  • Amazing Hikes in Sedona - Hangover Trail & the Windows
    Yeah. Sedona is beautiful. And crowded. But there are ways to beat the crowds and see the beauty. Secret #1 is easy; get up early. Beat the crowds while they're sleeping. Secret #2 is harder; figure out places everyone else isn't going to. The Hangover Trail is a great alternative to the norm when you go to Sedona. Not really that hard, not really that easy, but the Hangover Trail provides a huge pay off for not too much effort. Well, if you have a 4WD. I guess that's Secret #3; have a vehicle that gets you where other vehicles can't get to.
    And Secret #4; explore. We hiked this trail before. We saw the arch. We saw the windows. But we had an agenda and we were tired, so we didn't explore. That's great, because it gave us an excuse to go back and hike the Hangover Trail again. And it was worth it. The Proboscis Arch was amazing. You can climb right up to it. Well, if you have the confidence and experience you can. And then you keep going. The mountain rewards you with several caves called The Windows.
    I have to say this. I get some hate for showing these places. I do not intend to ruin the wild places that we all love. But they are not mine. They do not belong to those who are in a secret circle of people. They are there for anyone to explore. I won't draw you a map with an X, but I don't mind sharing with like minded people. That said, if you DO decide to go explore, I hope you honor that these places are there for all of us to share and discover. That means leave no trace. Don't deface these wild places by carving your name into the rock. Carry out what you bring in. Sometimes, carry out what others brought in. Do your part. Leave things as you found them for others who are like you to experience.

    Have wanted to hike this trail since seeing your first video of it. We get to AZ from TX a few times a year, so Hangover was a priority when I was there last week. I hiked it early last Tuesday morning counter clockwise, and only saw 8 people the whole time. Weather was perfect-sunny and 60 degrees with no wind. Man, one of the most scenic hikes I’ve ever done. Thank you so much for the incentive your videos provide to get outside and enjoy life!

    I’ve ridden in other people’s cars up schnebly but I won’t do that to my Subaru. It could probably take the wear, but it’s just not worth it to me. So, I end up hiking from the parking lot up munds wagon trail, to schnebly hill trail, which leads up onto Munds mountain, which is a totally unique mountain for Sedona. Wavy, hilly meadows, sometimes elk herds, amazing views. The whole hike is about 20 miles, so those last few hours are pretty rough, but it’s always one of my favorite long hikes. And you never see anyone once you get above schnebly road... until you come back down and have to listen to all the Jeep’s and ATVs on the road.
    Thanks for the video

    Over 20 years ago I rode out there on a bike and decided it was suicidal. Another time we also dropped down into Oak Creek Canyon from the saddle and came out at the bridge. Very technical riding. But maybe the trails are better now. I live in Cottonwood, so it is close by, but the crowds in Sedona suck so I don't go over there much anymore.

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  2 года назад

      The hike is a loop. You can go from the Cow Pies Trailhead, but you need to get up Schnebly road to get there (4WD only). You can park at the Huckaby Trailhead before the road turns to 4WD and hike the trail along the road (Bear Wallow?) and access it from there also. It adds 1 or 2 miles to the overall hike that way, but no 4WD needed.

    • @JerryArizona

      Best Mexican we've found is El Patio on the Cornville exit on the way up....It's a dive, but that's perfect. Javelina Cantina was good. Not great, but good. I mean, I don't think they'd be disappointed. My buddy would kill me for not saying Elote Cafe, but it's always closed when we are there so I haven't tried it. Good reviews. Do not recommend Oaxaca or the place in Tlaquepaque. I'd love to try that really fancy place from the chef at Dahl & Diluca (sp?) - Mariposa...but I never think far enough ahead to make reservations.

    Hi! Planning a trip to Sedona mid February. Do you think it’ll still be snowing? Didn’t want to hike in snow.

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  3 года назад +1

      Absolutely no idea. It's really unpredictable there in the winter. It's actually really fun hiking in the snow. Microspikes help. We've hiked up there a few times in the snow and loved it. Then again, some canyoneers just got caught in a snowstorm and spent two nights on the mountain over this past weekend....probably less fun.
      I recommend just watching the forecast when it gets closer. You'll probably be OK, but you never know.

    Is this trail really marked very well? We will be in AZ in November. Is this easy to find without using 4WD?

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  9 месяцев назад

      The white dots mark most of the trail where it's on the red rock. You just have to keep your eye out for them. It isn't marked climbing up to the Windows. If you don't have a 4WD, you can park where Schnebly goes from asphalt to pavement (just off the round-a-bout coming into town from the south) and follow the trail along Schnebly Road up Bear Wallow Canyon. I'm not sure the name of this trail, unfortunately, but if you look at a map or GPS device, you should see it. It'll add 1 or 2 miles each way, but still shouldn't be too bad overall.
