As a 50 year old man who has walked in Jacks shoes I can honestly say being an American father is not for the faint of heart. Looking back I regret missing the soccer games, evening dinners, and holiday events seeking the finer things. I would gladly hand over the keys to the BMW to watch one more soccer game my daughter played or kick the soccer ball with my her. Hmm sheet medal or a hug from your child. Fathers need to compete every day to protect their children and build a future. Modern society does not appreciate a father but other dads absolutely understand. God walked by my side while I ignored my family, but never left even when I cursed him for life's challenges. My only advice is when you spend moments away from your family make sure you will not regret this decision in the future. God bless you dads who fight for your family every day. Just do not cheat yourself or family out of the memories and incur future regrets. Money will never fill the hole in your heart. Your family and Jesus are there for you. Just love them and and enjoy the walk in the park, soccer game, ice cream, a baseball game, a Sunday sermon together.

Casting Crowns are genius. They were groundbreaking when they first came out. They have taken "preaching to the choir" to a whole new level. I love their lyrics! Another thing: They can write a worship song with complex lyrics and melodies, and still have catchy and easily singable! That's what more people need to be doing: writing songs that are both poetic and singable.

RIP drummer Andy Williams, this is one of the first Casting Crown Videos I’ve ever seen when I began following the group and it really did show his larger than life personality. Prayers for his friends and family.

Hey Kev, I been there brother. My dad was also a truck driver, my parents split up when I was 12. I lived my life trying to make him love me by being great, he loved me completly, but when he would come around, mom would give him grief. Just before he passed, we had "that"talk...more to follow....

I get chills every time I hear and/or sing this song, because somewhere deep inside I know I must admit that this song holds up a mirror to my face. As many times as I tell myself I'm gonna stop building my own kingdom and trust God a new and shinier temptation draws my eye.
This song always makes me cry; I can just imagine the people and families torn apart but these kinds of situations. I'm really happy the music video shows the man fixing his mistake. =)

This song brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it...hits too close to home for me, though I'm the mother, not the father, and for me it was graduate school, not the corporate world. Even though my situation did have an end in sight (graduation this weekend!) and wasn't about worshiping money, it still felt like this, having to miss ballgames and birthdays and pull all-nighters for research. Thank God that my family and I are believers, and together with God we got through it.

This suits my dad so well, which he too understands but sadly doesn't care about. When it comes to family or work he will always prioritize work no matter what. Because of this he's always coming home late (often arriving an hour+ after the time he said) or missing stuff, such as awards ceremonies at school. Not only that but whenever he has a bad day at work he'd always come home and take it out on us and our stuff using the excuse "my house, my rules". In fact it got so bad that a few years ago one day he actually kicked us out of the house. Now that we're living in another house he says he's sorry and that he wants to try to make amends for it, but I don't buy it since he's let me down too many times in the past. It's like "you've never wanted to interact with me like this before, so why start now?"
Let this be a lesson to all parents: wanting to provide for your family is fine and understandable, but it shouldn't come at a cost of everything else including your family, cause eventually they'll get so fed up with your behavior and just leave you behind for better pastures if that makes sense. Basically just don't make the same mistakes my dad did. That's all, you've been warned.

Now I've learned.

The American Dream needs to be revamped. It's been so glorified by Hollywood. This song helps illustrate it! Everyone needs to pull together and start valuing the important things in life!!

The fear of not doing enough to feed the family and support the myriad of loans causes people to dream the American/European/Asian Dream of prosperity after hard work.Work hard now reap the benefits later. Deferred gratification. For some God just has not provided a secure enough foundation for them to trust him. That is how reality and scripture clash.

I remember my middle school youth pastor used to play this music almost every Wednesday night for almost two years. I haven't heard in awhile. Never noticed the Shining reference when I was a kid.
When I first saw the title of this song years ago I really didn't think I'd like it. Partly cos I'm British lol and thought I wouldn't relate. But I absolutely love it its a great message for parents anywhere in the world that are trying to keep all the plates in the air at once. Being a single mum I can relate. Not so much about chasing money and 'stuff' but trying to find balance in a hectic busy world

This really hits home I’m 31 years old and don’t really have the American dream no job right now but it hurts to see this I feel like I’m that kid now I have a very nice Christian family but when I was younger my dad was really never around to teach me school smarts and what not and I never like to blame him but I really do i feel that him not being there has hurt me in my life so far I guess that sounds selfish but I just wish things we’re little better in my life right now I’m very far from perfect at all I still have my faith but it just Seems like it’s harder and harder to hold on to that And unfortunately my father is better but he still that guy trying to build that Castle
To Ray Porter. The importance of a single flower should never be forgotten. In other words, try to take the time with him to show him the importance of the little things. A little Daisy, a little pebble in the sand, a drop of dew on a leaf, etc. The biggest problem with the American Dream is that those that chase it don't "stop to smell the flowers." They're focused so heavily on their goal they don't even realize what they're tossing away to get there, and that's what you need to help him understand. Bigger houses, faster cars, and whatever else, however nice they may be, aren't NEEDS, they're WANTS. "Weird" Al does a pretty good job of showing just how silly we and our riches are in his song First World Problems. Materialism is the focus of material possessions over all else, and, speaking from experience, it's quite hard to escape. So pray for him, and don't give up hope. It took me several years just to get enough faith to stop being scared of my own shadow. God does these things on His time, not ours. So don't get discouraged. No matter the weight of the matter, just keep praying. The very hairs on our head are all numbered, and He knows how many there are on each and every one of us. So how could we overburden Him with our petty little troubles? Also, "The biggest test of our faith comes when we don't get the answer we want but are still able to say 'Thank you, Lord.'"

A true Godly husband is called to lay down their life for their family. Not only is he called to work to provide for the family, but he is also called to labor when it comes to spending time with family. You can do both and must do both. There is no excuse, men should not be so weak as to clock out after their work ends.

As a husband and father of (soon to be) 2 children i can't explain how hard this song hits me. I feel like I am always working to try and give my family a happy life but I've already sacrificed so much time and missing seeing my son grow up and it is a totally different type of pain to feel
