An ambulance after insurance is usually anywhere from $500-2200, depending on if the ambulance has to take any steps to keep you stable on the ride to the hospital. ER visits easily cost $1,000+ even for things they deem minor. I was once charged $75 for a single standard over the counter ibuprofen pill while waiting to be seen when I complained of pain. It's ridiculous.
It doesn't matter how much money you make. If you get sick in America you're screwed. Insurence companies are part of the problem since it spikes the price of everything.

I remember Krusty Towers. The whole joke was that Mr. Krabs had ridiculous ideas to turn the Krusty Krab into a hotel, and then had later plans to turn it into a hospital after learning the hard way how much each of those cost.
In a nationalized system, the government sets fixed budgets amd prices. However these policies have limited adoption in America. Many don't seem comfortable with the idea of spending less. Most people just want the government to pay for healthcare, instead of finding out why everything costs as much as it does.
Here in New Zealand every citizen is entitled to comprehensive healthcare. If you visit the doctor you only have to pay the consultation fee. Hospitals and surgeries are essentially free and if you need medication, almost everything is subsidized so heavily that you only have to pay a couple of dollars to fill a prescription. It really makes you feel like your taxes are being put to good use.
But for some absurd reason the people who oppose universal healthcare think its stealing from doctors and making them slaves. The just don't want to admit that the facts are against them and that government funded healthcare is better than privatized healthcare.
Kaionfire clearly you don't understand that New Zealand doesn't have 40 million subsaharan Africans and another 50 million mestizos. who on average without universal healthcare are a financial net loss on the country. they literally take more than they pay into the system. universal healthcare in the U.S. = forcing white people to pay non whites to get medical care. its racist af.
In some hospitals, kids with colds will usually generate a bill to their parents and on that bill there will be something called a "mucus recovery device" that costs $24. I’ve had panic attacks thinking about how much my parents have paid for my health. Went to an inpatient facility for self-harm, this is the timeline: - referred to the hospital/ER when I told a pediatrician (2 services) - was taken to the facility in an ambulance (3 now) - and spent about a week or so there (only got to leave “quickly” because my grandpa passed away, to which I had to beg the psychologist(s) to sign for release so I could attend his funeral), only saw the psychiatrist for about 5 minutes a day and had group “therapy” that was the quality of a school guidance counselor for an hour every other day. Oh! And everyday at this facility costed $1,000. At the end of the day, got prescribed some new meds, and left with far more emotional trauma than I entered with. Thinking of spending another day there makes me want to dry heave my intestines out.
I want to tell you that you’re not alone in the mental health struggle. I can’t imagine how much my dad has paid for my hospitalizations of 2 weeks each (I lost count after the 11th hospitalization) which only put me on the most expensive medications (antipsychotics) possible and was misdiagnosed as bipolar being on 8 medications at one point trying over 34 medications, ECT (I can’t imagine how much that costs), ketamine therapy, TMS, intensive outpatient programs, partial hospitalization programs. I’m down to taking two medications which were the same ones before my breakdown with some memory issues from ECT. I wasn’t diagnosed properly until 2 years ago.

My times here in the US, the longest Ive waited for something like that was 30 minutes. As a British person this is just shocking, confusing and absolutely ridiculously evil. I couldn't even imagine having to think about all of this before I sought healthcare
As an American our healthcare system is just fine. We actually have a very big safety net and many jobs come with health insurance anyway. Plus most hospitals take whatever money insurance doesn’t cover and uses it as a tax write off. It’s really a lot better than people think.
Healthcare in America is... I can spend $25,000 on healthcare in my lifetime, but my money will also be used to pay for the healthcare of other people, or I can spend $125,000 on healthcare in my life, but it won't be used for anyone else. Americans would prefer to pay an extra $100,000 in their lifetime for the warm feeling they get inside from not helping anyone else. Not caring for other people and being made idiots out of by their government and corporations is American culture, so we shouldn't knock it.
I understand why socialized medicine is appealing to a lot of people. But why should government subsidize healthcare for everyone when most people are able to pay for their own healthcare? Wouldn't it be better to just assist those who aren't able to do so? There is no need to give the government ultimate control over healthcare just because a substantial minority of people can't pay their medical bills.
Most of socialised healthcare is paid for by non-exploitative health insurance in hospitals that don't charge $5 for a tissue. The amount that comes from the government is a fraction of what the US government subsidises private companies with. Of course the same argument applies, why have a socialised Fire Service?

The Canadian health care system is perfectly fine. Back in April I rolled by ankle badly after slipping on ice and went for an X-ray (just to make sure I did not break it) the next morning. No line up and I was in and out in about 1hr cost me $0.
The US health system can be summed up quite easily: Doctor to Patient: "Good Morning" (two hundred dollars) ... "Please sit down" (four hundred dollars) ... "How can I help you today?" (six hundred dollars). Bashing the NHS has become a national sport in the UK; it would help if people acquainted themselves with the alternatives before looking a gift horse in the mouth.
sadly, a lot of the videos on this channel do push agendas or color the facts they present in favor of X social justice or Y political issue. Even more disappointing, is how they have pushed the video about the Stanford Prison Experiment recently. a week before that video was put out several people that were actually involved in the 'experiment' came out and told everyone that it was all fake and several of the participants were paid actors. One of the 'guard' actors said he put the whole thing on because that's what he thought they wanted. He had never even been to the south but he decided to give his 'character' a southern accent. Yet they failed to mention this in the video. Then, a week after that they advertised it, again and again, failed to mention that the entire thing had been put into question. Every country in "the West" except US has a universal healthcare system that has not been reneged as it works and is better than private care only. I guess my country Sweden health care system is like using Spotify. You pay a small amount every month and can listen to all songs without paying when playing them. For every song, you pay just like you pay for medicine, insurance, treatment, ambulance every time you need help. Instead of paying a little bit (much less than insurance) every month with your tax and get access to every thing.

Here in the U.S we have these CareNow clinics, basically a serialized chain of walk in clinics, and the most realistic bill for health care I have ever had was walking into one for a kidney infection; $387 for the visit and testing, which almost makes sense since they had to do a urine test, and then another $80 for a ten day course of antibiotics. Another time I had to get checked out for a sprained ankle, that cost me around $230 for a doctor to come in, feel my ankle, and tell me I just needed to stay off it for a couple days.

Even with health insurance you have make sure everything is in network for it to be covered. Friend got stuck with a $45k medical bill because the room he was operated in wasn't in network. You would assume if the hospital and doctor are in network it's fine. But no. The room also has to be in network.
Yeah the NHS isn't perfect and it has gotten a lot worse recently. The issue is that a lot of people think the NHS will solve all their problems. There needs to be more investment in social care and there needs to be a massive cultural shift in the UK, so we have a fairer, healthier society. But, at least the NHS is free at the point of use, meaning that if you don't have a job or you are a citzen of another country in the UK and you don't contribute to the NHS through National Insurance, then pretty much any treatment is free. Hopefully it will stay that way
I was once treated with stitches on my hand abroad - withun the EU. Not only the entire visot was 45 minutes on a weekend, but the treatment was 125€. It included a very short visit by a surgeon who checked if all "connections" in my hand were ok, and just said "okay" (literally), then a technician came and put the stitches. No stress, no rush, I even chatted with the technician.
This is pretty stunning to hear. In my country if you break your leg you get fixed up with little or no cost at all! Instead everyone who's got a job pay about 1 quarter of their earnings in tax and a lot of that money goes to public healthcare!
shoot, free healthcare and the taxes are way less!! where are you? its time for me to leave NY... I have 35% of my pay taken for taxes (FED and State) plus roughly another 10% to all of the other little fees and collections they can think of.. I know every week im only bringing home half of what i actually make. I make a pretty good wage and I still have to live pay sheck to pay check... USA is soooo far from the greatest country.
American here that has been in and out of the hospital multiple times. Here’s my tips: Ask for an itemized list- the cost will go down because they often remove contestable costs If you brings pills from home, do not give them to the nurse. If you do, you will be charged for the nurses assisting/administering medication for each pill even if it’s them just handing the pill to you in a plastic cup. Do not take offered (and optional) braces/ice packs. Ask for the exact title of the thing they are wanting you to take, and then go buy your own at a drug store. It’s likely to be at least $50 cheaper since it’s not “administered”. Talk to your insurance (nicely) before paying ANYTHING. They can and will sort many costs out and figured out what you ACTUALLY owe. This will decrease the bill, sometimes by a lot due to bureaucracy errors. Be aware of how many gowns/pants, bedding, and other fabric items that need to be replaced you are using. Obviously don’t wear the same gown for too long, but be aware there are charges for each set. Bring your own food and drinks, if it’s allowed. Hospital food tastes nasty and is expensive. (Although the kitchen staff is usually super nice). If you know a procedure (or birth) is coming up in advance, see if you are pay for it before hand. This often will drive down the cost a lot. Ask about the expected costs upfront, and ask if there’s an extra charge for EVERYTHING! An assisted walk down the hallway or trip to the bathroom can cost extra if a nurse is involved instead of a family member (obviously gauge this in accordance with your needs, if you need a nurse you need a nurse). Did you know skin-to-skin between mother and child before the cord is cut and the baby is cleaned costs extra money? It’s dumb af. You may be charged more if you have a pre-existing condition/neurological issue/difference. Contest this ASAP. Especially if it’s a situation where the patient has autism/ is neurodiverent and they added in some unnecessary cost. It could be a case of possible discrimination. Always contest your bill. It’s easy to lower it that way and not a lot of ppl know that you can! And VOTE for candidates that will push for Medicaid for All/Universal Healthcare.
Small bit of feedback, at 7:56 you have accidentally swapped the "Tissues" and "IV Bag" images with each other - was slightly confusing. I suspect it's an easy thing to fix, though!
Although the damn torries are determined to destroy it, sadly. Australia's having the same problem with the LNP trying to undermine our own medical service.
The NHS is a godsend, but unfortunately it is struggling because the US-like health insurance companies are gaining ground, (and surprise-surprise, the Tories in charge are connected to or own shares in these companies) and they're being allowed to purchase various services. The end result is an underfunded NHS, where the government can pass the blame to freelance partners that are unwilling to be that involved so that the NHS gets less funding because they aren't being that effective because the Government is passing the blame to freelance partners who are unwilling to be that involved so that the NHS gets less funding because similar clinics are now funded by a private company so the NHS now has to send patients to them, but the company in charge is paid the bare minumum because it's still government funded so they do as little as they can possibly do so the patient ends back at the NHS because they've been short-changed except at this point a government minister's husband has been paid by the NHS to see a patient and refer them back to the NHS.

I’ve had panic attacks thinking about how much my parents have paid for my health.
Went to an inpatient facility for self-harm, this is the timeline:
- referred to the hospital/ER when I told a pediatrician (2 services)
- was taken to the facility in an ambulance (3 now)
- and spent about a week or so there (only got to leave “quickly” because my grandpa passed away, to which I had to beg the psychologist(s) to sign for release so I could attend his funeral), only saw the psychiatrist for about 5 minutes a day and had group “therapy” that was the quality of a school guidance counselor for an hour every other day. Oh! And everyday at this facility costed $1,000.
At the end of the day, got prescribed some new meds, and left with far more emotional trauma than I entered with. Thinking of spending another day there makes me want to dry heave my intestines out.
That is terrible. Where I live seeing a psychologist costs about $15 an hour. I hope everything turns out well for you.
I’m sorry you HURT yourself knowing how expensive it is? Of course if you hurt yourself it’s gana cost money . Jesus Christ
I stayed overnight in the hospital last year for a kidney infection. Pretty standard, took some blood, pee, gave fluids did an X-ray and of course gave some pain meds..... $34,000!!!!!!

Of course the same argument applies, why have a socialised Fire Service?

sadly, a lot of the videos on this channel do push agendas or color the facts they present in favor of X social justice or Y political issue.
This video on health care is the second within i think a month that seems to suggest socialized health care is better. Go find the video about the happiest countries. Over and over they mention nationalized/ socialized healthcare as a requirement to be on the list and how that's why the US is never on the list. Despite the severe drawbacks of such a system.
(Note: I'm not saying our system is perfect but to /not/ mention that there are heavy drawbacks to socialized health care and failing to discuss those issues is just disingenuous. I wish they would be more objective considering they present these videos as fact and the whole feel fo the channel is supposed to instill a sense of an animated documentary.)

American here that has been in and out of the hospital multiple times. Here’s my tips:
Ask for an itemized list- the cost will go down because they often remove contestable costs
If you brings pills from home, do not give them to the nurse.
Yea. Become a lawyer/detective or go even more bankrupt.
Yankees plz Vote forward Universal Health Care.
Small bit of feedback, at 7:56 you have accidentally swapped the "Tissues" and "IV Bag" images with each other - was slightly confusing. I suspect it's an easy thing to fix, though!
Its funny how americans make fun of the NHS but the fact is it works and people are alive

You guys are lucky to have an NHS
Well this American doesn't make fun of the NHS.

In other countries doctors see a patient, in US doctors see a customer.
If you are middle class or above (or retired), the U.S. is the best place for health care -- high quality, minimal waiting. If you're poor, it's not a good place for health care.
I'm chocked. The details of the system are insane. This is bananas! I lived as a foreigner in France for way more than a decade. First as a college student then as a pro.
Coming from a country that does not have such an advanced healthcare system such as France has, it took me a fair amount of time to understand its details. What was very obvious however was how afforable it is and effective with great heathcare provided even in public hospitals (which is hellish in country where I'm from).
However, I was clueless all this time. Compared to US system, French system costs ziltch! It's crazy... And they want to get rid of the Obamacare???!!
Could someone explain? I'm seriously reconsidering my plans to work for some time in the US.

When each of our daughters was born, my wife and I were charged $5K before insurance covered anything. Luckily, after filing paperwork about our financial situation, a Catholic organization affiliated with the hospital paid it for us. It was a blessing to see fellow Christians help bail us out, but sad that they had to do so in the first place. As such, I have mixed feelings on the situation. Love my kids, though! They're worth every copper penny (most days, haha).
