In this video, I share my thoughts on the Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80, a watch I called one of the best everyday watches for the price back in 2020. Much has changed in the attainable watch world, but I'm prepared to argue the Gentleman still presents a very strong argument, especially in the case of this striking new "glacier" ice blue dial. What do you guys think of the Gentleman in 2023?

It would actually wear better if the bracelet had female endlinks. For all of the hype, the PRX is a dismal fail for me, as the endlinks don't articulate at all. The 40 wears way too large, because of this design fault, whilst the dial on the 35 is tiny. Some very simple adjustments to the bracelets would sell a bunch more of these for Tissot.

I have 14 watches in my watch collection and, by far, my favorite is my Tissot Gentleman with the Navy Blue dial. I have several watches in my collection that are double the price of the Gentleman, but the Tissot, in terms of looks, just comes out ahead. It is about as close as someone like me, with modest means, will come to getting a Grand Seiko level of luster on a watch. I have Teddy to thank for introducing me to the Gentlemen. I have been enamored with the watch, and Teddy's channel, ever since.

This 40mm size is great for my 7.25” wrist. And I for one really like the bracelet-just don’t understand the negativity about it. Bracelet is comfortable, I like the look of the polished center links, and it’s sturdy. To me, the bracelet compares favorably with my Mido or Christopher Ward bracelets. I tried straps on my Gentleman, but didn’t like the look as much-especially since that area between the lugs (hidden with bracelet; visible with strap) has an matte, bead-blasted type finish that stands out from every other surface and not in a good way-almost like it’s unfinished.

My grandparents got me this watch back in 2020 as a graduation present for my medical degree. It was the watch I wore everyday to work. Wore it in the ICU, ER and OR ships ( off course not during procedures, etc). That watch has been through a lot, taking patients to the MRI machine, I cleaned it with pure alcohol, wash it with soap when I got back home…. It felt to the grown, went to the gym with it. It’s a great watch! Shame the bracelet, specially because of those endlinks… but a great watch that has a very special place in my heart. I must say, this new ice blue version does look great. Would like to see a slightly smaller version, perhaps a 38 mm version with a better bracelet 👍🏽

I got a Gentleman 2 years ago as a graduation gift for myself. I have a 6.5 inches wrist and it’s definitely on the larger side for me. The lug to lug distance is on the limit of what I can wear, but it is so versatile; I have used it on leather straps for weddings and special occasions, on the bracelet for the office and in sailcloth, canvas and rubber straps for the weekend, it may not be the perfect watch for all those scenarios, but it definitely doesn’t look out of place. Still I would like to see a 37 or 38 mm version

I purchased the green dial variant last year, prepared to hate the bracelet. I purchased a really nice green leather strap off the Etsy website. I have 6 3/4 inch wrists, but found the bracelet better than expected. However, the leather strap was perfect, and I have been wearing it ever since I swapped it out. The bracelet would be way better if the center links were brushed and it had female endlinks.

My wrist is even smaller at 6.05 and while this watch may lean in the larger direction I think a 39mm would be just perfect. I already have a 38 mm Casio which looks small on my wrist in my opinion, and 40 or more starts to look big.

I own a Gentleman in green. It's a great watch that gets many compliments. However, having waited for some time for a "new" Gentleman (and being somewhat bombarded with versions of the PRX) I'm not wooed by just a dial color variant. Especially when *light blue*, "ice blue" and (dare I say) "Tiffany blue" have been done. I feel Tissot should have given us something more. Perhaps a GMT or a small seconds. That said... I'm sure I'll get one because it's a beautiful watch and a great value.

Tissot knocked it out of the park with that latest release. I really can't wait to see the Gentleman in 36mm. That would be another home run for Tissot.

@@jattytakeover7099 I haven't heard anything but great comments from actual watchmakers. I do own the PRX Powermatic 80, and I'm good friends with my Tissot AD here in town. Yes, it's not a movement that you can adjust at home (like an NH35, for example), but it most certainly can be serviced/repaired by a watchmaker. Now, if, for some reason, your AD can't fix the issue, there are no parts or labor costs if you send it to Tissot. You'll have your movement replaced by paying a flat fee that's actually less expensive than servicing any automatic movement.

@@jattytakeover7099 Oh, and the "plastic" is a "high precision polymer". It falls under that category because it doesn't have the properties of metal. Silicium is anti-magnetic, resists corrosion and does not require lubrication, but is as resistant as metal.

I love the Gentleman but I do not care for the ice blue personally. I prefer the darker blue that I have. I love my Tissots and oddly think the PRX is unnecessarily bulky and looks too chunky. I don't care for it. I have a Gentleman Automatic, Tradition Open Heart Automatic, and the Telemetre 1938 Automatic. Love all three! The gentleman is so underrated lately. I commented on this in your last video when you didn't list it in you watch list. This watch deserved this video. Very nice!

I agree with many here that a Gentleman in the 36mm-38mm would be great. I also think a GMT at the 38mm-40mm range would be awesome too. I think the Gentleman is far more versatile than the PRX.

I bought this about a week ago as my first real watch and I love it. I was looking at the green dial but they pulled out the ice blue and it was perfect. I thought I might have buyers remorse the next day over either the watch itself or the dial color but I'm happier with it than now than when I bought it.
    Great starter watch.

I have one since 2 years. I hate the bracelet as it does not feature quick release on the old bracelet. To this day I only wear this watch on a canvas strap, it's the most comfortable and good looking watch. Is there any other watch out there that comes close to this ? Would love to expand my collection but this is hard to beat

I have the gentleman 80 Silicum wirh dark blue cross hair dial. It's a real classy dial, but yeah, it's a bit too big. Tissot should make a 38mm variation. That'd be perfect!!

  • @wdiffee

The gap between the chapter ring and the minute track makes the dial look shrunk in my opinion. If they use lume-filled markers instead of the pips, use a longer handset, and extend the minute track out to the chapter ring, it would make for a much more visually appealing dial while making it more functional.

I simply can’t wear mine on the bracelet. The end links make it far too big, plus the lack of micro adjust and the weight make it so uncomfortable. I bought a padded brown strap, and love it.

A little late but with a 6.25 inch wrist I would also really appreciate a 36-38 mm gentleman. If not I’ll just save a little longer and get the CW c63 in 36 but personally I’d own both for the right size.

I really like the specs, price, dial and markers, but there are three reasons I didn't buy it : not available in a smaller 36-37 size, the bezel is a little too wide, polished center links. This is why I prefer the Citizen NB-1050.

Nice watch indeed, I initially planned to get one but it’s too large for my wrist so I went for PRX 35mm instead (still large for me but at least it didn’t “look” that large on my wrist). But I still love the design of Gentlemen, hoping that they done a smaller version someday.

I like the 40mm size, anyway I´m sure if they make 38mm will be a best-seller watch. The most controversial part is the bracelet (the polish centre-links, no micro-adjustment..), I don´t like it. And for Christmas wishes, make it also 150m WR and will be the best value/price GADA out there (my favourite watch is the Aqua Terra)

Totally agree. They can make a 36mm and still offer the 40mm for bigger wrists. Polished center links always look cheap, so brush that, add a clasp with micro adjust and you've got a timeless piece there.
