to fight with whatever goofy ass weapon they have available. So there's a whole cycle of cards you pair in his deck where they randomly acquire equipments with different effects. The list of those weapons include :
- An electric powered wrench
- A cooking pot filled with spicy soup
- An amulet that summons a spectral wolf
- A fishing rod (with and without a fish attached to the tip)
- A back scratcher
- A shepherd's staff
- A cast iron pan
It's a great example of the design work the project L team also has to take when trying to translate these characters.
I was laughing when you skipped Bard, partly because he strikes me as a character you'd actually like but also because I totally get that sentiment when reading new character kits too.
Watching this as a league and fighting game player is mad funny. So outta pocket with so many characters but it’s vibes.

Exactly. That's the challenge for them but tbh there are ENOUGH archetypes and wild-ish designs to where they have a lot to work with
Shaco could have canned mixups like Hibiki, where he rushes you with a clone but you don't know if the high or the low or neither is real.

I'd say it's even worse. Camille is like a 7ft tall cyborg/robocop aristocrat with sword legs and Attack on Titan grappling hooks who puts you in magic-science prison - a pretty arguably unique and detailed character design regardless of what genre of games you're looking at - whereas Irelia nad her whole psychic Byakuya blades feels somewhat more like a generic anime fighter type character. Diana is pretty bland though I give him that.
I have been clean on league of legends for close to 3-4 years now, I am looking forward to playing Project L of course... but watching you roast some of these characters was as validating as it was hilarious. This why you the best Obama
Project L is great because it comes with an inbuilt response to someone offering to play it with "No thanks, you can hold that".
I've been playing League of Legends for 10+ years. Listening to an outsider's perspective about the characters and how its "Same person with different flavor" is totally valid and I can see where Majin Obama is coming from. League only gets new players through old heads, and I think if it weren't for that people would never pick it up. Obama, if you're really gonna play League then God speed to you and stay safe brother.
One thing I think was not mentioned was the reason there is like multiple of "the same character" is the like equivalent of like, "I don't play Ryu, I play Ken."
I understand a fighting game has to be more versatile, and unique with its cast, but aside from the fact that one wants to play Rek'Sai over Cho'Gath, it's because one has the Jungler role, the other has a top laner role. One is a tank, one is a bruiser. But I understand the need for roster balance.

@@doogies think of it like shotos- you got Ryu, Ken, Sean, Akuma , etc - someone not familiar with SF could look at them and make the same argument you are about league archetypes.
That being said, your analogy of starting with a template and then specializing in different talent tree set ups is basically how league archetypes work - assassins, juggernauts, ADCs, enchanters, mages, junglers- champs fit one of those archetypes but are differentiated in what aspect of that archetype they excel at.

Its cool to see someone who isn't deep into league reaffirm what a ton of League artists and critics say.
So many of their characters (especially the women) are the same body, one of five faces, and then random shit.
It's the saberface problem Takeuchi has but just with a western fanbase
Kayle would be Phoenix. The longer the game takes the more she comes online. She reaches her final form at level 16 (max meter) And she has an ultimate that prevents death so it’s kind of similar in that regard. Also, Solar Eclipse Kayle is the best looking Kayle which would also fit. Lol
I think A.B.A. when i think of Kayle for similar reasons. Starts out as trash but as she scales install she becomes oppresive.

Some things I think you are missing is looking into the actual lore of the character not just their LOL kit of abilities. Like a character heimer is known for a turret gun in LOL but the card game is actually building up robots to help him fight. So for me I think heimer not even having a turret gun but instead other inventions that act like traps a character like Old Testament from guilty gear or cagliostro from Granblue would use to control spots on the map.
Wonder if Riot could go for clone type characters (à la Smash) down the line to fill the roster. Do another 3D model, keep most of the animations, change up a couple of normals/specials and passive/status effect, boom new character to please the fans.

I think the reason purple is so common is because it's used to show evil or danger, the game has been using that color for anything related to the Void for so long and anything that comes from there is basically a threath to anything outside of it

These devs deadass make characters via injection mold. "ChatGPT output" ascribes too much intentionality and forethought to the primordial keyword soup that their 15th guy with sword or 45th waifu slithered out of.
The way this aesthetic absolutely took over the games industry should be studied at the CDC.

lol funny vid obama. league characters kind of have a different vibe because like u said there are alot of overarching archetypes like void characters being purple monsters or ionia characters all being ninjas, and the real importance of a characters identity is their playstyle and specific abilities. looking forward to project l and as always more content from you brother

i personally dont think most of the champions are similar in design like with diana, camille, and irelia, but i understand that there will be a difference of perspective due to how much of the IP we are exposed. i love hearing outsider perspectives so thanks for another great vid.

@@doogies For the splash arts, you're 100% right. In game, they play and look pretty differently (Diana and Irelia have a similar mechanic for the dashes, but they use it for different purposes). I fully agree that Riot struggles with "Same Face Syndrome" in splash arts a lot

Hey Obama, what's your take on games to prep for Project L? I've heard UMvC3, BBTAG, Skullgirls, Power Rangers, and MvCI. I've never played tag fighters before, and while they all seem like a blast, I'm struggling to decide which one to pick up.
How can you prep for a unique game? Just play a tag fighter but I hesitate to even say that. Just play a fg and work on getting higher level in it.
I dont know how effective it will be to grind power rangers, but it's prob not an awful idea to be familiar with it given the staff for this game...
